• Preferred Windows Java Development Environment

  I've been a Linux Java developer for years and have loved it. I just got a new laptop which is running Windows 7. I could wipe the drive and go back to my typical Linux dev setup: vim for editing, tabbed Bash windows running javac and java for smaller projects, ant for big projects That said, I'm really thinking it couldn't hurt to learn to develop in a new environment. So, with that in mind, are there any Windows-based Java devs out there? What setup do you like to use to get things done? It'd be interesting to hear both ways to emulate my Linux-based environment as well as completely different styles that I might benefit from trying.

• AES acceleration for Java

  I want to encrypt/decrypt lots of small (2-10kB) pieces of data. The performance is ok for now: On a Core2Duo, I get about 90 MBytes/s AES256 (when using 2 threads). But I may need to improve that in the future - or at least reduce the impact on the CPU. Is it possible to use dedicated AES encryption hardware with Java (using JCE, or maybe a different API)? Would Java take advantage of special CPU features (SSE5?!), if I get a better CPU? Or are there faster JCE providers? (I tried SunJCE and BouncyCastle - no big difference.) Other possiblilities?

• JSON documents and SQL database tables

  Do JSON documents in RavenDB cost more than the SQL Server tables in terms of the storage and query costs. And also for centralized access, which one is better? What are the disadvantages of NON-SQL databases like RavenDB,CouchDB,MongoDB, etc... ? I can get that some of these are open source and support more datatypes like enums,objects,etc. but otherwise i don't see any big advantage? Currently there is a problem of storing huge amount of logs from various locations. I am planning to suggest these to my manager so just need a clear idea.

• Are we using IoC effectively?

  So my company uses Castle Windsor IoC container, but in a way that feels "off": All the data types are registered in code, not the config file. All data types are hard-coded to use one interface implementation. In fact, for nearly all given interfaces, there is and will only ever be one implementation. All registered data types have a default constructor, so Windsor doesn't instantiate an object graph for any registered types. The people who designed the system insist the IoC container makes the system better. We have 1200+ public classes, so its a big system, the kind where you'd expect to find a framework like Windsor. But I'm still skeptical. Is my company using IoC effectively? Is there an advantage to new'ing objects with Windsor than new'ing objects with the new keyword?

• What's the best way to match a query to a set of keywords?

  Pretty much what you would assume Google does. Advertisers come in and big on keywords, lets say "ipod", "ipod nano", "ipod 60GB", "used ipod", etc. Then we have a query, "I want to buy an ipod nano" or "best place to buy used ipods" what kind of algorithms and systems are used to match those queries to the keyword set. I would imagine that some of those keyword sets are huge, 100k keywords made up of one or more actual words. on top of that queries can be 1-n words as well. Any thoughts, links to wikipedia I can start reading? From what I know already I would use some stemmed hash in disk(CDB?) and a bloom filter to check to see if I should even go to disk.

  I found this question, but the question is about how to get an image from the clip board into a wyziwyg editor! My question is "How can I paste an image from the clipboard into a field (what field is not that big issue as long as it works)", and then sent to the server. Jira has this functionality, so it should be possible! Any ideas on how to do this? Just to explain the complete workflow; I would like to have a plave to multi upload images, where the paste from clipboard also is an option. The upload will be some ajax of some sort, bt is not important in this context! Thanks

• can you use proxies to do load/stress testing on a server, with proxy serving as a sort of mirror?

  suppose I want to test a server's and its web application's ability to handle many simultaneous connections well and show decent latency. So ideally I would want a thousand machines to bombard it with usage requests, but that's not practicable. So instead, can I just make a testing script with a thousand threads to run on the same server and have them perform the testing, connecting to the server via a geographically far-away proxy? My reasoning here is that the signal will have to travel realistically big distances to the proxy and back, so that sort of emulates the reality of real clients accessing the server. Then again, to take this one step further, are there prepackaged emulators/frameworks that could perform a similar test without using internet at all, just simulating the latency of the network, realistically creating all the socket connections and other resource intensive stuff etc?

