• GNOME Shell Overview animation is slow on my NVIDIA 320M

  I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on my MacBook Air 11" (late 2010 model 3,1). Compiz runs fine, as well as most of GNOME Shell's animations. The animation for switching to and from GNOME Shell overview is just very slow. Unfortunately, it's the most common animation on Shell. I already applied cd ~/gnome-shell/source/gnome-shell $ curl http://bugzilla-attachments.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=157326 > shell-animations-nvidia.patch $ git am shell-animations-nvidia.pat that I found from http://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell/SwatList , but the issue's still here. How do I fix this?

• Shadowmap first phase and shaders

  I am using OpenGL 3.3 and am tryin to implement shadow mapping using cube maps. I have a framebuffer with a depth attachment and a cube map texture. My question is how to design the shaders for the first pass, when creating the shadowmap. This is my vertex shader: in vec3 position; uniform mat4 lightWVP; void main() { gl_Position = lightWVP * vec4(position, 1.0); } Now, do I even need a fragment shader in this shader pass? from what I understand after reading http://www.opengl.org/wiki/Fragment_Shader, by default gl_FragCoord.z is written to the currently attached depth component (to which my cubemap texture is bound to). Thus I shouldnt even need a fragment shader for this pass and from what I understand, there is no other work to do in the fragment shader other than writing this value. Is this correct?

• KDE's Dolphin Can't See Connected devices such as Nikon, Canon Cameras

  I have noticed this problem across all distros including Kubuntu and openSUSE. Many times my Nikon D 7000 and Canon HF 11 are not seen or mounted by Dolphin. When I connect the Cameras I don't get any notification in the tray which otherwise shows connected device. Ironically when I open Nautilus then I can clearly see the cameras mounted. I also have a request that what these devices don't appear on Dolphin's side panel automatically. • How would I know if my OS is compromised?

  I had opened a php folder from a friend's web host. I run it on mine to fix some bugs. Then I tried attaching the code to be emailed and GMAIL stated that the attachment was infected by a virus. Now I'm afraid if my Apache or OS (12.04) is infected. I checked the php files and found a base64 encoded set of code being 'eval'd at the top of each and every php file. Just reversing it (echo with htmlspecialchars) showed some clue that there were sockets in use and something to do with permissions. And also there were two websites referred having .ru extensions. Now I'm afraid if my Ubuntu system is affected or compromised. Any advice please! • hp smart array lock up code 0x15, what is that? (or where can I get a list of descriptions of HP smart array controller lock up codes)

  Hi, I've had a couple of Dl180 6g boxes hung over the last week, each have a P410 smart array controller. upon reboot the server has indicated that a controller failure event occurred and the previous lock up code was 0x15 - the server rebooted without issue. However there was nothing in the IML log, but the ADU report provided the following; Trap Address High Or Post Results Lockup Reason Or Post Error RIS Updates Or Post Error Detail Firmware Version Trap Address Low 0x8087 0x0015 0x0000033e 0x015e 0xd65c any suggestions on what that code is, my google fu failed. And hp support have not responded with any detail as yet.

  I have a zabbix-proxy and 12 nodes in that proxy. Right now whenever proxy service goes down. It send out of reach mail for all the 12 nodes. I want to send mail only for the zabbix proxy not for the nodes under that proxy Updated: Now I am trying to have a single trigger in which I want to check both the conditions like 1-check zabbix-host is not accessble from past x minutes. 2-check the host is not giving any data to the proxy(Host is down). Not the trigger should start shouting onle when we have condition in which proxy is running and node is down. I tried the below but its not working for me. • Accessing Netatalk/AFP Shares from OS X Snow Leopard

  Recently upgraded Ubuntu home server from 8.04 client to 10.04 server and reinstalled all services therein. One of them is a Netatalk daemon that I configured in a fashion similar to this website: http://www.kremalicious.com/2008/06/ubuntu-as-mac-file-server-and-time-machine-volume/ Finder recognizes my server and the afp service, yet when I attempt to log in (using valid credentials), Finder indicates its the wrong username and password. I've tried altering some of the config files and my Google-fu to look for solutions, but no luck. Any tips? (This was not an issue under 8.04, if it matters)

• Sharepoint Services 3.0: 403 Forbidden fun

  Can't get to the Administration or the "companyweb" site itself; was working up to a week ago. Old threads, blog posts, etc. indicate that there was an issue with a KB update but was resolved when .NET Framework 2.0 SP1 was deployed/installed. Running Process Monitor, I can see a lot of PATH NOT FOUND','NAME NOT FOUND for c:\inetpub\companyweb\Default.aspx, \_themes\ice\...\foo.css, etc. for the w3wp.exe process on CreateFileorQueryOpenoperations. These files do not exist in the location specified. I don't recall these files actually existing in that folder, but I believe they're "created" when requested, pulled in from Common Files/Shared or whatever, in typically-awesome Microsoft Web architecture land (</rant>). Besides reinstalling (which I'm sure will be as much fun as migrating from one server to another was), anyone know what's going on? Google-fu has alluded me.

