  • Penalty clause on programming contract

    - by Everyone
I am considering the move to the other side of development, as a contract programmer. SO has given me a good few hints on the kind of figures to quote ( and why ), and a few points to bear in mind such as Non-competition and [IP Protection] Having worked as a programmer for a while, I know that a few reasons for deadline delays may be - Estimates can be all over the place both from the Contractor, and the Job provider Things like bandwidth bottlenecks, merge for high-impact code etc Clarification time on provided requirements... etc If you have worked as a contract programmer then How frequently do you encounter a penalty/forfeit clause in your agreement? What do you deem unacceptable in the penalty/forfeit clause?

  • Linux - Create ftp account with read/write access to only 1 folder

    - by Gublooo
Hey guys.... I have never worked on linux and dont plan on working on it either - The only command I probably know is "ls" :) I am hosting my website on Eapps and use their cpanel to setup everything so never worked with linux. Now I have this one time case - where I need to provide access to a contractor to fix the CSS issues on my website. He basically needs FTP (read/write) access to certain folders. At a high level - this is my code structure /home/webadmin/example.com/html/images /css /js /login.php /facebook.php /home/webadmin/example.com/application/library /views /models /controllers /config /bootstrap.php /home/webadmin/example.com/cgi-bin I want the new user to be able to have access to only these folders /home/webadmin/example.com/html/js /home/webadmin/example.com/html/css /home/webadmin/example.com/application/views He should not be able to view even the content of other folders including files like bootstrap.php or login.php etc If any sys admins can help me set this account up - will really appreciate it. Thanks

  • How to debug Sharepoint solution/feature through Visual studio ?

    - by pointlesspolitics
Recently I tried to install a webpart through wspbuilder utility to the Sharepoint Site. I have created, built and deployed a project to the 12 hive. After that installed the solution through Cental Administration Site and activated in the site collection. I just wonder how can I debug the complex feature/solution ? Because both processes (build-deploy and activate) totally independent, how can I attach a process with the worker process ?

  • What is the best way to run a loop of regressions in R?

    - by stevejb
Assume that I have sources of data X and Y that are indexable, say matrices. And I want to run a set of independent regressions and store the result. My initial approach would be results = matrix(nrow=nrow(X), ncol=(2)) for(i in 1:ncol(X)) { matrix[i,] = coefficients(lm(Y[i,] ~ X[i,]) } But, loops are bad, so I could do it with lapply as out <- lapply(1:nrow(X), function(i) { coefficients(lm(Y[i,] ~ X[i,])) } ) Is there a better way to do this?

  • Controlled execution of computationally expensive tasks

    - by Sergio
Say you have an application where a user is typing some text and as she types you'd want to perform some expensive computations in the background (related to the text that is being typed). Although you would like to do lots of things, your main priority is that the system responsiveness stay at acceptable levels so the user doesn't notice such a heavy load. Is there a way (ideally platform/language independent) to control what algorithms should be executed in the background based on the system load and responsiveness?

  • SQL server text

    - by Nick P
I will be taking an independent study class on SQL server management. I will have to configure SQL Server 2008 on a Windows Server 2008 system. I was wondering if anyone could suggest decent text for configuration/administration of SQL Server 2008. The Murach text doesn't look like it will take me far.

  • Is it a good idea to mock/stub in integration tests?

    - by ez
Say there are multiple requests in a integration test, some of them are sphinx calls(locator for example). Should we just stub out the entire response of these sphinx call, or, since it is a integration test, we want to excise the entire test without stubbing. If that is the case, how do we still keep test independent in the situation when sphinx fails, no internet connection, or third party server non-responsive. Give reasons. Thanks

  • Castle WCF DefaultServiceHostFactory in IIS: Accessing the ServiceHost

    - by user250837
I am attempting to move from a self hosting architecture to hosting under IIS 6, primarily to take advantage of built in dynamic compression. I am using the Castle DefaultServiceHostFactory to provide the service to IIS in the .svc file. However, I need to programmatically specify certain end points and behaviours and I do not know how to retrieve the current ServiceHost. Is this be possible, or should I just look at other methods of compression independent of IIS?

  • STA threads with SQLXMLBULKLOAD

    - by Christopher
If I have N STA .NET Threads each performing an independent bulk load operation on a different database using the SQLXMLBulkLoad dll (which requires calling threads to be STA), is it possible for all bulk loads to be happening at the same time, or are they implicitly serialized due to the STA COM configuration? Thanks!

  • Ruby / rubyzip alternative capable of handling rar/tar/zip/7z?

