• Entity Framework 5 vs Telerik OpenAccess ORM (specifically)

  I am starting a new project and want advice on choosing an ORM. I know this topic has been brought up before, but this topic is specific to either Entity Framework 5 (not 4) or Telerik OpenAccess ORM. The project will reside on Windows Azure and use Windows Azure SQL Database. I will migrate it to .NET 4.5 once 4.5 is live on Azure. I am currently a Telerik Ultimate Collection subscriber. Does anyone in the know have any pros/cons for this scenario? I am slightly leaning towards Telerik OpenAccess at the moment. Thanks

• Custom ASP.NET MVC cache controllers in a shared hosting environment?

  I'm using custom controllers that cache static resources (CSS, JS, etc.) and images. I'm currently working with a hosting provider that has set me up under a full trust profile. Despite being in full trust, my controllers fail because the caching strategy relies on the File class to directly open a resource file prior to treatment and storage in memory. Is this something that would likely occur in all full trust shared hosting environments or is this specific to my host? The static files live within my application's structure and not in an arbitrary server path. It seems to me that custom caching would require code to access the file directly, and am hoping someone else has dealt with this issue.

• How to get mp3 files to play in iPhone Safari web browser?

  How can I get an MP3 audio file to play in iPhone Safari (OS 3.1)? Currently, I am generating HTML e.g. <a href="file.mp3"><img src="sound.png" alt="Play audio"/></a> to play the file on clicking on the nested image. This works on Safari on OSX, but not on the iPhone. There, the content of the file is shown as text, but it does not appear to be a mime-type problem when checked with Live HTTP Headers from Firefox. I have found approaches referenced here. These require the Safari Plugins setting to be on in the preferences, which is why it did not previously work for me.

• How can I drag from a connected vertical list to the first item of a another list below with jQueryUI Sortable?

  Hi all, I have have several ULs vertically down a page. They are setup using jQueryUI's sortable(). My live example is: http://jsfiddle.net/pborreli/pJgyu/ I can drag from answers to make it the final element in questions. But when I drag from questions to answers the placeholder jumps to the second item in the questions list. At that point I can then drag it to the top. Any ideas why I am having this issue dragging from a list above to the first element of a list below? I've tried editing the padding and margin on both the lists and the sortable items. • Javascript timers

  I'm starting on a javascript MMORPG that will actually work smoothly. Currently, I created a demo to prove that I can move characters around and have them chat with each other, as well as see eachother move around live. http://set.rentfox.net/ Now Javascript timers are something I have not used extensively, but from what I know, correct me if I'm wrong, is that having multiple setIntervals happening at the same time doesn't really work well b/c it's all on a single thread. Lets say I wanted to have 10 different people nuking fireballs at a monster by using sprite background positioning with setInterval -- that animation would require 10 setIntervals doing repainting of the DOM for sprite background-position shifts. Wouldn't that be a big buggy? I was wondering if there was a way around all this, perhaps using Canvas, so that animations can all happen concurrently without creating an event queue and I don't have to worry about timers. Hope that makes sense, and please let me know if I need to clarify further.

• Access SDExplorer (System Folder) from my C# app

  Hello everyone I am trying out Windows Live SkyDrive, and I installed SDExplorer (http://www.cloudstorageexplorer.com/) It works by adding my SkyDrive folder to Windows Explorer, but it does not get a drive name or anything, so how can I access that drive/folder from my C# application? When I go into the folder and look at the address bar it says "Computer\SDExplorer". Directory.GetDirectories(@"\Computer\SDExplorer") does not work, because it translates to "C:\Computer\SDExplorer". I would like to be able to create a small application that can create folders and upload files to my SkyDrive account. Anybody know how these special folder/drives work? - I noticed MozyHome appears in the same way in my Windows Explorer.

• Ideal dev/test/QA environment for development

  I am working to rebuild my company's dev/test/QA environment. We have 10-15 programmers that are involved in a number of projects. They currently all develop locally on their PCs and use the dev environment for testing. We currently do not have a QA environment, so deployments are frequently a pain because bugs are usually found after something has gone live. Here's what I envision: Doing away with everyone's local admin privileges and making everyone develop on a dev server Create a QA environment that is identical to our production systems. This will allow them to test deployments. Create a new test environment that is more locked down than the dev server so that proper testing can be done. What are your thoughts? What is the best way to set up an environment like this? We develop ASP .NET applications using MS Visual Studio 2008 (if that helps).

• Millions of anonymous ASP.Net profiles!?

  Hi all, some advice needed! Our website receives approximately 50,000 hits a day, and we use anonymous ASP.Net membership profiles/users, this is resulting in millions (4.5m currently) of "active" profiles and the database is 'crawling', we have a nightly task that cleans up all the inactive ones. There is no way that we have 4.5m unique visitors (our county population is only 1/2 million), could this be caused by crawlers and spiders? Also, if we have to live with this huge number of profiles is there anyway of optimising the DB? Thanks Kev

• Why does IE8 change flash callback function into object?