• Dismissing systray balloons with the keyboard?

  This is probably a supplementary question to how to access the systray using the keyboard... I've read that, and done some googling (google fu lacking, or there really is no answer), but I can't find a nice quick keyboard shortcut to dismiss those info balloons that apps in the system tray choose to display every now and then. The hints for access in the linked question can't be used to close the balloon (and least when I've tried them here). Now I know I can wait for a timeout and they'll go away but if I can just hit , that'd be fanstastic. So... anyone aware of a keyboard shortcut?

• An SQLite/STDIN Conundrum, Specific to AIX

  Hi there! I'm been playing around with SQlite at work, specifically with trying to get the sqlite3 command line tool to accept stdin instead of a file. Sounds easy enough, on linux you can execute a command like: echo 'test' | sqlite3 test.db '.import /dev/stdin test' unfortunately - our machines at work run AIX (5 & 6) and as far as I can tell, there is no equivalent to the virtual file /dev/stdin. I managed to hack together an equivalent command that works on AIX using a temporary file. echo 'test' | cat - > /tmp/blah ; sqlite3 test.db '.import /dev/stdin test' ; rm /tmp/blah Now, does it need to use STDIN? isn't this temporary file thing enough? Probably, but I was hoping someone with better unix-fu had a more elegant solution. note: the data I would like to import is only provided via STDOUT, so that's what the echo 'test' command is all about

  Thanks in advance for your help! As the title states, I have Windows 7 x64 Boot Camp Partition, Snow Leopard on MBP, and VMWare Fusion 2.x/3.x. I'm trying to open the partition as a vm and I get into an endless cycle where windows tries to Repair Start Up disk for a very long time before failing. The boot camp partition runs fine natively. Has anyone experienced this? Can someone provide or link a remedy? My google fu is failing miserably ....

• Is It Possible to Change Default Windows Idle Time for Task Scheduler?

  From the official Microsoft docs: Detecting the Idle State The Task Scheduler service will verify that the computer is in an idle state every 15 minutes. The computer is considered idle if all the processors and all the disks were idle for more than 90% of the past 15 minutes and if there is no keyboard or mouse input during this period of time. Besides, any presentation type application that sets the ES_DISPLAY_REQUIRED flag will make Task Scheduler to not consider the system as being idle. In Windows 7, Task Scheduler considers a processor as idle even when low priority threads (thread priority < normal) execute. Is there any way to change the time to less than 15 minutes minutes? Am I assuming this hard-coded and impossible? My Google-fu has eluded me so far and I found nothing, but wanted to check here before giving up.

• Deprioritize BitTorrent traffic

  I'm sure the question has been asked before, but I can't seem to find it for myself; my Google-fu eludes me. My router, the Linksys E2000, does a decent job at being reasonable about prioritizing some sorts of traffic above BitTorrent traffic (there isn't too much interruption to port 80, 443, or 22 traffic, the ones I use most often). But other ports get pummeled. For instance, 3000 (which I use for local Rails testing) becomes almost entirely non-functioning. Xbox Live traffic (not sure about the ports, but they are in the 1000 range) doesn't do well either. So I'm wondering how to ensure that XBL and local Rails testing maintain strong service while BitTorrent is going. Is it enough that I turn up the QoS on their associated ports to high? It doesn't seem to be as effective as when BitTorrent isn't running at all (I don't know if there's a way to deprioritize BitTorrent traffic).

For example you can restrict Spotlight searches to only look for pdf files like this example, when I'm looking for a pdf cheatsheet for using YUI's grid system css framework on my computer. YUI grid kind:pdf I'd be amazed if Apple's Spotlight didn't have loads of other handy flags to fine tune a search in the same way - what tricks do you use, or where do you look to find more tips to improve your Spotlight-fu?

• Can I buy a wireless access point that also acts as a DNS nameserver?

