• What is the proper way to wait a script loaded completely before another

  I am making a website that is divided by several sections <div id='section-1' class='section'>web content</div> <div id='section-2' class='section'>web content</div> I have like ten sections on my webpage ,each sections height is set to the user window height when document is ready by javascript $('.section').height($(window).height()); Some effects like slideshows on my webpage require the calculated height of the section in order to work properly. Therefore I always use something like this at document ready as a solution. setTimeout(startslideshow,1000); setTimeout(startanimations,1000); ...etc To make sure the section height is the user window height before the slideshow's code start because the sections cannot change to user window height instantly once the webpage loaded will generate serious problems in my slideshow code,like wrong calculated positions. Therefore there will be a situation that's after the page loaded, there will be about a second everything is messed up,before everything can works properly, how could I avoid that being seen by the user? I tried to $(document).hide(),or $('html,body').hide(), then fade in after a second,but I get other weird problems, especially on ipad,my fixed position top navigation bar will always become 'not fixed' while user is scrolling. As I am a self-learner, I afraid my method is not typical. I want to know what is the common ways of real web programmers usually do when they have to divide his webpage into different sections and set its height to window height , then make sure the other effects that's depends on the section height works properly and avoid to wait the height change for a second?

• Mysterious combination

  I decided to learn concurrency and wanted to find out in how many ways instructions from two different processes could overlap. The code for both processes is just a 10 iteration loop with 3 instructions performed in each iteration. I figured out the problem consisted of leaving X instructions fixed at a point and then fit the other X instructions from the other process between the spaces taking into account that they must be ordered (instruction 4 of process B must always come before instruction 20). I wrote a program to count this number, looking at the results I found out that the solution is n Combination k, where k is the number of instructions executed throughout the whole loop of one process, so for 10 iterations it would be 30, and n is k*2 (2 processes). In other words, n number of objects with n/2 fixed and having to fit n/2 among the spaces without the latter n/2 losing their order. Ok problem solved. No, not really. I have no idea why this is, I understand that the definition of a combination is, in how many ways can you take k elements from a group of n such that all the groups are different but the order in which you take the elements doesn't matter. In this case we have n elements and we are actually taking them all, because all the instructions are executed ( n C n). If one explains it by saying that there are 2k blue (A) and red (B) objects in a bag and you take k objects from the bag, you are still only taking k instructions when 2k instructions are actually executed.   I have this script that run to fix my menu bar to the browser on scroll. Nothing really needs to change here (works as it should). • VLC (Server) re-stream Security Camera Feed

  I purchased a Swann Home Security DVR system and was hoping for some help on how to duplicate the streaming video on my server. In order to get their web view (streaming video in the browser) to work, I had to install the following plugins: HiDvrPlugin.dmg for mac. Hidvrocx.cab for Windows. I was originally thinking it was a sign of some form of DRM? Maybe. Maybe not. HTML wise, the following code is in the source of the safari version of the web view: <embed pluginspage="SurveilClient.dmg" width="10px" height="10px" type="application/x-scplugin" id="MacDiv" style="height: 592px; width: 720px; left: 278px; top: 61px; "> It seems to be the main display area. Using wireshark, I am able to see that the video stream is on port 9000. However, I have no idea what type of stream it is. I've tried opening it in VLC with no such luck. http://dvr_ip:9000 tcp://dvr_ip:9000 My hope was to do the following to redistribute the feed vlc dvr_ip:9000 --sout h264-version-on-localhost:3000 TLDR; Trying to re-distribute a stream from a security camera (can't tell the format) using vlc (re-distribute via h.264 / HTML5). Not sure how to accomplish this. Is it possible that the software has some type of DRM that only the plugins can decode?

  I get this error when I have VM running in VMWare Workstation on my work PC and try Remote Desktop-ing in from my iMac at home. I just upgraded VMWare Workstation to 7.0 from 6.0 and now I'm getting it when I try to resume my VM at work. It then asks me the scary question of whether I want to preserve or discard the suspended state. I don't want to lose stuff! ack! Update I backed up my VM and tried hitting that "discard" button and the result was a reboot of the VM. I then tried restoring to a snapshot, and none of my snapshots work! Is there anyway to fix this so I can run 7 but still have my old snapshots? The frame buffer layout of the current display cannot be made to match the frame buffer layout stored in the snapshot. The dimensions of the frame buffer in the snapshot are: Max width 3200, Max height 1770, Max size 22659072. The dimensions of the frame buffer on the current display are: Max width 3200, Max height 1600, Max size 20512768. Error encountered while trying to restore the virtual machine state from file "C:\Documents and Settings\adam\My Documents\My Virtual Machines\dev\Windows XP Professional.vmss". What do I do so I don't break things horribly?

