• Evoland: A Video Game About Video Game History

  Browser-based Evoland is, hands down, one of the more clever video game concepts to come across our desk. The game itself is a history of video games–as you play the game the game evolves from a limited 8-bit monochrome adventure into a modern game. You start off unable to do anything but move right and collect a treasure chest. That treasure chest unlocks the left key (keys are configured in a WASD style keypad) which in turn allows you to move around a simple monochromatic forest clearing to unlock the rest of the movement keys. From there you begin unlocking more game features, effectively evolving the game from monochrome to 16 and then 64 bit color and unlocking various game play features. The game itself is short and can be played in about the same time you could watch a video covering the basics of various game changes over the last 30 years but actually playing the game and watching the evolution in progress is far more rewarding. • ubuntu one not syncing

  I am really starting to despair as I have been trying ubuntu one for several months, trying it on several machines, and it has caused me loads of different issues wasting me a lot of time. It is not straight forward to use, it should be a piece of software that runs in background and users should not think about checking all the time if it is really doing it's job. Of course I have been searching around this website and other forums but couldn't find an answer to my situation. Yesterday I had several problems with the client not syncing and using a lot of the machine's RAM, up and CPU. I had to reboot on several occasions and leave the office's PC on overnight in order to sync a few files of not more than a few MB. Today I am experiencing another problem: I have decided to do a test putting a small file in my ubuntu one shared folder. Ubuntu one is not detecting it (now already more than an hour), therefore not uploading it to the server. martin@ubuntu-desktop:~$ u1sdtool --status State: QUEUE_MANAGER connection: With User With Network description: processing the commands pool is_connected: True is_error: False is_online: True queues: IDLE and martin@ubuntu-desktop:~$ u1sdtool --current-transfers Current uploads: 0 Current downloads: 0 I am running Ubuntu 11.04 64 with all recent updates. On my other machine the transfer of files seems to be completely frozen, with around 10 files in the queue but no transfer whatsoever. Another curious issue is on my Ubuntu 10.10 laptop where ubuntu one seems to have completly disappeared from Nautilus context menu, folder/file sync status icons missing. • Rackspace Cloud Servers in Europe?

  We have setup a cloud virtual server at rackspace in the US, but we use it from Europe. I found out I am not quite happy with the response time. Of course I knew that there would be some latency. But I am not sure if it is the overseas latency (ping is 120ms) or also the minimal resources. It is the smallest machine, 256 MB, 10 GB, running a Mediawiki on Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit. The Instance lives in the rackspace ORD1 datacenter. As soon as they have opened their new facilities in the UK we plan moving the incstance there. But we are planing more machines already. The pricing is quite attractive. I don't really want to do some measuring and benchmarking and this stuff, so I am asking just for your opinions and it would be nice to hear what you can tell from your experience. Maybe someone who uses such small instances in the US. And what can we really expect if we upgrade to more resources.

• What is the proper way to Windows 7/Ubuntu 10.10 Dual-Triple Boot Partitioning for Laptop OEM?

  Hi Linux Community, I find my self struggling with the slowness of windows OS once again. It's Time to change with the Ubuntu 10.10 64bit for I like to use a faster Operating System. My Hard Disk laptop has a RECOVERY and HP_TOOLS partition they are both Primary. I Have the System Recovery DVD for Windows 64bit should anything bad happen. Here's the layout I used with windows before: * (C:) Windows 7 system partition NTFS - 284,89GB (Primary,ad Boot,Pagefile,Dump) * HP_TOOLS system partition FAT32 - 99MB (Primary) * (D:) RECOVERY partition NTFS - 12,90GB (Primary) * SYSTEM partition NTFS 199MB (Primary) Here's the layout I wanted to make: * (C:) Windows 7 system partition NTFS - 60GB (Primary) (sda1) * (D:) Windows DATA partition (user files) NTFS - 120GB(Primary)(sda2);wanna share with Linux * Linux root Ext4 - 10GB (Extended)(sda3) (Ubuntu 10.10 64bit) * Linux home Ext3 - 90GB (Extended)(sda4) (Ubuntu 10.10 64bit) * Linux swap swap- RAM size, 3GB (sda5) * Linux root Ext3- 18GB (Extended) (sda6) (OpenSuse or Puppy or kubuntu) Here is my New Ubuntu 10.10 64bit layout in use now: * SYSTEM partition NTFS 199MB (Primary) (sda1) * (C:) Windows 7 system partition NTFS - 90GB (Primary) (sda2) * (D:) Windows 7 RECOVERY partition NTFS - 12,90GB (Primary) (sda3) * Linux system partition EXTENDED - 195,1GB (Logical) * Linux root Ext4- 10GB (Extended) (sda4) * Linux swap swap- RAMx2 size, 6,1GB (sda5) * Linux home Ext3- 179GB (Extended) (sda6) When I installed Ubuntu,I didn't know if I could wipe all previous partitions,because of the RECOVERY partition. So I just made the space for my extended partition with GParted by deleting the HP_TOOLS (Fat32). By doing this I managed somehow to install Ubuntu 64 with Success. And I also made the partitions for the swap or a third Linux OS as Jordan suggested. But I couldn't actually make the partitions for the shared NTFS.(no option!) • Trying to use HUAWEI E173 on Ubuntu 12.04