    - by Nick Gorbikoff
I was wondering if anyone knows of rubyzip alternatives for Ruby, that can handle various formats in particular zip / rar / 7z? I know of libarchive, but it's not complete for my purposes ( it's a good gem thou). (To clarify, libarchive - won't work for me - cause I need to be able to run in on Windows. ( Yeah I know sucks to be me)) Right now I end up running system commands to the os, but I'd like something OS independent, and capable of handling those formats - reading and writing. Thank you

  • Looking for a good Delphi unicode string library

    - by volvox
Any suggestion for a good unicode string library for Delphi 2010? Such thing as class that would contain a collection of independent functions, basically an encapsulation of functions that manipulate strings (ex: Trimlike, Character removal, Positional, Sub-string, Compare, Informational, Case, Replacement, Manipulation functions etc. ). Thanks

  • graph algorithms on GPU

    - by scatman
the current GPU threads are somehow limited (memory limit, limit of data structures, no recursion...). do you think it would be feasible to implement a graph theory problem on GPU. for example vertex cover? dominating set? independent set? max clique?.... is it also feasible to have branch-and-bound algorithms on GPUs? Recursive backtracking?

  • Destructor - does it get called if the app crashes

    - by Antonio Nakic Alfirevic
Does a destructor get called if the app crashes? If it's an unhandled exception I'm guessing it does, but what about more serious errors, or something like a user killing the application process? And a few more potentially dumb questions: what happens to all the objects in an app when the app exits and all finalizers have been executed - do the objects get garbage collected or are they somehow all "unloaded" with the process or appdomain? is the garbage collector part of each application (runs in the same process) or is it independent?

  • Mapping one to one foreign key relationships in Entity Framework 4.0?

    - by John K.
Hello all, I'm sure I'm missing something very simple, but let's say I have two entities, Employee and EmployeeType. Employee type would contain values like 'Full time', 'Contractor', 'Intern', etc. An Employee entity would contain one, and only one EmployeeType value. So I am designing a new .edmx model using the Model-First approach and generating my actual sql server data schema from the model. I want to add an integer type foreign key id into my Employee entity, EmployeeTypeId, which will map to the primary key of the EmployeeType entity. So I've gone ahead and done that in my Employee entity. Where I'm stuck is how, though the Entity Framework designer, to enforce the 1:1 referential constraint on that EmployeeTypeId property? Or does the EF handle that automatically behind the scenes? thanks in advance, John

  • Code understanding, reverse engineering, best concepts and tools. Java.

    - by core07
One of most demanding tasks for any programmer, architect is understanding other's code. E.g. I am contractor, hired to rescue some project very quickly. Fix bugs, plan global refactoring and therefore I need most efficient way to understand the code. What is the list of concepts, their priority and best tools for this? Of what I know: reverse code engineering to create object models (creating of diagram per package is not so convenient), create sequence diagrams (the tool connects in debug mode to the system and generates diagrams from runtime). Some visualizing techniques, using some tools to work not just with .java but also with e.g. JPA implementors like Hibernate. Generate diagram for not all the codebase, but add some class and then classes used by it. Is Sparx Enterprise Architect state of the art in reverse engineering or far from that. Any other better tools? Ideally would be that tool makes me understand the code as if I wrote it myself :)

  • How to add a context processor from a Django app

    - by Edan Maor
Say I'm writing a Django app, and all the templates in the app require a certain variable. The "classic" way to deal with this, afaik, is to write a context processor and add it to TEMPLATE_CONTEXT_PROCESSORS in the settings.py. My question is, is this the right way to do it, considering that apps are supposed to be "independent" from the actual project using them? In other words, when deploying that app to a new project, is there any way to avoid the project having to explicitly mess around with its settings?

  • iPhone OS SDK: Possible to download SDK 3.0 w/o Xcode?

    - by Cirrostratus
I recently downloaded the iPhone SDK 4 along with Xcode and neglected to install 3.0 and 3.1. I've since deleted the install package. I of course can re-download the whole package, but for future reference, I wonder if you are able to download individual SDK versions separately and independent of Xcode, like you would with almost any open source package.

  • Non-blocking MySQL updates with java?

    - by justkevin
For a multiplayer game I'm working on I'd like to record events to the mysql database without blocking the game update thread so that if the database is busy or a table is locked the game doesn't stop running while it waits for a write. What's the best way to accomplish this? I'm using c3p0 to manage the database connection pool. My best idea so far is to add query update strings to a synchronized list with an independent thread checking the list every 100ms and executing the queries it finds there.
