How to set up a load/stress test for a web site?

I've been tasked with stress/load testing our company web site out of the blue and know nothing about doing so. Every search I make on google for "how to load test a web site" just comes back with various companies and software to physically do the load testing. For now I'm more interested in how to actually go about setting up a load test like what I should take into account prior to load testing, what pages within my site I should be testing load against and what things I'm going to want to monitor when doing the test. Our web site is on a multi-tier system complete with a separate database server (IIS 7 Web Server, SQL Server 2000 db). I imagine I'd want to monitor both the web server and the database server for testing load however when setting up scenarios to load test the web server I'd have to use pages that query the database to see any load on the database server at the same time. Are web servers and database servers generally tested simultaneously or are they done as separate tests? As you can see I'm pretty clueless as to the whole operation so any incite as to how to go about this would be very helpful. FYI I have been tinkering with Pylot and was able to create and run a scenario against our site but I'm not sure what I should be looking for in the results or if the scenario I created is even a scenario worth measuring for our site. correct way of initializing variables

Flex vs GWT again

Hi all, I am working on a customized web ontology editor (something like http://webprotege.stanford.edu/ which is built by GWT). My backend will be Java+Spring+Hibernate and domain models are in Java. My frontend will be something like WebProtege which requires extensive RPC call. It is quite clear that I should use GWT as I can refer to the open source code. However, due to company policy, I shall consider Flex as well. I understand Flex can remotely invoke Java backend methods via BlazeDS using AMF (Is there a Flex equivalent of GWT-RPC?). I have read discussion on GWT vs Flex vs ?. If I can make full decision sure I will go with GWT. GWT strengths like support right to left characters, support iPhone/iPad, smaller size, support JSON out of the box, support printing are not important considerations for my project. Besides GWT supports Java generic, enum; domain objects can be shared with both GWT client and server; coding are more seamlessly... anyone can suggest other strong reasons that I should only go with GWT? FYI, I have plenty of Java experience but both GWT and Flex are new to me. Thanks.

Fix DB duplicate entries (MySQL bug)

I'm using MySQL 4.1. Some tables have duplicates entries that go against the constraints. When I try to group rows, MySQL doesn't recognise the rows as being similar. Example: Table A has a column "Name" with the Unique proprety. The table contains one row with the name 'Hach?' and one row with the same name but a square at the end instead of the '?' (which I can't reproduce in this textfield) A "Group by" on these 2 rows return 2 separate rows This cause several problems including the fact that I can't export and reimport the database. On reimporting an error mentions that a Insert has failed because it violates a constraint. In theory I could try to import, wait for the first error, fix the import script and the original DB, and repeat. In pratice, that would take forever. Is there a way to list all the anomalies or force the database to recheck constraints (and list all the values/rows that go against them) ? I can supply the .MYD file if it can be helpful.

Hibernate Exception Fixed By Alt+Tab

Hi all, I've got a very curious problem in Hibernate that I would like some opinions on. In my code if I do the following: Go to page A Click a link on page A to be taken to page B Click on data item on page B Exception thrown I get an error telling me: failed to lazily initialize a collection of role: XYZ, no session or session was closed Fair enough. But when I do the same thing but add an alt+tab in the middle, everything is fine. E.g. Go to page A Click a link on page A to be taken to page B Hit ALt+Tab to switch to another application Hit ALt+Tab to switch back to the web browser Click on data item on page B Everything is fine. I'm a little confused as to how switching focus from my application makes it act as I want it to. Does anyone have any light to shine on the subject? I don't think it's a locking issue as even if I do the second set of steps quicker than the first, still no error. It's a Seam application using Hibernate 3.3.2.GA & 3.4.0.GA.

Optimize a views drawing code

Hi, in a simple drawing application I have a model which has a NSMutableArray curvedPaths holding all the lines the user has drawn. A line itself is also a NSMutableArray, containing the point objects. As I draw curved NSBezier paths, my point array has the following structure: linePoint, controlPoint, controlPoint, linePoint, controlPoint, controlPoint, etc... I thought having one array holding all the points plus control points would be more efficient than dealing with 2 or 3 different arrays. Do I need to write a trigger for such a simple constraint?

