• What 'best practices' exist for handing enum heirarchies?

  I'm curious as to any solutions out there for addressing enum heirarchies. I'm working through some docs on Entity Framework 4 and trying to apply it to a simple inventory tracking program. The possible types for inventory to fall into are as follows: INVENTORY ITEM TYPES: Hardware PC Desktop Server Laptop Accessory Input (keyboards, scanners etc) Output (monitors, printers etc) Storage (USB sticks, tape drives etc) Communication (network cards, routers etc) Software What recommendations are there for handling enums in a situation like this? Are enums even the solution? I don't really want to have a ridiculously normalised database for such a relatively simple experiment (eg tables for InventoryType, InventorySubtype, InventoryTypeToSubtype etc). I don't really want to over-complicate my data model with each subtype being inherited even though no additional properties or methods are included (except PC types which would ideally have associated accessories and software but that's probably out of scope here). It feels like there should be a really simple, elegant solution to this but I can't put my finger on it. Any assistance or input appreciated!

• MDX query for SSRS2008 parameter, to be used as filter in dataset

  What I want to do: The report parameter that the user can select from is a subset of the data available in a dimension. I have a query to retrieve this subset and it works fine. I am then trying to use the selection as a filter in a dataset. In the dataset properties, you can add a parameter based on the ones you have specified on the report, but when you look in the filters pane, there seems to be no way to select this. If I try and select something in there, it creates a whole new parameter and dataset. How can I get a dataset to consume and filter by a parameter that the user has selected?

• Why am I unable to Debug my ASP.NET website in Visual Studio?

  I used to be able to attach to my w3wp process and Debug my web application, but this is not working anymore. I have no idea what changed to break this. My breakpoints simply have the "breakpoint will currently not be hit. The source code is different from the original version." What I have tried: Did a solution Clean. Did a solution Rebuild. Deleted the bin folder Restarted Visual Studio Restarted IIS Restarted my Computer Added a simple Response.Write to ensure that the latest DLL is being used. It is. Made sure that Debug ASP.NET is checked in my project properties. It is. Made sure that all my projects are compiled in my build configuration. They are. But none of these help. I attach to w3wp, but my breakpoints never get hit. Any ideas?

  What is the difference between a rules engine and an expert system? Example1: Let's say that I have a program that determines the expiration date of a new driver's license. It takes inputs like visa expiration date, passport number, birthday, etc. It determines the expiration date of the driver's license from this input. It can even give an error if the input did not have enough valid identifications to allow a new driver's license. Example2: Let's say I am making an online version of the game Monopoly. I want the ability to change the rules of the game (say $400 for passing go or no one can buy properties until they land on the same property twice, etc). I have a module in the code to handle these rules. Are these both rules engines or are they expert systems? They both seem so similar. Is it just a synonym?

  Hi all, I want to able to create reusable user controls within my web app and i'm wondering on how to go about doing so. Should a user controls properties be visible to a form that's using it? What's the best way to go about loading the controls on the user control from the form thats using it? Should there be a public method within the control that allows you to load it from an external form or should the user control be loaded in the page load event Is it okay to nest user controls within user controls? etc... • Bind Data after TCP receive.

  I have this strange problem all day now. I dunno if you handled something similar. I used two different serializers and now i know its not this problem. Im sending some data over TCP Sockets. Serialize - Send - Deserialize, everything works ok, i can get my objects search through them, use they're properties! But, if e.g receive a BusinessObject[] and convert into List<BusinessObject>, then bind the list in a Control.DataSource = businessObjectList; BOOM! NotSupportedException. Tried it with 3 different controls. Same behaviour. My head is empty of ideas right now!! The Send TCP happens on Desktop Framework, Receive on Compact Framework. But i dont think this has to do with anything. I wish for an explanation on this!

