• Application window sent behind other windows on closing different thread (C#)

  I'm writing a Windows Forms Application in C#.NET On startup, the application displays a splash screen which is running in a separate thread. Whilst the splash screen is showing, the main application is initialising. Once the main application has finished initialising, the main form of the application is displayed, and the splash screen still shows over the top. Everything so far is as expected. Then, the Splash screen is closed, which causes that thread to exit. For some reason, at the point, the main application windows gets sent behind all other open Windows, notably the Windows Explorer window where you clicked the .exe file to run the application in the first place! What could be causing the windows to suddenly jump "behind" like this?

• Static variables within functions in C++ - allocated even if function doesn't run?

  I've been reading up on C++ on the Internet, and here's one thing that I haven't been quite able to find an answer to. I know that static variables used within functions are akin to globals, and that subsequent invocations of that function will have the static variable retain its value between calls. However, if the function is never claled, does the static variable get allocated? Thanks

  Is there any way of organizing a icon collection so that it easier to find needed icons? For example: the program needs a save icon there are 5 icons collections on your HD that have a save icon and there are 5 more collections that don't have a save icon (but you don't know that) do you browse through each icon collection? run a search (assumes files are named consistently)? Would it be ideal to have some sort of organized directory (printable?)?

• Wrapping a Flash/AS3 Sprite as a Flex MXML component

  For my game, I am making the main game view as a plain Flash/AS3 class, something like: public class GameArena extends Sprite This is simply a big rectangle in which game objects are drawn, so no need for fancy UI and I want to keep the main game engine Flex-free so I can use Sprites rather than heavier Flex components. However for the entire game/app, I do still want to use Flex for GUI/layout. So I thought I could create a Flex class subclassing UIComponent, which has a GameView object as a child... now I can use this in MXML as a standard Flex component. e.g. public class ArenaView extends UIComponent { public var gameArena:GameArena; override protected function createChildren():void { super.createChildren(); if (!gameArena) { gameArena = new GameArena(); gameArena.width = 200; gameArena.height = 200; addChild(gameArena); } } } Then I have a simple line in my main App MXML like: <logic:Arena x="0" y="0" width="50%" height="100%" name="TestArenaPanel" /> But so far while my code compiles, the Flash class isn't getting rendered. Maybe it's something simple, but I wanted to ask if this is a reasonable approach, or there is something better? BTW: I've had the "should Flex be used" conversation many times.   Hi, I have setup OpenVPN. All seems to be working fine except that Name Lookups are not done via the BIND DNS server on the server. I have added push "redirect-gateway def1" and push "dhcp-option DNS 10.8.0.1" to the OpenVPN server config. It does seem like this is being pushed to the Client. The problem however is that I believe the BIND DNS is not allowing the Client to connect and do name lookups. How do I go about configuring BIND to allow connections from the VPN clients?

• Limiting object allocation over multiple threads

  I have an application which retrieves and caches the results of a clients query. The client then requests different chunks of data and the application sends the relevant results and removes them from the cache. A new requirement for this application is that there needs to be a run-time configurable maximum number of results which may be cached. I've taken the naive approach and implemented this by using a counter under a lock which is incremented every time a result is cached and decremented whenever a result is removed from the cache. Unfortunately, this has drastically reduced the applications performance when processing a large number of concurrent requests. I have tried both a critical section lock and spin-lock; the performance improves a bit with a spin-lock, but is still unacceptably slow. Is there a better way to solve this problem which may improve performance? Right now I have a thread pool that services requests and each request is tied to a Request object which stores that cached results for that particular request. • Need help managing MySql connections

  I'm having trouble finding a clear explanation of connection pooling. I'm building an app using the .NET connector I downloaded from mysql.com. The app only needs one db connection but will be running simultaneously on about 6 machines on my network. Normally, I'd create the connection at startup and just leave it. But I'm seeing lots of posts from people who say that's bad practice. Also I'm concerned about timeouts. My app will run 24/7 and there may be extended periods without database activity. I'm leaning toward the following: using (MySqlConnection conn = new MySqlConnection(connStr)) { conn.Open(); // use connection } But I'm not sure I understand what's going on in the background. Is this actually closing the connection and allowing gc to kill the object, or is there a built in pooling behavior that preserves the object and redelivers it the next time I try to create one? I certainly don't want the app reauthenticating across the network every time I hit the database. Can anyone offer me some advise?

  I need to perform several inserts in a single atomic transaction. For example: start transaction; insert ... insert ... commit; However when MySQL encounters an error it aborts only the particular statement that caused the error. For example, if there is an error in the second insert statement the commit will still take place and the first insert statement will be recorded. Thus, when errors occur a MySQL transaction is not really a transaction. To overcome this problem I have used an error exit handler where I rollback the transaction. Now the transaction is silently aborted but I don't know what was the problem. So here is the conundrum for you: How can I both make MySQL abort a transaction when it encounters an error, and pass the error code on to the caller?

  I do a good number of in-person technical interviews for new developers. I like to ask technical questions where I ask people to either code something up or develop an algorithm to solve a task. I feel my current repertoire is uninspired. In my opinion, the ideal interview question has these qualities: Multiple solutions, where some are obviously better than others, and some that involve subtle trade-offs (discussing tradeoffs is a good way to gauge someone's experience, in my opinion). Novelty - asking the "insert this element into a linked list" question is only good for weeding out people who never did their homework. Elegant - I like questions where the core problem isn't hidden in a lot of details. Everyone should be able to understand the problem, even if everyone can't solve it on the whiteboard. Elegant questions are difficult without involving undue amounts of "domain knowledge" or getting too narrow. Have you been on either side of an interview where someone (maybe you!) asked a particularly good programming or algorithms question?

  I have a thumb nail inside another div, when the thumbnail is hovered I want the parent div to fade/transition to the background of the thumbnail, then fade back to the original image after hover.
