  • What laptop for dev with VS

    - by Gareth
Im looking to spend upto £500 on a laptop in the next few days, and am now after a bit of adivce. This laptop will be used to develop personal projects on using VS2010, and SQL sever express. I know this sort of question has been asked plenty before however Im looking for specifics, has anyone bought a laptop recently to run VS on and if so what did you get? has anyone seen any good deals on laptops that fit in my price range? Any suggestions apprieciated Thanks

  • How can one associate a 3ware controller with the corresponding /dev/tw?? device?

    - by barbaz
I have a few 3ware RAID controllers installed in a system. Is there any way to figure out the mapping between the following identifiers, each describing in a way the very same RAID controller? The tw_cli reported controller id (e.g. c0,c1,c2,...) The corresponding device nodes that allow smartctl access via the 3ware driver (e.g. /dev/twa0, /dev/twa1, /dev/twl0) The block device presented to the system representing a RAID unit (/dev/sda, /dev/sdb,...)

  • Recommendation for a touch-enabled dev laptop

    - by Clay Shannon
I don't keep up with hardware much, so would appreciate any tips on what would be a good touch-enabled laptop that I could use for both development and testing of Windows 8 ("Metro"/Store) apps. Is there even such an animal (a touch-centric laptop)? Or will I need to use a laptop for development (in which case I might be able to upgrade my RC version of Windows 8 on my existing laptop to RTM) and purchase a tablet for testing?

  • Conditional `mount` in Linux: dev or nfs

    - by o_O Tync
I have a mount point — let it be /media/question — and two possible devices: a physical HDD and a remote NFS folder. Sometimes I plug the device in physically, in other cases I mount it via NFS. Is there a way to specify both of them in fstab so that executing mount /media/question will preferably choose physical volume, and when it's not available — NFS?

  • freebsd dev server on virtualbox over windows

    - by g_kaya
I need a unixy environment for development purposes. I hate doing things on windows but it is more stable for daily use and I don't have a mac, so I'm having to use windows (7). I want to run freebsd in a virtual machine, configure it to be the localhost server, be able to connect using ssh (within my home-network) and be able to install vbox guest addons. If guest additions aren't the best, I can use solaris or linux flavours. I need no gui. I don't know anything about network stuff, so I need a detailed explanation from vise people here, or a nice doc to read. Edit : To be more specific as requested, I use following on unices: *django 1.4 *apache *python (2.7) *emacs *mysql *probably node.js *bash scripting I use windows to be able to do daily things easily, like connecting to my tablet, browsing and learning java. And I don't want to use linux as my desktop os, beacuse it gets broken a lot, it's annoying to maintain wlan problems and some more.

  • Do I need to be worried about these SMART drive temperatures?

    - by Steve Lorimer
I have 5 hard drives in a machine sitting in a cupboard. /dev/sda is a 500GB Seagate drive, and is the boot disk. /dev/sd{b,c,d,e} are 2TB drives in a raid6 configuration. smartctl is showing significantly higher temperatures (like ~140 degrees celsius) on the raid drives than the boot drive. • BLAS and CUBLAS

    - by Nils
I'm wondering about Nvidia's CUBLAS Library. Does anybody have experience with it? For example if I write a C program using BLAS will I be able to replace the calls to BLAS with calls to CUBLAS? Or even better implement a mechanism which let's the user choose at runtime? What about if I use the BLAS Library provided by Boost with C++?