• Spring 3 - Custom Security

  I am in the process of converting a legacy application from proprietary technology to a Spring based web app, leaving the backend system as is. The login service is provided by the backend system through a function call that takes in some parameter (username, password plus some others) and provides an output that includes the authroizations for the user and other properties like firstname, lastname etc. What do I need to do to weave this into Spring 3.0 security module. Looks like I need to provide a custom AuthenticationProvider implementation (is this where I call the backend function?). Do I also need a custom User and UserDetailsService implementation which needs loadUserByName(String userName)? Any pointers on good documentation for this? The reference that came with the download is okay, but doesn't help too much in terms of implementing custom security.

• How to implement ASP.NET membership provider in my domain model

  In a website, I need to integrate membership and authentication. So I want to use the functionality of ASP.NET Membership, but I have other custom stuff, that a "user" has to do. So I am sitting here with my pencil and paper, drawing lines for my domain model... And how can I best utilize the ASP.Net membership, but extend it to fill my needs? Should I create a class that inherits from a MembershipUser and extend it with my own properties and methods (and save this in a seperate table). Or should I let the MembershipUser be a property on my custom User/Client object? What would be a good solid way to do this?

• Documenting (XML) Application Settings in Visual Studio 2010

  Hi all, I recently created a (C#) project with Visual Studio (2010) and used some Settings (which I created under Properties). The only place I found where I can add some XML comments for my documentation, would be in Settings.Designer.cs. However this file is auto-generated so whenever I change the Settings, the comments are gone. Even Visual Studio gives started giving mewarnings, "Missing XML comment for publicity visibly type or member .... " My question here is: What is the neatest way to add XML comments to my Settings? Is there a better place than Settings.Designer.cs? Should I stop the file from being auto-generated? How? Any other way?

• Why does my custom component raise AVs in the IDE?

  I'm trying to write a simple component that will allow you to embed one or more SDL rendering surfaces on a Delphi window, using the SDL 1.3 APIs. It will compile and install just fine, but when I try to use the component in the form designer, it raises AVs whenever I try to access its properties in the object inspector, save the form, or delete the component, and placing one on a form then trying to run gives a linker error: it apparently can't read the DFM properly for whatever reason. The DLL can be found at http://www.libsdl.org/tmp/SDL-1.3-dll.zip and the source code to my component can be downloaded here. SDL.pas is a JEDI-SDL header file; the rest is my own code. I don't see any reason for this to raise AVs in the form designer. If I dynamically create the control at runtime I don't have any stability issues. Can anyone take a look at this and maybe provide some feedback that might help me clear it up?

  Hi, recently I discovered that "executing" a C program as a release build instead of a debug build optimizes the code and makes it run much faster. This is accessed through project properties configuration manager menu. I would like to know if this feature is the same in the professional version and the express edition of MVS 2010 in terms of speed optimization. I have the express edition. Also, I would like to know if C programs run with the same speed as in both the professional and express editions.   I want to create classes Car, Vehicle, and Airplane with the following properties: Car and Airplane are both subclasses of Vehicle. Car and Airplane both have an initWithString method. The acceptable input strings for Car's and Airplane's initWithString methods do not overlap. Vehicle is "almost abstract", in the sense that any initialized instance should be either a Car or an Airplane. It is possible to pass a string into Vehicle and get back an instance of Car, an instance of Airplane, or nil, depending on the input string. Any particular design pattern I should prefer? In particular for Vehicle's initWithString and/or newVehicleWithString methods.

• Custom Attributes on Class Members

  I am using a Custom Attribute to define how a class's members are mapped to properties for posting as a form post (Payment Gateway). I have the custom attribute working just fine, and am able to get the attribute by "name", but would like to get the attribute by the member itself. For example: getFieldName("name"); vs getFieldName(obj.Name); The plan is to write a method to serialize the class with members into a postable string. • Windsor Container: How to specify a public property should not be filled by the container?

