• Is there a "Run Level Configurator" for Windows XP?

  I have been having trouble with something causing my Windows XP system to take 6-8 minutes to startup from a cold boot. Something is happening during startup that is causing the system to crawl. I have a lot of Linux experience , especially configuring run levels so that some programs start before others do. I also know how to do that on Windows XP but its really complex, and with 50 services I'd have to keep a giant spreadsheet to keep it all organized. Is there such a thing as a Windows XP Tool that "emulates" the Linux run-level editors that I can use to control the order than services start on my system?

• Configure custom SSL certificate for RDP on Windows Server 2012 in Remote Administration mode?

  So the release of Windows Server 2012 has removed a lot of the old Remote Desktop related configuration utilities. In particular, there is no more Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration utility that gave you access to the RDP-Tcp properties dialog that let you configure a custom certificate for the RDSH to use. In its place is a nice new consolidated GUI that is part of the overall "edit deployment properties" workflow in the new Server Manager. The catch is that you only get access to that workflow if you have the Remote Desktop Services role installed (as far as I can tell). This seems like a bit of an oversight on Microsoft's part. How can we configure a custom SSL certificate for RDP on Windows Server 2012 when it's running in the default Remote Administration mode without needlessly installing the Remote Desktop Services role?

• SonicWall and Windows CA

  I'm attempting to import a certificate created by a CA I've set up in Windows using AD CS. I've done the following: 1) Created my own CA (MyCompany) 2) Enabled web services (mostly for ease of configuration) 3) Generated a certificate request on the Sonicwall itself 4) Used web services to sign the certificate 5) Imported the sign certificate into the Sonicwall ...this caused the certificate to show "No" for the Verified field. 6) Imported the CA's certificate. This is where I get stuck. I attempted to import the CRL list, but get the following error: CRL Error - Verification failed using CA certificate. No further errors appear in the logs. Without the CRL list the certificate won't verify and it doesn't appear under the "Administration" page so I can select it for use via HTTPS. Any ideas?

  I've seen tutorials articles and posts on how to build datawarehouses with star and snowflakes schemas, denormalization of OLTP databases fact and dimension tables and so on. Also seen comments like: Star schemas are for datamarts, at best. There is absolutely no way a true enterprise data warehouse could be represented in a star schema, or snowflake either. I want to create a database that will server for reporting services and maybe (if that isn't enough) install analisys services and extract reports and data from cubes. My question was : Is it really necesarry to redesign my current database and follow the star/snowflake schemas with fact and dimension tables ? Thank you

• How can I edit files directly from find results

  Let's say, I want to replace one string with another. Normally I use TextMate, but today, I don't remember why, I decided to run the search in Sublime Text 2 (which I installed some time ago, but haven't used since). I was impressed with "Find Results" window, seems more useful that textmate's. Then I tried to edit text right inside that window and (I can swear on my macbook) it worked (I was able to commit those changes to git repo)! I thought then, "Wow, that's a really nice feature. Should I migrate from TM already?". Unfortunately, I wasn't able to reproduce this behaviour later. I can still edit text in "find results" window, but changes don't persist (that is, original files are not touched). Am I doing something wrong now, or was it caffeine-induced hallucination earlier in the day?

  I'm a big user of wikis, mainly Dokuwiki, I really like the clarity and ease of use of simple text files. However all good wikis seem to require a web-server of some kind; has anyone come across a good desktop wiki editor/viewer that work with plain-text files, and allow me to work with wiki text files just like any other document file type (note: not a desktop wiki running inside a local webserver) Before you rush to suggest (I hope!) I have done months of research on this and have tried Wixi, Wikidpad, zulupad.... Any ideas anyone?

• TS connection lost but not local

  I have an office that is connected to a shared db server and terminal services server, that other offices use as well, through a vpn tunnel. For some reason all workstations in the office will lose connectivity to the remote address but will remain connected to their local internet. I have checked both firewalls to ensure all settings match accordingly. They seem to go down at routine times every day and it doesn't last longer than a minute or two. Any ideas of what this may be? OS: Windows Server 2003R2 Terminal Services 5.2 Symantec Gateway 320 & Symantec Firewall/VPN 100

• Default user logon on Windows Server system

  I installed Remote Desktop Services role (ex Terminal Services) on my Windows Server 2008 R2 machine. After installation when I try to logon locally, there's no default user as it used to be. Can I tweak group policy to have my default user back? I did enable to remember last logon user, but it didn't work... Obviously RDS (ex TS) ignores this policy setting. Additional note: I'm not connected to a domain. It's a standalone development machine running server OS. No domain needed for it.

