• What Visual C++ references are worth a look for a Java programmer looking to get up to speed?

  I have a lot of experience with Java/OO. There are tons of C++ tutorials/references out there, but I was wondering if there are a few key ones that a Java programmer might find useful when making the transition. I will be moving from server-side J2EE to Windows Visual C++ desktop programming. I have googled and found tons of resources, but am overwhelmed and don't know where to best spend my time. I have only a few days to get a good start. Is Visual Studio Express / Microsoft Visual C++ the best IDE for me to start with? Also, any words of wisdom from others who know and work with both languages?

I see that I can add layers to the Map control, but is there a way to add a Raster image to a map control? • installing NUMPY for Mac OSX 10.7. (Lion) for use with Python

  I Need to use nltk and numpy with Python. I am a newbie to Python and initially used the python 2.7.3 that came with my mac (currently running OSX 10.7.5). I learned that the apple version of python may not be robust so I downloaded the standard version from python.org. I have downloaded the nltk program for Mac OSX 10.7. This seemed to install fine. I am trying to download and install numpy using the instructions from the scipy website. http://www.scipy.org/Installing_SciPy/Mac_OS_X. I cloned numpy from github but when I tried to build it using the following command $ python setup.py build I received the following error MacOS/Python: can't open file 'setup.py': [Errno 2] No such file or directory I also tried to build it using the scons command $ python setupscons.py scons --jobs=2 and received the following error /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/Resources/Python.app/Contents/MacOS/Python: can't open file 'setupscons.py': [Errno 2] No such file or directory Can anyone think of a possible workaround?

• How would I implement separate databases for reading and writing operations?

  I am interested in implementing an architecture that has two databases one for read operations and the other for writes. I have never implemented something like this and have always built single database, highly normalised systems so I am not quite sure where to begin. I have a few parts to this question. 1. What would be a good resource to find out more about this achitecture? 2. Is it just a question of replicating between two identical schemas, or would your schemas differ depending on the operations, would normalisation vary too? 3. How do you insure that data written to one database is immediately available for reading from the second? Any further help, tips, resources would be appreciated. Thanks.

  I am already using output caching in my ASP.NET MVC application. Page speed tells me to specify HTTP cache expiration for css and images in the response header. I know that the Response object contains some properties that control cache expiration. I know that these properties can be used to control HTTP caching for response that I am serving from my code: Response.Expires Response.ExpiresAbsolute Response.CacheControl or alternatively Response.AddHeader("Expires", "Thu, 01 Dec 1994 16:00:00 GMT"); The question is how do I set the Expires header for resources that are served automatically, e.g. images, css and such?

  My understanding is that VMMs such as VMware's ESXi Server maintain shadow page tables to map virtual page addresses of guest operating systems directly to machine (hardware) addresses. I've been told that shadow page tables are then used directly by the processor's paging hardware to allow memory access in the VM to execute without translation overhead. I would like to understand a bit more about how the shadow page table mechanism works in a VMM. Is my high level understanding above correct? What kind of data structures are used in the implementation of shadow page tables? What is the flow of control from the guest operating system all the way to the hardware? How are memory access translations made for a guest operating system before its shadow page table is populated? How is page sharing supported? Short of straight up reading the source code of an open source VMM, what resources can I look into to learn more about hardware virtualization?

The project is worked on MFC When I build the project what I working in debug mode, It builds done successfully. but in release mode, Output window shows next 1Compiling resources... 1Linking... 1Generating code and then.. it doesn't pass. It seems like be stoped. After 20 min ,I just canceld build. It has been built well before. I just added some files(.h .cpp) and resorces(.bmp), not special code and it happened.   Building a ASP.NET MVC site and I would like to add some values to my .resx file at run time. I have tried: IResourceWriter writer = new ResourceWriter("myResources.resources"); writer.AddResource("String 3", "Third String"); writer.Close(); This code compiles and executes fine but after I close the website and look at the .resx file it is corrupt and I must re-create the .resx file again. I'm loading the image like this: if (child.Name == "photo" && child.Attributes["href"] != null && File.Exists(child.Attributes["href"].Value)) { Image image = new Image(); image.Source = new BitmapImage(new Uri(child.Attributes["href"].Value, UriKind.RelativeOrAbsolute)); images.Add(image); } Where the "child" object is an XmlNode which could looks like this <photo name="info" href="Resources\Content\test.png"/> During debug it seemd images is filled with actual images but when I want to see them in any way it shows nothing. Weird thing is when I include the images in my project it does work, I however dont want to do that since my point for using an xml file is so that it would be lost since you'd have to rebuild the program anyway after a change.

• JVM specification and Java compiler code useful for SCJP preparation ?

