• Windows 8 Disk Mirroring vs Intel Fake RAID

  So Windows 8 is out and I have a new motherboard. I wish to create a RAID 1 coupling between two HDDs -- for storage purposes only (my OS is on an SSD) -- but I don't know which is the best route to take. My motherboard (Z77 chipset) comes with the age old Intel Fake RAID, but since I only wish to use my RAID for storage, I wondered if I might be better to use Windows 8 Disk Mirroring. Can anyone advise which is better? Or perhaps the pros and cons of each, if that's too contentious? I just can't see the benefit of FakeRAID. • Running 32bit eclipse on 64bit windows.

  I am trying to use a 32bit installation of eclipse on my 64bit windows machine. I have eclipse extracted to my C: Drive and Java installed in ProgramFiles(x86) When I go to start eclipse I get the error:Failed to load the JNI shared Library"C:Program Files(x86)\Java\jre6\bin\jvm.dll" I looked and the file is not there. I am setting something up wrong?Just did a fresh install of Java before trying to run eclipse.

• Can I drive two external screens from an 'Alu' iMac?

  I've got a 24" 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo iMac. It's about 18 months old, though I can't specifically remember when I bought it. It has a Displayport Mini-DVI socket on the back, and currently I have that linked to a DVI adaptor driving a Philips 20" widescreen monitor in portrait mode (awesome for browsing). I have another, identical Philips monitor and wondered if there was a way of connecting that to the iMac too. Is there such a thing as a DisplayPort Mini-DVI to dual-DVIs adaptor? Can this iMac's graphics card even drive such a set-up? The graphics chipset in the iMac is reported as ATI Radeon HS2600, 256 MB. The main iMac display is 1920x1200 and the Philips display is 1050x1680 (@60Hz, rotated 90 degrees). The third screen would be another 1050x1680 and ideally I'd have it portrait again, too. EDIT: Please let this question stand - it's not a dupe. The current Mac laptops use 'Mini Displayport' connectors, which are not the same as DisplayPort Mini-DVI connectors.

• How can I resize a partition managed by LVM?

  I have a fresh CentOS install on my machine and I would like to make space on the drive available in order to install Arch Linux. Unfortunately, LVM is new to me and doesn't appear to work well with gParted (on my Ubuntu 9.0 LiveCD, anyways). It always seems to treat the LVM as some unknown filesystem. I tried to use the 'lvm' utility on the LiveCD in order to resize the partition down, but I ended up somehow corrupting my filesystem (hence the fresh CentOS install). I haven't been able to find any documentation on LVM that makes much sense to me as a *nix n00b. Is there anywhere I can find some helpful documentation on LVM as well as a clear step by step on how to successfully resize a partition? Thanks, Mike

• Best approach to utilize RamDisk for Chrome?

  I use a lot of tabs and after a while less recently opened tabs take some time to become responsive, which I guess is because they're being un-cached to HDD as they're not required. So after creating a Ram-Disk I have two options, use --disk-cache-dir="G:/" switch to do what it does. Or what I'm currently doing: using a directory junction for "[...]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default" to move that entire folder over to Ram-Disk. I thought this would be better than just disk-cache but what do I know. Is it? As one can guess it'll be a pain saving/loading the Ram-Disk image each time I start chrome but if it really is better than the former approach I'll write a script or something.

  I am having problem with a user account on a Windows 7 machine (local install, admin user account) APPDATA and LOCALAPPDATA environment are not set. Another user on the same machine, (also a local account, but without admin rights) has the variables set. This started to happen recently, however, I can not figure out if there was something installed on the machine to cause this. This is creating issues with applications that are trying to expand the variables to store local files. Thank you for the help.

  When I highlight and right-click on text in an email message in Apple Mail 4.4 (1082), I can select "Search in Google". Despite having either Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox set as my default web browser within Apple Safari 5.0.3 (6533.19.4) preferences, Apple Mail will open Safari, then open a new window in Safari with the search results. How do I change the default URL handler in Apple Mail, so that searches are opened in my default browser? Or is this a known bug? Thanks for your advice!

