• Unique number generation with Java Server Faces

  I am developing an application for a medical channelling centre where multiple users reserve bookings for doctors with JSF and JPA. A sequence number is unique to the Doctor, Date and Session. I tried to get a unique sequence number from counting the previous bookings and add one, but if two requests comes at the same time, two bookings get the same number causing trouble to functionality. How can I get unique number in this case? Can I use an application wide bean to generate it? (I thought it is not practicle to get the unique number from the database sequence number as there are several doctors, sessions and daily they have to have different booking number.)

• Best place to store large amounts of session data

  I'm building an application that needs to store and re-use large amounts of data per session. So for example, the user selects a large list of list items (say 2000 or significantly more) which have a numeric value as their key then they save that selection and go off to another page, do something else and then come back to the original page and need to load their selections into that page. What is the quickest and most efficient way of storing and reusing that data? In a text file saved with the session id? In a temp db table? In the session data itself (db sessions so size isn't a limit) using a serialised string or using gzcompress or gzencode? Any advice or insight would be great! Thank you!!!!

  suppose, I use Tomcat as a web container. Is it true that once all the servlets found in a web-app/WEBAPPNAME are init(IALIZED) then every change of a Servlet's property will be seen to every session. So session 1 changes a property userName of a Servlet1 from "user1" to "user2" session 1 is closed. session 2 starts. It will see "user2" as the only value of Servlet1.userName property?? Any change of a Servlet's field will be seen to all subsequent sessions? Are servlets singletons, aren't they?

• How to? - part of the site over ssl, other part not

  What is common practice for coding web applications where part of the site has to be secured (e.g. checkout section) and part not necessarily, lets say homepage. As far as I know sharing sessions in between http and https parts of the site is not easily possible (or is it?). What would be common approach if I wanted to display on http page like homepage, shopping cart data (items) that users ordered on https pages? How those two parts of the site would communicate if necessary? Also isn't it security flaw in popular shopping carts as it seems that many of these have only checkout pages secured (ssl) and the rest not? I'm using php if it makes any difference.

  I have a collection of states, that I want to cache for the life of the application, preferably after it is called for the first time. I'm using EclipseLink as my persistence provider. What is the correct way to configure this query so that it is only ever read once from the database, preferably across all sessions?   In my app, I have an external monitor that pings the app ever few minutes and measures its uptime / response time Every time the monitor connects, a new server session is created, so when I look at the number of sessions, it's always a minimum of 15, even during times where there are no actual users. I tried to address this with putting the session creation code into a filter, but that doesn't seem to do it - I guess session automatically gets created when the user opens the first page? all() { before = { if (actionName=='signin') { def session = request.session //creates session if not exists } } } I can configure the monitor to pass in a paramter if I need to (i.e. http://servername.com/?nosession, but not sure how to make sure the session isn't created.

  I have been reading about using Spring with Hibernate and I am really confused about session management. Hopefully someone can clear a few things up for me, First of all I have no idea how sessions are managed when using HibernateTemplate. Is a session opened and closed when you call a method Eg Save() on the template? When you use the find() method, are detached objects returned? I have read the Spring section on transactions but it mostly talks about handling exceptions. I was hoping to find some way of binding a hibernate session to a Spring transaction so that I can commit changes to hibernate objects when the transaction finishes. Is there a way to achieve this?

  I have a table named ChatSessions where I keep track of active users in the chatroom. I need to prune expired user sessions from the table every 10 minutes. Using pure php-mysql is plain simple but I'm totally clueless how to convert this into ActiveRecord in CodeIgniter. The plain SQL query is below: SELECT * FROM `ChatSessions` WHERE `SessionExpires` < DATE_SUB( NOW( ) , INTERVAL 10 MINUTE ) Can anybody tell me what is the equivalent code in CodeIgniter using ActiveRecord? • Session sometimes timesout too quick

  I am noticing session timeouts on my asp.net mvc web app randomly without browser being incative for for more than few minutes. My understanding is the default timeout should be 20mins. But sometimes I get a timeout in couple minutes or even less than that. For example after browsing on the site for a while I might get a session timeout when i refresh a page very soon after I enter the page. This is very random but I have seen this happen quite a few times now and I am not sure how I can trace this to see why I loose sessions every once in a while whithout browser being inactive long. I checked my web.config an no timeout value is defined there so I assume it should be 20mins. Hard to debug as this does not occur regularly..

It will be initialized with information in the params hash if the params hash exists. Otherwise, it will check the sessions hash for the information. Finally, it will initialize with defaults if neither params nor session has the data it needs. Now depending on session value I want to set some hidden values, so that it can be picked up from javascript and can do certain operation. But, the problem is I have no idea about how to get/ set values into html controls using asp.net, and also do not know whether this is possible or not. Please note, it is imperative that I need some way to hold some data that can be set using asp.net and can be picked up by javascript.   Hello, So i have a 2 dimensional array that is used over several pages (session) $_SESSION ["Table"][$_SESSION ["count"]] [0] = $filename; $_SESSION ["Table"][$_SESSION ["count"]] [1] = $size; $_SESSION ["Table"][$_SESSION ["count"]] [2] = $floor; $_SESSION ["Table"][$_SESSION ["count"]] [3] = $phone; $_SESSION ["Table"][$_SESSION ["count"]] [4] = $network; $_SESSION ["Table"][$_SESSION ["count"]] [5] = $totalprice; This is used with a form so i can give in multiple input wich gets stored. But my question is how exactly can i calculate the AVERAGE of $total price of all given in results? Meaning for example i have 5 rows so this would mean 5 total prices. How exactly can i acces this value and count everything up / 5? This will happen in a other page so i would like to use sessions for this. /5 simply by count($_Session["table"]) , but really not sure about the other values. Kind Regards.