I really had a hard time knowing what words to put into the title of my question, as I am not especially sure if there is a database pattern related to my problem. I will try to simplify matters as much as possible to get directly to the heart of the issue. Suppose I have some tables. The first one is a list of widget types: create table widget_types ( widget_type_id number(7,0) primary key, description varchar2(50) ); The next one contains icons: create table icons ( icon_id number(7,0) primary key, picture blob ); Even though the users get to select their preferred widget, there is a predefined subset of widgets that they can choose from for each widget type. create table icon_associations ( widget_type_id number(7,0) references widget_types, icon_id number(7,0) references icons, primary key (widget_type_id, icon_id) ); create table icon_prefs ( user_id number(7,0) references users, widget_type_id number(7,0), icon_id number(7,0), primary key (user_id, widget_type_id), foreign key (widget_type_id, icon_id) references icon_associations ); Pretty simple so far. Let us now assume that if we are displaying an icon to a user who has not set up his preferences, we choose one of the appropriate images associated with the current widget. I'd like to specify the preferred icon to display in such a case, and here's where I run into my problem: alter table icon_associations add ( is_preferred char(1) check( is_preferred in ('y','n') ) ) ; I do not see how I can enforce that for each widget_type there is one, and only one, row having is_preferred set to 'y'. I know that in MySQL, I am able to write a subquery in my check constraint to quickly resolve this issue. This is not possible with Oracle. Is my mistake that this column has no business being in the icon_associations table? If not where should it go? Is this a case where, in Oracle, the constraint can only be handled with a trigger? How can I get HTML to link to a browser (or system) specified URL?

Hi All, I'd like to be able to create a "HTML link" that the user can click on and be taken to an URL (location) specified either in the browser (preferences?) or system environment. Is this possible? Any suggestions on how to do it please? For example, it may look something like this (or alternatively it could be a clickable image or even a submit button): "Click here to go to your preferred news site." When the user clicks on "here" the browser would go to a location specified not in the HTML but somehow in the browser (preferences?) or some system environment variable (OS specific etc.) Of course, the user would have to set up this preference or environment variable (or have some local application or better Web page that could set it - when approved by the user). This is sort of like most OS these days allow you to set "preferred app" for image processing or playing media. I would like to set preferred Web sites for certain tasks. Thanks for any suggestions. Hopefully with Javascript and modern browsers and perhaps HTML 5 something like this is possible. Cheers, Ashley.

Hey everyone I created a date picker that uses ajax to populate an element with an id of calendarContainer. When the user clicks on a button to bring the calendar up, I want the user to be able to click anywhere else on the screen besides the calendar and have it hide. The calendarContainer is at the root of the dom and I have tried everything I can think of to get this working. I have gotten the calendar to go away when it is not clicked on. However, when I click on the calendar it is also going away. I only want the calendar to go away when it is not clicked on. Tomcat does not pick up the class file - the JSP file is not displayed

I have a Java code which is a controller for a jsp page, called: HomeController.java. Code is as follows: @Controller public class HomeController { protected final transient Log log = LogFactory.getLog(getClass()); @RequestMapping(value = "/mypage") public String home() { System.out.println("HomeController: Passing through..."); return "home"; } } There is nothing especial in the jsp page: home.jsp. If I go to this url: http://localhost:8080/adcopyqueue/mypage I can view mypage and everything works fine. Also in the tomcat Dos page I can see the comment: HomeController: Passing through... As expected. Now under the same directory that I have HomeController.java, I've created another file called: LoginController.java. Following is the code: @Controller public class LoginController { protected final transient Log log = LogFactory.getLog(getClass()); @RequestMapping(value = "/loginpage") public String login() { System.out.println("LoginController: Passing through..."); return "login"; } } And under the same place which I have home.jsp, I've created login.jsp. Also under tomcat folders, LoginController.class exists under the same folder that HomeController.class exists and login.jsp exists under the same folder which home.jsp exists. But when I go to this url: http://localhost:8080/adcopyqueue/loginpage Nothing is displayed! I think tomcat does not pick up LoginController.class b/c on the tomcat Dos window, I do NOT see this comment: LoginController: Passing through... Instead I see following which I do not know what do they mean? I have no idea why tomcat sees one of the files and not the other? Clean build did not help. Does anybody have any idea? Any help is greatly appraciated.