• How can I most efficiently batch resize images on a Mac?

  I've been batch-resizing images through Preview (OS X) through the menu bar, but I want a simpler workflow, since I do this a dozen times a day. What I want: 1. Select a group of image files in finder 2. Hit a button or two (menu item or keyboard shortcut) to do the following: a. Scale all the pictures to 600 pixels wide b. Save as JPG files at 75% quality What I also want: - All of the above, plus step a(1): Crop images to 200 pixel height I can do all that manually, to a batch of files, through Preview. I can do it one at a time with some keyboard shortcuts in Photoshop or Pixelmator. Automator (using Preview) can scale to 600 pixels on the longest dimension, but it doesn't let me specify width. (It can scale specifically to width before cropping height.) It can change to JPG, but it can't specify image quality. And I can assign a keyboard shortcut to the whole process. Is that my best option on a Mac? Can I accomplish this more efficiently through another app like Quicksilver?

• Creating mdraid device on top of other existing mdraid devices

  I'm considering creating something like "hierarchical raid" and wondering whether it is possible using pure mdraid. Moreover, I'm going to boot from this device. I'm using Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS with Grub2 bootloader. Motivation behind doing that is: I have 4 x 1tb 7200rpm disks. Two are newer and faster (up to 200mb/sec) and other two are slower (up to 140mb/sec). I want to create RAID-0 device from them. When creating such RAID-0 directly from 4 hard disks, I get summary speed up to ~480mb/sec. That is roughly 4*120mb/sec, so RAID-0 works with speed of the slowest device. I have an idea to create a separate RAID-0 md0 device from 500gb partitions of slower hard disks. Theoretically, this md0 device will have speed 2*140=240~280mb/sec. After that, I'm going to add this md0 device to RAID-0 with faster disks, finishing with up to 3*200=600mb/sec. Stripe-width for this raid will be 2x times bigger than for underlying raid with slow disks. Questions are: is it possible or I'm missing something? will that work as expected? can I boot from such consolidated raid device? any better ideas? any pitfalls? I don't want to use fakeraid for consolidating slow disks for multiple reasons (portability, ability to customize parameters and so on). PS Speed is needed for home virtualization server and just for experience/fun. Reliability is provided via regular automatic backups to a separate device. PPS I considered also using different stripe-width for hard disks with different speed in single raid, but mdraid does not seem to support that.

  I've been reading everything I can find about partition alignment and filesystem optimization (ext4 and xfs) but still don't know enough to be confident in setting up my current configuration. My remaining confusion comes from the LVM layer and if I should use raid parameters on the filesystem in guest os'es. My main questions are: When I use 'pvcreate --dataalignment' do I use the stripe-width as calculated for a filesystem on RAID (128kB for ext4 in my situation), the Stripe size of the RAID set (256kB), something else altogether, or do I not need this? When I create ext2/3/4 or xfs filesystems in guests on the Logical Volumes, should I add the settings for the underlying RAID (e.g. mkfs.ext4 -b 4096 -E stride=64,stripe-width=128)? Does anyone see any glaring errors in my set up below? I'm running some benchmarks now but haven't done enough to start comparing results. I have four drives in RAID 10 on a 3ware 9750-4i controller (more details on the settings below) giving me a 6.0TB device at /dev/sda. I know there are other ways of handling that but this method works best for my situation.   I've installed statusnet 0.9.1 on a Windows Server via the WAMP stack and on the whole it seems to be fine. However, when logging in using IE7 or Chrome the browers invoke a file download, i.e. the File Download dialog is displayed. • Printing from Firefox on different printers and setting the page details beforehand