Suppose I do that, and have 4 VMs running, but then want to expand. If I separately purchase additional Windows licenses, or I consolidate a machine with an existing license, can I spin up a 5th, 6th virtual machine (presuming there are enough CPU/RAM resources on the host)? Or does the host OS limit the number of virtual machines allowed?

But it seems strange to me because, as you can see in the previous ipconfig output the VmWare network adapter addresses are: 192.168.129.1 and 192.168.15.1. So I have also 2 others doubts: 1) What device represents the 192.168.15.2 ip address that the virtualized Ubuntu see as Default gateway but that is not my router? 2) What exactly do the two VmWare network adapter that I have configured into my Windows 8 system?   Background I own a company which does a lot of FedEx Ground shipping. We have a 3rd party fulfillment center, which stores some of our inventory and at our request ships it. Zebra/Thermal printers are the most cost effective shipping label printers available and our 3rd party fulfillment center has one. I want to generate the labels locally then e-mail the 3rd party fulfillment center a PDF of the labels which they can then print out on their printer. Problem The trouble is, I can't seem to figure out how to print these 4" x 6" labels to a PDF, as FedEx (both ship manager and fedex.com) uses javascript to detect what printer I have. Question What's a clever way to send my 3rd party fulfillment center a PDF (or equivalent) of our 4" x 6" zebra thermal printer labels so they can print them out without re-entering the data?

• Ubuntu boots into command line instead of X.

  I posted this on the Ubuntu forums and they had no good answer. I hope you guys have a solution! On my relatively new install, it's booting into command line instead of X--again. This is the reason I reinstalled in the first place. This has happened to me three times now. So, I boot up and it gets past GRUB, past the glowing Ubuntu option, then it prompts me for my username, then password. I run: startx And that starts the GUI for about a minute, then it runs the GUI login system. To add to the mess, the network-applet is not shown in the panel. Additionally, Chrome will not launch (I ran Firefox from the terminal). What's the problem here?

• CalDAV : request error problem

  We have an xserve which hosts our internal calendars through CalDAV. Personally have 4 calendars from the server set to show in my iCal. Frequently throughout the day at random moments I will get the below error. If I hit ignore, it will just continue to work without any issues. This is more of an annoyance then anything (the dock icon jumping all the time). I have full permission to read anything, so it is not an actual permission issue. Anyone know what might be the issue? • Cannot login to Windows7 in normal mode but can in safe mode

  I have a Windows 7 Ultimate computer (Shuttle) that I built myself and in it I put a Solid State Drive (SSD). It's been working well for a number of months but now when I start it there are problems. I have 2 users setup on the computer and when I try and sign in with either user it claims that the password is incorrect. I could understand the odd typo but I've had my wife try it as well and we've got the passwords correct. On top of that it will remain at the login screen for 1 minute and 20 seconds and then spontaneously reboot without shutting down. So I'm trying to work out if this is a hard disk problem or something else. Any ideas? (I have a nightly backup to a WHS so it will be easy to recover but I don't want to do that unless I have to and don't want to waste time putting in a new HD just to discover it's something else.) More info: If I start in Safe Mode I am able to login with the password and all appears as normal as it can in Safe Mode. However, normal boot continues with same problem.

• Out of memory Problem

  I'm running a C++ program in Ubuntu 10.04 (32-bit system architecture). If I calculate the amount of memory that my program uses, it comes up to 800MB. I have a 4GB RAM in place. But still before the program even finishes it throws an out of memory exception. Why is that happening ? Is it because of the structure of the memory or implementation problems or what could possibly trigger this issue ? I've had seen this problem quite a number of times before but never understood the reason behind it. Have any of you handled this case before ?

It used to work before but after I formatted my system it gives the following error every time I start the vpn client If I check the logs I see this error The Juniper Network Connect Service service is marked as an interactive service. • Cannot copy non-latin characters from PDF document

  Hi, I have a pdf file which contains some non-latin european characters. If I copy some text with the highlight tool, and paste it into another program (word, notepad) - the 'special' characters do not transfer correctly (I get other odd characters in their place). I have tried copying the text from both Acrobat Reader and Foxit. Is there anything I can do here to copy this? Thanks

I have tried quite a few of them, from my google searches, but none work, they all come up and say no proper driver can be found for your hardware.
