• Emacs: Often switching between Emacs and my IDE's editor, how can I 'synch' the file?

  I very often need to do some Emacs magic on some files and I need to go back and forth my IDE (IntelliJ IDEA) and Emacs. When a change is made under Emacs (and after I've saved the file) and I go back to IntelliJ the change appears immediately (if I recall correctly I configured IntelliJ to "always reload file when a modification is detected on disk" or something like that). I don't even need to reload: as soon as IntelliJ IDEA gains focus, it instantly reloads the file (and I hence have immediately access to the modifications I made from Emacs). So far, so very good. However "the other way round", it doesn't work yet. Can I configure Emacs so that everytime a file is changed on disk it reloads it? Or make Emacs, everytime it "gains focus", verify if any file currently opened has been modified on disk? I know I can start modifying the buffer under Emacs and it shall instantly warn that it has been modified, but I'd rather have it do it immediately (for example if I used my IDE to do some big change, when I come back to Emacs what I see may not be at all anymore what the file contains and it's a bit weird).

• Configure Django project in a subdirectory using mod_python. Admin not working.

  HI guys. I was trying to configure my django project in a subdirectory of the root, but didn't get things working.(LOcally it works perfect). I followed the django official django documentarion to deploy a project with mod_python. The real problem is that I am getting "Page not found" errors, whenever I try to go to the admin or any view of my apps. Here is my python.conf file located in /etc/httpd/conf.d/ in Fedora 7 LoadModule python_module modules/mod_python.so SetHandler python-program PythonHandler django.core.handlers.modpython SetEnv DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE mysite.settings PythonOption django.root /mysite PythonDebug On PythonPath "['/var/www/vhosts/mysite.com/httpdocs','/var/www/vhosts/mysite.com/httpdocs/mysite'] + sys.path" I know /var/www/ is not the best place to put my django project, but I just want to send a demo of my work in progress to my customer, later I will change the location. For example. If I go to www.domain.com/mysite/ I get the index view I configured in mysite.urls.   I'm building a web application using Spring framework and Hibernate with annotation and get stuck with a simple mapping between two entities. I'm trying to create a many-to-many relationship between User and Course. • Where to turn upon realizing I can't program my way out of a paper bag?

  I have no job and just enough money to get by until April or so. While looking for work, I figured I might as well go through with a pet project, a browser based card game. Make it nice and free, collect donations and maybe earn enough for a movie ticket to escape reality for a while. I have dabbled in web development a bit. I can make simple stuff happen with JS/PHP if I follow tutorials. I designed my own art blog's template - http://luminarious.tumblr.com. I can visualise the game working in my head, flowcharts and everything. But then I tried to go deeper with Javascript and almost had an aneurysm before understanding what a closure is. Wether I suck at learning, have ADD or fail epically at productivity, I have not got much done. Coming up with ideas, screen mock-ups and so forth was very enjoyable, but actual implementation.. not so much. In fact, I cry a bit every time I think about the time someone competent could have finished this in. I'd like to excuse myself with my ENTP personality type, but that hardly solves anything. Rather, I'd like to know to get from A (bunch of ideas with little semblance to a web app) to B (something to proudly show others) while being unable to pay anyone? Are there any secret techniques for learning? Is there any way to get mentoring or code review? Is there anyone with too much free time willing to code for me? How to trust someone to not steal my code when I ask for assistance? Is there anything I should have asked instead of any of those?

• Android Plugin for Eclipse problem

  I am using a laptop with Windows 7 Home Prem x64. I have installed Java JDK1.6.0_18 and Eclipse Gallileo. I have downloaded and installed the latest version of Android SDK with several Platforms loaded and a AVD defined. I can install the Android Eclipse plugin from the remote site stated in the instructions. The plugin installation performs without any errors and I can verify that the plugins are indeed installed. My problem begins when I go to Windows - Preferences, there is no Android section to configure. And when I go to File - New - Project, there is no Android Project to choose. I have uninstalled the plugin and reinstalled at least 10 times, trying different things and still no luck. I originally had the 64 bit version of the JDK installed, but removed it and installed the 32 bit version. Has anyone heard of this type of problem? Is it because I am using Windows 7? As you can see the user inputs their data into a multi-line textbox. i then take that data and enter it into a list. the next part is where i'm stuck. i create a for loop to go through the list line by line, but i guess i will also need to go through each line character by character. How do i do this? or is there a faster way of doing it? thanks in advance

• How can I programmatically determine if my workstation is locked?