  I have a HUAWEI E173 usb stick to access the internet. It works normally on windows but I need to use it on my Ubuntu system. I plug it in, and after 25-20 seconds the status light turns green and blinks twice every 3 seconds. I see no changes in my system whatsoever, nothing gets installed, I don't get prompted for my PIN. I tried to create a connection using edit connections. I entered the following parameters: Turkey, Turkcell, My Plan is not listed, Internet. Nothing happens. • Firefox does not print flash content

  I am using Firefox 3.6.15 on a Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit Operating System, Intel Core i7 CPU, 3.33GHz, 10BG RAM, by Hewlett-Packard. Firefox does not print flash content, aka swf objects, nor does it show them in the print preview pane...I want to print out the entire web page with the flash content. I seem to only be able to see flash and html content together in print preview and to print in IE8. I have tried to google this issue, but could not find a solution. I was trying to print preview/print out the following site: http://www.discovertheponds.com/. Flash content will display in print preview and print in IE8, but neither print preview or print in Firefox. I have also updated the Java on my computer to the most recent update, and ran the firefox plug-in checker at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/ . I do run Firebug and Web Developer, but have currently disabled them. Is this problem on my end, meaning some issue with my computer...or is this because of how the website was programmed in HTML/Flash...or is this a bug with Firefox? I am a website designer and am also concerned that others will not be able print sites I develop or have already developed that have flash content from Firefox. I used to think Firefox was better than IE at everything. What happened here? Was it some change in Firefox's version that caused this problem?

  Salve a tutti, possiedo un portatile HP Pavillion dv6 3110 con scheda video dedicata ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 da 1 Giga ed ho installato da poco Ubuntu 11.10 Versione 64 bit. Ho seguito molte guide su internet per installare i driver per la mia scheda video ma nessuna ha dato esito positivo. Nella finestra "driver aggiuntivi" sono riuscito ad installare i "Driver grafici fglrx proprietari ATI/AMD" ma dopo il riavvio non riesco ad utilizzare correttamente la scheda video. Mentre i "Driver grafici fglrx proprietari ATI/AMD (aggiornamenti post-release)" non me li fa proprio installare segnalando un errore che riporto di seguito "L'installazione di questo driver non è riuscita.Consultare i file di registro per maggiori informazioni: /var/log/jockey.log". Ho pensato allora di scaricare direttamente dal sito di AMD gli ultimi driver rilasciati attraverso il pacchetto "amd-driver-installer-12-3-x86.x86_64.run", l'ho lanciato, ho seguito il wizard di installazione, l'installazione viene completata, digito "sudo aticonfig --initial" per la configurazione iniziale, ma al riavvio del pc appaiono soltanto scritte su schermo nero con una serie di "OK" e qualche "FAIL". Ho provato questa procedura anche per le versioni precedenti dei driver, ma il risultato è sempre lo stesso. Sono disperato. Riuscirò mai ad utilizzare la mia scheda video?   I upgraded Ubuntu to 12.04 from 11.10. The printer works, but the scanner doesn't now. In 11.10 I had to install a special driver from Brother. The printer's model is Brother MFC-290C. The computer is a Toshiba Satellite. How can I get the scanner working? Update: I have a 64-bit installation on the Toshiba Satellite. Thank you for your instructions, Chad--24216. I followed each step: 1 through 5. I also updated the Brother Linux scanner S-KEY tool. • 10 Reasons Why Java is the Top Embedded Platform

