  • protecting css selectors on large website

    I have content that appears within a corporate website inside an iframe. Several departments contribute their own CSS files to manage the overall UI and design. My problem is that they may use selectors for elements like td (for instance), without notice. Of course that will affect my own content in the frame unless I add a class to every td. I'm just using td as an example: the generic style for any element could change without notice. Is there any method/convention/practice I can use to protect my own styling?

  • Star rating not showing in rich snippets

    We've recently been doing a lot of work on our site's SEO (www.betterthanreviews.com). We recently did a push to update the rich snippets breadcrumb, meta description, and star rating. After giving Google some time to index the site, it has updated the breadcrumbs and meta descriptions for our review pages, but the stars are still not showing. This is currently how it appears on a Google search (link to the actual page: http://www.betterthanreviews.com/home-security/livewatch): This is what the Rich Snippets is supposed to look like, and how it appears in Google's testing tool: More context: As seen in our html, we are using schema.org language. We initially were using schema.org/Corporation for the site, but we now have the page labeled as schema.org/HomeAndConstructionBusiness because Google will not show star ratings for the Corporation language. However, in our Webmaster Tools, the Structured Data is still showing the Corporation language, which could be a potential issue. Here is a look at some of the coding that we used.     I'm working on a quiz application that will have a number of multiple choice questions. I'm waiting on the content from the client, but I'm hoping to start testing with some placeholder data for the time being. In order for the tests to be worthwhile, I probably need at least 100 multiple choice questions. I wanted to see if anyone knows of a resource or tool that can generate questions/multiple choice answers or propose another creative way to fill my quiz application with placeholder content. Ultimately the data will be in a MySQL database, but I don't really care what format the sample data is in (Excel, Word, JSON, etc.).

  • What is the best approach to copy public dynamic pages?

    Situation: the government is supposed to publish official information online such as acts and laws. Problem: they're using 90s expertise to do it. You can tell that by the constant use of deprecated html tags such as <table and the lack of any compression at all, which makes some documents go way over 700,000 bytes even though they're pure text. Side problem: some companies are actually editing and selling this content that should be public and free. What I need to know is the best approach to offer said official content in my own site for free. I've thought of setting up a mirror to copy the official pages from time to time, since some of them are updated frequently, which would automatically be compressed as all my pages are via htaccess.

  • How to create a good sitemap for dynamic website

    I have a website with dynamic content and different kind of pages. I have some pages that rarely change, and I have pages like blogs that change often. The blog pages also have links for sorting, for example sorting on date, asc, desc. On some of the pages I also have links to different tabbed content, and links that are just anchor links. Now when I use a xml sitemap generator then all the links are thrown into the site, and so I don't think all the links are really relevant. The blogposts up until now are also taken into the sitemap. Is this really necessary? I think the links to the blogposts can be indexed just fine. Is the best way to make a sitemap just to manually assign the main menu links to the sitemap, or is indexing everything really recommended?

  • Ars Technica .ars URL suffix -- Vanity or SEO Benefit?

    The Technology website Ars Technica has adjusted their URL rewrite rules to end with a .ars. Traditionally, sites have taken advantage of this URL rewriting capability to completely eliminate file suffixes like .html, .php, .aspx etc, under the theory that this made for better SEO (since the content of the URL was more relevant to the content) Ars Technicas, though, look like this: http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2011/03/flow-from-the-poles-drive-sunspot-levels.ars So, is Ars Technica adding the .ars file suffix purely a vanity play? Or is it an SEO trick to improve the site's SEO by cleverly inserting their site name into every URL slug? And, if this is indeed an effective SEO trick, should other sites follow suit?

    I am very new to xampp. I have made a fresh xampp install with the following commands. sudo su cd /tmp wget bit.ly/1cmyrUo -O xampp-32bit.run chmod 777 ./xampp-32bit.run sudo ./xampp-32bit.run Then I made a perl file to check whether my xampp works. The following is my sample.pl file content. #!usr/bin/perl print "content-type:text/html\n"; print(header()); use CGI qw(:standard); print(start_html()); print "Hello. I am ram"; print(end_html()); After copying my perl file from /home/vicky/desktop to /opt/lampp/cgi-bin. I started my xampp with the following command. /opt/lampp/lampp start Then I ran my sample.pl in the localhost with the help of the http://localhost/cgi-bin/sample.pl in my mozilla browser. I just got the following window. I found only answers relating to the 'new security concept error' and 'accessing virtual host issue'. I did came across an askubuntu query, a bid similar to that of mine. It had no answers but some comments. One comment suggested to change the file permissions. It directed to get help from here. It said to change the directory permission as 755 and file permission as 644 to resolve this kind of issue. When I tried to do that, I came to know that my cgi-bin directory already had 755 permission and my sample.pl had 644 permission. I have no solutions now. PostScript: I have attached the content of my /opt/lampp/apache2/conf/httpd.conf file. Hope this will help the answer-providers to understand my problem completely.     Hi folks, I'm building a new WordPress TwentyTen child theme using the ElastiCSS framework ( http://elasticss.com/ ) and am trying to figure out the best way of using some sort of dynamic content slideshow. What is the best way to implement a slideshow in a fluid or elastic layout such that it remains proportional to the other items in the content area? Should I even bother trying to obtain that? Or should I use like four different sizes in conjunction with something like the Less framework ( http://lessframework.com/ )? Thanks! (BTW, I've posted here because this was more of a "what's the best option" question than a "How do I program that?" question. If you think it would be more appropriate on SO, please move it there.)