  I'm writing up some productivity/metrics tools for myself to help monitor my focus throughout the day. Recently, I've noticed that I tend to get off track more than usual and feel the need to get up and go for walks/drinks/etc and I'm concerned that I'm "wasting" too much time. Since I always lock my computer when I go anywhere, and I unlock it as soon as I return (even if I'm just reading at my desk, etc), I was wondering how I can determine, in code, how long the machine is locked. I'm writing this in C# if that helps, but I'm open to other ideas. I like the windows service idea (and have accepted it) for simplicity and cleanliness, but unfortunately I don't think it will work for me in this particular case. I wanted to run this on my workstation at work rather than home (or in addition to home, I suppose), but it's locked down pretty hard courtesy of the DoD. That's part of the reason I'm rolling my own, actually. I'll write it up anyway and see if it works. Thanks everyone!

• [^.] causing headache in RewriteRule

  I am struggling with a very basic regex problem in my .htaccess file that I hope someone may be able to shed some light on. The basic premise is that I would like to teach Apache to switch any .html extension into a .var extension. I had thought that the rule would be positively trivial: RewriteRule ^([^.]+)\.html$ $1.var But the [^.] part simply doesn't work. Bizarrely, it works like so RewriteRule ^([^A-Z]+)\.html$ $1.var I do not understand why this latter rule works. Assume I am looking for a file called "index.html" then $1 should match to "index." and the ".html" bit should actually fail to match. To widen the scope of the question slightly, I am actually racking my brain on how to implement a multi-lingual site. I don't like Apache's MultiView option because it forces upon me a flat directory structure with file extensions that aren't recognizable to many development tools. I could go the .var type-map route but am finding that the default config for Apache doesn't support this all that well either (hence my excursions into regex land). So while I am using mod_rewrite, I am thinking that I might go the whole hog: whenever a request for a name.html file is received and this file does not exist, check whether there exists a XX/name.html file instead, where "XX" is the language code according to the user's preferences. This would give me a neater directory structure, though it does perhaps not perform as well as the .var approach in a situation where the language preference of the user's browser is not supported in by my site (in which situation .var would substitute EN or similar). Any thoughts? Thanks.

• List all foreign key constraints that refer to a particular column in a specific table

  I would like to see a list of all the tables and columns that refer (either directly or indirectly) a specific column in the 'main' table via a foreign key constraint that has the ON DELETE=CASCADE setting missing. The tricky part is that there would be an indirect relationships buried across up to 5 levels deep. (example: ... great-grandchild- FK3 = grandchild = FK2 = child = FK1 = main table). We need to dig up the leaf tables-columns, not just the very 1st level. The 'good' part about this is that execution speed isn't of concern, it'll be run on a backup copy of the production db to fix any relational issues for the future. I did SELECT * FROM sys.foreign_keys but that gives me the name of the constraint - not the names of the child-parent tables and the columns in the relationship (the juicy bits). • Subdomain Routing Rules (using chaining) Broke after upgrading to Zend Framework 1.9.5, but only for

  I asked a similar question months ago (see How do I write Routing Chains for a Subdomain in Zend Framework in a routing INI file?), on how to write chaining rules in an app.ini format. The answer to this question worked wonderfully! Now, however, I have upgraded to the latest version of the Zend Framework 1.9.5 (I needed to upgrade for another issue) and now my subdomains no longer work! To clarify, if I visit subdomain.domain.com, it does not recognize my rule. However, if I visit subdomain.domain.com/somepage/ it does recognize my routing rule. Here is my code: ;; the following is apparently being ignored, and does not work routes.manager.type = "Zend_Controller_Router_Route_Hostname" routes.manager.route = "manager.sitename.com" routes.manager.defaults.module = "manager" ;; this is not being ignored and works! routes.manager.chains.settings.type = "Zend_Controller_Router_Route_Static" routes.manager.chains.settings.route = "/settings" routes.manager.chains.settings.defaults.controller = "manager" routes.manager.chains.settings.defaults.action = "settings" So for example, if I go to manager.sitename.com, it just redirects to my default index and controller (does not access the module, $this-getRequest()-getModuleName() is blank). However, if I go to manager.sitename.com/settings, the page comes up! This app.ini configuration works fine in ZF 1.7.8, But now since I upgraded to 1.9.5, it no longer works. I have tried adding routes.manager.defaults.controller = "manager" and routes.manager.defaults.action = 'index" to my configuration as well, but this didn't work. There is not much out there on the internet with chaining and app.ini dealing with Zend Framework. Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

• Loading specific files from arbitrary directories?

  I want to load foo.txt. foo.txt might exist in the data/bar/ directory, or it might exist in the data/New Folder/ directory. There might be a different foo.txt in both of these directories, in which case I would want to either load one and ignore the other according to some order that I've sorted the directories by (perhaps manually, perhaps by date of creation), or else load them both and combine the results somehow. The latter (combining the results of both/all foo.txt files) is circumstantial and beyond the scope of this question, but something I want to be able to do in the future. I'm using SDL and boost::filesystem. I want to keep my list of dependencies as small as possible, and as cross-platform as possible. I'm guessing that my best bet would be to get a list of every directory (within the data/ folder), sort/filter this list, then when I go to load foo.txt, I search for it in each potential directory? This sounds like it would be very inefficient, if I have dozens of potential directories to search through every time. What's the best way to go about accomplishing this? Bonus: What if I want some of the directories to be archives? ie. considering both data/foo/ and data/bar.zip to both be valid, and pull foobar.txt from either one without caring.

