• how to get SSRS 2008 R2 to export/render in Excel 2007 format?

  I have a report that has ~1k columns and ~17k rows and I'm trying to render it to Excel 2007 with SSRS 2008 R2 Nov CTP. SSRS team members have mentioned in multiple places that Excel 2007 format is included in 2008 R2, for instance: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlreportingservices/thread/69545568-73cb-4f4c-8f35-44472ba6d013 Now, it's certainly possible that it just hasn't made it into the product yet (at least as of Nov CTP), and if that's the case, that would be good to know, too (and ideally when it would be in the product). • PDF permissions management with ASP.NET - Timeout Issue

  I have a website that has several PDF files. I need to have quite a few of them locked down with the standard ASP.NET authentication (in a folder with web.config that denies anonymous users). I set PDF files to get handled by the ASP.NET worker process and added: <add type="System.Web.StaticFileHandler" path="*.pdf" verb="*" /> to my web.config, but for some reason they hang when downloading. I've seen this issue before on an old server, and for the live of me I can't remember what I did to solve it. Does anyone have any idea? Thanks.

• Store html form on client or server while building?

  Hi, I have a fairly complex html form enhanced via jquery. It has multiple tabs, within each one things like a html form builder, uploads, descriptions. There is lots of data, and as the user flicks around the various tabs I'm thinking of posting the data to the server. For example, the form builder, has about 10 properties for each field, as the user flicks between the various fields, an ajax request saves the current values, then loads a new set from the new field clicked on. When the user hits save, the idea is then on the server all these bits and pieces come together and become the live version (i may store them as a temp version while the user is working away). So I guess my question is, for complex forms where the same fields are re-used within the one form, does anyone attempt to save all this data locally and upload it in one hit or do most of you do little ajax post's and compile it all when the final save button is hit? b

• Tomcat blankpage for default error page

  First off, I'm using Tomcat 5.5 and my .jsp's live in /webapps/foo/bar/*.jsp. I followed the directions here to set up a default 404 error page. In my TOMCAT_HOME/conf/web.xml I entered: <error-page> <error-code>404</error-code> <location>/error.html</location> </error-page> I dropped copies of a test error.html file into each of the dirs (I wasn't sure where /error.html was referring to): /webapps/ /webapps/foo/ /webapps/foo/bar/ Whenever I attempt to access a non-existent page in a browser at url's /foo/missingpage.html or /foo/bar/missingpage.html I'm redirected to my error page that exists in /foo/error.html. However, attempting to access a non-existent page in a browser at url /missingpage.html yields a blankpage. Or any permutation of /missingDir/missingfile.html will also yield a blank page. Any suggestions? Am I missing some extra configuration? Thanks PR

  I i just moved my website (asp.net) to the live environment. i realized they are running IIS 6 so all my nice and clean url rewriting doesn t work anymore. i was trying to implemente url rewriting using the .htaccess file i want to rewrite www.amicobio.co.uk/Menu.aspx as www.amicobio.co.uk/Food-Menu so in the .htaccess i set CaseInsensitive On Options +FollowSymlinks RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^Food-Menu$ Menu.aspx but it doesn t work it says The requested URL /a/m/amicobio.co.uk/public/Menu.aspx was not found on this server. obviously yhe path is wrong but what is /a/m/ ? and how do i fix it? all the files in amicobio.co.uk/public/ thanks

What am really looking at is the best approach to cache the the indexpublic script does get quite some hits and I would live to avoid the Zend MVC overhead if possible.

• Estimate serialization size of objects?

  In my thesis, I woud like to enhance messaging in a cluster. It's important to log runtime information about how big a message is (should I prefer processing local or remote). I could just find frameoworks about estimating the object memory size based on java instrumentation. I've tested classmexer, which didn't come close to the serialization size and sourceforge SizeOf. In a small testcase, SizeOf was around 10% wrong and 10x faster than serialization. (Still transient breaks the estimation completely and since e.g. ArrayList is transient but is serialized as an Array, it's not easy to patch SizeOf. But I could live with that) On the other hand, 10x faster with 10% error doesn't seem very good. Any ideas how I could do better?

For example, where I am, it is already 10 AM, whereas in Redmond it's still only 2 AM. That's probably the main thing, I guess. Can any SO users recommend ways to improve the existing countdown page so that it works correctly for users in any timezone? (Serious question - clearly this is a pit that is easy to fall into!)

• Definitive best practice for injecting, manipulating AJAX data

  Ever since my foray into AJAX, I've always used the "whatever works" method of manipulating AJAX data returns. I'd like to know what the definitive and modern best practice is for handling data. Is it best practice to generate the HTML via the server script and introduce the returned data on the onComplete function? Should XML/JSON be looked at first before anything? How about manipulating the returned data? Using .live() doesn't seem like it is the most efficient way. I've never seen a definitive answer to this question. Your expertise is much appreciated.

• Relative paths in spring classpath resource

  Hi all, I have a bunch of spring config files, all of which live under the META-INF directory in various subpackages. I have been using import like the following... <import resource="../database/schema.xml"/> So a relative path from the source file. This works fine when I am working with a local build outside of a jar file. But when I package everything up in a jar then I get an error that it cannot resolve the URL resource. If I change the above to an absolute path (with classpath:) then it works fine. Is there any way to use relative paths with ".." in when the configs are packaged in a jar or am I restricted to descending relative paths and absolute paths only? Thanks.

• Replicating MySQL DB to development machine - bad idea?

