  • Opening Excel 2007 to a specific worksheet from a file:// link

    Our internal website links to Excel files on a network-mapped drive. The links specify the filename and worksheet to open, in the following format (path and link information omitted): ExcelFileName#'SheetName'!$A$1 This works fine with Excel 2003, but we're moving to Excel 2007, which won't even open the file if that extra information is present. I haven't been able to find a definitive answer on whether this feature has been removed (or the syntax changed) in 2007. Any help will be highly appreciated!

  • excel truncating phone number

    I have a csv file that contains cells such as "+1.8882789780". When viewed in Excel, it loses the last digit possibly due to excel truncation. Is there a way to either change the setting in Excel to prevent this from happening or change the csv file in some way? One way is to wrap single quotes around the cell contents in addition to the double quotes. "'+1.8882789780'" Is there a better way?

    I'm copy-pasting some data from html table into excel. But excel automatically converts some text or number values to date! When I change the format, the number is perversed, the number is something like 4112523 (excel probably interprets the cell as date and then converts to number or something like that...) There is a trick for importing CSV files, but is there any solution when you are pasting your data directly from a web browser?

  • Excel chart: How to reverse the X axis of time series data

    In Excel 2003, I have a time series from a financial report that goes something like this: 2007 2006 2005 Amount 300 200 100 I want to create a graph of the time series that looks something like this (please excuse the ugly ascii graph): 300| .x | ... 200| .x.. | ... 100| x |____________________ 0 2005 2006 2007 But intead of getting an upward sloping graph, excel wants to put my time series in reverse (the way it actually appears in the spreadsheet). Is there any way to make excel display the x axis in reverse of the way it normally does? I've tried manually reversing the range in the chart dialog (changing a range of B1:D3 to D3:B1), but excel just puts it back.

  • Format Excel cells to display as '##:##:##'

    I'm trying to format cells in Excel so that they display the total duration of phone calls as hh:mm:ss, but Excel is giving me errors. Sometimes durations are only mm:ss (49:10), or even just ss (35), and I need them by default to change to 00:49:10 and 00:00:35 respectivly. However, when I select 'Custom' on the 'Number' tab when formatting the cells and enter either 00:00:00 or ##:##:##, Excel tells me - Microsoft Office Excel cannot use the number format you typed. Also, hh:mm:ss will not work for me, as I'm dealing in durations, not times. Is anyone able to tell me how do format this? Thanks.

  • Is it possible to use images in an Excel IF statement?

    Quite a simple one here, but I guess the answer will be a resounding no! I have a few symbols, basic clip-art, which I'd like to display depending on certain information. At the moment, I'm using this statement to display Y or N: =IF(B2>0,VLOOKUP(B2,'Student Data'!$A$2:$L$36,8),"") It's a simple lookup which checks another worksheet to see if someone has entered "Y" or "N" into the relevant column. What I'm wondering is this: would it be possible to display these clip-art images (I have them in .PNG format) instead of simple text? I.e. IF VALUE_OF_CELL=7, DISPLAY IMAGE1. Thanks in advance,

  • Excel DataFlow UML Viewer/Navigator/Visualiser tool/ hint

    Not sure what to call it but, is there a birds eye view tool for excel to show the data flow between excel sheets/cels etc? I have inherited some huge reports and looking at each cell to see where it's data comes from or what sheet/cell dependencies it has is a nightmare. Or even just something with excel that show the dependencies within a sheet of cells to each other etc. Or Any other visualization tool that can show the data flow between cells ( I tried visio but it seemed it is only for making diagrams of data not the data model of excel itself ). Or at least if I am within a cell and see a formula referring to other sheets and cells, is there a quick way to navigate there and back? Like code navigation in VS? Thank you for your help

    An excel document with several pivot and lookup tables that previously worked under office xp and 2003 stopped working after an upgrade to office 2007 (linked stuff doesn't update). I originally assumed there's something disabled in 2007 that I need to turn back on, but after having opened it in excel 2007 it no longer works in previous versions either. Any idea what I'm missing/what excel 2007 did?