  • JDK bug migration: components and subcomponents

    - by darcy
One subtask of the JDK migration from the legacy bug tracking system to JIRA was reclassifying bugs from a three-level taxonomy in the legacy system, (product, category, subcategory), to a fundamentally two-level scheme in our customized JIRA instance, (component, subcomponent). In the JDK JIRA system, there is technically a third project-level classification, but by design a large majority of JDK-related bugs were migrated into a single "JDK" project. In the end, over 450 legacy subcategories were simplified into about 120 subcomponents in JIRA. The 120 subcomponents are distributed among 17 components. A rule of thumb used was that a subcategory had to have at least 50 bugs in it for it to be retained. Below is a listing the component / subcomponent classification of the JDK JIRA project along with some notes and guidance on which OpenJDK email addresses cover different areas. Eventually, a separate incidents project to host new issues filed at bugs.sun.com will use a slightly simplified version of this scheme. The preponderance of bugs and subcomponents for the JDK are in library-related areas, with components named foo-libs and subcomponents primarily named after packages. While there was an overall condensation of subcomponents in the migration, in some cases long-standing informal divisions in core libraries based on naming conventions in the description were promoted to formal subcomponents. For example, hundreds of bugs in the java.util subcomponent whose descriptions started with "(coll)" were moved into java.util:collections. Likewise, java.lang bugs starting with "(reflect)" and "(proxy)" were moved into java.lang:reflect. client-libs (Predominantly discussed on 2d-dev and awt-dev and swing-dev.) 2d demo java.awt java.awt:i18n java.beans (See beans-dev.) javax.accessibility javax.imageio javax.sound (See sound-dev.) javax.swing core-libs (See core-libs-dev.) java.io java.io:serialization java.lang java.lang.invoke java.lang:class_loading java.lang:reflect java.math java.net java.nio (Discussed on nio-dev.) java.nio.charsets java.rmi java.sql java.sql:bridge java.text java.util java.util.concurrent java.util.jar java.util.logging java.util.regex java.util:collections java.util:i18n javax.annotation.processing javax.lang.model javax.naming (JNDI) javax.script javax.script:javascript javax.sql org.openjdk.jigsaw (See jigsaw-dev.) security-libs (See security-dev.) java.security javax.crypto (JCE: includes SunJCE/MSCAPI/UCRYPTO/ECC) javax.crypto:pkcs11 (JCE: PKCS11 only) javax.net.ssl (JSSE, includes javax.security.cert) javax.security javax.smartcardio javax.xml.crypto org.ietf.jgss org.ietf.jgss:krb5 other-libs corba corba:idl corba:orb corba:rmi-iiop javadb other (When no other subcomponent is more appropriate; use judiciously.) the current GPU threads are somehow limited (memory limit, limit of data structures, no recursion...). do you think it would be feasible to implement a graph theory problem on GPU. for example vertex cover? dominating set? independent set? max clique?.... is it also feasible to have branch-and-bound algorithms on GPUs? Recursive backtracking?

  • Array subscript is not an integer

    - by Dimitri
    Hello folks, following this previous question Malloc Memory Corruption in C, now i have another problem. I have the same code. Now I am trying to multiply the values contained in the arrays A * vc and store in res. Then A is set to zero and i do a second multiplication with res and vc and i store the values in A. (A and Q are square matrices and mc and vc are N lines two columns matrices or arrays). Here is my code : int jacobi_gpu(double A[], double Q[], double tol, long int dim){ int nrot, p, q, k, tid; double c, s; double *mc, *vc, *res; int i,kc; double vc1, vc2; mc = (double *)malloc(2 * dim * sizeof(double)); vc = (double *)malloc(2 * dim * sizeof(double)); vc = (double *)malloc(dim * dim * sizeof(double)); if( mc == NULL || vc == NULL){ fprintf(stderr, "pb allocation matricre\n"); exit(1); } nrot = 0; for(k = 0; k < dim - 1; k++){ eye(mc, dim); eye(vc, dim); for(tid = 0; tid < floor(dim /2); tid++){ p = (tid + k)%(dim - 1); if(tid != 0) q = (dim - tid + k - 1)%(dim - 1); else q = dim - 1; printf("p = %d | q = %d\n", p, q); if(fabs(A[p + q*dim]) > tol){ nrot++; symschur2(A, dim, p, q, &c, &s); mc[2*tid] = p; vc[2 * tid] = c; mc[2*tid + 1] = q; vc[2*tid + 1] = -s; mc[2*tid + 2*(dim - 2*tid) - 2] = p; vc[2*tid + 2*(dim - 2*tid) - 2 ] = s; mc[2*tid + 2*(dim - 2*tid) - 1] = q; vc[2 * tid + 2*(dim - 2*tid) - 1 ] = c; } } for( i = 0; i< dim; i++){ for(kc=0; kc < dim; kc++){ if( kc < floor(dim/2)) { vc1 = vc[2*kc + i*dim]; vc2 = vc[2*kc + 2*(dim - 2*kc) - 2]; }else { vc1 = vc[2*kc+1 + i*dim]; vc2 = vc[2*kc - 2*(dim - 2*kc) - 1]; } res[kc + i*dim] = A[mc[2*kc] + i*dim]*vc1 + A[mc[2*kc + 1] + i*dim]*vc2; } } zero(A, dim); for( i = 0; i< dim; i++){ for(kc=0; kc < dim; k++){ if( k < floor(dim/2)){ vc1 = vc[2*kc + i*dim]; vc2 = vc[2*kc + 2*(dim - 2*kc) - 2]; }else { vc1 = vc[2*kc+1 + i*dim]; vc2 = vc[2*kc - 2*(dim - 2*kc) - 1]; } A[kc + i*dim] = res[mc[2*kc] + i*dim]*vc1 + res[mc[2*kc + 1] + i*dim]*vc2; } } affiche(mc,dim,2,"Matrice creuse"); affiche(vc,dim,2,"Valeur creuse"); } free(mc); free(vc); free(res); return nrot; } When i try to compile, i have this error : jacobi_gpu.c: In function ‘jacobi_gpu’: jacobi_gpu.c:103: error: array subscript is not an integer jacobi_gpu.c:103: error: array subscript is not an integer jacobi_gpu.c:118: error: array subscript is not an integer jacobi_gpu.c:118: error: array subscript is not an integer make: *** [jacobi_gpu.o] Erreur 1 The corresponding lines are where I store the results in res and A : res[kc + i*dim] = A[mc[2*kc] + i*dim]*vc1 + A[mc[2*kc + 1] + i*dim]*vc2; and A[kc + i*dim] = res[mc[2*kc] + i*dim]*vc1 + res[mc[2*kc + 1] + i*dim]*vc2; Can someone explain me what is this error and how can i correct it?   • segmented reduction with scattered segments

