  • OOD: All classes at bottom of hierarchy contain the same field

    I am creating a class diagram for what I thought was a fairly simple problem. However, when I get to the bottom of the hierarchy, all of the classes only contain one field and it is the same one. This to me looks very wrong, but this field does not belong in any of the parent classes. I was wondering if there are any suggested design patterns in a situation like this? A simplified version of the class diagram can be found below.   • Rotations and Origins

    I was hoping someone could explain to me, or help me understand, the math behind rotations and origins. I'm working on a little top down space sim and I can rotate my ship just how I want it. Now, when I get my blasters going it'd be nice if they shared the same rotation. Here's a picture. and here's some code! blast.X = ship.X+5; blast.Y = ship.Y; blast.RotationAngle = ship.RotationAngle; blast.Origin = new Vector2(ship.Origin.X,ship.Origin.Y); I add five so the sprite adds up when facing right. I tried adding five to the blast origin but no go. Any help is much appreciated

  • Order independent transparency in particle system

    I'm writing a particle system and would like to find a trick to achieve proper alpha blending without sorting particles because: Each particle is a point sprite in a single mesh and I can't use scene graph ability to sort transparent nodes. The system node should be properly sorted, though. Particle position is computed on shader from initial velocity, acceleration and time. In order to sort the system I would have to perform all this computations on CPU, which is something I want to avoid. Sorting hundreds of particles against camera position and uploading it on GPU each frame seams to be quiet heavy operation. Alpha testing seems to be fast enough on GLES 2.0 and works fine for non-transparent but "masked" textures. Still, it's not enough for semi-transparent particles. How would you handle this?

So from a competitive point of view, there's no choice but to be social and stay connected. By far the majority of users on Facebook and LinkedIn are mobile users – people on iPhones, smartphones, Android phones, and tablets. It's not the couch people, right? It's the on-the-go people – those people at the coffee shops. Usually when you're sitting at your desk on a big desktop computer, typically you have better things to do than to be on Facebook. This is a topic I'm extremely passionate about because I think mobile devices are game changing.     I am looking for a CMS where I can layout the page from scratch using HTML/PHP/CSS and simply enter code such as:- FOR EACH (listOfArticles) SORT mostRecent CATEGORY news LIMIT 5 <div class="articleTitle">{title}</div> <div class="arcielBody">{body}</div> END to get a list of the five most recent articles of a certain category in the relevant place. Does such a thing exist anymore? Unless my mind is playing tricks on me, the CMSs of five or ten years ago had this approach. I am thinking of MovableType and the now defunct CityDesk. It seems to me that CMSs these days have a 'templates first' approach. I.E. you must always choose a template before doing anything - which I find really painful. Learning how to design these structured templates also seems overly painful. So can anyone help me in my quest? Thank you, Mark

  • How to find siblings of a tree?

    On my interview for an internship, I was asked following question: On a whiteboard write the simplest algorithm with use of recursion which would take a root of a so called binary tree (so called because it is not strictly speaking binary tree) and make every child in this tree connected with its sibling. So if I have: 1 / \ 2 3 / \ \ 4 5 6 / \ 7 8 then the sibling to 2 would be 3, to four five, to five six and to seven eight. I didn't do this, although I was heading in the right direction. Later (next day) at home I did it, but with the use of a debugger. It took me better part of two hours and 50 lines of code. I personally think that this was very difficult question, almost impossible to do correctly on a whiteboard. How would you solve it on a whiteboard? How to apprehend this question without using a debugger?

  • Can you change a license once you pick one?

    I am working on a product that I don't feel is completely ready but I have a set of users that are very interested in using it now as "alpha" testers. I would like to give them the product now for free as "alpha" testers, but I would like to later license the software. Is this possible? Can anyone point me to any links/books/articles/etc? Thanks. EDIT: Due to the lack of my clarity and the reponses to the question I thought I should add this statement. I haven't decided if I am going to close-source or open-source this project yet. The user base that wants to get their hands on it now has kind of surprised me and I was concerned about what my options are as far as being able to give it to them now as open-source and later change to closed-source, or even vice versa.   • Turn-Based RPG Battle Instance Layout For Larger Groups

