• Best practice for administering a (hadoop) cluster

  Dear all, I've recently been playing with Hadoop. I have a six node cluster up and running - with HDFS, and having run a number of MapRed jobs. So far, so good. However I'm now looking to do this more systematically and with a larger number of nodes. Our base system is Ubuntu and the current setup has been administered using apt (to install the correct java runtime) and ssh/scp (to propagate out the various conf files). This is clearly not scalable over time. Does anyone have any experience of good systems for administering (possibly slightly heterogenous: different disk sizes, different numbers of cpus on each node) hadoop clusters automagically? I would consider diskless boot - but imagine that with a large cluster, getting the cluster up and running might be bottle-necked on the machine serving the OS. Or some form of distributed debian apt to keep the machines native environment synchronised? And how do people successfully manage the conf files over a number of (potentially heterogenous) machines? • Is it possible to COMPLETELY replace the start menu?

  I plan to make a replacement for the Windows 7 start menu, and I would like to know if that's even possible. I understand that the start menu is part of explorer.exe but I do not intend to replace explorer.exe. Is it possible to launch the replacement start menu by clicking the native start orb? Is it also possible to launch the replacement by pressing the Windows key or ctrl+esc ? Is the Windows key a macro for ctrl+esc ? or is it two different hotkeys that do the same thing? May I know if there is any software that do any one of these things?

  I have Desktop with configuration Pentium 4,945 intel chipset board,dual booting with win 7 and ubuntu 10.10 (no graphics card) Recently i purchased Dell IN2020M 20" with native resolution of 1600x900 but my display allow maximum of 1024x768 because of this when i play any video in full screen mode it doesn't play smoothly or frames are refreshed jerkily I have tried updating my VGA driver but its doesn't helping me much. Is there any way to solve this problem ? 1if i want to replace monitor what maximum resolution should i buy ? 2if i want to upgrade(graphics card/motherboard) my desktop what is the minimum configuration to support the current system. • set include_path for embed files like .js and .css?

  OK so I now know there is a way to put all my php files in a single place and have them be able to be included without a filepath by setting an include_path like so: php_value include_path .:/pathToPHPFiles OK so now as long as my PHP files are in this directory I can include them from any subdirectory as if they were in the same directory. I am wondering if there is a trick like this for other file types like .css and .js so I can put them all in single location and embed them in a page without worring about the filepath?

• Why does my Sharepoint page's custom content type change to "Page" when editing?

  I have a custom Sharepoint 2007 site definition with custom content types for the different page layouts. When editing a page using a custom layout from the main "View all contents" tree view, the page content type is fine, but if I view the page directly and edit it from there, the content type gets stripped and replaced with "Page." I can change it back by viewing and editing it from the main list, but not from its subsite home location.

  What potential memory leaks won't an implicit destructor handle? I know that if you have anything stored on the heap it won't handle it, and if you have a connection to a file or a database, that needs to be handled manually. Is there anything else? What about, say, non-base data types like vectors? Also, in an explicit destructor, need you destroy non-heap variables which would have been destroyed by the implicit, or are they handled automatically? Thanks

  I'm Confused from the fact that Vlan tagging is done at access port and trunk port always gets tagged packets (until its case of native vlan).But I still believe in other fact which says tagging happen only when a frame hit the trunk port which means trunk port gets untagged frame and tagging is not possible at access port. Would like to know where actually this tagging happens ? and also which command we can use to encapsulate 802.1q protocol to access port ? The way we do at trunk port is switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q Is the above command applicable for access mode also?

UPDATE: When using the following the cast seams to work but when trying to loop with a foreach the data is lost. resultFromDb.ToList() as IEnumerable<BookedResource>; UPDATE 2: Im using entity frameworks generated model, model (edmx) is created from database, edmx include classes that reprecent the database tables. In database i have a history table for old BookedResource and it can happen that the user want to look at these and to get the old data from the database entity framework uses classes with the same name as the tables to receive data from db. So i receive the data from table HistoryBookedResource in HistoryBookedResource class. Because entity framework generate the partial classes with the properties i dont know if i can make them virtual and override. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

• c++ std::ostringstream vs std::string::append

  In all examples that use some kind of buffering I see they use stream instead of string. How is std::ostringstream and << operator different than using string.append. Which one is faster and which one uses less resourses (memory). One difference I know is that you can output different types into output stream (like integer) rather than the limited types that string::append accepts. Here is an example: std::ostringstream os; os << "Content-Type: " << contentType << ";charset=" << charset << "\r\n"; std::string header = os.str(); vs std::string header("Content-Type: "); header.append(contentType); header.append(";charset="); header.append(charset); header.append("\r\n"); Obviously using stream is shorter, but I think append returns reference to the string so it can be written like this: std::string header("Content-Type: "); header.append(contentType) .append(";charset=") .append(charset) .append("\r\n"); And with output stream you can do: std::string content; ... os << "Content-Length: " << content.length() << "\r\n"; But what about memory usage and speed? Especially when used in a big loop. Update: To be more clear the question is: Which one should I use and why? Is there situations when one is preferred or the other? For performance and memory ... well I think benchmark is the only way since every implementation could be different. Update 2: Well I don't get clear idea what should I use from the answers which means that any of them will do the job, plus vector. Cubbi did nice benchmark with the addition of Dietmar Kühl that the biggest difference is construction of those objects. If you are looking for an answer you should check that too. I'll wait a bit more for other answers (look previous update) and if I don't get one I think I'll accept Tolga's answer because his suggestion to use vector is already done before which means vector should be less resource hungry.

• Drawbacks of using an integer as a bitfield?

  I have a bunch of boolean options for things like "accepted payment types" which can include things like cash, credit card, cheque, paypal, etc. Rather than having a half dozen booleans in my DB, I can just use an integer and assign each payment method an integer, like so PAYMENT_METHODS = ( (1<<0, 'Cash'), (1<<1, 'Credit Card'), (1<<2, 'Cheque'), (1<<3, 'Other'), ) and then query the specific bit in python to retrieve the flag. I know this means the database can't index by specific flags, but are there any other drawbacks?

• Should I worry about running out of HierarchyIDs?

  When you ask for a new HierarchyID between two others, the result gets progressively longer. For example, between 2/5.6 and 2/5.7 there's only 2/5.6.1 and other 4 component paths. The HierarchyID data type is limited to 800 some bytes, so you can't repeat this forever. Then again, integer types are also limited, but it isn't a problem in practice. Should I periodically defragment my table so that height doesn't grow unbounded?