    Consider a spreadsheet that starts looking like this: I want to be able to filter for Name 1 on the left column and have it look like this: Yes, I realize that the simple answer is to filter for Name 1 and Header, but I have other people using this spreadsheet that don't seem to get that. So, how can I make it foolproof for them and make it impossible to filter out the rows that have Header in the left column?

  • Ruby: Parse Excel 95-2003 files?

    Is there a way to read Excel 97-2003 files from Ruby? Background I'm currently using the Ruby Gem parseexcel -- http://raa.ruby-lang.org/project/parseexcel/ But it is an old port of the perl module. It works fine, but the latest format it parses is Excel 95. And guess what? Excel 2007 will not produce the Excel 95 format. John McNamara has taken over duties as the maintainer for the Perl Excel parser, see http://search.cpan.org/~jmcnamara/Spreadsheet-ParseExcel-0.55/lib/Spreadsheet/ParseExcel.pm The current version will parse Excel 95-2003 files. But is there a port to Ruby? My other thought is to build some Ruby to Perl glue code to enable use of the Perl library itself from Ruby.   • OpenXML SDK: Make Excel recalculate formula

    I update some cells of an Excel spreadsheet through the Microsoft Office OpenXML SDK 2.0. Changing the values makes all cells containing formula that depend on the changed cells invalid. However, due to the cached values Excel does not recalculate the formular, even if the user clicks on "Calculate now". What is the best way to invalidate all dependent cells of the whole workbook through the SDK? Update: In the meantime I have managed to make the code compile & run, and to remove the cached values on all sheets of the workbook. (See answers.) Still I am interested in better/alternative solutions, in particular how to only delete cached values of the cells that actually depend on the updated cell.

    This is a problem I have every once in a while, and it annoys me tremendously, beacuse I have always to recheck every trendline I get. An example: r L (mm) 30,00 97,0 60,00 103,2 90,00 106,0 110,00 101,0 125,00 88,0 140,00 62,0 148,00 36,7 152,50 17,0 Upon drawing a trendline (using 3rd order polynomial regression type) with r on the x axis, and L on the y one, Excel will give the formula y = -0,0002x³ + 0,0341x² - 1,8979x + 128,73 with R² = 0,994. If I interpolate values using that formula for the same values of r as the ones the formula was derived from, I get r y (mm) 30,00 97,083 60,00 94,416 90,00 88,329 110,00 66,371 125,00 33,68 140,00 -17,416 148,00 -53,5912 152,50 -76,97725 which are quite different? Why does this happen? What is the reason for it?

  • Excel Subtotal if adjacent column is not blank

    I'm trying to create a subtotal for a range that excludes rows that don't have a wholesale price. I have a range of products, prices and units that have subtotals by brand, although the brand subtotal is a sum and not a subtotal because the total needs to be displayed regardless of what the user chooses to filter. These subtotal rows do not have wholesale prices. Here is the sumif formula I'm using to calculate totals in the summary area above the range: =SUMIF(B5:B12, "", D5:D12) I need to have a subtotal formula that works the same way. Is there an equivalent to the sumif formula for subtotals? Or maybe a worksheet function I can use? I need to be able to do this without using VBA.

    I have two years of excel data showing daily share prices of a particular stock. I want to change those values to show percentage change (on a daily basis) from the zero date (ie the first day of the two year period). I know that the formula for showing daily percentage change would be (second day/first day -1) and that I can click and drag on that formula to extend over the rest of the two-year time period. The formula I want would be, basically, (each day/first day-1). Is there an easy way to automate the script so I dont have to type it out 730 times?