Auto Submitting a form (cURL)

Im writing a form to post data off to paypal, and this works fine, i create the form with hidden fields and then have a submit button that submits everything to paypal. However, when the user clicks that button, there is more that i want to do, for example change their cart status in the database. So, i want to be able to execute some code when they click submit and then post the data to paypal. I dont want to use javascript for this. My method at the moment is using cURL, the form posts back to the current page, i then check for $_POST data, do my other commands like updating the status of the cart, and then create a curl command, and post the form data to paypal. Now, it gets posted successfully, but the browser doesnt go off to paypal. At first i was just retirieving the result in a string and then echoing it out and i could see that the post was successful, then i set CURLOPT_FOLLOWLOCATION to 1 assuming this would let the browser go off to paypal but it doesnt, what it seems to do is grab some stuff from paypal and put it on my page. Is using cURL the right thing for this? and if so, how do i get round this problem? I want to stay away from javascript for this as only users with javascript enabled would have their cart updated. How can I debug PEAR auth?

I have a directory on my site that I've implemented PEAR's Auth to run my authentication. It is working great. However, I've tried to make a copy of my site (it's going to be translated to a different language), and on this new site, the Auth process doesn't seem to be working correctly. I can login properly, but every time I try to go to a different page in the same directory, and use Auth to authorize, it forces me to login again. Here's my logic: $auth_options = array( 'dsn' => mysql://user:password@server/db', 'table' => 'users', 'usernamecol' => 'username', 'passwordcol' => 'password', 'db_fields' => '*' ); $auth = new Auth("DB", $auth_options, "login_function"); $auth->setFailedLoginCallback('bad_login'); $auth->start(); if (!$auth->checkAuth()) { die('cannot succeed in checkAuth') exit; } else { include("nocache.php"); } This is part of a file that's included in every php page I that I desire to require authentication. I can login properly once, but whenever I then try to go to a different page that requires authentication, it makes me login again (and I see the 'cannot succeed' die message at the bottom of the page). Again, this solution works fine on my original site, I copied all the files, and only changed the db server/password - it still doesn't work. And I'm using the same webhost for both. What am I doing wrong here? Or how can I debug this further?

Finding missing files by checksum

Hi there, I'm doing a large data migration between two file systems (let's call them F1 and F2) on a Linux system which will necessarily involve copying the data verbatim into a differently-structured hierarchy on F2 and changing the file names. I'd like to write a script to generate a list of files which are in F1 but not in F2, i.e. the ones which weren't copied by the migration script into the new hierarchy, so that I can go back and migrate them manually. Unfortunately for reasons not worth going into, the migration script can't be modified to list files that it doesn't migrate. My question differs from this previously answered one because of the fact that I cannot rely on filenames as a comparison. I know the basic outline of the process would be: Generate a list of checksums for all files, recursing through F1 Do the same for F2 Compare the lists and generate a negative intersection of the checksums, ignoring the file names, to find files which are in F1 but not in F2. I'm kind of stuck getting past that stage, so I'd appreciate any pointers on which tools to use. I think I need to use the 'comm' command to compare the list of file checksums, but since md5sum, sha512sum and the like put the file name next to the checksum, I can't see a way to get it to bring me a useful comparison. Maybe awk is the way to go? I'm using Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.x. Thanks.

Designing a chain of states

I want to model a kind of FSM(Finite State Machine). I have a sequence of states (let's say, from StateA to StateZ). This sequence is called a Chain and is implemented internally as a List. I will add states by the order I want them to run. My purpose is to be able to make a sequence of actions in my computer (for example, mouse clicks). (I know this has been done a zillion times). So a state is defined as a: boolean Precondition() <- Checks to see if for this state, some condition is true. For example, if I want to click in the Record button of a program, in this method I would check if the program's process is running or not. If it is, go to the next state in the chain list, otherwise, go to what was defined as the fail state (generally is the first state of them all). IState GetNextState() <- Returns the next state to evaluate. If Precondition() was sucessful, it should yield the next state in the chain otherwise it should yield the fail state. Run() Simply checks the Precondition() and sets the internal data so GetNextState() works as expected. So, a naive approach to this would be something like this: Chain chain = new Chain(); //chain.AddState(new State(Precondition, FailState, NextState) <- Method structure chain.AddState(new State(new WinampIsOpenCondition(), null, new <problem here, I want to referr to a state that still wasn't defined!>); The big problem is that I want to make a reference to a State that at this point still wasn't defined. I could circumvent the problem by using strings when refrering to states and using an internal hashtable, but isn't there a clearer alternative? I could just pass only the pre-condition and failure states in the constructor, having the chain just before execution put in each state the correct next state in a public property but that seems kind of awkward.

