  • Flipping an image using a one dimensional array of characters.

    I have the data of an image loaded into memory as a one dimensional array. Since I'm trying to use OpenGL to draw it, and since it reads from the bottom up, I want to try and flip the elements of the array before they're sent to OpenGL. Maybe there's a way to tell OpenGL to read from the top to the bottom? Anyways, I tried using a few methods of sorting arrays and they also flip the image horizontally, which is very much like the original problem. So can I flip the data only one way?

  • Exploring the Excel Services REST API

    Over the last few years Analysis Services guru Chris Webb and I have been on something of a crusade to enable better access to data that is locked up in countless Excel workbooks that litter the hard drives of enterprise PCs. The most prominent manifestation of that crusade up to now has been a forum thread that Chris began on Microsoft Answers entitled Excel Web App API? Chris began that thread with: I was wondering whether there was an API for the Excel Web App? Specifically, I was wondering if it was possible (or if it will be possible in the future) to expose data in a spreadsheet in the Excel Web App as an OData feed, in the way that it is possible with Excel Services? Up to recently the last 10 words of that paragraph "in the way that it is possible with Excel Services" had completely washed over me however a comment on my recent blog post Thoughts on ExcelMashup.com (and a rant) by Josh Booker in which Josh said: Excel Services is a service application built for sharepoint 2010 which exposes a REST API for excel documents. We're looking forward to pros like you giving it a try now that Office365 makes sharepoint more easily accessible.  Can't wait for your future blog about using REST API to load data from Excel on Offce 365 in SSIS. made me think that perhaps the Excel Services REST API is something I should be looking into and indeed that is what I have been doing over the past few days. And you know what? I'm rather impressed with some of what Excel Services' REST API has to offer. Unfortunately Excel Services' REST API also has one debilitating aspect that renders this blog post much less useful than it otherwise would be; namely that it is not publicly available from the Excel Web App on SkyDrive. Therefore all I can do in this blog post is show you screenshots of what the REST API provides in Sharepoint rather than linking you directly to those REST resources; that's a great shame because one of the benefits of a REST API is that it is easily and ubiquitously demonstrable from a web browser. Instead I am hosting a workbook on Sharepoint in Office 365 because that does include Excel Services' REST API but, again, all I can do is show you screenshots. N.B. If anyone out there knows how to make Office-365-hosted spreadsheets publicly-accessible (i.e. without requiring a username/password) please do let me know (because knowing which forum on which to ask the question is an exercise in futility). In order to demonstrate Excel Services' REST API I needed some decent data and for that I used the World Tourism Organization Statistics Database and Yearbook - United Nations World Tourism Organization dataset hosted on Azure Datamarket (its free, by the way); this dataset "provides comprehensive information on international tourism worldwide and offers a selection of the latest available statistics on international tourist arrivals, tourism receipts and expenditure" and you can explore the data for yourself here. If you want to play along at home by viewing the data as it exists in Excel then it can be viewed here. Let's dive in.   The root of Excel Services' REST API is the model resource which resides at: http://server/_vti_bin/ExcelRest.aspx/Documents/TourismExpenditureInMillionsOfUSD.xlsx/model Note that this is true for every workbook hosted in a Sharepoint document library - each Excel workbook is a RESTful resource. (Update: Mark Stacey on Twitter tells me that "It's turned off by default in onpremise Sharepoint (1 tickbox to turn on though)". Thanks Mark!) The data is provided as an ATOM feed but I have Firefox's feed reading ability turned on so you don't see the underlying XML goo. As you can see there are four top level resources, Ranges, Charts, Tables and PivotTables; exploring one of those resources is where things get interesting. Let's take a look at the Tables Resource: http://server/_vti_bin/ExcelRest.aspx/Documents/TourismExpenditureInMillionsOfUSD.xlsx/model/Tables Our workbook contains only one table, called ‘Table1’ (to reiterate, you can explore this table yourself here). Viewing that table via the REST API is pretty easy, we simply append the name of the table onto our previous URI: http://server/_vti_bin/ExcelRest.aspx/Documents/TourismExpenditureInMillionsOfUSD.xlsx/model/Tables('Table1') As you can see, that quite simply gives us a representation of the data in that table. What you cannot see from this screenshot is that this is pure HTML that is being served up; that is all well and good but actually we can do more interesting things. If we specify that the data should be returned not as HTML but as: http://server/_vti_bin/ExcelRest.aspx/Documents/TourismExpenditureInMillionsOfUSD.xlsx/model/Tables('Table1')?