• Android: heavy traffic on server causes app to force close

  I have developed an app to communicate with my own server and published it. However, sometimes the app force closes. I know there is no bug in the code because the app works properly most of the time, but sometimes it is waiting for an answer from the server forever. I think this is due to the fact that so many people are using the app, and the app refreshes every 1 second or so, so this heavy traffic causes the server to take a large amount of time to respond. So how do you take care of such a use case? should I have a use case where if the server does not respond after some time you just stop the app and throw a message saying that the server is not responding or something like that?

• Is it possible to disable the iPhone's automatic hyperlinks?

  We send out a notification email whenever we have "phishing" emails reported to us. In these emails, we include a copy-paste of the text inside the original phishing email as a sample of what is reported to us. Our code strips all hyperlinks out of the email via PHP, but still includes (in plain text) the link. When users receive this email in their client (Thunderbird, Outlook, Horde/IMP, etc), the hyperlink is removed. However, the iPhone likes to take web addresses in plain text and automatically turn them into hyperlinks. Is there any possible way to stop this action from happening via a HTML tag or by using PHP to replace certain parts of the hyperlink?

But when you drop down the tab to search: This Site: "blog site name" you get the following reply: No results matching your search were found. Check your spelling. • Unexpected error 0x8ffe2740 occurred in IIS

  I have installed IIS in my system (WINDOWS-XP). While i am seeing IIS window, the Default web site is in stop mode. when i am ready to start IIS. It shows "Unexpected error 0x8ffe2740 occurred" Finally, I discovered that its caused by Skype. It listens to port 80 for incoming call. Now, most of the time IIS starts before Skype starts. So IIS works but if you restart IIS or try to start IIS after Skype is started then you will get this error message. For this, I changed my Skype settings Skype File-> Options -> Connection Uncheck Use Port 80 as an alternative for incoming connections. But even though i am unable to start my IIS. Please help me some one.. Thanks.

  Hi all, This is may not be a true programming question but deals with geolocation Api, hence hoping StackOverflow is the right place for this. I'm calling the navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition at every 3 seconds interval. After 10-15 tries the responses stop. So i'm wondering is there a limit on the number of calls being made, Or is it because i'm testing it with a desktop and hence instead of giving back the same response each time the API is waiting for a change of location. I have a query: var UserList = this.repository.GetUsers(); return Json(UserList, JsonRequestBehavior.AllowGet); This was generating an error: "A circular reference was detected while serializing an object of type" This prompted this code which worked fine in L2S: var UserList = this.repository.GetUsers(); foreach (User u in UserList){ u.Subscriptions = null; } return Json(UserList, JsonRequestBehavior.AllowGet); How can i stop EF from looking into the Subscriptions table, i just want the Userlist, none of the related properties and the above example does not seem to work for this. • PHP connection_aborted doesn't work with nginx?

  I can't seem to get the function connection_aborted to work with nginx. The code I used to test is as follow: <?php ignore_user_abort(true); ob_implicit_flush(); $i = 0; while (!connection_aborted()) { echo $i; $i++; sleep(1); } file_put_contents('test',$i); In Apache, it works correctly, although it delays a little. i.e. When I press stop button on browser when "3", the 'test' file shows "8". That is an acceptable margin, but on nginx, it doesn't seem to output anything to the 'test' file.

• How can I receive messages using over http without MSMQ

  I need a reliable messaging framework that runs over http/https (due to client security requirements) and that doesn't use MSMQ (because some clients will use Windows XP Home). The clients only need to be able to receive messages, not send them. We already have a message queue on the server for each user, and the receivers have been getting messages by connecting to an HttpHandler on the server and getting a Stream from WebResponse.GetResponseStream() We keep this stream open, and pull messages off of it using Stream.Read(). This MOSTLY works, but Stream.Read() is a blocking call, and we can't reliably interrupt it. We need to be able to stop and start the receiver without losing messages, but the old stream often hangs around, even after we call Thread.Abort on its thread. Any suggestions?

  Hi, my question referenced to my friend. I am trying to use jquery to show flash videos(swf) like a showcase and this is what I am trying to do: Show a video by default and then have "" below that so when an user click on prev or next, it will show the next one and so on. When a video is clicked after making the selection it can either open the video on top of it in a bigger size Or play the video once right there once they click the play button. I have seen examples for images and I tried those but it did not work with flash files. Please let me know if anyone can guide me. I prefer using jquery as there are applications on the site that uses jquery. Also, I just remembered one thing, how to stop the video if they navigate to the next one. This makes me think if its a good idea to do the gallery or showcase for flash videos. Please clarify my questions. thanks

• Fastest way to move records from a oracle DB into MS sql server after processing