So I just fixed an interesting bug in the following code, but I'm not sure the approach I took it the best: p = 1 probabilities = [ ... ] # a (possibly) long list of numbers between 0 and 1 for wp in probabilities: if (wp > 0): p *= wp # Take the natural log, this crashes when 'probabilites' is long enough that p ends up # being zero try: result = math.log(p) Because the result doesn't need to be exact, I solved this by simply keeping the smallest non-zero value, and using that if p ever becomes 0. p = 1 probabilities = [ ... ] # a long list of numbers between 0 and 1 for wp in probabilities: if (wp > 0): old_p = p p *= wp if p == 0: # we've gotten so small, its just 0, so go back to the smallest # non-zero we had p = old_p break # Take the natural log, this crashes when 'probabilites' is long enough that p ends up # being zero try: result = math.log(p) This works, but it seems a bit kludgy to me. I don't do a ton of this kind of numerical programming, and I'm not sure if this is the kind of fix people use, or if there is something better I can go for.

Continuous Flash music player while navigating site

I have a site that includes a Flash music player integrated into the layout. I want users to be able to navigate around the site without interrupting the music. I've done plenty of research and thinking and the following are the options I came up with (keeping in mind I want to be as SEO friendly as possible). Anyone have another idea? AJAX: I set up a version that changes the main content div to whatever nav link they click, thereby not interrupting the Flash player. I set it up in the proper search-engine-friendly manner with direct links and JQuery/Ajax functions. If someone goes to site.com/ and clicks the Contact nav link, it loads what's in the main content div on site.com/contact.php into the main content div and changes the URL bar to site.com/#Contact. The same goes for if they go to site.com/contact.php and click About in the nav, it loads the About content and changes the URL bar to site.com/contact.php#About. Obviously this opens up a whole new can of worms with AJAX and hash navigation/history issues, and I would end up with people possibly linking to things like site.com/contact.php#About (which I think looks terrible and can't be too great for SEO). Store the Flash player vars somewhere and reload them with the page: I'm not sure how to go about this, but I thought about keeping my regular navigation without AJAX and have it so when a user clicks a nav link, before it changes pages it stores the Flash player vars (current song and song position) somewhere, then loads them into Flash when the new page loads. Something with an iframe? Good alternative to a Flash player that will work for this type of application? Thanks!

Why wouldn't an embedded silverlight control work in a page?

Hi, I have a silverlight application project in my solution. The other project is a web application project that has a .xap file in ClientBin. When I created the silverlight project, it asked if I wanted the asp.net application to host it (and I said yes). In the root directory, there is a test page for the silverlight control. That loads the control. In another directory, I insert the SAME asp markup to get the silverlight control to launch again. Nothing happens. Why would the silverlight launch on one page and not on the other? Can people help point me to documentation about dependencies that I might not know about? I've put a reference to Silverlight.js on the page as well. How do I become better in math, after being a programmer for several years.

I've had quite a weird career till now. First I graduated from a medical school. Then I went into marketing (pharmaceuticals). And then umm, after some time, I decided to go for my (till then) hobby and became a "professional" programmer. I've been quite successful at this ever since. I have quite some languages "under my belt". I earn not bad and I have been involved in the opensource community quite heavily. The thing is that I suck at math :). Well, not totally of course, as I get my work done. But I don't know how much I suck. And I don't know how to find out. Math has never really been of any priority during my middle/high school years. I only picked as little as I could afford, because I was always getting ready to go for Medicine. Of course I know the basics of algebra. Things like "normal" and square equations. Also the basics of geometry. But well, there are things that I have missed. And lately I am being fascinated by things like probability theory, infinity, chaos/order etc. But every time I try to learn something about these topics, I hit a wall of terminology, special symbols, and some special kind of thinking, that is quite like mine (a programmer), but also a lot different (and appears weird to me). So, what kinds of books would you recommend me? It's very hard to find something suitable. All that I find are either too easy (and boring) or totally impenetrable.

Javascript to check if there is flash player installed and redirect to the neededn page.

Hi. I have this script. This determines if there is a flash player installed in the browser, it redirects the browser to a flash website. if not, then it opens a non-flash website. The Code is here: <SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">  </SCRIPT> What i want is to embed this code in the non-flash index page. it should just check if there is no flash then simply go with the current index file that already has been opened, or if there is no flash player, then load the index file from within the flash website. Currently, when index.html (non-flash) is opened, it goes into loop and keeps on checking for the flash player. Can I modify the window.location='index.html'; statement no to load any file here, just go on with the file already opened.??