  Hi, I'm thinking about the GlassFish platform for my new app. My app env. doesn't have a big volume of data to handle, but a lot of users writing/reading the same data A very volotile portion of the data updates every 200milsec by diff users. Therefore I'd like that type of data to be in memory only and accessible to the whole app My questions: How do I use a global object in memory with GF? a. use a static variable object - for that I guess I need to make sure GF is running on only 1 JVM -- how to I configure GF to run on 1 jvm? b. use HttpContext - same as a.   There are two obvious ways in C to provide outside access to internal attribute values (A) provide a generic interface that accepts a list of attributes that changes over time (some added / some die) or (B) a specific interface for each and every attribute. Example A: int x_get_attribute_value(ATT att) { if (a) return a_val; if (b) return b_val; } Example B: A_Enum x_get_a_type_attribute() {} B_Enum x_get_b_type_attribute() {} I recall that Eclipse's API is very much like A (I could be wrong). What I can't do is come up with a compelling argument against either. A is clean - any user will no where to go to find out a property value. It can evolve cleanly without leaving dead interfaces around. B has type checking to a degree - this is C enums! Is there a big hitter argument that pushes the balance away from opinion?

• [JavaScript] Loading Google Maps API after the page is displayed

  Hello, My landing page contains a big google maps portion, which slows down the loading time. I am trying to do the following: Load the static elements first so the page loads fast initially. Display a loading notification in the map placeholder so that the user knows that the map is coming up Load and display the map I have done this: $(document).ready(function() { map_initialize(); } map_initialize() being the function which loads the map into its container div. However, this still will not display the static elements fist. The page will wait until the map_initialize() is finished, then load the static elements at the same time as the map. Thanks,

  in a C# file i have a class Archiver { [DllImport("Archiver.dll")] public static extern void archive(string data, StringBuilder response); } string data is an input, and StringBuilder response is where the function writes something the archive function prototype (written in C) looks like this: void archive(char * dataChr, char * outChr); and it receives a string in dataChr, and then does a strcpy(outChr,"some big text"); from C# i call it something like this: string message = "some text here"; StringBuilder response = new StringBuilder(10000); Archiver.archive(message,response); this works, but the problem, as you might see is that i give a value to the StringBuilder size, but the archive function might give back a (way) larger text than the size i've given to my StringBuilder. any way to fix this?

• Looking for easy way to analyze var_dump (PHP) on large objects

  I know (PHP's) var_dump is supposed to be "human readable" and all, but analyzing large objects is just a pain in the neck. I am struggling to make sense of a few of the large objects that are being passed around in a script that we are running. (I know that using xdebug with and IDE is a good idea, but I have not been able to get xdebug to run on this project for some reason - several days lost, ugh). Any ideas on how I can easily digest the contents of a really big var_dump? Any ideas are welcome... Although I am hoping that there is something similar to Thomas Frank's JSON tool (where you just put some code in and it gives a nice graphical representation).

  Hi, I'm using Delphi7 and i need a solution to a big problem.Can someone provide me a faster way for searching through files and folders than using findnext and findfirst? because i also process the data for each file/folder (creation date/author/size/etc) and it takes a lot of time...I've searched a lot under WinApi but probably I haven't see the best function in order to accomplish this. All the examples which I've found made in Delphi are using findfirst and findnext... Also, I don't want to buy components or use some free ones... Thanks in advance!

• HTML: adjusting the font size according to the screen size

  I am building an intranet website that is intended to be seen by mobile phones using one of the following resolutions: 240x320, 320x240, 360x640 and 800x352. All content is to be seen covering the full screen. No scroll should be necessary. I have developed, initially for 360x640. When this content is seen on 240x320 or 320x240 the letter is too big and the user has to scroll to see all content. Is there any way to scale the letters down or up automatically, so the content will fit on every screen size? I mean, adjusting the text font size according to the current screen resolution? thanks for any help.

• Most efficient way for a lookup/search in a huge list (python)

  Hey guys, -- I just parsed a big file and I created a list containing 42.000 strings/words. I want to query [against this list] to check if a given word/string belongs to it. So my question is: What is the most efficient way for such a lookup? A first approach is to sort the list [list.sort()] and then just use the if word in list: print 'word' -- which is really trivial and I am sure there is a better way to do it. My goal is to apply a fast lookup that finds whether a given string is in this list or not. If you have any ideas of another data structure, they are welcome. Yet, I want to avoid for now more sophisticated data-structures like Tries etc. I am interested in hearing ideas (or tricks) about fast lookups or any other python library methods that might do the search faster than the simple 'in'. • c# RichTextBox Tab size

  Hello, I'm using System.Windows.Forms.RichTextBox and by default the tab size is 8 spaces. The RichTextBox itself is not that big and 8 spaces leads to a lot of scrolling. Is there any way to make it 4 spaces. If it matters, the control is initially blank and the user starts entering stuff and the tabs have to shorter (4 spaces) as the user enters text with tabs. I tried http://stackoverflow.com/questions/154204/modifying-default-tab-size-in-richtextbox and a few variations of it but no luck.