  I'm preparing the SCJP exam with the almost official study book ("SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 6 Exam 310-065") I understand that Java programming is writting code that fulfills a certain high-level contract; So that Java can stay platform-independent. However, I have trouble understanding and remembering things when it comes to highly specific SCJP items (and they are numerous) The book stays high-level and does not provide examples of how one compiler would handle things. This is the same thing for runtime issues (JVM level): things are too much abstract for me. Rules often seems arbitrary and therefore, with no well defined purpose, are difficult to remember. Or maybe it's that sometimes I just don't get the underlying purpose. And here is the question: Would a JVM specification and/or some java compiler code help in preparing the SCJP? Have you had the need for such material or is the book sufficient enough? Also, please share the resources you used, apart from the book.

• What is Restful Routing?

  I have been searching pretty hard for info out on the net to explain exactly what Restful routing is but I haven't had any success. There are a lot of resources but not a who lot make sense to me. I'm familiar with Ruby On Rails's routing system and well as how Code Igniter and PhpCake route things but is there more to it than having a centralized location where you give out routes based on a directory structure? • Sending out 20,000+ emails with asp.net

  I am writing an application that will need to send a massive amount of emails to our students who will be selected from our database (each email will be personalized to the extent that will include their name, course of study etc...so needs to be sent one at a time). I could do this looping over an SmtpClient, but I'm afraid that with the numbers I'm trying to send, I'll ultimately run into timeout issues or my thread being killed because of lack of machine resources. At this point I'm just looking for suggestions of a better way to handle this, or if looping over SmtpClient is an ok solution, how I should go about handling it to prevent what I posted above. Would a web service be a better alternative? Please advise, TIA

  For example in Sketchflow add-in there is ApplicationFlowPane (derrived from PrototypingPane) which registers itself using IWindowService like this: service.RegisterPalette(this.PaletteRegistryName, this, this.Caption, this.KeyBinding); But i can't see where it is defined that it is docked on bottom pane. Before someone replies that it's at: %AppData%\Microsoft\Expression\Blend3\Workspaces No it's not there because those files do not exists at first run. The question is how can i put my window at certain position with Expression Blend 3 plug-in api ? update 1: It seems that to achive what i want i have to change design.xaml (where workspaces are defined) which is loaded from satellite assembly Microsoft.Expression.Blend.resources.dll (method load in class FrameworkPackage in Microsoft.Expression.Blend.dll). But since this dll is strongly named i can't change it. So now the question is. Is there any other way I can change Design Workspace at runtime ?

I'm reading the instructions from this website, it's an old post and I notice they specify in an update that Microsoft's MVC framework has long since included and Action Result that allows the same functionality they discuss thus rendering it obsolete, I've looked a bit online but haven't been able to find any resources that discuss this built-in functionality. • storing huge amount of records into classic asp cache object is SLOW

  we have some nasty legacy asp that is performing like a dog and i narrowed it down to because we are trying to store 15K+ records into the application cache object. but that's not the killer. before it stores it, it converts the ADO stream to XML then stores it. this conversion of the huge record set to XML spikes the CPU and causes all kinds of havoc on users when it's happening. and unfortunately we do this XML conversion to read the cache a lot, causing site wide performance problems. i don't have the resources to convert everything to .net. so that's out. but i need to obviously use caching, but int his case the caching is hurting instead of helping. is there a more effecient way to store this data instead of doing this xml conversion to/from every time we read/update the cache?

  Anyone knows some design patterns for hierarchical structures? For example, to manage inventory categories, accounting chart of accounts, divisions of human resources, etc.. I am looking for a better way of dealing with hierarchical items to which they should apply operations depending on the level of hierarchy. I have been studying the patterns by Martin Fowler, for example Accounting, but I wonder if there are other more generic. The problem is that operations apply to the items must be possible to change even at run time and may depend on other external variables. I thought of a kind of strategy pattern but would like to combine it with the fact that it is a hierarchical scheme. I would appreciate any reference to hierarchical patterns and you'll take care of them in depth.

• Get license file from a folder in C# project

  I have a license file that I need to access at runtime in order to create pdf-files. After I have created the in memory pdf, I need to call a method on that pdf to set the license, like this: pdf.SetLicense("pathToLicenseFileHere"); The license file is located in the same project as the.cs-file that creates the pdf, but is in a separate folder. I cannot get this simple thing to behave correctly, which makes me a bit sad, since it really shouldn't be that hard. :( I try to set the path like this: string path = @"\Resources\File.lic"; But it just isn't working out for me.

  In LINQ To Entities: How do I get the records (including both child and parent) based on a condition of the child in a one to many. My structure is set up as follows: GetResources() - returns a list of Resources. GetResources().ResourceNames - this is the child, which is an entity collection. GetResources().ResourceNames - a property of one record of this child is Name. I'd like to construct something like this: return (from p in repository.GetResources() where p.ResourceNames.Exist(r => r.Name.Contains(text, StringComparison.CurrentCultureIgnoreCase)) select p).ToList(); but of course, Exist doesn't exist. thanks.