• Filemaker XSL 20sec Query Latency

  I have an ASP frontend that loads data from a Filemaker database using XSL to perform simple queries. The problem is that the first page load takes 20 seconds +/- 200ms, then the next few page refreshes within a minute of the first request take <200ms, then the cycle starts over again. Each page load makes only 2 XSL queries, and they execute fast after the first page load, so what is causing the delay on the first page load? I have caching turned up with a 100% hit rate, and number of connections at 100. I've tried with XSL database sessions on and off, and session time anywhere from 1 to 60 minutes without any changes. The XSL loads from ASP use a GET request and add a Basic Authorization header to authenticate each time. During fast page requests, the fmserver.exe and fmswpc.exe processes don't even flinch, but during a 20 second holdup I see fmserver jump to 30% CPU and a 3mb I/O read a few seconds into the request, and occasionally fmswpc jump to 60% CPU.

• Horizontal Scaling of Tomcat in Microsoft Azure

  Hey everyone, I am working on this quiet a while, but still no conclustion. I want to do horizontal scaling of Tomcat instances in Microsoft Azure (1,2,3,... Tomcat instances for one service). I read lots of articles about session replication, clustering,... with Tomcat. Since Azure does not support Multicasts, there is no easy way to cluster Tomcat. Also sticky sessions is no options, because Azure does round robin load balancing. Setting up two services - one with Terracotta or Apache mod_jk - and the other with Tomcat instances seems overkill for me (if even doable)... Is this even possible?   We have some problems with users performing a specific action twice, we have a mechanism to ensure that users can't do it but somehow it still happens. Here is how our current mechanism works: Client side: The button will be disabled after 1 click. Server side: We have a key hash in the URL which will be checked against the key stored in SESSIONS, once it matches, the key is deleted. Database side: Once the action is performed, there is a field to be flagged indicating the user has completed the action. However, with all these measures, still there are users able to perform the action twice, are there any more safer methods?

• Session Timeout and page response time

  Hi, I'm load testing an asp.net app. The load test is simulating 500 user doing searchs on the site and browsing the results. I'm observing that the more I reduce the session timeout limit (in web.config) the better the page response time. For exemple, with a timeout at 10 minutes, I got an average response time of 8.35 seconds. With a timout at 3 minutes, the average response time for the same page is 3,98 seconds. The session in stored "InProc". I supposed the memory used by the "no more used but still actives" sessions may be in cause. But, even if there is more memory used when the timeout is at 10, there is still plenty of memory available (about 2.7Gb). Any ideas?

• When does an ASP.NET Website project recompile?

  Where's the info that tells the kinds of changes and files which cause a website project (not web application project) to recompile itself? The reason I'm asking is because we don't want users to lose their sessions. So we want to update the live website with recompile changes in the very wee hours of the morning, but would prefer to make changes during the day to expedite them. My approach: user X have an account at the existing Rails app. With these login data the user X should authenticate on my Rails app. The existing app offers a gem to connect to the API after login.   Can someone please explain the difference between ViewState and Session? More specifically, I'd like to know the best way to keep an object available (continuously setting members through postbacks) throughout the lifecycle of my page. I currently use Sessions to do this, but I'm not sure if it's the best way. For example: SearchObject searchObject; protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { if(!IsPostBack) { searchObject = new SearchObject(); Session["searchObject"] = searchObject; } else { searchObject = (SearchObject)Session["searchObject"]; } } that allows me to use my searchObject anywhere else on my page but it's kind of cumbersome as I have to reset my session var if I change any properties etc. I'm thinking there must be a better way to do this so that .NET doesn't re-instantiate the object each time the page loads, but also puts it in the global scope of the Page class?   Good morning - I'm an intermediate-level developer who wants to build on online data-driven app (CRUD with a few calculations and basic HTML form inputs, nothing fancy) that keeps track of user sessions, and looks "professional" (or at least not "homemade"). I'm looking to development something with the look-and-feel that users get from sites like: http://www.datamasher.org/ http://www.thisweknow.org/ (About page says it was made with Ruby on Rails, which I'm unfamiliar with) (stackoverflow.com) Any pointers on whether I should just go the Miscrosoft route, and develop in ASP.net with WebForms, or if there's a quick qay to do this kind of development (with a WYSIWYG environment) on an open-source platform? I'm willing to learn, if it's somethat I can use to quickly drag/drop, add code, and publish online. Templates would be a plus, too. I apologize is the question seems a bit vague.
