• Which Windows 8 edition should I update to from Windows 7 Home Premium?

  I have Windows 7 Home Premium on my laptop, need to upgrade to Windows 8. If there were a Windows 8 Home Premium midway between those two I would've chosen that... but there are only two Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro, so I'm a bit confused, as I don't want the former to be like Windows 7 Basic. My usage is mostly coding, game development, mid-performance gaming and some benchmarking and video editing. Your recommendations please?

• Better graphics or better cpu on a budget laptop.

  Which would have better overall performance on a cheap (~$600) laptop; Intel Atom 330 with Nvidia ion or intel Pentium/Celeron with Intel graphics. I don't need 8 hour battery life and will hopefully be using this for programming/web browsing and occasionally light gaming.

• HDD Producing high pithched beep noise

  Recently I had an upgrade on one of my PC I added a 512Mb Nvidia Graphic card and 500GB seagate 7200Rpm HDD, Now the new HDD is producing a high pitched squeek/beep i cant really tell and on reboot my XP sector 63 gets corrupted, so I get reboot error. I gave the HDD for replacement but the replaced one too makes the noice, yet the HDD does not produce sound on my gaming rig.

• Is there a Chrome extension to swap out CSS?

  I'm trying to completely replace the CSS for a domain with different CSS (i.e. swap out the CSS at gaming.SE for that of Stack Overflow). I'd ideally like an extension that lets me do this. I've used Personalized Web, which allows loading in CSS for a given domain, but it still loads the original CSS (you can specify CSS to ignore, but you have to do this rule by rule! Does anyone know of a way of doing this?

  These are my requirements: Can support latest DirectX/OpenGL standards Dual DVI output required Less than $100 Does not need to excel at gaming Does need to provide hardware acceleration for Windows 7 and Visual Studio 2010 via WPF. Bonus points: Supported in OSx86 land. Quiet and low power. I tend to lean towards nvidia because I'm used to their drivers and their software (nview, etc.)

  Here is my Windows 7 Experience Index using the stock graphics driver: And after installing the newest driver Forceware 197.45, it becomes: The only change is that the "Gaming graphics" subscore drops from 6.4 to 5.2. Is the stock graphic driver more optimized for Windows 7? Or is Forceware 197.45 buggy? Should I revert back to the stock driver? On my computer, I also have a dedicated graphics card (an Nvidia 310). No serious gaming stuff, I know - just for programming.   I'm stuck between ´eVGA GTX 550 Ti 1GB Super OC´ and ´eVGA GTX460 SE 1GB SuperClocked OC´. I know that 460 is better in performance, but does the 550 Ti has any newer feature, which makes it better? I'll mostly use it for HD movies and HD gaming (skyrim, la noire).   I have a dual monitor setup on my GTX 460. I'd like to use the integrated graphics combo of my P7H55-PRO + I3 550 to display a 3rd monitor. This won't be used for gaming, just for more work space. Is it possible? The integrated display adapter won't show up in the device manager at all. The monitor is plugged in and powered, and working, but doesn't show up in display settings. • NSData's writeToFile method failing with server address

I am trying to write an NSData object to a directory like so; [myData writeToFile:[NSString stringWithFormat:@"%@/%@.txt", path, filename] atomically:YES]; I receive no errors or warnings but I am assuming the write fails because the path variable has the format of afp://10.0.0.20/username/Desktop. I am connected to the networked share. Do I need to modify the string or take a different approach here? TIA, Ricky.

• How do I aggregate activerecord model data for a specific time period?

  I'm collecting data from a system every ~10s (this time difference varies due to communication time with networked devices). I'd like to calculate averages and sums of the stored values for this activerecord model on a daily basis. All records are stored in UTC. What's the correct way to sum and average values for, e.g., the previous day from midnight to midnight EST? I can do this in sql but don't know the "rails way" to make this calculation.

How do I A) know where hadoop is writing to on the local disk and B) change that For initial testing I setup HDFS on a 20gb linux VM - to it we've added a 500gb networked drive for moving towards prototyping the full system. So now how do I point HDFS at that drive, or do I simply move the home directory/install with some slight change in setup and restart the process?

  I understand how the relation between issuer and subject certificates enables verification of the subject's authenticity. If I connect to a networked device, and it sends me its certificate to identify itself, then I can verify that it was issued by a trusted party and that it has not been tampered with in any way. However, suppose I simply upload this certificate onto another device. Then what prevents me from having this device identify itself with the copied certificate?

• Enumerate printers on a Mac

  So, I'm familiar how to enumerate the printers using the Windows API, there are a ton of examples out there. What I gathered from here is that I can find the printers in the /Library/Printers/ directory. When I searched there, I found more folders which didn't really mean anything to me. To keep it simple, how do I query the mac to get a list of printers (local and networked) "attached" to the system? Or can anyone point me in the right direction?