  When Instantiating a class, Windsor by default treats all public properties of the class as optional dependencies and tries to satisfy them. In my case, this creates a rather complicated circular dependency which causes my application to hang. How can I explicitly tell Castle Windsor that it should not be trying to satisfy a public property? I assume there must be an attribute to that extent. I can't find it however so please let me know the appropriate namespace/assembly. If there is any way to do this without attributes (such as Xml Configuration or configuration via code) that would be preferable since the specific library where this is happening has to date not needed a dependency on castle.

  I have a workspace with two projects in it. One is a static library (we'll call it Project A). The other is a console app that links with the static library (we'll call it Project B). I went to Project B's properties and checked off Project A as a dependency of Project B. So I make a change to a file in Project A and rebuild Project B. It correctly discovers the changes to the file in Project A and rebuilds Project A. However, when it gets to Project B it says: Target is up to date. Nothing to be done. How can I tell it to run the linker everytime Project A is changed?

  Hey, I would like to create a SDP media field with its attributes, and there are a few things I don't understand. I've skimmed and read the relevant RFC and I understand most of what each field means, but what I don't understand is how do I derive from the Audio/Video Format of the JMF, which parameters of the format compose the rtpmap registry entries I need to use. I see many times the fields m=audio 12548 RTP/AVP 0 8 101 a=rtpmap:0 PCMU/8000 a=rtpmap:8 PCMA/8000 a=rtpmap:101 telephone-event/8000 a=fmtp:101 0-16 a=silenceSupp:off - - - - a=ptime:20 a=sendrecv these are received from the pbx server I'm connecting to, what do they mean in the terms of the JMF audio format properties.   After signing a jar , we can retrieve the public keys from jar using Certificate[] cert = jarentry.getCertificates(); Once certificate is extracted we can save this to a new keystore as trusted cert. Once this is done , then second user can sign any jar using this certificate , isn't ? I want to distribute content as jars , contents will contain properties files for a application init. I want to make sure that an user is not capable to rebuilding the property files using the certificate he extracted from jarentry. In the code which reads the jar contents i am checking that jar is signed with my certificate only and also checking that jar is not tampered with . But the issue came to my mind that if i am able to extract the cerificate from jar then why don;t a third guy ? Can any one help me in this............

  Hello, The question I'm asking is kind of subjective. I've seen twice, while exercising with real projects such as StoreFront, both Repository and Services. Sometimes they can just be folders or projects attached to the solution. But they contain classes and interfaces. So, I'd like to know what goes to the repository and what goes to the services. So far, I was familiar with repositories (we put methods and properties in the repository to reduce the complexity in the controller). How about the services? So, ASP.NET MVC: What's the difference in concept between Service and Repository? (Maybe none) My question is Kind of subjective, but I'd like to make sure that I'm not missing anything. • Visual Studio 2010 SQL Server Database Project - Ignore Stored Procedures and Functions

  I really like the new SQL Server Database projects in Visual Studio 2010. I also like using the "Generate DROP statements for objects that are in the target database but that are not in the database project" option in the deployment properties. However, I do not want to manage Stored Procedures and Functions using this interface; I have another tool for that. Every time I do a build and deploy, VS will drop my stored procedures that I have created with my external program. I would like to essentially "ignore" stored procedures and functions. Is there a way to ignore stored procedures and functions when building SQL Server Database projects? I won't be able to use the "Generate DROP statements..." option if I want to use my external tool for stored procedures and functions.

• .NET Framework 4 RC on Windows server 2008 R2

  I've just installed .NET 4 on Windows SErver 2008 R2 x64 and I am getting 500 Internal Server Error with an ASP.NET MVC application which was previously running fine on 3.5. The application was upgraded from targeting 3.5 to target 4 and I personally built it today on my development machine (changed in VS - Properties to .NET Framework 4). On the server I installed .NET Framework 4 Client profile RC for x86 and x64 platforms and I created a new .NET 4 application pool in IIS and placed the web app in it. Also I have custom errors turned Off in web.config but even so no detailed error is displayed - just the plain IIS 7.5 500 Internal Server Error. Any suggestions?
