• Java Non-Blocking HTTP Server

  I have written an application using embedded Jetty that makes network calls to other services. I presume that the serving threads are idle whilst waiting for the network calls to complete. Is there any way to have a worker thread that switches between requests to perform work that can be done at the current time and then when the network calls return also handle that? A request would be returned when all work has been completed for it. I know this is a common paradigm, and I have used it for non-blocking TCP networking, but I'm unsure as to how to achieve this on a Java HTTP server whilst also waiting on external results. Any links or explanations are appreciated. Thanks

  I don't have a lot of experience with Jboss AOP and I'm just curious if it's possible to replace all calls like Field f = foo.class.getDeclaredField("bar"); f.set(object, value); with something like Field f = foo.class.getDeclaredField("bar"); FieldSetCaller.invoke(f, object, value); using Jboss AOP. FieldSetCaller is my own class. I need to replace all Field.set calls on the fly, without recompiling the code. Some third -party code I even cannot recompile because I don't have the source. I can achieve this using java asm framework and I'm wandering if Jboss AOP can do it as well. Just for information - my code is running on Jboss server 4.3.0

• Java how to copy part of a file

  I have to read a file and depending of the content of the last lines, I have to copy most of its content into a new file. Unfortunately I didn't found a way to copy first n lines or chars of a file in java. The only way I found, is copying the file using nio FileChannels where I can specifiy the length in bytes. However, therefore I would need to know how many bytes the stuff I read needed in the source-file. Does anyone know a solution for one of these problems?

  I'm developing a medium Java app, and i'm facing a small problem due to my lack of experience. I've a custom DAO, which gets "Article" objects from the Database. I've the Article class, and the DAO has a method called getArticle(int id), this method returns an Article. The Article has a Category object, and I'm using lazy loading. So, when I request for an article's category (Article a = new Article(); a.getCategory();) the Article class gets the Category from the DAO and then returns it. I'm now thinking to cache it, so when I request multiple times to an article's category, the database is only queried one time. My question is: where should I put that cache? I can put it on the Article class (in the DTO), or I can put it on the DAO class. What do you say?

Is it implemented by JVM or does it reside in any Java API class file ?

Does any one know why you would do this? What is a possible use-case / benefit of doing this? • Java Program Design Layout Recommendations?

  I've learned enough to begin writing programs from scratch, but I'm running into the problem of not knowing how to design the layout and implementation of a program. To be more precise, I'm having difficulty finding a good way to come up with an action plan before I dive in to the programming part. I really want to know what classes, methods, and objects I would need beforehand instead of just adding them along the way. My intuition is leading me to using some kind of charting software that gives a hierarchal view of all the classes and methods. I've been using OmniGraffle Pro and while it does seem to work somewhat, I'm still having trouble planning out the program in its entirety. How should I approach this problem? What softwares out there are available to help with this problem? Any good reads out there on this issue? Thanks so much! Edit: Oh yeah, I'm using Eclipse and I code mainly in Java right now.

String str1="my"; String str2="string"; String concat1=str1+str2; concat1.intern(); System.out.println(concat1=="mystring"); The expression concat1=="mystring" returns true because concat1 has been interned. If the given string mystring is changed to string as shown in the following snippet. String str11="str"; String str12="ing"; String concat11=str11+str12; concat11.intern(); System.out.println(concat11=="string"); The comparison expression concat11=="string" returns false. The string held by concat11 doesn't seem to be interned. What am I overlooking here? I have tested on Java 7, update 11.

  I am developing a simple platform game using Java using BlueJ as the IDE. Right now I have player/enemy sprites, platforms and other items in the game drawn using polygons and simple shapes. Eventually I hope to replace them with actual images. For now I would like to know what is the simplest solution to setting an image (either URL or from local source) as the 'background' of my game window/canvas? I would appreciate it if it isn't something long or complex as my programming skills aren't very good and I want to keep my program as simple as possible. • How to implement file transfer with Java sockets?

