  When I sent a proposal for session "Managing and Troubleshooting MySQL for Oracle DBAs" to MySQL Connect conference org committee it had not any mention of Oracle in its name, but later I was asked to provide more details for former Oracle DBAs who want to use MySQL. I was fast and I said "yes".So my original aim to teach people to troubleshoot MySQL changed to teaching of how different is MySQL from Oracle in troubleshooting aspects. Although both RDBMs have very much in common they are definitely very different. So what I am going to speak about this time is nuances of how MySQL stores data, how it manages locks, why its high availability solutions: MySQL Cluster and Replication have same names as Oracle's, but work differently and more. And, of course, I will tell how to troubleshoot it all.

• Dash empy and blank Software Center

  I've Ubuntu 12.10.1 LTS x62 fresh of installation... My dash is empty, search doesn't work and applications list is empty. If I run the Ubuntu Software Center it freeze in a blank screen. • Moving from a traditional in memory Java session to persistent storage sessions

  We have decided to take the plunge and move from using a typical java session provider in Tomcat/Jetty/etc to persisting everything to a central datastore. We are looking at using MongoDB for this. A few options come to mind... http://wiki.eclipse.org/Jetty/Tutorial/MongoDB_Session_Clustering This is nice because it will "auto-magically" persist our session to a Mongo installation. I am concerned however that we will not have fine grained control of what is happening. https://github.com/mattinsler/com.lowereast.guiceymongo/ GuiceMongo is interesting as it integrates with Guice. Perhaps we could persist everything via this ORM. Has anybody had to deal with this kind of move? It seems that moving from in memory to persistent session storage has a lot of gotchas.

I have connected my ipod touch 32gb in my ubuntu 10.10 os.It's connected on os and shows in desktop. but it's not showing as a device in Rhythmbox music player. and also I can't open directly like folder or drive or usb device. when I try to open it show this Error: Could not display "gphoto2://[usb:001,003]/". • UI font has rendering glitches in GNOME Shell

  I don't really know how to describe this problem in English. A picture can say more words - look at the tabs at the top of the linked image. The current font settings are shown as well. I don't know what basic info I should provide so if something missing, please tell me. Ubuntu 12.04 GNOME Shell 3.4.1 I know, a reboot can make everything normal but I'm looking for a more permanent solution that can fix this problem (or bug). • HTML Tidy for NetBeans IDE 7.4

  The NetBeans HTML5 editor is pretty amazing, working on an extensive screencast on that right now, to be published soon. One thing missing is HTML Tidy integration, until now: As you can see, in this particular file, HTML Tidy finds 6 times more problems (OK, some of them maybe false negatives) than the standard NetBeans HTML hint infrastructure does. You can also run the scanner across the whole project or all projects. Only HTML files will be scanned by HTML Tidy (via JTidy) and you can click on items in the window above to jump to the line. Future enhancements will include error annotations and hint integration, some of which has already been addressed in this blog over the years. • Does the .biz internet top-level domain deserve to be taken seriously?

  .com is the most preferable TLD most of the time, so many people choosing domain names have to pick between desiredname.something_else or totallydifferent.com. From wikipedia: The biz TLD was created to relieve some of the demand for domain names in the com top-level domain, and to provide an alternative for businesses whose preferred domain name in com had already been registered by another party. .org at least implies an organization, whereas .com is the most generic 'commercial'. But .biz seems like a total duplicate that doesn't seem in widespread use <pun>and deserves to be closed. </pun>. Does .biz have any advantages over .com? Are .biz domains worth registering if .com is already taken?

• How to add metadata to images using Shotwell

  Using Ubuntu 13.04. I have a very basic question about Shotwell. I would like to add a desciption to my photos. I right-click on an image in Nautilus. Choose Open with Shotwell photo viewer. I can't find a way to edit any metadata for the photo. As an example, Shotwell help: http://yorba.org/shotwell/help/view-view.html ... says that I should be able to select Photos Edit title, but I don't have this option in my menu. (I have 'Photo' but not 'Photos'). F2 does nothing for me. My menu options are: File, Edit, View, Photo, Help. I'm missing something very basic here. Grateful for your help!

