• How can I verify that javascript and images are being cached?

  I want to verify that the images, css, and javascript files that are part of my page are being cached by my browser. I've used Fiddler and Google Page Speed and it's unclear whether either is giving me the information I need. Fiddler shows the HTTP 304 response for images, css, and javascript which should tell the browser to use the cached copy. Google Page Speed shows the 304 response but doesn't show a Transfer Size of Zero, instead it shows the full file size of the resource. Note also, I have seen Google Page Speed report a 200 response but then put the word (cache) next to the 200 (so Status is 200 (cache)), which doesnt make a lot of sense. Any other suggestions as to how I can verify whether the server is sending back images, css, javascript after they've been retrieved and cached by a previous page hit?

• ASP.NET MVC 2 Areas 404

  Hey, Has anyone been able to get the Areas in ASP.NET MVC 2 to work? I created a new Area called "Secure" and placed a new controller in it named HomeController. I then Created a new Home/Index.aspx view. However, when I browse to http://localhost/myapp/Secure/ it gives a 404 resource cannot be found. http://localhost/myapp/Secure/Home gives the same error. My area registration looks like this: public override void RegisterArea(AreaRegistrationContext context) { context.MapRoute( "Secure_default", "Secure/{controller}/{action}/{id}", new { action = "Index", id = UrlParameter.Optional } ); } I also tried this: public override void RegisterArea(AreaRegistrationContext context) { context.MapRoute( "Secure_default", "Secure/{controller}/{action}/{id}", new { controller = "Home", action = "Index", id = UrlParameter.Optional } ); } Thanks, Justin

  I was reading this question and realized it might be helpful for entry- and pro-level developers alike (including myself) to have a common reference for best practices in using gdb. Many questions asked on Stack Overflow could easily be solved by taking some time to step some code in a debugger, and it would be good to have a community-approved resource to "teach them how to fish", so to speak. Even for those seasoned veterans who occasionally find themselves in gdb when they are accustomed to a GUI-tastic debugger might benefit from those who are much more familiar with the command line tool. For starters (both to gdb and to prime this thread) I submit: Ninefinger's gdb primer The gdb quick reference guide, which is useful for telling you what commands are available but not how best to use them. My hope is this thread is a seed planted that is of continued value to the community. If by "continued value" the community decides to nix it altogether, well then the masses have spoken.

  Is there a way getting all countries, states,cities zipcodes/ in one single database. I have been looking all over. I discovered geonames.org, which has I guess all of the content. But there is no way to fetch that data directly. I am using rails. If there any helpers or Plugins, it'd be great. It would be awesome if there is a complete resource in any parsable format which I can use to get this database in place. Please recommend if you any thanks I do have the iso country code list but no States for some countries. Thanks in advance

• Using ClaimsPrincipalPermissionAttribute, how do I catch the SecurityException?

  In my MVC application I have a Controller Action that Deletes a customer, which I'm applying Claims Based Authorization to using WIF. Problem: if someone doesn't have access they see an exception in the browser (complete with stacktrace), but I'd rather just redirect them. • Cannot Debug Visual Basic 6 ActiveX Component On 64-bit OS

  Hi, The situation might sound a bit weird but I have to play with what I have. There's a Win2003 64-bit server OS and a legacy application written using Visual Studio 6. The app consists of two parts: ActiveX components written in VB6 and C++ code which uses them. I need to debug the components' code. I installed Visual Studio 6 on the server and I'm able to step into the component's code. Then I got following situation: 1) C++ code works until it needs to instantiate component A. 2) At this step we switch to VB6 and start debugging Component's A. 3) In the very beginning component A creates an instance of a class C exposed by component B. At this step VB6 debugger shows error message with title "OLEDB32.DLL" and following text: "Failed to load resource DLL C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\System\Ole DB\OLEDB32R.DLL" Additional information: The last step in initialization of the class C is opening an ADO connection to SQL server using OLEDB provider. I'd appreciate any ideas on how resolve this problem. Thanks in advance.

I've sent a list of appropriate DNN modules to our client but it may take them forever to get back to me. In the mean time they still submitting requests to us to create redirects for them. if there's no cost involved then i wont have to wait for them to get back to me. so I'm looking for a Quick and free way to enable the clients to set these up on this own.   I am trying to add the path /_vti_bin/Lists.asmx to my ASP.NET MVC 2 web application. I am registering the route as follows: routes.IgnoreRoute("{resource}.asmx/{*pathInfo}"); routes.Add(new Route("_vti_bin/Lists.asmx", new ListsHandler())); where ListHandler is defined as: public sealed class ListsHandler : IRouteHandler { #region IRouteHandler Members public IHttpHandler GetHttpHandler(RequestContext requestContext) { throw new NotImplementedException(); } #endregion } But when I start the MVC application and try to navigate to http://localhost:8888/_vti_bin/Lists.asmx, I get an HTTP 404 error, rather than an exception raised. Is this even possible in MVC? Do I need to add an Lists.asmx ASPX web service file to my project in a particular place (I cannot create the _vti_bin folder in the Visual Studio project)?

• Artistic aspects of UI?