    - by Christian Rau
I got to solve a pretty standard problem on the GPU, but I'm quite new to practical GPGPU, so I'm looking for ideas to approach this problem. I have many points in 3-space which are assigned to a very small number of groups (each point belongs to one group), specifically 15 in this case (doesn't ever change). Now I want to compute the mean and covariance matrix of all the groups. So on the CPU it's roughly the same as: for each point p { mean[p.group] += p.pos; covariance[p.group] += p.pos * p.pos; ++count[p.group]; } for each group g { mean[g] /= count[g]; covariance[g] = covariance[g]/count[g] - mean[g]*mean[g]; } Since the number of groups is extremely small, the last step can be done on the CPU (I need those values on the CPU, anyway). The first step is actually just a segmented reduction, but with the segments scattered around. So the first idea I came up with, was to first sort the points by their groups. I thought about a simple bucket sort using atomic_inc to compute bucket sizes and per-point relocation indices (got a better idea for sorting?, atomics may not be the best idea). After that they're sorted by groups and I could possibly come up with an adaption of the segmented scan algorithms presented here. But in this special case, I got a very large amount of data per point (9-10 floats, maybe even doubles if the need arises), so the standard algorithms using a shared memory element per thread and a thread per point might make problems regarding per-multiprocessor resources as shared memory or registers (Ok, much more on compute capability 1.x than 2.x, but still). Due to the very small and constant number of groups I thought there might be better approaches. Maybe there are already existing ideas suited for these specific properties of such a standard problem. Or maybe my general approach isn't that bad and you got ideas for improving the individual steps, like a good sorting algorithm suited for a very small number of keys or some segmented reduction algorithm minimizing shared memory/register usage. I'm looking for general approaches and don't want to use external libraries. FWIW I'm using OpenCL, but it shouldn't really matter as the general concepts of GPU computing don't really differ over the major frameworks.

  • Sorting by key > 10 integer sequences. with thrust

    - by smilingbuddha
I want to perform a sort_by_key where I have a single key-sequence and multiple value sequences. One usually performs this with sort_by_key( key, key + N, make_zip_iterator( make_tuple(x1 , x2 , ...) ) ) However I want to perform a sort with 10 sequences each of length N. Thrust does not support tuples of size = 10. So is there a way around this ? Of course one can keep a separate copy of the key vector and perform sorts on bunches of 10 sequences. But I would like to do everything in a single call.

  • What's the most trivial function that would benfit from being computed on a GPU?