• I can't login to facebook from any browser

  I'm Using UBUNTU 12.04. I'm having problems with Facebook. It really hard to login. Takes like 3 or 5 min. At first I thought it was a flash problem but then I realized it could be some proxy's conf file. Other sites doesn't have problems. Yesterday I tried Tor-browser-bundle and I installed privoxy using this rules http://www.neilvandyke.org/privoxy-rules/ . Today I removed privoxy and the conf file with the Ubuntu software center and ubuntu-tweak. I don't really find the problem and my windows pc does not have any problem with the same modem. I don't have an ISP'S PROXY it just a direct Internet connection using automatic DHCP. Maybe I am missing something else. But I want to be sure so, I'm asking. PD: Sorry for my English I'm Argentinian.

• Dual boot: Linux Grub loader does not show windows

  my computer previously only had windows installed on it. Recently I decided to try Linux and opted for a dual boot so I installed Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon 64-bit on a separate hard drive within my computer. After installation my computer would directly boot to Linux upon start up and did not even show a grub screen. Using the boot-repair I was finally able to make the Grub loader show a boot list upon start up, but the Windows partition is not there. • UndoRedo on Nodes (Part 2)

  After the recording of the latest API Design Tip for the upcoming NetBeans Podcast, Jaroslav Tulach helped me with the problem I blogged about yesterday. First he expressed surprise at seeing Undo/Redo work on Nodes, which was never the intention, i.e., that feature was always intended for documents, e.g., the Java editor. However, he then showed me where to find the Properties window in the NetBeans sources, where it is org.netbeans.core.windows.view.ui.NbSheet. It turns out that the Properties window does not have an activated node and hence the Node that implements UndoRedo.Manager is never put in the Lookup. Once we added, on line 303, "this.setActivatedNodes(nodes);", everything worked as expected, i.e., the Undo/Redo actions are now enabled, even when the Properties window is selected: Maybe it means I should file an issue to get that line added to NbSheet?

• Lock screen elements frozen on desktop

  I have finally made the switch from Windows to Ubuntu and now have to ask the first question because search did not help me this time. (Please help me in a newb-friendly way) The problem is easily described: The elements shown in the lockscreen on boot (ubuntu logo in the middle and watermark in bottom left corner) stay there even when I'm entering desktop. How can I remove them again? They haven't been there in the first place, but after updating Ubuntu with Update Center, the problem occured. • Are there any actual examples of profitable programmer's "worker's cooperatives"?

The wikipedia link above is an overview of the concept. The short form explanation is that a co-op is a worker-owned business. Also there is the notion that every worker owns shares in the business. I am interested in knowing whether an example of a "programmer's/IT co-op" even exists. Note: I am not talking about nor asking about a government-funded incubator nor any other socialized, state supported group. I also don't mean "co-working", which is renting an office with other self employed people doing their own thing. I mean a going, profitable IT business operating in a competitive environment that is worker-owned and run.

• Can I use my VirtualBox 3.* VMs with VirtualBox 4.0? If so, how come the repository doesn't have it?

  I had the following repository for virtualbox in my /etc/apt/sources.list: deb ttp://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian maverick non-free Then I found out there was a new version when I opened it today (the program prompted me with a window to manually download it from Oracle's site). Then I tried sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade and got nothing. Here you have a way to add virtualbox-4.0 to your apt-get, but the problem is that it isn't updating, meaning I would have the two installed. I'm also worried if I'll have to do something like that each time it updates since that would defeat the point of apt-get. I've been using virtualbox with the apt-get update for more than a year now and this is the first time it has happened, so I was wondering if there would be a way to just update my current installation.