$format=image then that data comes back as a pure image and can be used in any web page where you would ordinarily use images. This is the thing that I really like about Excel Services’ REST API – we can embed an image in any web page but instead of being a copy of the data, that image is actually live – if the underlying data in the workbook were to change then hitting refresh will show a new image. Pretty cool, no? The same is true of any Charts or Pivot Tables in your workbook - those can be embedded as images too and if the underlying data changes, boom, the image in your web page changes too. There is a lot of data in the workbook so the image returned by that previous URI is too large to show here so instead let’s take a look at a different resource, this time a range: http://server/_vti_bin/ExcelRest.aspx/Documents/TourismExpenditureInMillionsOfUSD.xlsx/model/Ranges('Data!A1|C15') That URI returns cells A1 to C15 from a worksheet called “Data”: And if we ask for that as an image again: http://server/_vti_bin/ExcelRest.aspx/Documents/TourismExpenditureInMillionsOfUSD.xlsx/model/Ranges('Data!A1|C15')?$format=image Were this image resource not behind a username/password then this would be a live image of the data in the workbook as opposed to one that I had to copy and upload elsewhere. Nonetheless I hope this little wrinkle doesn't detract from the inate value of what I am trying to articulate here; that an existing image in a web page can be changed on-the-fly simply by inserting some data into an Excel workbook. I for one think that that is very cool indeed! I think that's enough in the way of demo for now as this shows what is possible using Excel Services' REST API. Of course, not all features work quite how I would like and here is a bulleted list of some of my more negative feedback: The URIs are pig-ugly. Are "_vti_bin" & "ExcelRest.aspx" really necessary as part of the URI? Would this not be better: http://server/Documents/TourismExpenditureInMillionsOfUSD.xlsx/Model/Tables(‘Table1’) That URI provides the necessary addressability and is a lot easier to remember. Discoverability of these resources is not easy, we essentially have to handcrank a URI ourselves. Take the example of embedding a chart into a blog post - would it not be better if I could browse first through the document library to an Excel workbook and THEN through the workbook to the chart/range/table that I am interested in? Call it a wizard if you like. That would be really cool and would, I am sure, promote this feature and cut down on the copy-and-paste disease that the REST API is meant to alleviate. The resources that I demonstrated can be returned as feeds as well as images or HTML simply by changing the format parameter to ?$format=atom however for some inexplicable reason they don't return OData and no-one on the Excel Services team can tell me why (believe me, I have asked). $format is an OData parameter however other useful parameters such as $top and $filter are not supported. It would be nice if they were. Although I haven't demonstrated it here Excel Services' REST API does provide a makeshift way of altering the data by changing the value of specific cells however what it does not allow you to do is add new data into the workbook. Google Docs allows this and was one of the motivating factors for Chris Webb's forum post that I linked to above. None of this works for Excel workbooks hosted on SkyDrive This blog post is as long as it needs to be for a short introduction so I'll stop now.   • Sprites are sometimes blurry in Flash

    I am playing around with drawing an SVG sprite (imported in through [Embed]). Depending on the coordinates of the image, sometimes it appears more crisp than others. The following image shows how at different locations is it rendered differently: (Image link - You may have to download and zoom in with an image editor to see it) You'll notice that the middle sprite is more blurry than the ones on the sides. Does anyone know why this is? Any help would be appreciated.