  Hi.. Ok this is the scenario...I have a table in Oracle that acts like a queue... A VB.net program reads the queue and calls a stored proc in MS SQL Server that processes and then inserts the message into another SQL server table and then deletes the record from the oracle table. We use a datareader to read the records from Oracle and then call the stored proc for each of the records. The program seems to be a little slow. The stored procedure itself isnt slow. The SP by itself when called in a loop can process about 2000 records in 20 seconds. BUt when called from the .Net program, the execution time is about 5 records per second. I have seen that most of the time consumed is in calling the stored procedure and waiting for it to return. Is there a better way of doing this? • Background thread in .NET

  When the user saves some data, I want to spin off a background thread to update my indexes and do some other random stuff. Even if there is an error in this indexing the user can't do anything about it, so there is no point in forcing the main thread to wait until the background thread finishes. I'm doing this from a ASP.NET process, so I think I should be able to do this (as the main thread exiting won't kill the process). When I set a breakpoint in the background thread's method though, the main thread also appears to stop. Is this just an artifact of visual studio's debugger, or is the main thread really not going to return until the background thread stops?

• MVC Serve audio files while preventing direct linking using HttpResponseBase

  I need to be able to serve audio files to an mvc app while preventing direct access. Ideally the page would render with a player control so the user can start/stop the audio linked to the database record (audio files are in a folder not the db). I have a controller action like this: Response.Clear(); Response.ContentType = "audio/wav"; Response.TransmitFile(audioFilename); Response.End(); return Response; and the view uses the RenderAction method <% Html.RenderAction("ServeAudioFile"); %> this works but it won't display inline on the existing view, it opens a new page with just the media control. Am I totally barking up the wrong tree or is there a way to embed the response in the existing view? works exactly as I would like but I can't control access to the file.

  My app offers the user the opportunity to put an event in his native calendar. For that, I refer to an online webcal:// URL. Since the underlying .ics file is quite big (containing quite a few events), it sometimes (also depending on the network performance)takes a while before the "Do you want to subscribe"-dialog sequence kicks in. I would like to give the user some feedback in the mean time, like a spinner, or a changing graphic, for him to know that something is going to happen. Question: how does my app know, that the "Do you want to subscribe"-dialog has been shown, and that the user has chosen either a Cancel of OK button in that dialog, so I can stop the spinner?

  Hi all, I am starting to re-write my whole silverlight business application in the MVVM pattern; My first stop-point is this: I have a page (View1) with corresponding ViewModel1 (with a property 'IEnumerable AllData'); Now, within this View, I want to have i.e. a tree-view control, in which one node will be populated with another View2; My question is: 1. How to do it? - I can't loop through the AllData property since it is asynchronously loaded... - thus I don't know the number of View2s' to insert - I don't know how to do it from ViewModel1 :( Will I need ViewModel2 with property 'MyDataEntity CurrentData'? or I can bind to AllData property from ViewModel1 Can you help me out? • UItableviewcell makes label's background clear when highlighted

  I have a UIlabel on a UItabelViewCell, which I've created programmatically (ie not a nib or a subclass). When the cell is highlighted (goes blue) it makes all the background colors of the UILabels turn clear I have 2 UILabels where I don't want this to be the case. Currently I m using UIImageViews behind the UILabel's to make it look like the background color doesn't change. But this seems an inefficient way to do it. How can i stop certain UILabel's background color changing when the TableViewCell is highlighted?

  Hi I'm quite new to SSIS - using 2008 version. I have a job that uses a few data flow tasks. On the third one I'm getting a primary key violation on the last row that it needs to insert, but only sometimes! I'd like to ignore this problem for now and let the job continue. I have set the MaximumErrorCount property to 10 for the DataFlowTaks, the SequenceContainer and for the Package but still taks fails and this causes the package to stop. Could anyone please advise how I can get the package to ignore the error? Thanks Rob.

• Capistrano update causes C: to be placed in the current directory (cygwin)

  When I run cap deploy:update in a directory on my local machine (via cygwin), "C:" magically appears in the directory. Sure enough, I can cd to it and it's my windows C: drive. Now I'm afraid to delete it, but I definitely don't want it in this directory (a rails project under /home/username/blah/blah). • IF/ELSE makes stored procedure not return a result set

  I have a stored procedure that needs to return something from one of two databases: IF @x = 1 SELECT @y FROM Table_A ELSE IF @x = 2 SELECT @y FROM Table_B Either SELECT alone will return what I want, but adding the IF/ELSE makes it stop returning anything. I tried: IF @x = 1 RETURN SELECT @y FROM Table_A ELSE IF @x = 2 RETURN SELECT @y FROM Table_B But that causes a syntax error. The two options I see are both horrible: Do a UNION and make sure that only one side has any results: SELECT @y FROM Table_A WHERE @x = 1 UNION SELECT @y FROM Table_B WHERE @x = 2 Create a temporary table to store one row in, and create and delete it every time I run this procedure (lots). Neither solution is elegant, and I assume they would both be horrible for performance (unless MS SQL is smart enough not to search the tables when the WHERE class is always false). Is there anything else I can do? Is option 1 not as bad as I think?