  I am in the early stages of creating an open source C# library that would allow developers to drop in the open SRD (http://www.d20srd.org/) into an existing project. Abstracted it is a complex set of tightly coupled business rules. Having previously worked on an adaptive object model project for health care risk management I began with that pattern in mind. Due to the high coupling of rules it is becoming apparent that the project may require some kind of scripting. Have started researching DSL implementation I am now considering scraping the adaptive object model for a domain specific language. I have not work with domain specific languages so my question is it reasonable to assume a domain specific language can be used to representing the open SRD?

• Is there a ppa or repository where we can update LibreOffice to version 3.6?

  On http://www.libreoffice.org/download/ there is only RPM version - when great majority of Desktop Linux users are using systems based on APT... ppa:libreoffice/ppa seems to be very outdated with version 3.5 It's frustating to see several fixes on Windows version and Ubuntu versions so outdated... People generally reply as: we don't update due to security/stability reasons, etc example 1 example 2 why don't you compile yourself ? For those easy answers, I generally reply: let me decide which version to use at my own risk. I just want to try a newer version and I trust on LibreOffice devs. I understand that update a core lib is very dangerous but Libreoffice is an user application and it don't just break the whole system. Why don't I compile ? Because I am a regular user and don't have time to learn it. I would love to have this time but unfortunately, I don't have. Red Hat/Fedora guys have the same concerns but they update their LibreOffices...

• Ubuntu One slow download sync speed

  I am having problems syncing my Ubuntu One files with my Ubuntu 12.04 fresh installation. Everything went well during the setup phase. Now, I am trying to sync back in my folders in my U1 account and the transfer speed is extremely slow. I am averaging a 15kb/s transfer speed. I tried uninstalling ubuntuone-client and reinstalling it. It did not fixed the problem. Right now U1 is stuck downloading a 50mb file. It is taking forever. Any ideas?   I'm behind NAT, so I can't access pool.ntp.org or Ubuntu's own time servers directly, and I'd like to change the time servers for my system. When googling, I find references to missing manpages like ntpd.conf(5) and ntpd(8), to a missing GUI for setting the time servers, and to a cron script (/etc/cron.daily/ntpdate) that doesn't seem to exist on my system. I've also found a reference to there being changes to ntpd.conf, so I'm hesitant to just create that file in /etc. How is one supposed to change the time servers in 11.10?

  I know that some some text editors have problems to show long lines https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=172099 . What is the best way to fix the bug or are they equally well? Modify the GTK+ source code and add a support for long lines. Modify the text editor source code such that it does not use GTK+ if it meets a long line. Split the long lines into part (maybe by cut on the Bash ) I'm just a junior programmer so I don't know what people does when they meet a bug that is on the library they use.

  I am searching for any good site that teaches C++, that can explain most to all things about it(general) and has a decent active community. About Me: I am new to programming(knows nothing of it, so please bare with me), I have only learned(to a very basic form) LUA scripting Language, so yes I am your complete newbie. I got interested in programming, from scripting in LUA, so you can say it was my small stepping stone, One would basically take a course in college, but not everyone is well funded for that and I can't buy books for the same said reason(yes I'm somewhat poor, only money for essentials and bills), I'm not trying to get sympathy, just stating my conditions. and Please, something in between the lines of 'Programming for Dummies'(I'm not the brightest crayon in the box), I know this will not be easy, but your help will be most appreciated. I would learn for either Windows and/or Linux/Unix. I use both. Site(s) I know: Cplusplus.org(quite inactive and tutorials are a little for the programming savvy.

• Why hamachi time-outs after 5 minutes or so?

  I installed hamachi and hamachi-gui on my girlfriend's pc and on my girlfriend's netbook. After 5 minutes or so (even if I keep using it during that time) it loses the connection, I mean I have to 'go offline' and then 'go online' again for it to see my ip again. If I don't and I ping my IP, it says 'Host unreachable'. If I connect with my Mac from the office the problem doesn't exist, so I wouldn't say it is a problem of my hamachi (server) installation, I'm tempted to say it is a problem of my girlfriend's connection, since it happens from her home, and we haven't tried yet to connect from another home with her setup.