• cURL/PHP Request Executes 50% of the Time

  After searching all over, I can't understand why cURL requests issued to a remote SSL-enabled host are successful only 50% or so of the time in my case. Here's the situation: I have a sequence of cURL requests, all of them issued to a HTTPS remote host, within a single PHP script that I run using the PHP CLI. Occasionally when I run the script the requests execute successfully, but for some reason most of the times I run it I get the following error from cURL: * About to connect() to www.virginia.edu port 443 (#0) * Trying 128.143.22.36... * connected * Connected to www.virginia.edu (128.143.22.36) port 443 (#0) * successfully set certificate verify locations: * CAfile: none CApath: /etc/ssl/certs * error:140943FC:SSL routines:SSL3_READ_BYTES:sslv3 alert bad record mac * Closing connection #0 If I try again a few times I get the same result, but then after a few tries the requests will go through successfully. Running the script after that again results in an error, and the pattern continues. Researching the error 'alert bad record mac' didn't give me anything helpful, and I hesitate to blame it on an SSL issue since the script still runs occasionally. I'm on Ubuntu Server 10.04, with php5 and php5-curl installed, as well as the latest version of openssl. In terms of cURL specific options, CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYPEER is set to false, and both CURLOPT_TIMEOUT and CURLOPT_CONNECTTIMEOUT are set to 4 seconds. Further illustrating this problem is the fact that the same exact situation occurs on my Mac OS X dev machine - the requests only go through ~50% of the time.

• How to Store and Retrieve Images Using SQL Server (Server Management Studio)

  I am having difficulties when trying to insert files into a SQL Server database. I'll try to break this down as best as I can: What data type should I be using to store image files (jpeg/png/gif/etc)? Right now my table is using the image data type, but I am curious if varbinary would be a better option. How would I go about inserting the image into the database? Does Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio have any built in functions that allow insertions of files into tables? If so, how is that done? Also, how could this be done through the use of an HTML form with PHP handling the input data and placing it into the table? How would I fetch the image from the table and display it on the page? I understand how to SELECT the cell's contents, but how would I go about translating that into a picture. Would I have to have a header(Content type: image/jpeg)? I have no problem doing any of these things with MySQL, but the SQL Server environment is still new to me, and I am working on a project for my job that requires the use of stored procedures to grab various data. Any and all help is appreciated.

• PHP Multi-Domain Sessions; ini_set Not Working?

  Hello, I'm trying to set it up so if you log in to my website the session carries over to all sub-domains of my website. For example, if you go to domain.com and log in, then go to sub.domain.com, you'll already be logged in at sub.domain.com. To my understanding, you would want to use ini_set('session.cookie_domain','.domain.com') and then session_start(), then set your session variables, but this isn't working. Example of what I'm doing: Code for domain.com: <?php ini_set('session.cookie_domain','.domain.com'); session_start(); $_SESSION['variable'] = 1; ?> Code for sub.domain.com: <?php session_start(); echo $_SESSION['variable']; ?> But $_SESSION['variable'] isn't set. I've also tried using ini_set() in the sub.domain.com code, but it made no difference. I've verified that setting session.cookie_domain is working by using ini_get(). What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

• ViewController Navigating

  I have 4 ViewControllers, startViewController as the initial View Controller. This contains my intro. After its finish, it will [self presentViewController:vc animated:YES completion:NULL]; into my menuViewController. startViewController ------> menuViewController ------> C1ViewController \ \ ------> ImportantViewController In my menuViewController are buttons for the two ViewController like the above illustration. Also I presented them in the View with this: [self presentViewController:vc animated:YES completion:NULL]; I return tomenuViewController with this [self dismissModalViewControllerAnimated:YES]; What I wanted is to make the ImportantViewController to be the like the parent view or the mainVIew even if I go to other Views. What I need is when ImportantViewController is presented when I go to either C1ViewController or menuViewController it wont be deallocated, or its content there will still be retained. Is it possible? And How? I don't know much about what parent and child view controllers for so I dont know what to implement in my problem. Thank you. BTW, Im using Storyboard.