  Hi Guys I have put 2 swf's (using swfobject 2) on the same website; One for playing a movie, and one for controlling the movie (I want to position them seperately, so they can't be in the same swf). I'm doing the communication between the two using javascript with jQuery, and externalcallback functions in both swf's. Everything is running smoothly on all browsers, but IE8. In IE8 I can only call the pause callback function in the control swf once. When it has been called it will not run properly the next time. After trying to debug what is happening live, using javascript's "type of" I have found that IE8 changes the callback function on the flash object from a function into an object when it has been triggered. Can anyone explain why this is happening? .. and maybe suggest how to avoid this? .. or change the object back to a function?

  Hi, I am using PHP Crypt_RSA (http://pear.php.net/package/Crypt_RSA) for encrypting and decrypting the contents. Contents are of 1kb size. Following are the results: keylength = 1024 Encryption function takes time: 225 secs keylength = 2048 Encryption function takes time: 115 secs I need to reduce this execution time as most of the live apache servers have 120 sec limit for execution time. How to reduce this execution time? RSA alorithm docs says the only 1024 - 2048 keys are generated. I ACTUALLY tried to generate larger key, but it always results in execution timeout.   I work at a Medical Billing company that's software handles many facets of the centers practice, including patients, treatments, etc. To be frank, the only thing I know about HIPAA is security is paramount. I was wondering if there were any training courses with an earned certification proving knowledge/experience that I could use to increase my worth to the company, and give them a selling point (we have HIPAA certified employees). I did a Google search and found this site, but it does not appear legitimate, and I'm trying to avoid any of those fake certification/degree sites. Does anyone know of any recognized and legitimate (preferably government sponsored) HIPAA certifications useful to programmers? If state is a factor, I live in Oklahoma.

  Hello, I am trying to pass a variable to an ajax request via jquery. I have a triggered event that defines the variable. I want to do this so that I can have one ajax request handle multiple urls. I have alerted the url and it come back fine, but when I plug it into the URL slot of a $.ajax request my targeted content does not load. • How can I access the bookmarks toolbar using only shortcuts in Firefox 3

  I am not interested in accessing the bookmarks menu or sidebar. The specific goal that I'm trying to accomplish is to be able to easily navigate (using only the keyboard) through the live bookmarks loaded from stack overflow by means of a feed reader and located on my bookmarks toolbar. Notes: I have found an add-on that supposedly does exactly what I need: Bookmark Keys, but unfortunately it doesn't work in firefox 3), and is not being currently maintained.   I have a post-update hook on my server, such that when I git push it does a pull on the live web directory. However, while the push always succeeds, the post-update hook sometimes fails.   I'm sitting at work, waiting for traffic to die down. The thought occurred to me. I know when I want to go home, why don't I have an app that watches traffic for me? I also know that there are a lot of smart people on stackoverflow. Where can I get live traffic data for the san francisco bay area region? The data source should be timely, accurate, and as high resolution as possible. I would like to build an app on top of a service, rather than watch google maps or watch another website.   I am trying to remove the last <li> element from a <ul> element only if it exceeds a particular length. For this, I am doing something like this: var selector = "#ulelement" if($(selector).children().length > threshold) { $(selector + " >:last").remove(); } I don't like the fact that I have to use the selector twice. Is there a shorter way to do this? Something like a "remove-if-length-greater-than-threshold" idea. I was thinking that maybe there is a way to do this using the live() function but I have no idea how.

• Dynamically pulling images from XML for iPhone App

  I've got my iPhone app pulling down live data content via XML nicely, and I've formatted the UITableView cells to display the content without too many headaches. However, at the moment, for each cell I'm just showing a default graphic for now, but I want this to be pulled down from my server too. The code snippet that grabs the image (which is actually in my project) is: cell.imageView.image = [UIImage imageNamed:@"TBC.png"]; But that will need to be the dynamic image. In my XML, am I better just returning 'mypic.png' and let the SDK determine the full path, like http://myapp.com/mypic.png or storing the full URL to the image in the XML?

• Using git branches for variations of a project

  I'm using git's branching feature to manage 5 variations of a small website. There are 5 versions that will all be live in different subdirectories on production. My approach to checking out the various branches to their respective folders was to: mkdir foo && cd foo git init git remote add origin git@...:project.git git fetch origin foo:foo Where "foo" is a given branch name. This was fine, except for that it pulled my entire repo (designs, as3 source, etc...) into those branch folders instead of just the public www folder, which is the only thing I really want on production. Is there a cleaner way to handle this? Git can't clone subdirectories right?

• ASP.NET MVC on IIS6

  Where can I find some good pointers on best practices for running ASP.NET MVC on IIS6? I haven't seen any realistic options for web-hosts who provide IIS7-hosting yet. Mostly because I don't live in the U.S. So I was wondering on how you best build applications in ASP.NET MVC and make it easily available to deploy on both IIS6 and IIS7. Keep in mind that this is for standard web-hosts, so there is no access to ISAPI-filters or special settings inside IIS6. Are there anything else one should think about when developing ASP.NET MVC-applications to target IIS6? Any functions that doesn't work? UPDATE: One of the bigger issues is the thing with routes. The pattern {controller}/{action} will work on IIS7, but not IIS6 which needs {controller}.mvc/{action}. So how do I make this transparent? Again, no ISAPI and no IIS-settings, please.