I do not want to double post a question; I was trying to post an add-on to my first question that I was looking for additional help. How does one go about this? Here is the original question. jQuery Hover Fade Button with an Active State Was hoping to see if there is a solution to the glitch I found. The problem I am now looking for help with is all other buttons still have the hover effect, but a button that was once active no longer does. <ul class="buttons"> <li><a class="button" href="#">button 1</a></li> <li><a class="button" href="#">button 2</a></li> <li><a class="button" href="#">button 3</a></li> </ul> Best way to explain this. If button 2 is clicked – it is now active. Buttons 1 and 3 will still hover. If you click on button 1 – it is now active and button 2 will no longer hover while button 3 will. Help regarding database and logic layer for my ASP.NET MVC application

I'm going to start a new project which is going to be small initially but may grow to big over the years. I'm strongly convinced that I'm going to use ASP.NET MVC with jQuery for UI. I want to go for MySQL as database for some reasons but worried on few things. I've a good years of experience working on SQL Server databases and on one project I've had a bad experience creating and managing stored procedures on MySQL database. I'm totally new to Linq but I see that it is easier to use once you are familiar with it. First thing is that accessing data should be easy. So I thought I should use MySQL to Linq but somewhere I read that it is not directly supported but MySQL .NET connector adds support for EntityFramework. I don't know what are the pros and cons of it. I would love if I can implement repository pattern. Will it be possible if I use Entity Framework? I'm not clear on how I should go about all this or I should just forget every thing and directly use SQL to Linq on SQL Server. I'm also concerned about the performance. Someone told me that if we use Entity framework it fetches lot of data and then filter it. Is that right?

How does this Bookmarklet allow you to stay signed into this site?

Hello all, I have come across Evernote's bookmarklet and was wondering how this worked. You can just drag it to your bookmark and go to any webpage, click that bookmarklet and it will first ask you to login in. All this I have done already and know how it works. The bit that I don't understand is that when you log in they authenticate you and allow you to submit stuff (in this case, a site url etc). When you are done the bookmarklet which placed a small overlay on the page you are viewing disappears. When you go to a new tab and use the bookmarklet again you are still logged in! How? I can see they are using an iFrame when their bookmarklet loads the overlay onto the page - but do they set cookies or something? If so, is this secure? Anyone can change the values? Or are they using some sort of private/public key system Btw, I would like to replicate this Bookmarklet using PHP/Javascript(JQuery maybe). I would appreciate if anyone can help me understand how they do this or point me to relevant tutorials. Thanks all for any help.

WPF: How do I bind a Control to a formula composed of several dependency properties?

Hi all, I'm working on Expression Blend and I'm currently designing a custom control which has a Grid with 5 rows inside, and also has two Dependency properties: "Value", and "Maximum". Three of the rows have fixed height, and what I'm trying to do is set the remaining rows height to "Value/Maximum" and "1-Value/Maximum" respectively. How do I go and do that? When I set the height to "Value" it seems to react, but when I go and set it to "Value/Maximum" it stops working. I'm still a bit new around WPF, so there must be another way to achieve what I'm intending, but after searching I couln't find my problem elsewhere. How do I convert a simple ruby flashcard program into a ROR app?

What I'm trying to do is make a basic flashcard app on rails. At this point, all I'm looking for is the functionality to iterate through a list of flashcards, quiz the user and let the user know if they were right or not. In ruby, it didn't take me long to write: class Card attr_accessor :answer, :question def initialize(answer = "", question="") @answer = answer @question = question end def quiz puts "What does #@question mean?" answer = gets.chomp if answer == @answer puts "Right" return true else puts "Wrong" return answer end end end class Cardlist attr_accessor :Cards def initialize(Cards = []) @Cards = Cards end def quiz Cards.each do |w| w.quiz end end end The problem I'm having with rails is figuring out where to put the logic to loop through all the cards in the list. I've made models specifying that Card belongs_to cardlist and that Cardlist has_many cards. I know application logic should go in the controller, but if I were to make a "quiz" action for my Cardlist controller, how would I make it iterate through all the cards? After each "quiz" page generated, I'd need to get an answer back from the user, respond (maybe flash) whether it was right or not and then continue onto the next question. Would any of that logic have to go into the view in order to make sure it's sending back the user inputted answers to the controller?
