• What program should i use for Ludum Dare?

  I want to participate for the first time on Ludum Dare, but i'm not confortable yet with a language to pick one for making a game on a weekend. So i was looking for a program 'gamemaker' style, just to make something for LD. I was going for Construct 2, but i use Linux and they don't have a linux version. So the alternative i use is Stencyl, witch is great and probably is what i'm going to use. However, i wanted to know if there is something similar and better for Linux. Also, if i get a computer with Win8, is it worth the trouble for Construct 2?

We are in England, a country with so many names and very few ice cold beverages.  We find ourselves and our wives and yungins (we can say that cause we are from Florida) in the first SQL Saturday in the U.K., Cambridge.  Though I have spent some time with Buck over the years, this trip stood out as being one where we really bonded. • jQuery mobile List-View is not working after adding some jquery code [closed]

• Would a multitouch capable PC allow me to do Android development simulating the touch UI without an Android device ?

  Hi, I recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy Tab as a reference implementation (phone and first gen Android tablet), of Android 2.x for app development. I have noticed a slew of Android 3.0 slates being talked about at CES 2011 (Motorola XOOM, etc.). If I had a multitouch PC with the Android SDK/Emulator on it, would this allow me to more closely approximate device simulation by allowing user input via the multitouch screen ? Would it work via touch just like Windows 7 recognizes touch as mouse style input ? Has anyone done this ? Thanks, Scott

• WordPress bot issues

  I need to implement a blog into a clients site as he is unhappy with his current basic CMS driven solution. It needs to suit both seo and the current style and as I'm a front end dev/designer and they don't have budget to redevelop - the only solution I can think of is to setup a Wordpress blog and restyle to suit. My only worry about this is the current press reports on WordPress being affected by webbots. I understand the main worry Is if you use an id of admin, but I'm concerned that regardless of this the site could be bombarded with bot requests and cause timeouts! Is this valid? If so is there any way to avoid this issue!? If not can anyone recommend another good SEO friendly blog solution!?

  A new article by Oracle’s Java Champion Jim Weaver, titled “Expressing the UI for Enterprise Applications with JavaFX 2.0 FXML -- Part Two,” now up on otn/java, shows developers how to leverage the power of the FX Markup Language to define the UI for enterprise applications. Weaver, the author of Pro JavaFX Platform, extends the SearchDemoFXML example used in Part One to include more concepts and techniques for creating an enterprise application using FXML. Weaver concludes the article by summarizing its content, “FXML provides the ability to radically change the UI without modifying the controller. This task can be accomplished by loading different FXML documents, leveraging JavaFX cascading style sheets, and creating localized resource bundles.   my question is rather short: How do I document typescript code properly? I found out that for projects becoming bigger and bigger, it is important to look at a function and immediately know parameters, what it returns and side-effects etc. It is tiring to have just a bunch of comments before a function, most of the time these 'blocks' even look differently in style. What I am looking for is a documentation tool like javadoc or doxygen for typescript. Is there anything out there? Or is it possible to 'abuse' a documentation tool and get it to work with typescript?

• What is a good use case for scala?

In the process also learn the language by handing over real features. So I plan to use Scala for some classes to showcase its benefits and convince other devs to look into using Scala too.   There is a school of thought in linguistics that problem solving is very much tied to the syntax, semantics, grammar, and flexibility of one's own native spoken language. Working with various international development teams, I can clearly see a mental culture (if you will) in the codebase. Programming language aside, the German coding is quite different from my colleagues in India. As well, code is distinctly different in Middle America as it is in Coastal America (actually, IBM noticed this years ago). Do you notice with your international colleagues (from ANY country) that coding style and problem solving are in-line with native tongues?

• GLSL Shader Effects: How to do motion blur, etc?

