  • Program menu disappeared

  • Clicking links in pdfs opened with Okular opens Abiword (instead of the default browser)

    I work with Xubuntu 12.04 and use Okular (version 0.14.3) to view pdf files. If I click a link in a pdf file (created with pdflatex using the hyperref package), Abiword is opened instead of my default browser google-chrome. How can I change this behavior? The settings in Okular do not seem to provide a solution. (Note that I set google-chrome as the preferred application for web browsing under Settings - Preferred Applications, so that's not the problem).

The search functionality offers a "Quicksearch" with a single search item and an "Advanced Search" for multiple search criteria. Sometimes it would be nice to have initial values for the search criteria, but this is not supplied by JHeadstart by default.

  • Program Installer Not Detecting Internet

    Hello I am trying to install a program through the Ubuntu Software Center. Every time I click install I get a Message stating "failed to download package files, check your Internet connection". I have tried different software installs and get the same message. I do have an Internet connection (hence being able to write this), I have restarted the computer and have reset the Internet (twice) but still get the same message. Any Ideas??

The square displays correctly as long as either x or y remain positive with respect to the original click position. If both x and y are negative with respect to the original click position, the square grows/shrinks, but also wanders about the screen. Is there a way to swap the origin point from top-left to bottom-right or to keep the square from wandering?

  • Problems with Program startup in WIn 7 this week

    I have a program (ISYS) that I have been using since 2006. It migrated successfully to Windows 7. Just yesterday it started manifesting this strange behavior. The program has a selector to allow you to select a directory that might have relevant files for the program. As of yesterday the program will only let me select folders on the C drive. For example I have a folder on D that I need to access with this program - from the GUI when I select the D drive the directory list does not load, instead it churns away using 17% of the CPU cycles. I have let it run for an hour several times. I have found that I can get the directory I want by using a batch file to start the program but this limits my ability to do certain things I really need to use the GUI. I did a number of reboots and other tests - I disconnected drives but once I try to select some directory on a drive other than C it churns away. I have experimented quite a bit and am convinced (which means I am wrong) that this has something to do with some setting change on my computer that I can't figure out as I don't see any updates. Since ISYS has not been updated I feel confident it is something internal. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Externally disabling signals for a Linux program.

    Hello, On Linux, is it possible to somehow disable signaling for programs externally... that is, without modifying their source code? Context: I'm calling a C (and also a Java) program from within a bash script on Linux. I don't want any interruptions for my bash script, and for the other programs that the script launches (as foreground processes). While I can use a... trap '' INT ... in my bash script to disable the Ctrl C signal, this works only when the program control happens to be in the bash code. That is, if I press Ctrl C while the C program is running, the C program gets interrupted and it exits! This C program is doing some critical operation because of which I don't want it be interrupted. The question is as follows: Question: Are the statistics sampled by default? Answer: Yes. The sampling rate can be specified by the user and it can be anywhere between a very low value to 100%. Let us do a small experiment to verify if the auto update on statistics is left on. Also, let’s examine a very large table that is created and statistics by default- whether the statistics are sampled or not. In this case, the sample rate is 100%. Before dropping the table, let us also check the size of the table. The size of the table is less than 4 MB. Let us compare the Result set just for a valid reference. Test 1: Total Rows: 1000000, Rows Sampled: 255420, Size of the Table: 35.516 MB Test 2: Total Rows: 100000, Rows Sampled: 100000, Size of the Table: 3.555 MB The reason behind the sample in the Test1 is that the data space is larger than 8 MB, and therefore it uses more than 1024 data pages. If the data space is smaller than 8 MB and uses less than 1024 data pages, then the sampling does not happen. Sampling aids in reducing excessive data scan; however, sometimes it reduces the accuracy of the data as well. Please note that this is just a sample test and there is no way it can be claimed as a benchmark test. The result can be dissimilar on different machines.