  • Customize the Background in Boxee

    Are you a Boxee user who thinks the default background is little boring? Today we’ll take a look at how to freshen up the look of Boxee by changing the background. Boxee Background When you log into Boxee, select the Settings button at the upper left corner of the Home page.   Select General on the Settings screen. When you select or hover your mouse over the Background Image button, you’ll see options to set a background image or set a background image folder. You’ll have the option of settings a single static image as your background, or choosing an images folder.   If you choose a folder, Boxee will rotate through the images in the folder. To set Background images folder, select that option. Browse for your image folder.. And then select OK.   Boxee will rotate through the images in the folder.   Images will change every ten seconds.   If you prefer a single static image, select Set background image   Choose a image and select OK. Now just enjoy you nice new backgrounds.   If you ever wish to revert back to the default Boxee background, simply select Reset Images on the Settings \ General screen. Adding your own backgrounds is a nice way to customize your Boxee experience. Ideally, you’ll want to choose high resolution images and images oriented as landscape rather than portrait.   • Precise Touch Screen Dragging Issue: Trouble Aligning with the Finger due to Different Screen Resolution

    Please, I need your help. I'm trying to make a game that will drag-n-drop a sprite/image while my finger follows precisely with the image without being offset. When I'm trying on a 900x1280 (in X [900] and Y [1280]) screen resolution of the Google Nexus 7 tablet, it follows precisely. However, if I try testing on a phone smaller than 900x1280, my finger and the image won't aligned properly and correctly except it still dragging. This is the code I used for making a sprite dragging with my finger under touchDragged(): x = ((screenX + Gdx.input.getX())/2) - (fruit.width/2); y = ((camera_2.viewportHeight * multiplier) - ((screenY + Gdx.input.getY())/2) - (fruit.width/2)); This code above will make the finger and the image/sprite stays together in place while dragging but only works on 900x1280. You'll be wondering there's camera_2.viewportHeight in my code. Here are for two reasons: to prevent inverted drag (e.g. when you swipe with your finger downwards, the sprite moves upward instead) and baseline for reading coordinate...I think. Now when I'm adding another orthographic camera named camera_1 and changing its setting, I recently used it for adjusting the falling object by meter per pixel. Also, it seems effective independently for smartphones that has smaller resolution and this is what I used here: show() camera_1 = new OrthographicCamera(); camera_1.viewportHeight = 280; // --> I set it to a smaller view port height so that the object would fall faster, decreasing the chance of drag force. camera_1.viewportWidth = 196; // --> Make it proportion to the original screen view size as possible. camera_1.position.set(camera_1.viewportWidth * 0.5f, camera_1.viewportHeight * 0.5f, 0f); camera_1.update(); touchDragged() x = ((screenX + (camera_1.viewportWidth/Gdx.input.getX()))/2) - (fruit.width/2); y = ((camera_1.viewportHeight * multiplier) - ((screenY + (camera_1.viewportHeight/Gdx.input.getY()))/2) - (fruit.width/2)); But the result instead of just following the image/sprite closely to my finger, it still has a space/gap between the sprite/image and the finger. It is possibly dependent on coordinates based on the screen resolution. I'm trying to drag the blueberry sprite with my finger. My expectation did not met since I want my finger and the sprite/image (blueberry) to stay close together while dragging until I release it. Here's what it looks like: I got to figure it out how to make independent on all screen sizes by just following the image/sprite closely to my finger while dragging even on most different screen sizes instead.

    There is this tutorial in imagemagick http://www.imagemagick.org/Usage/masking/#masks I was wondering if there was some way to mimic the behavior (like cutting the image up based on a black image mask that turns image parts transparent... ) and then trim that image in game... trying to hack around with the webcam feature and reproduce some of the imagemagick opencv stuff in it in Unity but I am saddly unequipped with masks, shaders etc in unity skill/knowledge. Not even sure where to start.

  • How easy is it to migrate a Linux VM image from one VM env to another?