• View Source and Chrome Developer Tools showing different output

  I have a page located here. Viewing it in Chrome and Firefox show a really small h1 title, and also it changes color as if it is a link. The template that generates everything looks exactly how it should be. When diagnosing the issue, the relevant section of code looks like this when I go to view source: <div class="page-heading"> <h1>Title Here</h1> </div> However, when I go to view it in Chrome's Developer tools, it is throwing in extraneous malformed anchor tags, which is obviously causing the hovering behavior. This is what it looks like to the dev tools: <div class="page-heading"> <h1> <a style="font-family: arial; font-size: 9px" <="" a="">Title Here</a> </h1> </div> In addition, when viewing a local copy of the site, the output shown in the dev tools is the same as viewing the source and they both render correctly locally. Oddly enough, all version of IE render it correctly. The current version of both Chrome and Firefox both render it weirdly. • Best way to implement some type of ITaggable interface

  I've got a program I'm creating that reports on another certain programs backup xml files. I've gotten to the point where I need to implement some type of ITaggable interface - but am unsure how to go about it code wise. My idea is that each item (BackupClient, BackupVersion, and BackupFile) should implement an ITaggable interface for highlighting old, out of date, or non-existent files in their HTML or Excel report. The user will be able to specify tags in the settings. My question is this, how can a user dynamically specify a "tag" such as File Date 3 days old? - Background Color = Red. Actually I guess my question is more, how can I, the programmer, implement this dynamically? I was thinking Expression trees, but am unsure this is the way to go as I havn't studied them much. I know my ITaggable interface would have methods such as AddTag(T tag), RemoveTag(T tag), but what exactly specifies the criteria for the tag to be added? I realize this may be subjective, and can be marked as wiki if need be, but I truly am stuck. Any input would be greatly helpful!

• How to check data in a column separated by a colon (:)

  Hi, I have an Oracle database column, say col1, that has the following values: Col1 (A:B:C) I now need to come along and add to this Col1, only if it doesn’t exist, additional values but unsure how to go about checking to see if Col1 already contains these values. Scenario might be as follows: 1) Need to add B => Outcome=> check Col1 – B exists, do not add. 2) Need to add A:C => Outcome=> check Col1 – A and C exists, do not add. 3) Need to add C:D => Outcome=> check Col1 – C exists but D doesn’t, do not add C but need to add D 4) Need to add G => Outcome=> check Col1 – G doesn’t, need to add G Using Oracle sql or pl/sql I am unsure how to go about processing the above to ensure whether items exist or don’t exist and whether to add or not to add to Col1 Hoping someone can assist with a means of checking the data based on the above. • Why should I prefer OSGi Services over exported packages?

  Hi, I am trying to get my head around OSGi Services. The main question I keep asking myself is: What's the benefit of using services instead of working with bundles and their exported packages? As far as I know it seems the concept of Late Binding has something to do with it. Bundle dependencies are wired together at bundle start, so they are pretty fixed I guess. But with services it seems to be almost the same. A bundle starts and registers services or binds to services. Of course services can come and go whenever they want and you have to keep track of these chances. But the core idea doesn't seem that different to me. Another aspect to this seems to be that services are more flexible. There could be many implementations for one specific Interface. On the other hand there can be a lot of different implementations for a specific exported package too. In another text I read that the disadvantage of using exported packages is that they make the application more fragile than services. The author wrote that if you remove one bundle from the dependency graph other dependencies would no longer be met, thus possibly causing a domino effect on the whole graph. But couldn't the same happen if a service would go offline? To me it looks like service dependencies are no better than bundle dependencies. So far I could not find a blog post, book or presentation that could clearly describe why services are better than just exposing functionality by exporting and importing packages. To sum my questions up: What are the key benefits of using OSGi Services that make them superior to exporting and importing packages?

• IDENTITY_INSERT ON inside of cursor does not allow inserted id

  I am trying to set some id's for a bunch of rows in a database where the id column is an identity. I've created a cursor to loop through the rows and update the ids with incrementing negative numbers (-1,-2,-3 etc). When I updated just one row turning on the IDENTITY_INSERT it worked fine but as soon as I try and use it in a cursor, it throws the following error. Msg 8102, Level 16, State 1, Line 22 Cannot update identity column 'myRowID'. • Looking forward to a programming future but confused where to start.

  Hi there, I am very new to this site and to programming. I started doing some basic programming with python a few weeks ago and recently, messing around with Java basics. My main problem is that I am completely overwhelmed and haven't got the slightest clue where I should be starting. I want to learn programming because I really enjoy doing it, the simple applications that I have managed to conjure up put a smile on my face. My plan is to eventually (by eventually I'm talking about 6 years+) go into games programming. I have been informed that C++ is the best way to go about this but haven't got the slightest clue what book/sight is optimal for someone who is still learning the very basics. These are my questions: I have been to the Definitive C++ Book Guide but am still unsure which book is best to start of with. Should I stick with Python or Java instead of moving on to C++? Is there any advice you would give to a beginner programmer? Thanks again for all your help.
