• Unable to connect to remote MS SQL Server 2008 Express SP3 instance by name

  I am trying to connect to a remote MS SQL Server 2008 SP3 x86 Instance using it's name. At the first glance all seems to work well (e.g. it is possible to connect to the server locally and succesfully telnet it's port remotely), but there is a thing I can't understand... This line should connect us to the default instance of remote SQL Server: osql -S ServerIP -d MyDatabase /U sa -P MyPassword and it does the trick, however the next one: osql -S ServerIP\MyInstance -d MyDatabase /U sa -P MyPassword ends up with the following error: [SQL Native Client]SQL Network Interfaces: Error Locating Server/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF]. [SQL Native Client]Login timeout expired [SQL Native Client]An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. The only instance running on the server is MyInstance, which is (I guess) the default one. Could you please put some time in explaining the issue.

• Converting DOCX files to PDF via SSH without losing formatting

  I'm struggling to find a solution that will allow me to convert a DOCX file to a PDF without losing or malforming the formatting of the document on CentOS 5.7. I have tried CUPS-PDF but it doesn't work; spool files appear in the /var/spool folder but nothing happens after that. OpenOffice and LibreOffice converted a DOCX to PDF but the formatting was all wrong. However if I print the DOCX to a Windows PDF printer from my Windows 7 workstation, it outputs to PDF absolutely fine. So why can't Linux do the same? I tried to print via CUPS to the Windows PDF printer (shared) but the document appears in the queue as "Remote Downlevel Document" and doesn't print. This only happens when I print from Linux.

• Why doesn't my computer work at full speed?

  My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-8I915PL-G with an Intel Pentium 4 630 3,0 GHz which doesn't run at it's default speed. It's currently at FSB 800, CPU Host 200 and CPU 3000 MHz; but sometimes it runs at FSB 533, CPU Host 133 and CPU 2025 MHz. Sometimes it's even at FSB 75 and CPU 1128 MHz. When I configure the default settings in Easy Tune then my computer doesn't work. Sometimes I need to clear the CMOS so I can set the default settings in the BIOS, but that doesn't always help. I've updated the BIOS, what else can I do to fix this problem?

• Firefox 3.6 - Navigation Toolbar - Google search box language problem

  Using Win7 Home Prem with Firefox 3.6 I like using the google search box in the Navigation Toolbar because it's quicker to do a search but as i am English and i am in Thailand it seems to do the search within www.google.co.th by default and so nearly everything on the google search page that comes up is in the Thai language (which is lots of weird squiggles). Is there any way to default the search to google.co.uk or google.com ?? and hence be in English. I can't see anything obvious to change the default search or language??

• How to force 640*480@60Hz screen resolution on xubuntu 12.04

  It seems xubuntu won't be able to correctly set resolution at 640*480@60Hz at its Display settings. And I am unable to correctly my super small 6.4 inch Mitsubishi VGA panel via VGA cable. I have tried to hack both X11 conf /etc/X11/Xorg.conf and xfce4 conf, but all the document I can find is outdated. and conf files are changed into other location. Can someone give me a hand and I'll mark correct for other people to use? Thanks! EDIT: The board is an Intel Atom D2700, gpu is SGX545. I tried to use xrandr --output default --mode 640*480 It seems works fine, but refresh rate is 75Hz, but the screen only suports 60Hz So I used xrandr --output default --mode 640*480 --rate 60 but it give error: xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Can anyone pointing any directions?

• How to customize web-app (pages and UI) for different customers

  We have an ASP.NET web-application which has become difficult to maintain, and I'm looking for ideas on how to redesign it. It's an employee administration system which can be highly customized for each of our customers. Let me explain how it works now: On the default page we have a menu where a user can select a task, such as Create Employee or View Timesheet. I'll use Create Employee as an example. When a user selects Create Employee from the menu, an ASPX page is loaded which contains a dynamically loaded usercontrol for the selected menuitem, e.g. for Create Employee this would be AddEmployee.ascx If the user clicks Save on the control, it navigates to the default page. Some menuitems involve multiple steps, so if the user clicks Next on a multi-step flow then it will navigate to the next page in the flow, and so on until it reaches the final step, where clicking Save navigates to the default page. Some customers may require an extra step in the Create Employee flow (e.g. SecurityClearance.ascx) but others may not. Different customers may use the same ASCX usercontrol, so in the AddEmployee.OnInit we can customize the fields for that customer, i.e. making certain fields hidden or readonly or mandatory. The following things are customizable per customer: Menu items Steps in each flow (ascx control names) Hidden fields in each ascx Mandatory fields in each ascx Rules relating to each ascx, which allows certain logic to be used in the code for that customer The customizations are held in a huge XML file per customer, which could be 7500 lines long. Is there any framework or rules-engine that we could use to customize our application in this way? How do other applications manage customizations per customer?

