  • Best way to layout in HTML forms?

    I want to display an HTML form containing labelled text fields, like this: First Name: [_____________] Last Name: [_____________] Date of Birth: [________] My obvious approach is to use a <TABLE> and simply place the labels and text fields in its cells, but is there a better way, e.g. a CSS-based approach?

  • Learning Ruby on Rails

    As it stands now I'm a Java and C# developer, but the more and more I look at Ruby on Rails, the more I really want to learn it. What have you found to be the best route to learn RoR? Would it be easier to develop on Windows, or should I just run a virtual machine with linux? Is there an ide that can match the robustness of Visual Studio? Any programs to develop that give a good overhead of what to do? Any good books? Seriously, any tips/tricks/rants would be awesome.

  • Disposing of Objects with long living dependencies

    public class ABC { public ABC(IEventableInstance dependency) { dependency.ANewEvent += MyEventHandler; } private void MyEventHandler(object sender, EventArgs e) { //Do Stuff } } Let us say that an instance of ABC is a long living object and that my dependency is an even longer running object. When an instance of ABC needs to be cleaned up, I have two options. One I could have a Cleanup() method to unsubscribe from the ANewEvent event or I could implement IDisposable and in the Dispose unwire the event. Now I have no control over whether the consumer will call the dispose method or even the Cleanup method should I go that route. Should I implement a Finaliser and unsubscribe then? It feels dirty but I do not want hanging instances of ABC around. Thoughts?

  • Rails "Load more..." instead of pagination.

    I have a list of elements, and I've been using will_paginate up until now, but I'd like to have something like "load more..." at the bottom of the list. Is there an easy way to accomplish this using will_paginate or do I need to resort to some other method here? From what I know this is a better route anyhow because then I don't need a SQL count of the records. And it really doesn't matter if there are like 9,847 pages, nobody would need the records beyond the first couple pages anyhow.

From what I see, they take a username-password (or something) and, on validation, return a digital token. How is using this token any more secure then just relying on the username-password in the first place?

  • Why did mislav-will_paginate start adding so much garbage to urls between rails 2.3.2 and 2.3.5?

    I've used will_paginate in a number of projects now, but when I moved one of them to Rails 2.3.5, clicking on any of the pagination links (page number, next, prev, etc.,) went from getting nice URLs like this: http://foo.com/user/1/date/2005_01_31/phone/555-6161 to this: http://foo.com/?options[]=user&options[]=date&options[]=2005_01_31&options[]=phone&options[]=555-6161 I have a route that looks like this that is probably the source of the 'options' keyword: map.connect '/browse/*options', :controller=>'assets', :action=>'browse' It's enough of an annoyance that I'm willing to roll a paginator to get around this if there isn't a way to get back to where I was before. Is there a way to get will_paginate to turn array-style routes into sane urls again? Thanks.

    I've been interested in writing an application that will show how to fit boxes (of random dimensions) in a container so there is as little space as possible left. A real life example would be something that would tell you how to use the most space in a UPS truck. Does anyone know of a good place to start for something like this?     Hi all, i still have some problems with javascript closures, and input/output variables. Im playing with google maps api for a no profit project: users will place the marker into a gmap, and I have to save the locality (with coordinates) in my db. The problem comes when i need to do a second geocode in order to get a unique pairs of lat and lng for a location: lets say two users place the marker in the same town but in different places, I dont want to have the same locality twice in the database with differents coords.   • valgrind on server process

    hi i am new to valgrind. I know how to run valgrind on executable files from command line. But how do you run valgrind on server processes like apache/myqld/traffic server etc .. I want to run valgrind on traffic server (http://incubator.apache.org/projects/trafficserver.html) to detect some memory leaks taking place in the plugin I have written.   • Howto allow "Illegal characters in path" ?

    I have a MVC.NET application with one route as follows: routes.MapRoute("member", "member/{id}/{*name}", new { controller = "member", action = "Details", id = "" }, new { id = @"\d+" }); Thus, a link could be something like this: http://domain/member/123/any_kind_of_username This works fine in general but if the path contains illegal characters (e.g. a double qoute: http://domain/member/123/my_"user"_name) I get a "System.ArgumentException: Illegal characters in path." After much googling the best suggestions seems to be to make sure that the url doesn't contain any such characters. Unfortunately, that is out of my control in this case. Is there a way to work around this?

    Is it possible to have a separate php.ini file that overrides the default php.ini file for each virtual host? I'm running Apache/2.2.14, PHP 5.3.2-1. For example I have several vhosts pointing to domains in my /var/www/ directory: /var/www/website1.com /var/www/website2.com What I'd like is to be able to place a custom php.ini file in each directory that would override the default values only for that vhost, but keep the original defaults if the value isn't specified: /var/www/website1.com/htdocs/ /var/www/website1.com/php.ini

    I am setting up an application using the MVC model and I have a query regrading the flow of information from the UI to the data model. What I need to do is place data from the UI in the model, what I have done is write a method in the view which collects the required data in an object and then passes it to the model. The model then takes ownership of the data so that the view can release its ownership. Does this sound sensible?

  • How do I set default host for url helpers in rails?

    I would like to do something like this config.default_host = 'www.subdomain.example.com' in some of my configuration files, so that object_url helpers produce link beginning with http://www.subdomain.example.com I have tried to search the docs but I did not find anytnig exept ActionMailer docs and http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/Rails/Configuration.html which is not usefull for me, because I do not know in which pat to look. Is there a place which describes the whole structure of Rails::Initializer.config? Thanks for helping Jakub