• How to restrict windows service to X cores?

  I'm currently trying ot figure out a decent/nice way of determening what core(s) a single service should run on, in Windows Server 2008. I'm aware that for procceses there is two ways to do it: set affinity through task manager after proccess is launched. use "start /AFFINITY 0x1" or similar bitmask However this does not seem to work very well with services. When i try to launch the exe that the service will also run (the one that needs restriction) it just spawns a new commandline (and starts the process) but the process terminates shortly after. Does anyone here know how to do a similar trick for services? It is not important what core it is running on, it just needs to be restricted to only one. And preferably it should be something that can be automated, so we do not have to interfere when there is a server restart.

• Windows 2012 remote access can't connect

  I have installed Windows Server 2012 for about 9 months ago. Earlier I could connect to my server with an external IP perfectly, but the license for the remote desktop services has ended. First, I thought it was the reason, why I couldn't use my server as RDP-server, to which users may connect. But, than in web I read, that it's possible to use windows native features, just to remove the RDP services, which are trial and the server will work as RDP-server, but with some limitations ( for e.g. such free RDP service may accept only 1 connection and other connection will be disconnected etc ). Is it true, that it's possible? If yes, please give a piece of advice, how should I repair it. Because I don't want to use TightVNC or other stuff. Thanks!

• Selecting text in mobile Safari on iPhone

  I'm trying to make it easy for an iphone user to copy some text to the clipboard in mobile safari. As in the usual "touch-hold-copy". There is a specific bit of text I want to a user to copy. I have full choice of the html markup in which to wrap the text. How can I make it easy, rather than abitrary? For instance: Is there a way to "select all" the text upon touch-down using javascript? Then a user could just continue to touch-hold and then choose copy? Is there a way to bring up the "select all" option? Like you can when typing in a text box? After which they can choose copy? If there's no javascript solution, how can I arrange the html to help Safari select the right bit of text easily? As opposed to just a word, or a wrapping div? I've tried onFocus="this.select()" for various elements, none seem to work. Also tried onClick. Those who have tried to port a site that uses ZeroClipboard to the iPhone might have some ideas. • Binding "Text-Property" of a derived textbox to another textbox doesn´t work

  Hello, i have a class 'MyTextBox' that derives from the default TextBox in Silverlight. This class currently contains no additional code. I set up a binding in xaml to bind the Text-Property of MyTextbox to another Textbox to reflect the input made in the Textbox. The effect is that MyTextBox doesn´t update and not display the text of the other Textbox. Additional i made an equal binding for a normal Textbox. And this works.   I pass a ViewModel (which contains a "Person" object) from the "EditPerson" controller action into the view. When posted back from the view, the ActionResult receives all of the Person properties except the ID (which it says is zero instead of say its real integer) Can anyone tell me why? • OCR: How to improve accuracy - existing libraries for removing non-text 'furniture', shapes, etc to