• Second Monitor Detected, but not receiving a signal after upgrading to 12.04

  After I upgraded to 12.04, my second monitor is detected (in display settings), but will not power on. I have scoured the Internet and forums for a solution and I can't find anything. I have found a couple people with the same problem, but never a solution for it. I am no expert, but I'm certainly not a noob. My computer uses AMD Radeon 6250 graphics, but I do NOT want to use the proprietary graphics drivers. They refuse to work properly with my second monitor (they ATI drivers will only mirror screens, and I've done everything to try to fix it, and I DON't want mirrored screens) Not to mention that the default open-source video drivers seem to work much better than the proprietary anyway! Again, Ubuntu's default video drivers work fine, and they even DETECT the second monitor (Dell 19'). I can drag stuff off the screen and put it on the 'space' of the second monitor and even a screen-shot shows that there are two monitors active; but the monitor is OFF. It will not power on. It goes into 'power-save' mode because it is not receiving a signal. For some reason it is not getting the signal to power on, even though Ubuntu thinks the monitor is working properly. I had this working fine on my Sony VAIO yesterday (with Radeon graphics/default Ubuntu video drivers). I upgraded to a Samsung Series 3 and now I have this issue. I can't for the life of me figure out why the monitor is connected, detected and I have screen space for the monitor, but the screen won't turn on! • Restricting permissions to individual documents on SharePoint

  Here's what I'm trying to do: I would like to create a list of documents on a site in my company's SharePoint site. Each document should have specific user's permissions to view and edit it. For example: The list is for performance reports. John has his out there called "John_PR_09.docx". Only him and his supervisor should have permissions to view, edit, or do anything to it. And then another employee has hers out there with permissions for only her and her supervisor, and so on... I have tested this out with a document that I removed the groups and users from (since they inherit permissions from it's parent) and only gave my user account permissions to. I then asked someone else to try and open and she could, she even wrote "TEST" on the document and saved it. What am I doing wrong? I thought I stopped it from inheriting permissions from it's parent and only gave myself rights to edit it.

• What is a Windows text editor that will make it easy for me to have four text files open onscreen at once?

  When brainstorming / planning I like to have four text files open onscreen at once: One for notes/stream of consciousness, one for action items to follow up on, one for a rough outline, etc.... What I'm looking for is an easy way to create / save four text files in this manner in Windows. Most importantly, I need the lines to wrap based on the width of the actual window itself. Not based on a ruler or document size (a la Word or WordPad) and not wrapping "manually only" (like Windows' built in Notepad application.) Also, I need the windows to have no, or at least, little, fluff at the top of each document (menubars, ribbons, etc.) On my Mac, I've found that the built-in TextEdit application is almost perfect for this. There's no header or ribbon taking up space for each document, and lines wrap when they hit the end of the window. I haven't had any luck finding a Windows application that works the same way.

• Not able to track traffic on subdomain using Google Analytics

  I'm trying to track traffic for my sub-domain, but it's not happening. This is how it's set up. My partner has a domain called sub1.partner.com. This domain points to partner1.mydomain.com. The idea is that users think they are browsing my partners website, when they are in fact browsing pages on my server. • Javascript widgets: do links count as SEO backlinks? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How good is it for SEO if you have a widget that lives on other sites? On my website I offer an option to let users embed information from my site with some kind of "homepage widget". If a user wants to embed it in his website, he basically has to add one line of Javascript to his HTML files like this: <script src="http://mysite.com/myscript.php?some_options_here"></script> Inside the widget, I export some content from my website and of course create a link back to my website. This is done in Javascript with document.write. document.writeln("My great exported content"); document.writeln('<a href="http://mysite.com?ref=widget>Check mysite.com</a>'); I have Google Analytics set up to track whether the links in there get clicked, and they do. Now I am asking myself if Google recognizes these links as valid backlinks from the embedding domain. I know that Googlebot can parse and execute Javascript, but I have not found any references whether these links also count as "normal" backlinks.

• Disable log rotation for apache or move file location

  I need to change the log retention for apache, currently is seems to be running on the default from logrotate.conf which is weekly. It creates 'access_log.1' 'access_log.2' and so on for each week. The problem is it deletes the last log file every week, 'access_log.5', I need the logs to keep going infinitely instead of the last log being deleted every week. It seems to be running on the default value from logrotate.conf - I don't want to change the default values held in that file, so I assume there is a way to change the retention using the /etc/logrotate.d/httpd file? the contents are as follows: /var/log/httpd/*log { missingok notifempty sharedscripts postrotate /sbin/service httpd reload > /dev/null 2>/dev/null || true endscript } what can I add/change to stop the last log being deleted every week?

• Switching to tabs to the right or left of the current tab in Notepad++

  How can I switch to the document to the left or right of the current document in Notepad++? For example, if I have documents A, B, and C open, and I'm currently editing B, I would like a shortcut to be able to switch to A (Alt-LeftArrow or Ctrl-Pageup) or C (Alt-RightArrow or Ctrl-PageDown). Is this possible? All I've found is a way to switch to next or previous documents based on the "history" of when the document was last opened (Ctrl-Tab and Ctrl-Shift-Tab), which are useful, but not what I want.