  Hi, I was wondering if I buy a wireless access point/router that also acts as a DNS nameserver for DHCP clients. I can see the hostnames of my home devices in the DHCP clients table of the router I have, it doesn't seem like a great leap of the imagination to have a local nameserver on there, something like hostname.home that automatically publishes those entries to a local zone. But - I can't find one that does that. Is there a reason why this shouldn't/can't be done? Or is my Google-Fu just weak? Cheers,

  I have a workbook that has two worksheets. The first worksheet is simply a list of the first 78,498 prime numbers in a single column, A1-A78498. The second worksheet has a grid of numbers from 1 to n. The goal is to highlight the cells with prime numbers in the grid by referencing the prime number values in the other worksheet. Is this possible, and if so, how? edit I have named the column with my prime numbers "PRIMES1T". I would like the formula to work for the entire worksheet, regardless of size, but my excel-fu is extremely weak. If at all possible, I would like to be able to enter the formula in the dialog box for conditional formatting (as below): I have tried =NOT(ISNA(MATCH(A:Z,PRIMES1T,0) (only A-Z, but have to start somewhere) with no luck.

• Rsync plugin to many local wordpress installs via script or cli

  I am maintaining a large number of wordpress installs on a production server, and we are looking to deploy InfiniteWP for managing these installs. I am looking for a way to script the distribution of the plugin folder to all of these installs. On server wp-prod, all sites are stored in /srv//site/ The plugin needs to be copied from ~/iws-plugin to /srv//site/wp-content/plugins/ Here's some pseudo code to explain what I need to do: array dirs = <all folders in /srv> for each d in dirs if exits "/srv/d/site/wp-content/plugins" rsync -avzh --log-file=~/d.log ~/plugin_base_folder /srv/d/site/wp-content/plugins/ else touch d.log echo 'plugin folder for "d" not found' >> ~/d.log end end I just don't know how to make it happen from the cli or via bash. I can (and will) tinker with a bash or ruby script on my test server, but I'm thinking the command-line-fu here on SF is strong enough to handle this issue much more quickly than I can hack together a solution.   My google-fu must be sucking. i havent been able to find a good solution for the following: numerous Linux server on commodity hardware Trying to do a recovery mirror copy to external harddrives External harddrives are smaller than source harddrives, but larger than data External drives are connected via usb2 (slow) Servers range from 20GB of data to 400GB of data Servers are remote, so hands on access is a pain need to copy boot files. empty external drives currently Basicly, looking for a way to do use a ghosting solution from INSIDE a running linux server to an external harddrive, without booting a cd etc. the rsync/cpio solutions i've looked at dont work great with grub/dev/proc etc. I understand that since the system isnt offline, it wont be a "mirror" image as files change, but thats ok. Are there any free/commercial products that would work?

• How can I disable logging in Tomcat 7?

  I have a Tomcat 7 server running in a VM that has very little disk space (20G). Over the course of a few days Tomcat will fill the space with logging info (usually about 15G before it runs out). I've tried turning down the log level (from INFO to SEVERE) in the logging.properties file, I've also tried sending the log info to /dev/null. It doesn't seem to work as I still get a full log directory after no time at all. Can I put a file size limit on the log files? Is something overriding the properties I'm setting? Where can I find this information? My Google Fu just returns information about logging from within an application using JULI.

• DOS Batch file to find "new" files by date

  My PC has entered an infinite BSOD loop - but I do have access to a safe-mode command prompt. I'm trying to get an idea of "what changed" that might have triggered this. e.g. I might have gotten a virus, or an app update went belly up. I'd like to thus see which files were created/modified in the last few days/week or at least the *.exe, *.dll, *.com, *.bat etc. I thought I was ok with my Batch-fu but I'm stumped on how to write a quick batch file/command that would list the files for me. REM This will find the files, but the results are all muddled REM all EXE files, reverse sort by date, recursively through sub-directories dir *.exe /O-D /S What I'd really like is to find all (executable filetypes) that were created/modified in the last 3-7 days. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

• Can remote LogMeIn Hamachi users access our local LAN?

  Unknown to me, one of the kids has installed LogMeIn Hamachi on his PC so that he can access and play on his pal's Minecraft server, and vice versa. One of the things I did was disable the Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks on the Hamachi NIC in Windows 7's Network Connections. However, my lack of fu when it comes to these types of services is leaving me feeling a little uncomfortable about him using this. Is there anything I should be worried about here? For example, can his friends access our local LAN (which has a number of NAS boxes with unsecured shares) and get up to no good?

• bootstraping a SparkleShare project

  I just tried SparkleShare as a possible replacement for dropbox/insynch. It looks quite promising, being based on open standards. I was wondering if someone has gone though the process of "bootstraping" a SparkleShare project. I have the initial files I would like to keep synchronized on two clients and the server (as plain files). I was wondering if there would be a way to set a project up so that I would not need to download/upload all the files back and forth (as they are readily available on all three systems). I guess this would involve some git kung-fu I am far from mastering. Thanks!
