• 12.04 backlight issue for Acer Aspire 5734z-4725 running on usb flash drive

  I have followed the fix found here: Backlight Issue However I can't use the sudo update-grub2 command as it errors with /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?). As this laptop's hard drive is shot, I can't install the OS. I have been able to get it to temporarily work with sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=00. I'm new to Ubuntu, so if you know how to fix this please provided as much detail to what I would need to do.

• Benefit of running redis as a daemon

  I'm trying to understand what the benefit of running redis as a daemon is. The redis default configuration seems not to run redis as a daemon, but locally on Mac OS X I added it to LaunchAgents, so I'm guessing it is running as a daemon anyway? Also on my remote application which is running on a linux server, since it won't have LaunchAgents (as far as I'm aware) will I have to run redis as a daemon? What will be the benefit of doing so?

• Running out of LowMem with Ubuntu PAE Kernel and 32GB of RAM

  I'm running a Java data import process on a 32-bit Ubuntu 10 PAE kernel machine. After running the process for a while, the oom-killer zaps my Java process. After some Googling and digging through docs, it looks like the system is running out of LowMem. I started the process for the third time and am watching free -lm show me Low: 464 386 77 with the free value (77MB) slowly decreasing. Why am I running out of lowmem and how do I increase it? • Running a Screen instance of a program as non-root

  I've got a dedicated server (Ubuntu 12.04, no GUI) set up to launch an instance of McMyAdmin and attach it to a screen instance every time I reboot the hardware. I have the command saved to root's crontab as: @reboot cd /var/MC_SVR && screen -dmS McMyAdmin ./MCMA2_Linux_x86_64 Problem being, though, I have a user set up specifically for FTP access to the server files so I don't always have to SSH into the machine. Since the server is being started as a root process, all the files it makes are, obviously, set with root as the owner. So I chown'd all the files and set them to ftpuser. Now I'm stuck with trying to get the process to start as ftpuser. I've tried doing the following but to no avail: cd /var/MC_SVR && su ftpuser - -c 'screen -dmS McMyAdmin ./MCMA2_Linux_x86_64' I try this in terminal and I get no errors or anything (in fact I never get anything unless it's a syntax error from su), but there's no screen instance to access and so I can assume the server never starts. So, what am I doing wrong? Or am I just not accessing the screen instance correctly since it's (supposed) to be launched by another user?

• wrong kernel running after install

  I have installed Ubuntu 14.04 from unetbootin. When it reboots after the install, uname -r says: 3.5.0-17-generic ..this means that no modules have loaded for the kernel that is actually installed (3.13.0-32-generic). Does anyone know why this kernel should be installed via the install process? Is it an artifact of using Unetbootin? Booting into the Unetbootin image gives the correct kernel, and thus the modules load. Knowing why is one thing, but I'm not sure how to remedy it now. Because no modules are loaded, I can't connect to the network or connect a USB drive. I've tried update-grub, which seems to find the correct kernel, but doesn't seem to tell the system to boot from it. I've also tried selecting the kernel at boot time using the "Advanced Options for Ubuntu", and the 3.13.x kernel is the only one listed. Selecting this lead to the 3.5.x kernel stubbornly loading.. I'm a fairly accomplished sysadmin, but this one has me flummoxed :) Can anyone help?

• Can you help diagnose why this laptop running ubantu has crashed and seemingly died

  Love any suggestions you have to this problem. My laptop had Window Vista on previously (sorry). Something went wrong, I can't remember, and I tried to reinstall but couldn't, installed a replacement second hand HD, and installed Ubantu instead. It worked ok for a little while, before crashing. I ended up reloading Ubantu three times. It works for a while after (say 3-5 hrs of domestic web browsing), and then crashes. When I turn it on now, it comes up with some options to restart in safe mode, run tests and so on. I can't get it to start normally. I'm not going to re-install again. Below are screen shots of what happens when I follow some of these test options. These screen shots mean nothing to me. Any ideas? • Moving away from PHP and running towards server-side JavaScript [on hold]