  • SEO optimisation problems after Google Panda [on hold]

    I am currently trying to improve a website's SEO after it took quite a hit from the Google Panda upgrades. What are the main things I need to look at improving when trying to improve its ranking in Google? I have already made sure that the pages validate to W3C Standards, minimized css and js and done the obvious meta tags and header optimization but this hasn't made any difference yet. It could possibly be a content issue as the pages currently read much like a brochure and there were some pages with just a video and no text content on them which is also an issue. I've added a rel="nofollow" attribute to the links to these pages although i'm told this doesn't really work anymore. If anyone has any ideas let me know. Cheers!

    I, along with Alexis's help, delivered a Java EE 6 hands-on lab to a packed room of about 40+ attendees at Devoxx 2011. The lab was derived from the OTN Developer Days 2012 version but added lot more content to showcase several Java EE 6 technologies. The problem statement from the lab document states: This hands-on lab builds a typical 3-tier Java EE 6 Web application that retrieves customer information from a database and displays it in a Web page. The application also allows new customers to be added to the database as well. The string-based and type-safe queries are used to query and add rows to the database. Each row in the database table is published as a RESTful resource and is then accessed programmatically. Typical design patterns required by a Web application like validation, caching, observer, partial page rendering, and cross-cutting concerns like logging are explained and implemented using different Java EE 6 technologies. The lab covered Java Persistence API 2, Servlet 3, Enterprise JavaBeans 3.1, JavaServer Faces 2, Java API for RESTful Web Services 1.1, Contexts and Dependency Injection 1.0, and Bean Validation 1.0 over 47 pages of detailed self-paced instructions. Here is the complete Table of Contents: The lab can be downloaded from here and requires only NetBeans IDE "All" or "Java EE" version, which includes GlassFish anyway. All the feedback received from the lab has been incorporated in the instructions and bugs filed (Updated 49559, 205232, 205248, 205256). 80% of the attendees could easily complete the lab and some even completed in much less than 3 hours. That indicates that either more content needs to be added to the lab or the intellectual level of the attendees at the conference was pretty high. It explains how: Create a 2-instance GlassFish cluster Front-end with a Web server and a load balancer Demonstrate session replication and fail over Monitor the application using JavaScript The complete lab instructions and source code are available and you can try them. I plan to continue evolving the contents for the Java EE 6 hands-on lab to cover more technologies and features and will announce them on this blog.     I have implemented a simple pixel shader which can replace a particular colour in a sprite with another colour. It looks something like this: sampler input : register(s0); float4 PixelShaderFunction(float2 coords: TEXCOORD0) : COLOR0 { float4 colour = tex2D(input, coords); if(colour.r == sourceColours[0].r && colour.g == sourceColours[0].g && colour.b == sourceColours[0].b) return targetColours[0]; return colour; } What I would like to do is have the function take in 2 textures, a default table, and a lookup table (both same dimensions). Grab the current pixel, and find the location XY (coords) of the matching RGB in the default table, and then substitute it with the colour found in the lookup table at XY. I have figured how to pass the Textures from C# into the function, but I am not sure how to find the coords in the default table by matching the colour. Could someone kindly assist?     I own a website that requires a fairly largish amount of users to collaborate and commit occasionally to make the website valuable, so basically, the website can't be any valuable without users helping me put some content on it. To not get confused, I'm thinking of websites like Wikipedia, Stack Exchange and Yahoo! Answers, most of the content is based on peer effort. How do they actually get users interested and committed in the first place? What are the things I have to do to get users involved in the website and actually help me grow it bigger?

  • SEO Friendly URL for search keywords

    I have a website where you can search for a brands, item, and content inside my web. It was designed with tab for each search type, but I want to make the url when changing the tab user friendly and good for SEO. Is it better to have a url for search result like this www.example.com/search/{search_keyword}/{tab} or www.example.com/search/{search_keyword}?tab={tab} or www.example.com/search/?search={search_keyword}&tab={tab} where {search_keyword} is the keyword that user input, and {tab} is either brands / item / content, because when I look at facebook, stackoverflow, and some other website, they use query string for their search keyword Edit My past url is only www.example.com/search/{search_keyword}, and I just added the tab design recently. Consider that I should go with option 1 from the above option, should I make www.example.com/search/{search_keyword} the default for 1 of the 3 tab, and make the other 2 tab with www.example.com/search/{search_keyword}/{tab} to retain the score for the page, or should I make all the tab url with www.example.com/search/{search_keyword}/{tab} and use a permanent redirect from www.example.com/search/{search_keyword} to one of the url tab

  • Share on Facebook does not show thumbnail images

    I have a PHP application which has a "Share on Facebook" button that, On the development server shows the thumbnail images correctly and allows the user to select between them On the live server, it does NOT show the thumbnail images at all. The relevant portion of the .htaccess file is: # Set up caching on media files for 2 days <FilesMatch "\.(gif|jpg|jpeg|png|flv)$"> ExpiresDefault A172800 Header append Cache-Control "public" </FilesMatch> I'm using the exact same set of php files and .htaccess, but the server configuration is different. What could be causing this? Note that the text appears fine. Edit1 We are also doing some URL rewriting related to images in the .htaccess (on both servers): ... RewriteRule ^.*/content/image/(.*)$ content/image/$1 [L] ... RewriteRule ^.*/images/(.*)$ images/$1 [L] ... Would that be somehow making a difference? Images appear fine all throughout the site.