  Consider a single button. At one extreme, we have a black OpenGL window, with: outline (in white) of a rectangle bitmap remdered font inside of it, saying "Ok" At the other extreme, we have Mac OS X, a button that is: well rounded has some gradient showing light effects on it nice antialiased "OK" soft shadow of some sort These two UIs present very very different user experiences. The former says "This is from the 80s" the latter says "this is professional". This is something I do not understand well as a programmer (and don't know where to learn about this). Does anyone know of a good technical resource for this? [I'd prefer things that draws upon psychology / perception literature to say why to do something rather than design books that just says "use color XYZ with a gradient of blah"]

  I'm struggling to set connect a Java program to MySQL using JPA/Hibernate.   I have a list of strings which are candidates for Enumerations values. They are Don't send diffs 500 lines 1000 lines 5000 lines Send entire diff The problem is that spaces, special characters are not a part of identifiers and even cannot start with a number, so I would be sanitizing these values to only chars, numbers and _ To keep the original values I thought of putting these strings in the DescriptionAttribute, such that the final Enum should look like public enum DiffBehvaiour { [Description("Don't send diffs")] Dont_send_diffs, [Description("500 lines")] Diff_500_lines, [Description("1000 lines")] Diff_1000_lines, [Description("5000 lines")] Diff_5000_lines, [Description("Send entire diff")] Send_entire_diff } Then later using code I will retrieve the real string associated with the enumeration value, so that the correct string can be sent back the web service to get the correct resource. I want to know how to create the DescriptionAttribute using System.Reflection.Emit Basically the question is where and how to store the original string so that when the Enumeration value is chosen, the corresponding value can be retrieved. I am also interested in knowing how to access DescriptionAttribute when needed.

• Should I put my output files in source control?

  I've been asked to put every single file in my project under source control, including the database file (not the schema, the complete file). This seems wrong to me, but I can't explain it. Every resource I find about source control tells me not to put generated output files in a source control system. And I understand, it's not "source" files. However, I've been presented with the following reasoning: Who cares? We have plenty of bandwidth. I don't mind having to resolve a conflict each time I get the latest revision, it's just one click It's so much more convenient than having to think about good ignore files Also, if I have to add an external DLL file in the bin folder now, I can't forget to put it in source control, as the bin folder is not being ignored now. The simple solution for the last bullet-point is to add the file in a libraries folder and reference it from the project. Please explain if and why putting generated output files under source control is wrong.

Does the socket really get closed? Are there side effects? P.S. This is using C# 3.0 on the .NET MicroFramework, but I suppose the c#, the language, should function identically. The reason i am asking is that occasionally, very rarely, I run out of sockets (which is a very precious resource on a .NET MF devices).

  I have two maven projects Project AAA * AAA-Core * AAA-Other Project BBB * BBB-Core * BBB-AAA-specific I want to create a build plan in Bamboo to build the BBB-AAA-specific project. The plan configuration is such that this project depends on the AAA-Other projec build. Thus everything should work ok. But when I try to run the BBB-AAA-specific Bamboo plan I get an error that states: "Unable to find resource 'foo.bar.AAA:AAA:pom:0.0.1-SNAPSHOT' in repository snapshots (http://foo.bar.com)" What is going on? The bamboo builds for "AAA-Core" and "AAA-Other" work as expected.

  I currently have a web form aspx page that calls RegisterClientScriptBlock. This sends down message text that I use for client side validation e.g. <script type="text/javascript"> //<![CDATA[ var c_errorMessages = { RequiredField : "* Mandatory field" }; //]]> </script> The values are generated on the server side based on culture and resource files. I believe you cannot use RegisterClientScriptBlock with MVC. Any ideas on how I can achieve this with MVC?

  I am developing a WPF application that must run using Windows Classic theme. The application creates a dialog box containing a ListBox. When the dialog box is shown, it must be disabled for 1s before accepting any input. I am accomplishing this with a style trigger, and it works. However, the ListBox shows a white background when it's disabled, which I can't seem to get rid of. When using the aero theme, the following style resource fixes the issue: <SolidColorBrush x:Key="{x:Static SystemColors.ControlBrushKey}" Color="Transparent"/> But when using Windows Classic theme, the white background reappears. How can i remedy the situation for Classic theme???

I need to minimize or resize it in order to remove the shadow of FolderBrowserDialog. How can I solvet his issue? Any help plz?

  Hi, I switched from MVC 1 to MVC 2. I am using a file.axd httphandler in my application and I set routes.IgnoreRoute("{resource}.axd/{*pathInfo}"); in my global routing. Since MVC 2 MVC only ignores requests to /file.axd but not to /folder/file.axd. Any changes in MVC 2? I just want to make sure that all requests in any folder to any .axd file will get processed by my httphandler. Thanks!

• Concatenating text in an ASP.NET localized label

  Trying to localize text in ASP.NET labels... want to add a ':' after the localized text. I could just add the ':' to the localized text in the resource file, but that seems silly... there should be an easy way to do this. <asp:Label id="RoleTypeLabel" runat="server" Text='<%$ Resources: GS3, RoleTypeLabel %>:' AssociatedControlID="RoleTypeDropDown"></asp:Label> (note the ':' at the end of Text='...') Of course, this doesn't work... and neither does anything I can think of to concatenate a ':' onto the end of the localized text. Anyone know how to do it? TIA, James

• Shared Source CLI 4.0?

  Microsoft released the Shared Source Common Language Infrastructure (the code previously known as ROTOR) code some years ago basically as a reference implementation of the .NET runtime. While the actual .NET runtime (mscorlib, mscoree, mscorjit, etc.) aren't compiled from the code, debugging them shows that they are remarkably similar and at a minimum share much of the same memory structures. This has been an invaluable resource when debugging tricky system behavior with .NET 2.0 compiled assemblies. Now that 4.0 has been released with major changes to the runtime I'd love to find the reference source for that as well. Microsoft has changed names for the source in the past so I'm either searching for the wrong thing, or it hasn't been released. Is there reference source for a .NET 4.0 compatible runtime?