    - by hanDerPeder
Hi. I'm just starting out learning OpenCL. I'm trying to get a feel for what performance gains to expect when moving functions/algorithms to the GPU. The most basic kernel given in most tutorials is a kernel that takes two arrays of numbers and sums the value at the corresponding indexes and adds them to a third array, like so: __kernel void add(__global float *a, __global float *b, __global float *answer) { int gid = get_global_id(0); answer[gid] = a[gid] + b[gid]; } __kernel void sub(__global float* n, __global float* answer) { int gid = get_global_id(0); answer[gid] = n[gid] - 2; } __kernel void ranksort(__global const float *a, __global float *answer) { int gid = get_global_id(0); int gSize = get_global_size(0); int x = 0; for(int i = 0; i < gSize; i++){ if(a[gid] > a[i]) x++; } answer[x] = a[gid]; } I am assuming that you could never justify computing this on the GPU, the memory transfer would out weight the time it would take computing this on the CPU by magnitudes (I might be wrong about this, hence this question). What I am wondering is what would be the most trivial example where you would expect significant speedup when using a OpenCL kernel instead of the CPU?

  • How to implement HeightMap smoothing using Thrust

    - by igal k
I'm trying to implement height map smoothing using Thrust. Let's say I have a big array ( around 1 million floats). A known graphics algorithm to implement the above problem is to calculate the average around a given cell. If for example I need to calculate the value at a given cell[i,j] what I will basically do is: cell[i,j] = cell[i-1,j-1] + cell[i-1,j] + cell[i-1,j+1] + cell[i,j-1] + cell[i,j+1] + cell[i+1,j -1] + cell[i+1,j] + cell[i+1,j+1] cell[i,j] /=9 That's the CPU code. Is there a way to implement it using thrust? I know that I could use the transform algorithm. But I'm not sure it's correct to access different cells which are occupied but different threads (banks conflicts and so on).

Can anyone let me know what I am missing? Note: the contents of copyListOfNgramCounteachdoc is 0,1,1,1,1,3 . Also the type of copyListOfNgramCounteachdoc is thrust::device_vector<int>.

  • Looking for a good dev environment for OSGi bundles

    - by Riduidel
Hi, I'm currently investigating in the field of dev environment for OSGi bundles. My goal is to find a way to develop, test and debug with ease the bundles I'll be coding. Besides, I have some "cultural" requirements. I want to be able to use java continuous integration servers (typically, Hudson) As a consequence of that first requirement, I want to have a repeatable, one-click build process. My typical tool for that is maven. And finally, being long-term Eclipse user, and having the m2eclipse at hand to merge my eclipse env with my maven one, I obviously want to be able to test and debug with that IDE. So far, here are the infos I know I can use (and have already tested) maven-bundle-plugin, maven-ipojo-plugin which both offer clean packaging facilities I have tested maven pax (and eclipse pax) and am not really satisfied with both : maven pax generates a very heavy project, where adding dependencies is very error-prone (the maven pax:import-bundle command line, with all its arguments, is a hell per se) I have taken a look at Karaf, which seems to have some nice direct maven provisionning, but I don't know how to integrate it with my Eclipse, besides using the traditionnal JPDA bridge. However, it seems to be more production-oriented than dev-oriented, and as such may require heavy configuration to fit my need (although the reading of its user manual doesn't revedal that). Have you got any ideas ? Some maven/eclipse plugins ?

  • Debugging Post Request with Chrome Dev Tools

    - by benek
I am trying to use Chrome Dev for debugging the following Angular post request : $http.post("http://picjboss.puma.lan:8880/fluxpousse/api/flow/createOrUpdateHeader", flowHeader) After running the statement with right-click / evaluate, I can see the post in the network panel with a pending state. How can I get the result or "commit" the request and leave easily this "pending" state from the dev console ? I am not yet very familiar with JS callbacks, some code is expected. Thanks. EDIT I have tried to run from the console : $scope.$apply(function(){$http.post("http://picjboss.puma.lan:8880/fluxpousse/api/flow/createOrUpdateHeader", flowHeader).success(function(data){console.log("error "+data)}).error(function(data){console.log("error "+data)})}) It returns : undefined EDIT The post I am trying to solve generate an HTTP 400. • Is it a wise decision to go from dev to third line/Tier 3 dev support?