    If I stick to one of the standard, well-supported VM disk images (like a raw image, or VDI, VMDK, ...), are Linux VMs typically easy to move between VM environments? E.g., between (say) VirtualBox and KVM, or VMWare and Xen? I'm talking here of fully virtualized environments, not paravirtualization requiring support within the guest OS. It seems to me that the kernels in most Linux distributions these days are configured to...keep an open mind and detect things at boot time, so you don't have the issue that you sometimes have moving a Windows VM from one virtualization system to another (I'm thinking particularly of HAL issues that Windows has, like ACPI vs. non-ACPI; I've also just had Windows VMs generally acting strangely when moved from VMWare to VirtualBox, for instance). I'm looking for a general answer, but if it helps, specifically I'm mostly going to be doing this with Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and 10.04 LTS guests. But that could change.

    I want to change the style of the Windows 8 Start Screen: Under Charmsbar > Settings > More PC Settings > Personalize > Start Screen you can choose out of 20 predefined background images and between 25 predefined color schemes: How can you specify your own custom Windows 8 Start Background Image and Color Scheme? There were multiple Tools for the preview version like Windows 8 UI Tweaker or My WCP Start Screen Customizer, however none of them seem to work in the final release version of Windows 8.

  • Can the Gimp split an image into multiple images?

    I've been scanning a lot of photos recently, more than one at a time. I now have multiple jpegs, each containing multiple photos. Can I, using Gimp, "split" a jpg into 3 smaller files ? What I used to do is : copy the jpg 3 times, and crop a different picture in each copy. There must be an easier way to do this ! EDIT : Is there a plugin that can do that ? I've looked around, but only found plugins that "cut" an image into pieces of equal size.

  • Image file can't be opened by windows store app if the file is in the Ext4's external hard disk

    My question is described below: I have two disks, external hard disk and removable disk. They are formatted with EXT4. I put the same image in the disks, and use Ext2Fsd to mount the disks. I open the file in win8, and it will default open by the windows store app : photos. It will be success to open if the file is in the Ext4's removable disk. It will be failed to open if the file is in the Ext4's external hard disk. I don't know why it will be failed to open if the file is in the Ext4's external hard disk. Does anyone have similar experiences?

  • Hosting provider that allows you to host your own VM image?

    I've already looked at the 'Best Hosted VM Provider' question and checked the recommendations there, but I seem to have slightly odd requirements. Basically, I am looking for a host that allows me to host a VM image I supply (FreeBSD, which most of the suggested hosters don't support, they only seem to support various Linuxes) instead of one of their standard images. I'm a long time BSD user and have had colo BSD servers in the past so I'm pretty sure that i don't need much in the way of software support, but I'd basically like to run my server on managed hardware without having to rent the whole server. For the usage I have that would way OTT as we're talking a couple of small apps with very few users, a couple of blogs and (most importantly) email hosting for about 6-10 domains with moderate traffic levels. Oh, and reliability trumps cost to a certain extent.

  • Did Acronis True Image Home 2012 clone operation "lock" my BitLocker disk?

    After trying to clone my primary drive, which requires a reboot to proceed, BitLocker detected that the boot sector had changed and required the recovery keys. Not a good situation to be in on Sunday evening when it is your IT-department who hold the keys. After talking with the guys at IT, I have tree suspects on why BitLocker locked me out: The newly added, second hard drive in my machine. The changed boot-order in BIOS. The changes True Image did in order to do its things on boot. As an end-user, I should never have to end up in situations like these without any warning. I would like to know what really happened, so I can inform Acronis on how they can improve their product to avoid this situation in the future.

  • Can I "branch" VirtualBox snapshots (base multiple VM on the same disk image + separate diffs)?

    I keep multiple VirtualBoxes for different projects. They are all running the same Debian base system. Keeping complete copies of all the disk images is getting expensive. Is there a way that I can base multiple VM on the same (read-only) disk image, with (hopefully small) diffs layered on top? This is just like snapshots work, except that there is no concept of "current" and "previous", they are more like branches. Or can I just use snapshots (of the "same" VM) for this? I would be wanting to run more than one of those snapshots concurrently.