  I´ve got an odd problem and I have not been able to fix this. I have a computer which is connected to two printers. One is a receipt printer (EPSON TM-U220), and the other one is an impact printer (Epson LX-300+). From Firefox, I need to print on both printers at different moments. So first I print on the receipt printer, then on the impact printer, etc. However, whenever I first print on the receipt printer, and then go back to the impact printer, the printout is only the width of the page of the receipt printer. That is, the page does not come out properly, just the left part of the page is used for printing and the right part is completely empty, as if I am just printing on the small receipt paper. And there is no way I can tell Firefox that I am printing on this larger printer. The second print on the impact printer goes fine. Firefox now knows it is printing on the impact printer, and it comes out properly on the full page width. But every first print on the impact printer is using the wrong paper size. How can I fix this? When I go to PAGE PREVIEW I can not set the printer UNTIL I actually print the page. If I go to PRINT PREVIEW CONFIGURE PAGE, I can not set the printer I will be using. I can only do so if I go to PRINT PREVIEW PRINT (here is the dropdown box to set the printer). But I can only set the printer and then click PRINT, or CANCEL. If I click PRINT, then the computer remembers the setting but that page will come our wrong, and when I click cancel it simply does not remember the printer I just set.

• Problem mirroring two monitors with different resolution

  Hello I am trying to put two monitors in mirror mode (Windows 7 Professional) with Ultramon 3.1.0. The two monitors: Main monitor: 24" Asus. 1680x1050 resolution (16/10). Secondary monitor: 19" LG. 1280x1024 resolution. The graphic card is a Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT. I have installed the Ultramon 3.1.0 and I have created a mirror, with the "stretch mirror image to fill monitor" and the "disable video overlays and 3D acceleration". When I start the mirroring, there are two zones in the lateral edges that are not displayed in the second monitor. I think this is because the width of the main monitor is 1680 px. and the width of the secondary monitor is 1280 px., but I have indicated "stretch mirror image to fill monitor" in the options. The same occurs in the top and the bottom edges, but the diference is minimal (1050 vs 1024 pixels). I want the same image (distortioned in the secondary monitor if is neccesary), but I don't know what is failing. Someone can help me, please? I have read Mirrored monitors of different resolution. • Ubuntu 10.04 network manager issues

  I was using the default network manager to connect to my wi-fi network, but if the connection is dropped or router restarted the network manager wont reconnect automatically after i guess a couple of tries and just gives a pop-up to connect manually . To avoid this annoyance I installed WICD but though it does try to reconnect to the network after a drop in connection it is unable to resolve the ip address and i am left with an even bigger annoyance . 1. Is there a way to counter either of these issues ? 2. Something like a background process that will check network status periodically and then try to connect to a favored network ? • xen + debian network after upgrade squeeze to wheeze

  I've got a Debian + Xen server. After a system upgrade to the stable version the network doesn't come up after boot. Every time after reboot I need to bring it up manually. The network configuration was not changed during upgrade. • Can't connect to wi-fi hotspot in Ubuntu 11.10

  I'm new to Ubuntu. I'm having a wireless network problem in Ubuntu 11.10. I made a hotspot using Connectify from a computer which is running Windows 7. I can access it in Windows 7 but not in Ubuntu 11.10. Every time I access it,I get a message "disconnected". I'm using msi fx 400 notebook with Intel Centrino wireless -N 1000 wireless card. • What is wrong with my gtkrc file?

  I have written following gtkrc file from some other theme gtkrc file. This theme is normal theme with buttons using pixmap theme engine. I have also given background image to GtkEntry. Problem is that, When i use this theme my buttons doesn't show text one them and my entry box does not show cursor.   Hello I am not a PHP programmer so I have no idea what the problem is here.   I am writing one of my own JQuery plugin. And I got some strange which make me confused. I am using the function "getDays()" to get the available days list and stored the data inside daysWithRecords, and final the UI datepicker's function "beforeShowDay()" called the function "checkAvailability()" to set the days. the variable "daysWithRecords" was declared inside Igtomw = function(elem , options) and was initialized inside the function getDays() I am using the function "initialWatchHistory()" to initialization and render the JQuery UI datepicker in the web. My problem is the function "checkAvailability()" cannot see the variable "daysWithRecords".The firebug prompts me that "daysWithRecords" is "undefined". this is the first time I write my first plugin.