  I want to remove rectangles etc that enclose text in a screenshot image, so that I can perform optical character recognition to get accurate text from the screenshot. Background: I doing this to extract data from a legacy application for use with other applications. This is the only way to get at this data as associated files are in a closed, proprietary, binary format. I will be using AutoItScript to drive the application to show data in its UI, then I will screenshot this and feed this to tesseract. I've already had some success in automating the UI, and have been able to use tesseract to get plain ascii text out of the bitmap. There are several AutoItScripr forum articles discussing its use with tesseract/OCR but not specifically for my question. http://www.autoitscript.com/forum/index.php?s=6c32c3ece12756e635a619cdf175eff9&showforum=2 What I need to do There are thin, 1-pixel wide rectangles that closely enclose some text, when fed to tesseract, it sees them as I for example for a verticle line of the rectangle. Any thoughts on how to remove the rectangles, or best practices? I'm asking if there is a generic command line based toolset to overwrite rectangles, for example, in .png files. I could then pass the .png through this, then pass it to tesseract. Today I decided to write a second part of this series where I explain how to use DQS, however, as soon as I started the DQS client, I encountered an error that will not let me pass through and connect with DQS client. It was a bit strange to me as everything was functioning very well when I left it last time.  The error was very big but here are the first few words of it. Cannot connect to server. A .NET Framework error occurred during execution of user-defined routine or aggregate “SetDataQualitySessions”: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException (0×80131904): A .NET Framework error occurred during execution of user-defined routine or aggregate “SetDataQualitySessionPhaseTwo”: The error continues – here is the quick screenshot of the error. As my initial attempts could not fix the error I decided to search online and I finally received a wonderful solution from Microsoft Site. The error has happened due to latest update I had installed on .NET Framework 4. There was a  mismatch between the Module Version IDs (MVIDs) of the SQL Common Language Runtime (SQLCLR) assemblies in the SQL Server 2012 database and the Global Assembly Cache (GAC). This mismatch was to be resolved for the DQS to work properly. The workaround is specified here in detail. Scroll to subtopic 4.23 Some .NET Framework 4 Updates Might Cause DQS to Fail. The script was very much straight forward. Here are the few things to not to miss while applying workaround. Make sure DQS client is properly closed The NETAssemblies is based on your OS. NETAssemblies for 64 bit machine – which is my machine is “c:\windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319″. If you have Winodws installed on any other drive other than c:\windows do not forget to change that in the above path. Additionally if you have 32 bit version installed on c:\windows you should use path as ”c:\windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319″ Make sure that you execute the script specified in 4.23 sections in this article in the database DQS_MAIN. Do not run this in the master database as this will not fix your error. Do not forget to restart your SQL Services once above script has been executed. Once you open the client it will work this time. Here is the script which I have bit modified from original script. I strongly suggest that you use original script mentioned 4.23 sections. This check box or radio button is very often accompanied by a text box where the user is supposed to fill out what this Other is. How do you usually handle this set up? What kind of markup do you use? What do you require in your validation? Do you use java script for anything? For example: How do you make the form accessible? Do you use and how do you use the label tag, for example. Do you connect the check box and text box in any way with some javascript? For example, do you activate the text box when the check box is checked? Do you check or uncheck the check box automatically if the text box is filled out or cleared? Do you let validation fail with error messages if the check box is checked but the text box is not filled out, or if the text box is filled out but the check box is not checked? • Problems getting text from an openWysiwyg enabled TextBox

  I have a multiline text box on a form. I dropped in the js file for openWYSIWYG and attached it to the textbox. When I submit the form, the text box has no value. I'm having problems finding documentation on this library. Has anyone else used this who would be able to direct me as to where I can troubleshoot this issue. • How to preprocess text to do OCR error correction

  Here is what I'm trying to accomplish: I need to get a several large text files from a computer that is not networked and has no other output except a printer. I tried printing the text, then scanning the printout with OCR to recover the text on another computer but the OCR gets lots of errors (1 vs l, o vs 0, O vs D, etc). To solve this I am thinking of writing a program to process (annotate?) the text file, before printing it, so that the errors can be corrected from the text output of the OCR program. For example, for 1 (number one) vs l (letter L), I could change the text like this: sample inserting \nnn after characters that are frequently wrong in the OCR results: sampl\108e Then I can write another program to examine the file, looking for \nnn and check the character before the \nnn (where nnn is the ascii code in decimal) and fix it if necessary. Of course the program will have to recognize that the \nnn may have errors too but at least it knows that the nnn are digits and can easily correct them. I think I would add a CRC on each line so that any line that isn't corrected perfectly can be flagged as having a problem. Has anyone done anything like this? If there is an existing way of doing this I'd rather not reinvent the wheel. Or any suggestions for annotation format that would help solve this problem would be helpful too.

• Editing a labels text value through JavaScript in VB ASP.NET

  I have a simple form containing two text boxes, I am attempting to apply some validation to the first text box using JavaScript. This is the first time I have attempted this and am having some trouble. I have a label beside the text box stating an error, this labels visibility property is set to False. I wish the labels visibility to turn true if the text box is empty when the user loses focus. For this I have used the onBlur option within the tags of the text box. It then calls the JavaScript function and should set the label to Visible but it does not. I have tested to see if it is entering the function by using an alert instead and that works. The problem seems to be trying to alter the visibility property of the label. Here is the portion of my code: The JavaScript: function myRegEx(frm) { if ( boxUsername.value == "" ) { invalidUser.visible = True; return false; } } The form: <asp:TextBox onblur="return myRegEx(this)" id="boxUsername" runat="server" Width="200px"></asp:TextBox> <asp:Label id="invalidUser" runat="server" visible="False" forecolor="Red" text="* Username must be alphanumeric with no special characters"></asp:Label> Any help would be brilliant.