    What a title, eh? I'm currently designing a videogame; a turn-based RPG like Final Fantasy (because everybody knows Final Fantasy). It's a 2D sprite game. These are my ideas for combat: -The player has a group of 15 members (main character included) -During battle, five of the group are designated as active, and appear in the battle. -These five may be switched out at leisure, or when one of the five die. -At any time, the Waiting members can cast buffs, be healed by the active members, or perform special attacks. -Battles should contain 10+ monsters at least. I'm aiming for 20, but I'm not sure if that's possible yet. -Battles should feel larger than normal due to the interaction of Waiting members, active members and the increased amount of monsters per battle. -The player has two rows in which to put the Active members: front and back. -Depending on the implementation, I might allow comboing of player attacks and skills. These are just design ideas, so beware! I have not been able to test this out yet- I have no idea yet if any of these ideas bunched together will make for a compelling game. What sounds good on paper doesn't necessarily have to be good in practice! What I'm asking now is how to create the layout for this. My starting point are the battles in Final Fantasy VI, with up to 5-6 monsters on the left and the characters on the right- monsters on both sides if it's a pincer attack. However, this view would not work feasible with my goal of 20 monsters and 5 characters. All the monsters on the left would appear cluttered unless I scale them far far back. If I create a pincer-like map, then there would be no real pincer-attack possible. If I space the monsters out I force the player to scroll the screen- a game mechanic I've come across and not enjoyed imho. My question is: does anybody have any layouts or guides for designing battle maps in turn-based RPGs, especially with a larger number of enemies taken into consideration? How should it look? I am not asking for specific combat mechanics, just the layout for the moment.

  • HLSL: An array of textures and sampler states

    The shader must switch between multiple textures depending on the Alpha value of the original texture for each pixel. Now this would word fine if I didn't have to worry about SamplerStates. I have created my array of textures and can select a texture based on the Alpha value of the pixel. But how do I create an Array of SamplerStates and link it to my array of textures? I attempted to treat the SamplerState as a function by adding the (int i) but that didn't work.   • How to manually detect deadlocks

    I understand the concepts of deadlock well enough, but when I'm given a problem like the one below I'm not sure how to go about solving it. I can draw a resource allocation graph, but I'm not sure how to solve it from there. Is there a better more formal way of solving this? Consider a system with five processes, P1 through P5, and five resources, R1 through R5. Resource ownership is as follows. • P1 holds R1 and wants R3 • P2 holds R2 and wants R1 • P3 holds R3 and wants R5 • P4 holds R5 and wants R2 • P5 holds R4 and wants R2 Is this system deadlocked? Justify your answer. If the system is deadlocked, list the involved processes.

  • Mediamonkey ratings imported into Rhythmbox/Banshee/Quod Libet

    I recently made a complete shift from Windows 7 to Ubuntu 12.04. Everything went smoothly until I scanned my music files in some of the Ubuntu players... All of my ratings added in Windows, using Mediamonkey, were out-of-five-stars (some with a half-star precision) - but when imported into RhythmBox, Banshee and Quod Libet, they all changed to a out-of-four-stars rating, with no five-star songs and no indication of how the old ratings were mapped into the new system. Does anyone know how to fix this? Even getting to know which way the ratings were mapped from 5-star system (with a half-star increment) to a 4-star basis will be very helpful. Thank you!

My initial response was to assail the assumptions underlying the problem. Language is a fluid thing, I argued. It changes in real time. Vocabulary and usage patterns shift day-to-day. To develop a list of words and their frequencies means taking a snapshot of a moving target.   • How do I implement a "sliding out of / into" effect on a settings menu similar to that in Angry Birds?

    I'm trying to implement a settings menu component similar to that in Angry Birds - a button control that makes an options menu slide out of it and back into it when clicked on. I use scene2d.ui to build the UI components: a Button in a Table to implement the button control, a Table to implement the options menu, and a Stack to lay these out one on top of the other and at this moment I have the following behavior: When the user hits the button control for the first time, then the alpha of the table component is set to 1; When the user hits the button control the second time, then the alpha of the table component is set to 0; And so on. Any ideas how I can get the sliding out of and into effect on user clicks with libgdx? Similar to what Angry Birds provides. Maybe using the TweenEngine, actions, interpolations, combinations of these? Thanks in advance.

  • Recent EC Meetings - RIM forfeits EC seat

    Materials and minutes from the JCP EC Face-to-Face Meeting, held September 2012 in Prague, are now available on the EC Meeting Summaries page.  Topics included JCP.Next, a JCP 2.8 progress report, Inactive JSRs, and two Spec Lead presentations. In October 2011, new EC Standing Rules went into effect. The Rules include the following: "Missing five meetings in a row, or missing more than two-thirds of all meetings in any consecutive twelve-month period, results in loss of EC membership."  Last week, the JCP EC met for their October EC teleconference meeting.  RIM missed this meeting, and has now missed five meetings in a row (see the attendance chart); therefore, RIM has forfeited their EC membership. Results from the 2012 EC Elections will be available on 30 October.  The new merged EC will go into effect on 12 November.