  With the release of Oracle ME Embedded 3.2 and Oracle Java Embedded Suite, Java is now ready to fully move into the embedded developer space, what many have called the "Internet of Things". Here are 10 reasons why Java is the top embedded platform. 1. Decouples software development from hardware development cycle Development is typically split between both hardware and software in a traditional design flow . This leads to complicated co-design and requires prototype hardware to be built. This parallel and interdependent hardware / software design process typically leads to two or more re-development phases. With Embedded Java, all specific work is carried out in software, with the (processor) hardware implementation fully decoupled. This with eliminate or at least reduces the need for re-spins of software or hardware and the original development efforts can be carried forward directly into product development and validation. 2. Development and testing can be done (mostly) using standard desktop systems through emulation Because the software and hardware are decoupled it now becomes easier to test the software long before it reaches the hardware through hardware emulation. Emulation is the ability of a program in an electronic device to imitate another program or device. In the past Java tools like the Java ME SDK and the SunSPOTs Solarium provided developers with emulation for a complete set of mobile telelphones and SunSpots. This often included network interaction or in the case of SunSPOTs radio communication. What emulation does is speed up the development cycle by refining the software development process without the need of hardware. The software is fixed, redefined, and refactored without the timely expense of hardware testing. With tools like the Java ME 3.2 SDK, Embedded Java applications can be be quickly developed on Windows based platforms. In the end of course developers should do a full set of testing on the hardware as incompatibilities between emulators and hardware will exist, but the amount of time to do this should be significantly reduced. 3. Highly productive language, APIs, runtime, and tools mean quick time to market Charles Nutter probably said it best in twitter blog when he tweeted, "Every time I see a piece of C code I need to port, my heart dies a little. Then I port it to 1/4 as much Java, and feel better." The Java environment is a very complex combination of a Java Virtual Machine, the Java Language, and it's robust APIs. Combine that with the Java ME SDK for small devices or just Netbeans for the larger devices and you have a development environment where development time is reduced significantly meaning the product can be shipped sooner. Of course this is assuming that the engineers don't get slap happy adding new features given the extra time they'll have.  4. Create high-performance, portable, secure, robust, cross-platform applications easily The latest JIT compilers for the Oracle JVM approach the speed of C/C++ code, and in some memory allocation intensive circumstances, exceed it. And specifically for the embedded devices both ME Embedded and SE Embedded have been optimized for the smaller footprints.  In portability Java uses Bytecode to make the language platform independent. This creates a write once run anywhere environment that allows you to develop on one platform and execute on others and avoids a platform vendor lock in. For security, Java achieves protection by confining a Java program to a Java execution environment and not allowing it to access other parts of computer.  In variety of systems the program must execute reliably to be robust. Finally, Oracle Java ME Embedded is a cross-industry and cross-platform product optimized in release version 3.2 for chipsets based on the ARM architectures. Similarly Oracle Java SE Embedded works on a variety of ARM V5, V6, and V7, X86 and Power Architecture Linux. 5. Java isolates your apps from language and platform variations (e.g. C/C++, kernel, libc differences) This has been a key factor in Java from day one. Developers write to Java and don't have to worry about underlying differences in the platform variations. Those platform variations are being managed by the JVM. Gone are the C/C++ problems like memory corruptions, stack overflows, and other such bugs which are extremely difficult to isolate. Of course this doesn't imply that you won't be able to get away from native code completely. There could be some situations where you have to write native code in either assembler or C/C++. But those instances should be limited. 6. Most popular embedded processors supported allowing design flexibility Java SE Embedded is now available on ARM V5, V6, and V7 along with Linux on X86 and Power Architecture platforms. Java ME Embedded is available on system based on ARM architecture SOCs with low memory footprints and a device emulation environment for x86/Windows desktop computers, integrated with the Java ME SDK 3.2. A standard binary of Oracle Java ME Embedded 3.2 for ARM KEIL development boards based on ARM Cortex M-3/4 (KEIL MCBSTM32F200 using ST Micro SOC STM32F207IG) will soon be available for download from the Oracle Technology Network (OTN). 7. Support for key embedded features (low footprint, power mgmt., low latency, etc) All embedded devices by there very nature are constrained in some way. Economics may dictate a device with a less RAM and ROM. The CPU needs can dictate a less powerful device. Power consumption is another major resource in some embedded devices as connecting to consistent power source not always desirable or possible. For others they have to constantly on. Often many of these systems are headless (in the embedded space it's almost always Halloween).  For memory resources ,Java ME Embedded can run in environment as low as 130KB RAM/350KB ROM for a minimal, customized configuration up to 700KB RAM/1500KB ROM for the full, standard configuration. Java SE Embedded is designed for environments starting at 32MB RAM/39MB  ROM. Key functionality of embedded devices such as auto-start and recovery, flexible networking are fully supported. And while Java SE Embedded has been optimized for mid-range to high-end embedded systems, Java ME Embedded is a Java runtime stack optimized for small embedded systems. It provides a robust and flexible application platform with dedicated embedded functionality for always-on, headless (no graphics/UI), and connected devices. 8. Leverage huge Java developer ecosystem (expertise, existing code) There are over 9 million developers in world that work on Java, and while not all of them work on embedded systems, their wealth of expertise in developing applications is immense. In short, getting a java developer to work on a embedded system is pretty easy, you probably have a java developer living in your subdivsion.  Then of course there is the wealth of existing code. The Java Embedded Community on Java.net is central gathering place for embedded Java developers. Conferences like Embedded Java @ JavaOne and the a variety of hardware vendor conferences like Freescale Technlogy Forums offer an excellent opportunity for those interested in embedded systems. 9. Easily create end-to-end solutions integrated with Java back-end services In the "Internet of Things" things aren't on an island doing an single task. For instance and embedded drink dispenser doesn't just dispense a beverage, but could collect money from a credit card and also send information about current sales. Similarly, an embedded house power monitoring system doesn't just manage the power usage in a house, but can also send that data back to the power company. In both cases it isn't about the individual thing, but monitoring a collection of  things. How much power did your block, subdivsion, area of town, town, county, state, nation, world use? How many Dr Peppers were purchased from thing1, thing2, thingN? The point is that all this information can be collected and transferred securely  (and believe me that is key issue that Java fully supports) to back end services for further analysis. And what better back in service exists than a Java back in service. It's interesting to note that on larger embedded platforms that support the Java Embedded Suite some of the analysis might be done on the embedded device itself as JES has a glassfish server and Java Database as part of the installation. The result is an end to end Java solution. 10. Solutions from constrained devices to server-class systems Just take a look at some of the embedded Java systems that have already been developed and you'll see a vast range of solutions. Livescribe pen, Kindle, each and every Blu-Ray player, Cisco's Advanced VOIP phone, KronosInTouch smart time clock, EnergyICT smart metering, EDF's automated meter management, Ricoh Printers, and Stanford's automated car  are just a few of the list of embedded Java implementation that continues to grow. Conclusion Now if your a Java Developer you probably look at some of the 10 reasons and say "duh", but for the embedded developers this is should be an eye opening list. And with the release of ME Embedded 3.2 and the Java Embedded Suite the embedded developers life is now a whole lot easier. For the Java developer your employment opportunities are about to increase.   I use Wubi to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my Windows 7 system. My PC is Acer Aspire S5-391 with a 64-bit operating system. After I finish installing Wubi on Windows I reboot my PC as told by the instruction. Then I got a black screen with the following words shown: [[BGave up waiting for root device. Common Problems: -Boot args (cat/proc/cmdline) -Check rootdelay=(did the system wait long enough?) -check root=(did the system wait for the right device?) -Missing modules(cat/proc/modules; ls/dev) ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/928E20128E1FEE0B does not exist. Dropping to a shell! BusyBox v1.18.5(ubuntu 1:1.18.5-1ubuntu4)built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. (intramfs) _ I don't know how to deal with this but force my PC to shut down. I can still successfully enter Windows. But everytime I try to enter unbuntu, it shows the above words.......