  Hello, I am working on a chat implementation with Java sockets. I have focused on few functionalities, like authentication, one person chat and a group chat. I was thinking about adding file transfer functionality, and I wonder what's the good practice about this. Should I have separate socket on the server with different port listening just for file transfers? Right now input and output streams that I get from server socket are binded to Scanner and PrintWriter objects respectively, so I find it hard to use that for file transfer. Any patterns you guys could recommend or give me good recommendations are very appreciated. Thanks, ZeKoU

  What is the best way to deal with accessing/modifying tables in a database? I have read about the Data Access Object approach, but none of the resources I have found so far indicate a clear implementation of it. So assume you have a database with a table called accounts that has columns id, name, password and email. How would you properly access it within Java?   hi, I am kind of stuck on this one. im not a java or oracle guru, so please give detailed answers :) i've a web-service that inserts something into DB. the web-service is hosted on axis. the db is oracle with following properties: NLS_LANGUAGE AMERICAN NLS_TERRITORY AMERICA NLS_CHARACTERSET ZHS16GBK the web-service is hosted on windows server 2008, english version but i have changed the locale of the system to chinese now the data after insert has encoding problem and shows strange characters like ????,exxk?? the jws file has GBK encoding. and the data that is inserted into the DB is hard-coded in the file [we are not reading it from REQUEST]

An XML file may contain content of several schemas, like this: <outer xmlns="my.outer.namespace" xmlns:x="my.third.namespace"> <foo>hello</foo> <inner xmlns="my.inner.namespace"> <bar x:id="bar">world</bar> </inner> </outer> Given a namespace the corresponding xsd file can be provided, but the used namespaces are unknown before parsing. If a schema defines default values for attributes, I also want to know that somehow. I was able to validate a file if the schemas are known, I was able to parse a file without validation and I implemented a LSResourceResolver. However, I can't get all of it working together. How do I have to set up my (SAX) parser?

• How to implement image map type interface for a game board in Java 6

  My group project at school is to implement a style of monopoly in which students can buy courses and land on various squares and move around the board. This is not a regular square board so we were wondering if anyone had any ideas on how we would implement an image map or something like it to create many clickable regions not in a perfect square.   According to Oracle's site, the class Color has a constructor that accepts a single int value which represents an RGB value. http://download.oracle.com/javase/1.4.2/docs/api/java/awt/Color.html#Color(int) An RGB color is actually three different numbers ranging from 0-255. So combining them together to make one int would look like this: White 255,255,255 White 255255255 Right? So I pass this to the constructor and get a vibrant teal color. What am I doing wrong? What haven't I understood?

  I'm stuck with this pretty silly thing; I got a textfile like this; Hello::140.0::Bye I split it into a string array using; LS = line.split("::"); Then I try to convert the array values containing the number to a double, like this; Double number = Double.parseDouble(LS[1]); But I get the following error message; Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: 1 Does anyone have any idea why this doesn't work?

  Hi, I had a look in the reference doc, and Spring seems to have pretty good support for sending mail. However, I need to login to a mail account, read the messages, and download any attachments. Is downloading mail attachments supported by the Spring mail API? I know you can do this with the Java Mail API, but in the past I've found that very verbose and unpleasant to work with. EDIT: I've received several replies pointing towards tutorials that describe how to send mail with attachments, but what I'm asking about is how to read attachments from received mail. Cheers, Don

  Hi in a java application i need to run an external console application. With the window's ones everything is OK: try { System.out.println("Running..."); Runtime.getRuntime().exec("notepad.exe"); System.out.println("End."); } catch(Exception e) { System.out.println(e.getMessage()); } launches notepad successfully. But if I put "D:\MyProg.exe" or ".bat" or even "cmd.exe" (which is it PATH as notepad is) it does not work. Without any exeptions. Just: Running... End. Can somebody help? Thanx.

• Connecting a PHP front-end to a back-end java service

  I am currently using various back-end services and I want to use PHP to simply query these services and perform the final page construction. These services could be coded in any number of programming langauges such as Erlang, Java, Python etc. However I am unsure of the best way to actually interface the back-end services with the web app. Requests to these services would be both synchronous and asynchronous.   Yesterday, I was designing a Java class which I wanted to be initalized with Lists of various generic types: TheClass(List<String> list) { ... } TheClass(List<OtherType> list) { ... } This will not compile, as the constructors have the same erasure. I just went with factory methods differentiated by their names instead: public static TheClass createWithStrings(List<String> list) public static TheClass createWithOtherTypes(List<OtherType> list) This is less than optimal, as there isn't a single obvious location where all the different options for creating instances are available. I tried to search for better design ideas, but found surprisingly few results. What other patterns exist for designing around this problem?

• Java Security filter together with thickbox pop-ups

  Hi, I have a java application that uses a security filter to protect certain resources. If there is no user logged on, it will keep in session the request path and redirect to a logon page. After a successful logon, user is redirected to the original requested page. I have now added some thickbox (ajax bases pop-up) popups to the application. Unfortunately, when I get now a popup that is "secure" the filter redirects to a logon page (which is not a popup) and makes the whole application messy. Anyone with ideas on how to solve this?