  I've decided to start moving away from PHP and server-side JavaScript looks like an attractive replacement. However, I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around how others are using Node.js for web applications. I'm currently using Lighttpd with FastCGI PHP. The one thing I like about PHP is that I can "inline" my scripts in the document like so: <?php echo 'Hello, World!'; ?> My question is: Is there any server-side JavaScript solution that I can use in this manor? For instance, I'd love to be able to do this: <?js print('Hello, World!'); ?> Is there such a thing? I'm not looking for opinions about "which is better". Therefore, I need just a very minimal core OS that can support virtualbox as there will no usage of core OS other than start up the virtualbox. Any OS that is suitable for this situation?   I'm dual booting Windows 7/Ubuntu 12.04. I want to run C++/Java projects from a NTFS partition, where I keep generally all my files and projects. I fiddled with the fstab. One time I removed 'noexec', the other I changed it to 'exec'. After that,each time, I remounted the partition and it still didn't work. I tried using sudo mount -o remount,exec /media/mypartition It didn't work either. There was a somewhat similar question already, but it didn't have the proper answer for me or I didn't know how to make it work(note: I am a total newbie with Ubuntu and Linux in general).

• Running an Application on a Different Domain

  Were I am contracting at right now has a new development domain.  Because of IT security rules it is fairly isolated from the domain my computer normally logs into (for e-mail and such).  I do use a VM to log directly into the domain but one of my co-workers found this command to run things on your box but in the other domain.  Pretty cool. For example this runs SQL Server Management Tool for SQL Server 2008: runas /netonly /user:{domain}\{username} "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE\ssms.exe" And this runs visual studios: runas /netonly /user:{domain}\{username} "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" It does not solve the problem I wanted to solve which would be to be able to assign Users/Groups in Team Explorer.  It instead still uses the domain I am logged into's groups.

• Weird bug in Visual Studio 11 Beta when running on Windows 8

  With the Windows 8 Consumer Preview version out in the open and the Visual Studio 11 Beta also available, I’ve been putting some more effort into trying them both out. The first impression of the new Visual Studio 11 build was: Why doesn’t it work at all on Windows 8?! The issues I encountered were odd to say the least. Visual Studio did install correctly, which was a good sign, but when I started it, I was greeted with a multitude of popups each telling me that some package could not be loaded. So I clicked away for quite some time to finally be greeted by the new default visual style of Visual Studio. The next thing I wanted to do was start a new project so I pressed “New Project” and got the “Microsoft.VisualStudio.Dialogs.DialogInitializationException” exception. After some pondering and even submitting a bug report I found another already reported bug “http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/727578/vs-do-not-work-with-finnish-number-format-on-w8-64-bit”. It turns out that the dialog initialization failure has something to do with the packages no being loaded and following the presented workaround helped. The trick is to change the negative number sign to “-“ (U+002D) from the additional settings of your regional settings. This issue appears to have a wider reach than just Visual Studio as I heard at TechDays Finland 2012 that the same fix has to be made when using Hyper-V.

• Steam not displaying text on wine 1.5 running on Ubuntu 12.04

  Hello fellow dwellers of askubuntu, as the title says I'm having difficulties with getting Steam to run properly. I think I have the solution but I am pretty incompetent with Ubuntu (just started using it the other day) so a step by step process would be unbelievably appreciated! Any useful input is what I'm hoping for but for the brave soul who feels like typing a bit more, perhaps a step-by-step list of instructions starting from downloading Steam off the official website, would be my saving grace. If there is any more info you guys need let me know and I'll of course be happy to oblige!

• No Launcher or bars on desktop when running from a VPS

  I'm using tightVNC on Ubuntu 12.10 and can see and change the desktop background pic. I can also press f3 to get a file viewer. But there is no topbar or left side launcher. I do not think its an nvidia problem because I'm using a VPS and I logon remotely. I've tried so many variations of /root/.vnc/xstartup such as gnome-session &, or gnome-session –-session=gnome-classic &, my head is spinning. I've seen other people have this issue and was wondering if anyone solved it.