• Help find correct alsa model for onboard sound (alc887?) that will work with jack and have correct mixer setup

  I have a Gigabyte GA-MA74GMT-S2 motherboard. I am using Jack for sound - connected to ALSA. I am running Ubuntu 12.04. aplay -l reports card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC887 Analog [ALC887 Analog] The problem is that the default setup, that alsa decides to use, causes stuttering and xruns no matter how generous I set the frames/period or periods/buffer etc. Also, Jack works fine if I plug in an external USB sound system and use that. My processor is an AMD phenom x4 945, and I have 8GB ram, and Video card is Geforce GTX550 Ti, all of which should be quite capable enough. I also tried Pulseaudio and that works fine, but I need to use Jack At first I thought it might be an interrupt conflict, but I have found that adding "options snd-hda-intel model=generic" to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf causes it to play correctly, but the limited mixer setup lacks controls I need - so this setup isn't good enough. Still, it seems to prove it isn't a hardware conflict. I have tried many other models, such as 3stack, 6stack, auto and even basic, and they all suffer from the stuttering. I eventually found "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-6ch-intel" works without stuttering, and mixer is much closer to what it needs to be. Can anyone help on how to get a correct and accurate model for ALSA to use? • How to switch sound-drivers, and to which? [AMD] Hudson Azalia Controller

  System settings/sound does not open, freezes and I have to force close. Speaker symbol with volume control does not open scroll-down menu, and there is no sounds. Many people have problems with Hudson Azalia in Ubuntu, but I found no working solution.