  Nullable types vs Non-nullable types   While developing our C# projects its frequent the null comparison operation to avoid null exceptions. This simple operation is mainly coded using the "var x = null" code example inside an if clause. However not all types of variables are nullable, which means that setting a variable to null is not allowed in every cases, it depends on what kind of type are you defining. But what if there was an extension to your non-nullable type that would convert your variable types to nullable? This extension really exists. As I said before in C# you have nullable types which represent all the values of an underlying type, and an additional null value and can be declared easily using "T?", where T is the type of the variable and for example the normal int type cannot be null, so its a non-nullable type, however if you define a "int?" your variable can be null, what you do is convert a non-nullable type to a nullable type. Example: int x=null;     Not allowed     int? x=null;   Allowed     While using nullable types you can check if a variable is null the same way you do it with nullable types:     But what about setting a default value when a certain variable is null?   In this cases the c# .net framework let you set a default value when you try to assign a nullable type to a non-nullable type, using the ?? operator. If you don't use this operator you can still catch the InvalidOperationException which is throw in this cases. • TextPad printing to incorrect printer

  I have tried to find an answer on Google, and searched SU, but have not found anything on this particular issue. I Looked for a setting in the TextPad menu and didn't see anything that seemed relevant. I have 2 networked printers that are the same model. (HP LaserJet 2200 Series PCL 5) One is near me and the other is across the building. The one near me is my default. It seems that TextPad remembers the last printer used and defaults to it rather than printing to the system default, so when I force it to print to my default printer once, the problem is solved until I decide to print to the other printer for some reason. If I don't remember the problem, and specifically print a job to the nearby printer to correct it, I'll end up either wasting paper or wasting trips across the building to pick up printjobs that got printed there by accident. Has anyone else noticed this problem? Is there a solution?

  I must admit that I feel rather foolish having to ask this. I recently switched ISPs, and the new one gave us a Ubee DVW3201B as our home gateway. I want to change the Administrator username/password from the defaults, but I've been having some difficulty. Every time, after I save the new username and password, I'm prompted to re-authenticate to the administration interface. It fails no matter what I try. I've tried using: New username / New password Default username / New password Default username / Default password None of the above works. This has happened twice now, with my only recourse after failure being to do a reset to factory defaults (press and hold the hard reset button for 10 seconds). Is there something I'm missing?

Then in the Update function of the Turret I call a function Shoot(), which has that level parameter it got at the moment I created it. • MS Word showing unwanted table borders on screen (but not on print preview)

  I have a MS Word document with a number of tables. The other day when I created it, the tables all had no borders. Today, I opened it up to find that the tables did have borders. However, when I check the border properties on each table, it says that there are no borders. The tables are displayed with cell borders in all view modes except for the reading layout, and they do not show up on print preview. As this document is going to generally be for on-screen viewing, I need to get rid of the borders. How can I accomplish this? (this is a MS Word 2003 *.doc document, in MS Word 2003, which has been the only editor involved.)

• Lost connectivity after configuring multiple network adapters on separate networks

  I am trying to setup an Ubuntu hosting server, currently just for development, and the server has two NICs, each sitting on a different network. eth0 is on 192.168.200.* and eth1 is on 192.168.101.* and each one has a static IP. eth0 is the public facing NIC card and eth1 is strictly for internal access to the server. I initially only setup eth0 and added the eth1 card when I needed it. eth0 was working find until I added eth1, now, can't get any connectivity on eth0 unless I pull eth1 out of the box. The configuration on each system is as follows: auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.200.94 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.200.0 broadcast 192.168.200.255 gateway 192.168.200.253 auto eth1 iface eth1 inet static address 192.168.101.64 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.101.0 broadcast 192.168.101.255 gateway 192.168.101.254 Again eth0 worked fine until I added eth1. I have seen this happen with Windows servers if you have a Default Gateway setup for both NICs, but I am not sure if this works the same on Ubuntu. • Wordpress serving PHP but not CSS or JS

  I'm trying to set up an Amazon EC2 instance to run a Django app and a WP instance side by side, differing only by the incoming URL. Initially, accessing the site via mysite.com/wordpress worked, but I also needed to catch the incoming requests from a subdomain address blog.mysite.com. To do that, I created a default file in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled and included two virtualhost directives, one of which was <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName www.blog.mysite.com <Directory /var/www/wordpress> Order deny,allow Allow from all </Directory> </VirtualHost> This created some errors with the other virtualhost, so I restored the default 000-default file configuration and restarted. Now, accessing mysite.com/wordpress takes forever, and even then the CSS and JS files are not loading. Iside the Firebug Net tab, I can see the HTML response, but the CSS and JS files are not loading at all. What happened here?

• How to force Word to recompute image numbers?

  I have a word document containing images and tables. These have captions which are numbered, like "Image 1-Example of something". Later on I decided to rearrange some of chapters of my document. However numbering of objects remained the same, so the first image is image 8, the second is image 3, etc. I want to force Word to recompute image numbering so first image in document would be image 1, the second - image 2, etc. Is that possible? Will references (added through cross reference feature) to those objects be updated?