    - by dotnetdev
Hi, I am an experienced, mid-level developer. However, I recently spotted a job for a company which is small but has a lot of emphasis on training(beyond the basic technical training, but also mentoring, leadership training, etc). The role is 3rd line so still very technical. It's in app support so it's post implementation development rather than pure out-and-out development like I do now (or don't, as the senior devs do all of the interesting work). However, and this is the question - is this sort of career move common? Also, wouldn't a tech support role be a big shock to the system because I've never dealt with customers? I therefore think it's a bad move? Working in dev, I am used to the lack of customer contact and it is all filtered through by my manager. But in tech support, contacting customers/rude customers could be scary. I don't mind fixing other people's mistakes (better than me making mistakes!) and doing post-implementation dev for production systems (will give me a lot of discipline), and I do get bored sitting in the same place looking/talking to the same people in suits (I work in a corporate environment). The company puts A LOT of emphasis on training and prospects, which I don't get in the current (big) company I work at. Any advice on how to handle tech support is appreciated! Thanks

  • Git on Windows 7 expecting Linux? /dev/null not found error

    - by Klikini
I have installed git (not GitHub) on Windows 7 x64 Home Premium, and I cannot get it to work. Opening Git Bash outputs the following: Welcome to Git (version 1.9.4-preview20140815) Run 'git help git' to display the help index. Run 'get help <command>' to display help for specific commands. sh.exe": /dev/null: No such file or directory sh.exe": /dev/null: No such file or directory sh.exe": /dev/null: No such file or directory sh.exe": /dev/null: No such file or directory sh.exe": /dev/null: No such file or directory sh.exe": /dev/null: No such file or directory Andy@ANDY-DELL ~ $ If I open the Git GUI, I get a this box: Title: git-gui: fatal error Content: fatal: open /dev/null or dup failed: No such file or directory Git Gui requires Git 1.5.0 or later. I also tried GitHub for Windows, but I got an internet connection error when attempting to clone a repo, even though my connection is fine. Is this possibly related? I have learned so far that /dev/null is the Linux version of the Windows NUL, but why is it trying to do this on Windows? Thanks in advance.

  • Problem restoring from tar backup: why are there /dev/disk/by-id/ symlinks and how can I avoid them?

    - by SK.
Hello, I'm trying to make a bare-bone backup system with the most basic tools available on openSUSE 11.3 (in this case: bash, fdisk, tar & grub legacy) Here's the workflow for my scripts: backup.sh: (Run from external system, e.g. LiveCD) make an fdisk script ($fscript) from fdisk -l's output [works] mount the partitions from the system's fstab [works] tar the crucial stuff in file.tgz [works] restore.sh: (Run from external system, e.g. LiveCD) run fdisk $dest < $fscript to restore partitioning [works] format and mount partitions from system's fstab [fails] extract from file.tgz [works when mounting manually] restore grub [fails] I have recently noticed that openSUSE (though I'm sure it has nothing to do with the distro) has different output in /etc/fstab and /boot/grub/menu.lst, more precisely the partition name is for example "/dev/disk/by-id/numbers-brandname-morenumbers-part2" instead of "/dev/sda2" -- but it basically is a simple symlink. My questions about this: what is the point of such symlinks, especially if we're restoring on a different disk? is there a way to cleanly prevent the creation of those symlinks and use the "true" /dev/sdx everywhere instead? if the previous is no, do you know a way to replace those symlinks on the fly in a text file? I tried this script but only works if the file starts with the symlink description (case of fstab, not menu.lst): ### search and replace /dev/disk/by-id/... to /dev/sdx while read oldVolume rest; do # get first element, ignore rest of line if [[ "$oldVolume" =~ ^/dev/disk/by-id/.*(-part[0-9]*$)? ]]; then newVolume=$(readlink $oldVolume) # replace pointer by pointee, returns "../../sdx" echo /dev/${newVolume##*/} $rest >> TMP # format to "/dev/sdx", write line else echo $oldVolume $rest >> TMP # nothing to do fi done < $file mv -f TMP $file # save changes I've had trouble finding a solution to this on google so I was hoping some of the members here could help me. Thank you.