  I am not sure how right it is to ask this question, but still here it goes. I have a full 2D environment, with sprites going around as landscape, characters, etc And to make it more state-of-art looking, i want to implement a motion blur effect, similar to modern FPS's (i.e. crysis) blur when moving fast the camera. In a sidescroller, the desired effect is having this slight blur appearing to give the idea of fast movement, when the camera is moving. If anyone could give me some tips on doing this, im assuming in a pixel shader, i'd be grate. Also, if anyone has other good tips on cool pixel shader effects for 2D games it would be awesome, like some stylizing post fx, such as previous Prince of Persia illustrative style. Thanks

• What's the best platform for blogging about coding ?

  I'm toying with starting an occasional blog for posting odd bits of coding related stuff (mainly C++, probably). Are there any platforms which can be recommended as providing exceptionally good support (e.g syntax highlighting) for posting snippets of code ? (Or any to avoid because posting mono-spaced font blocks of text is a pain). Outcome: I accepted Josh K's answer because what I actually ended up doing was realizing I was more interested in articles than a blog style, getting back into LaTeX (after almost 20 years away from it), using the "listings" package for code, and pushing the HTML/PDF results to my ISP's static-hosting pages. (HTML generated using tex4ht). Kudos to the answers mentioning Wordpress, Tumblr and Jekyll; I spent some time looking into all of them.

• FAQ&ndash;Highlight GridView Row on Click and Retain Selected Row on Postback

  A couple of months ago I’ve written a simple demo about “Highlighting GridView Row on MouseOver”. I’ve noticed many members in the forums (http://forums.asp.net) are asking how to highlight row in GridView and retain the selected row across postbacks. So I’ve decided to write this post to demonstrate how to implement it as reference to others who might need it. In this demo I going to use a combination of plain JavaScript and jQuery to do the client-side manipulation. I presumed that you already know how to bind the grid with data because I will not include the codes for populating the GridView here. For binding the gridview you can refer this post: Binding GridView with Data the ADO.Net way or this one: GridView Custom Paging with LINQ. It is also where we set the previous row and rowIndex values in HiddenFields.  The $(function(){}); is a short-hand for the jQuery document.ready function. This function will be fired once the page is posted back to the server that’s why we call the function RetainSelectedRow(). The RetainSelectedRow() function is where we referenced the current selected values stored from the HiddenFields and pass these values to the ChangeRowColor) function to retain the highlighted row. • Showing All Pages in a SharePoint Wiki Library

  Opening a SharePoint wiki takes you to the wiki homepage, which is what most users want and expect.  Administrators, on the other hand, will occasionally need to see a full list of wiki pages in the wiki library.  Getting to this view is really easy, but you have to know where to look. The problem is that when viewing a wiki page SharePoint conveniently removes the Library tab from the ribbon, and the Library tab houses the controls you normally use to switch views.  Many an admin has been frustrated by the fact that they cannot get to this functionality.  A bit more searching, however, reveals that the Page tab in the ribbon contains a button in the Page Library group called View All Pages.  As the name suggests, clicking this button displays a document library style view all the pages in the wiki.  It also makes the Library tab available to switch views and gives administrators access to all of the standard Library tab functionality.

• Parsing stdout with custom format or standard format?

  To integrate with other executables, a executable may launch another executable and capture its output from stdout. But most programs writes the output message to stdout in custom format and usually in human readable format. So it requires the system integrator to write a function to parse the output, which is considered trouble and the parser code may be buggy. Do you think this is old fashioned? Most Unix-style programs do that. Very few programs write to stdout in standard format such as XML or JSON, which is more modern. Example: Veracity (DVCS) writes JSON to stdout. Should we switch to use modern formats? For a console program, human readable or easy parsable: which is more important ?

• Is there a way to procedurally generate the history of a world?

  I am somewhat intrigued by the diagram found here representing 1800 years of cultural history in an imaginary world some guy created. This sort of thing would seem to have strong applications for game development, insofar as world design. It looks like he did this diagram by hand. What I'm interested in is seeing if there is a way to create this sort of diagram programatically. If you were tasked with generating diagrams in the style of the above from random values, how would you go about it? Are there any particular data structures or algorithms that you would consider?