  I am considering replicating a production MySQL database to my development machine so I've always got current data. The production database is externally hosted. My development machine is behind an unreliable internet connection. It is entirely possible that the development machine could be disconnected from the internet for extended periods of time (hours). Would there be any adverse effect on the production database by doing this? (I don't strictly need live data - but it would be nice, and good excuse to dabble with replication. If the consensus is that this is a bad idea, I'll set up a daily job to import the previous night's backup into my development database)

• Run Exchange Management Shell cmdlets from Visual Basic/C#/.NET app

  Goal: Provide a web service using Visual Basic or C# or .NET that interacts with the Exchange Management Shell, sending it commands to run cmdlets, and return the results as XML. (Note that we could use any lanaguage to write the service, but since it is a Windows Box and we have Visual Studio 2008, it seemed like easiest solution would be just use it to create a VB/.NET web service. Indeed, it was quite easy to do so, just point and click.) Problem: How to run an Exchange Management Shell cmdlet from the web service, e.g, Get-DistributionGroupMember "Live Presidents" Seems that we should be able to create a PowerShell script that runs the cmdlet, and be able to call that from the command line, and thus just call it from within the program. Does this sound correct? If so how would I go about this? Thanks. Answer can be language agnostic, but Visual Basic would probably be best since that is what I loaded the test web service up in.

  Hello, I'm learning JQuery and am about to write some pages using intensively that library. I just learned that some user disable javascript on their browser (I didn't even know that was possible and/or necessary). Now, here's my question: What happens to my web application if a user disable Javascript? For instance, I'd like to display some screens using Ajax and commands such as 'InsertBefore' to bring in live a DIV that will display the result. So, if Javascript is disabled, I wonder what going to happen to all this work that relies on Javascript? I'm kind of lost. Thanks for helping

• how can I develop Apple Java Extensions on Windows?

  When I do multi-platform testing on Windows it gets annoying that Eclipse shows errors in the project because of the com.apple.eawt code that I have in a special Mac customization task. Worse yet, if I export a runnable jar on Windows, it won't run on mac because of the unresolved compilation problems. What's the best way to let Windows Java and com.apple.eawt live in peace? I can't see how I would be able to spin off the code to a jar, since it requires access to lots of the program's state. Thanks for your help!   I have a set of aspx pages that each live in their own directory and reference a single aspx.cs code behind file. This has worked fine previously because I never tried to pre-compile the site. IIS must have individually compiled each aspx, linking them to the contents of App_Code but never referencing more than one aspx at a time. Now that I'm trying to pre-compile the website using Web Deployment Projects I keep getting errors about the same class being found in multiple assemblies. I can't just drop the aspx.cs in App_Code and subclass it because it wouldn't be able to find the controls on the .aspx pages when compiling. Maybe I could explicitly define every control on the page in the .cs? But would that allow them to be wired up correctly? Any other ideas on how I can reference the same Page class from multiple .aspx pages and be able to pre-compile the entire website?

• Security precautions and techniques for a User-submitted Code Demo Area

  Hey folks Maybe this isn't really feasible. But basically, I've been developing a snippet-sharing website and I would like it to have a 'live demo area'. For example, you're browsing some snippets and click the Demo button. A new window pops up which executes the web code. I understand there are a gazillion security risks involved in doing this - XSS, tags, nasty malware/drive by downloads, pr0n, etc. etc. etc. The community would be able to flag submissions that are blatantly naughty but obviously some would go undetected (and, in many cases, someone would have to fall victim to discover whatever nasty thing was submitted). So I need to know: What should I do - security wise - to make sure that users can submit code, but that nothing malicious can be run - or executed offsite, etc? • Easily switching ConnectionStrings on publish to Azure

  I'm currently building an Azure Web Role. I am testing this project against a local database server on localhost. Then, when confident that the project is working, I publish it to Staging on Windows Azure. However, I also have to remember to change the connection string to point to the live SQL server on SQL Azure before deploying, and then change it back to localhost afterwards. Is there any nice way to automate this, or perhaps a different process to take to avoid the issue altogether? For example is there a way to have a configuration file for Azure that isn't updated with every deploy?

  Is there a way to add a redraw callback to a live screen object, i.e. not via inheritance? Reasoning: I want to draw an overlay from an extension for widget sdk (substituting defunct position:absolute), so the screen is created by the bbwp stub. I can get it by Ui.getUiEngine().getActiveScreen() and draw on it quite nicely, but I need a way to redraw when appropriate. Note: I've abandoned the approach to push the overlay as a screen, because i couldn't make it transparent / find a way to pass events through.

• msvsmon is locking up my pdbs

  During developement of my media center plugin (which has a few custom build steps to gac stuff and such) msvsmon has a rather annoying behaviour. First compilation usually goes well, but subsequent compilations complain about myplugin.pdb being locked Error 1 Unexpected error creating debug information file 'C:\Users\sam\source\myfile.PDB' -- 'C:\Users\sam\source\obj\Debug\myfile.pdb: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. If I exit VS and nuke the object directory, I am able to compile again. Also, if I kill off msvsmon.exe I am able to compile again (but can not debug) Has anyone seen this error? Are there any workarounds? I already disabled live semantic errors, just in case.

I understand how the accelerometer values will be used but I am sort of stuck on the programming front. Also it would be great if people could direct me to existing projects that utizlise the wiimote. Also can someone suggest what would be the best programming language to use for this. My current bet is on using Visual basic. Any sort of help is greatly appretiated.

• How do I limit the permissions of a C# program to read only on an SQLServer Database?

  Hi Guys, I have written some C# which connects to a live production database. I want to give my application read only access to the DB but am unsure how to achieve this. Is there any trivial way to get this done by amending the connection string? My understanding is that the application will logon with the credentials of the person running the application and hence may or may not have write access to the db based on that fact. Can I statically limit the permissions of the application so that if someone changes the program to do something devastating at a later date any manipulation will fail?