  I wrote code that injects a function in Internet Explorer/Chrome but it doesn't work with these processes. Basically, it fills one big structure with all the APIs my function needs, strings, and other data, then it opens a process to get a handle, virtualallocex to allocate enough memory to store a function and structure there, and it writes the function and the structure in allocated memory. It then runs createremotethread there with the function as a starting address and structure as parameter. It works all great with calc/notepad/winamp processes but I have problems with browser injection. • How can I synchronize database access between a write-thread and a read-thread?

  My program has two threads: Main execution thread that handles user input and queues up database writes A utility thread that wakes up every second and flushes the writes to the database Inside the main thread, I occasionally need to make reads on the database. When this happens, performance is not important, but correctness is. (In a perfect world, I would be reading from a cache, not making a round-trip to the database - but let's put that aside for the sake of discussion.) How do I make sure that the main thread sees a correct / quiescent database? A standard mutex won't work, since I run the risk of having the main thread grab the mutex before the data gets flushed to the database. This would be a big race condition. What I really want is some sort of mutex that lets the main thread of execution proceed only AFTER the mutex has been grabbed and released once. Does such a thing exist? What's the best way to solve this problem?

• http://localhost/ not working on Windows 7. What's the problem?

  I have a big problem opening http://localhost/ on Windows 7 (beta). I installed this os and everything went great; when I installed Wamp I saw that localhost is not working at all. I just see this error: Failed to Connect Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at localhost. in Mozilla and Explorer. I removed Wamp and after some weeks (that means two weeks from today) I installed NetBeans on Windows 7. I created a test PHP script and when I debug it, I get the same error again. I tried to access it with ip 127.... but still the same. What is the problem? When i installed NetBeans I installed it in port 8080.

  I have a big problem. I've made a simple Google Chrome plugin (based on the old Youtube Video Downloader) but I have some problems with it. The first problem is that it won't pop up a new save window on click, but opens a new page with the video in the default Chrome player. The second is, that when the user clicks right click-save, they won't get the video name but a standardized name. Is there any way to make a file save dialog with a specified file save name?

• What benefits can Java developer have from moving to a *NIX platform?

  Hi everyone, A friend of mine is a Java developer, who's using *NIX for ages. He claims that *NIX is for real Java geeks, whereas WIN is for dummies (and I'm one of them, according to him) and girls. When I ask him to argue his position, and explain, what's so good for Java developer on *NIX, he starts talking about console, wget, curl and grep. But sorry, wget and curl analogues exist for the WIN platform as well. As for the console - I'm using FAR Commander, and have access to the command line when I need. Moreover, even if I decide moving to *NIX, I will certainly use Netbeans or Eclipse on it, so there will be no big difference. Guys, who use Java on *NIX, could you please give me some real killer examples, when *NIX (any util or technique) dramatically increases Java development productivity (in the way the hints are given in "The Pragmatic Programmer"), or, which is also important, gives more fun from the process. I know how to get records out of the DB and display them, but I now have to get results from two tables and display them. I pass $data to the view, it works fine for $data['prop'] but I can't get the rest. $data['prop'] = $this->ManageProperty_model->get_property_details($p_id); $data['img'] = $this->ManageProperty_model->get_property_images($p_id); $this->load->model('ManageBranch_model'); $data['branch'] = $this->ManageBranch_model->get_branch_details($p_id); I usually echo out results like so: <?php foreach ($prop as $p) : ?> <?php echo $p->ID; ?> <?php endforeach; ?> Even if there is only 1 row being returned as I am not sure of another way.do I need a foreach for img and branch?

Say, <div id="parent"> <div id="child1"> </div> <div id="child1"> </div> <div id="child2"> </div> <div id="child1"> </div> <div id="child1"> </div> </div> If I'm currently at the last 'child1', how dow I get to the top most child1 with prev()? For me it breaks when it reaches 'child2'.