  • Refreshing imported MySQL data with MySQL for Excel

    Welcome to another blog post from the MySQL for Excel Team. Today we're going to talk about a new feature included since MySQL for Excel 1.3.0, you can install the latest GA or maintenance version using the MySQL Installer or optionally you can download directly any GA or non-GA version from the MySQL Developer Zone.As some users suggested in our forums we should be maintaining the link between tables and Excel not only when editing data through the Edit MySQL Data option, but also when importing data via Import MySQL Data. Before 1.3.0 this process only provided you with an offline copy of the Table's data into Excel and you had no way to refresh that information from the DB later on. Now, with this new feature we'll show you how easy is to work with the latest available information at all times. This feature is transparent to you (it doesn't require additional steps to work as long as the users had the Create an Excel Table for the imported MySQL table data option enabled. To ensure you have this option checked, click over Advanced Options... after the Import Data dialog is displayed). The current blog post assumes you already know how to import data into excel, you could always take a look at our previous post How To - Guide to Importing Data from a MySQL Database to Excel using MySQL for Excel if you need further reference on that topic. After importing Data from a MySQL Table into Excel, you can refresh the data in 3 ways.1. Simply right click over the range of the imported data, to show the pop-up menu: Click over the Refresh button to obtain the latest copy of the data in the table. 2. Click the Refresh button on the Data ribbon: 3. Click the Refresh All button in the Data ribbon (beware this will refresh all Excel tables in the Workbook): Please take a note of a couple of details here, the first one is about the size of the table. If by the time you refresh the table new columns had been added to it, and you originally have imported all columns, the table will grow to the right. The same applies to rows, if the table has new rows and you did not limit the results , the table will grow to to the bottom of the sheet in Excel. The second detail you should take into account is this operation will overwrite any changes done to the cells after the table was originally imported or previously refreshed: Now with this new feature, imported data remains linked to the data source and is available to be updated at all times.   • VBA + Polymorphism: Override worksheet functions from 3rd party

    my company makes extensive use of a data provider using a (closed source) VBA plugin. In principal, every query follows follows a certain structure: Fill one cell with a formula, where arguments to the formula specify the query the range of that formula is extended (not an arrray formula!) and cells below/right are filled with data For this to work, however, a user has to have a terminal program installed on the machine, as well as a com-plugin referenced in VBA/Excel. My Problem These Excelsheets are used and extended by multiple users, and not all of them have access to the data provider. While they can open the sheet, it will recalculate and the data will be gone. However, frequent recalculation is required. I would like every user to be able to use the sheets, without executing a very specific set of formulas. Attempts remove the reference on those computers where I do not have terminal access. This generates a NAME error i the cell containing the query (acceptable), but this query overrides parts of the data (not acceptable) If you allow the program to refresh, all data will be gone after a failed query Replace all formulas with the plain-text result in the respective cells (press a button and loop over every cell...). Obviously destroys any refresh-capabilities the querys offer for all subsequent users, so pretty bad, too. A theoretical idea, and I'm not sure how to implement it: Replace the functions offered by the plugin with something that will be called either first (and relay the query through to the original function, if thats available) or instead of the original function (by only deploying the solution on non-terminal machines), which just returns the original value. More specifically, if my query function is used like this: =GETALLDATA(Startdate, Enddate, Stockticker, etc) I would like to transparently swap the function behind the call. Do you see any hope, or am I lost? I appreciate your help. PS: Of course I'm talking about Bloomberg... Some additional points to clarify issues raise by Frank: The formula in the sheets may not be changed. This is mission-critical software, and its way too complex for any sane person to try and touch it. Only excel and VBA may be used (which is the reason for the previous point...) It would be sufficient to prevent execution of these few specific formulas/functions on a specific machine for all excel sheets to come This looks more and more like a problem for stackoverflow ;-)

  • How to get distance from point to line with distinction between side of line?

    I'm making a 2d racing game. I'm taking the nice standard approach of having a set of points defining the center of the track and detecting whether the car is off the track by detecting its distance from the nearest point. The nicest way I've found of doing this is using the formula: d = |Am + Bn + C| / sqrt(A^2 + B^2) Unfortunately, to have proper collision resolution, I need to know which side of the line the car is hitting, but I can't do that with this formula because it only returns positive numbers. So my question is: is there a formula that will give me positive or negative numbers based on which side of the line the point is on? Can I just get rid of the absolute value in the formula or do I need to do something else?
