  • Why is C++ used for game engines? How about its future in game engines?

    C++, as I have seen, is being heavily used in 3d video game engines.... Is it because of the performance issues, legecy code or libraries such as DriverX? If performance, libraries and code infrastructure are the reasons, dosen't that make C++ indispensible, at least for game engines? (ie, we have no other option even in the very distant future). I asked this because, I have the right to know the upcomming future trends in game engines.

  • Uninstall libgl? Program using libgl instead of Nvidia's OpenGL libraries

    I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit. I'm trying to get valve's new Linux Steam client running, but having a bit of trouble getting it to detect the right libraries or at least I think that's the issue. I installed the latest 310.19 Nvidia proprietary drivers from geforce.com. Here's the screenshot: I tried uninstalling xserver-xorg-video-nouveau thinking this was the problem but I'm still getting the same error. Any ideas what I can do for Steam to detect the right Nvidia OpenGL libraries?

Specifically to get either (` and ~) or (´ and ¨) I have to press the key twice. Only these two keys behave this way - every other key mapping works.   • Generating and rendering not point-like particles on GPU

    Specifically I'm talking about particles as seen (for example) in the UE4 dev video here. They're not just points and seem to have a nice shape to them that seems to follow their movement. Is it possible to create these kinds of particles (efficiently) completely on the GPU (perhaps through something like motion? Or is the only (or most efficient) way to just create a small particle texture and render small quads for each particle?

    I'm trying to get vga_switcheroo to enable my integrated Intel HD 3000 instead of my ATI card.     There is a sound typically associated with a bright flash of light, which starts with a lower whirring noise, then breaks into a higher pitched sound. What is that type of sound called? I'm not sure how to begin searching for that, so a typical name for it would be very helpful.   • Problem with nvidia drivers instalation

    I want to install new nvidia drivers R310 so I downloaded driver and when I run it it says that i can't install new drivers because there is this nouveau driver. It asked me if I want to add blacklist file with nouveau in modprobe so I said yes please. After reboot same thing, I searched through endless topics/questions/etc, i ran sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-nouveau and tried other things and still didn't find solution how to install new drivers.
