• How to fix: mac keyboard ignores "first" key pressed

  UPDATE 2012.03.19: the MBP described in this post is now broken and recycled (logic board fried). The replacement doesn't manifest the same problems. I tend to believe the problem originated in the keyboard firmware of the old MBP. Every now and then, usually after I haven't pressed a key in some time, sometimes minutes, sometimes seconds, my MBP will "swallow" the the first key I press ... say I'm logging into "superuser.com" .. I start typing my username and the textbox will show "exu" instead of "lexu" This is driving me nuts! My guess is the keyboard or it's controller goes to sleep and fails to wake up propperly ... What can I do about this? PS: I've already installed "MacBook, MacBook Pro Keyboard Firmware Update 1.0"

• SQL Server - stored procedure suddenly become slow

  I have written a stored procedure that, yesterday, typically completed in under a second. Today, it takes about 18 seconds. I ran into the problem yesterday as well, and it seemed to be solved by DROPing and re-CREATEing the stored procedure. Today, that trick doesn't appear to be working. :( Interestingly, if I copy the body of the stored procedure and execute it as a straightforward query it completes quickly. It seems to be the fact that it's a stored procedure that's slowing it down...! Does anyone know what the problem might be? I've searched for answers, but often they recommend running it through Query Analyser, but I don't have have it - I'm using SQL Server 2008 Express for now. • Delay before booting with laptop

  I have almost the same problem as in Delay before booting? My computer is a practically new (couple months) Lenovo X200 Tablet (System Model 7449FXG). So when I press the power button, the indicator light that means "computer is on" turns on, but nothing else happens for about 5 mins, after that the computer starts booting normally. The same happens also on restart. And no USB or any other device for that matter is plugged in to the computer. And at the delay time the monitor is blank - actually not on at all.

• Using old RAID configured disk after new disk has been used in the controller

  I have Dell Poweredge T100 server with Dell SAS 6 and two hard disk on RAID 1. Last week the server died including one RAID 1 hard disk. We sent the server for repair and the problem with PSU was fixed. But the repair guys also checked the RAID controller by configuring new RAID with their test hard disk. Now if I install one working RAID 1 disk and one new disk, will the RAID controller let me continue my old RAID 1 and resync the new disk and continue? What I fear is the RAID controller will want the test hard from repair guys. Thus I have to re configure RAID 1 forcing me to wipe the working disc. If so, I've to backup the working disc, reconfigure RAID 1 and reinstall? Or is there better way? Note: I'm using DELL SAS confiugratio utility to manage RAID. (Press CTRL+C after BIOS)

  I have install ubuntu & GNOME (say, with minimum possible number of packages). I can login and do anything as I want. However, there is a nasty thing: Whenever I loggin in, I see this message: Error The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_FastUserSwitchApplet" Do you want to delete the applet from your configuration [Don't Delete] [Delete] If I press [Delete] then the error won't be shown anymore. However, for every new created account, the message shown again (use created using sudo adduser user_name). Since I clone this OS into several virtual instance, and create new account on these instances. I wonder if there is a way to configure my ubuntu so that new created user don't have to see this annoy message? Thanks

• Cannot enter BIOS due to broken screen

  Lately my laptop(hp g42 247sb) screen is damaged, so I hook it up with a external monitor(LG something) and it works fine now. But the only annoying thing is I cannot navigate the BIOS menu for some tweaking because the BIOS not shown on the external monitor,instead, it only shown on the broken laptop screen, and it only output to my external monitor when windwos/os is loged-on. So, is there anyway I can force output during BIOS/BOOT/POST to my external monitor? Things I have done and didn't work: (1)Set my LG monitor as primary display on both window properties and Intel Graphics panel (2)Enter the bios (F10 key) and press the fn+F4 key(change display output). (3)Disable and uninstall my internal screen(broken laptop screen) using device manager and restart, but windows(bios?) install it back on log-on. Please help me!

• Programs keep waiting for external disk to spin up - how to ignore disk?

  Like many Mac users I have an external Firewire disk hooked up to my Mac to be used by Time Machine. This works very well, backup-wise. The problem is that very often when I use a Mac application and try to open a file, the file selection dialogue window hangs until the external disk has spun up. I never ever want to open a file on the external disk. Sometimes this happens even when I just want to save a file I already saved (i.e. type something and press meta-s). Is there anything I can do about this?

  I'm trying to add gridlines to a output density plot in Mathematica. The plot is generated by a long calculation in Mathematica and when I do the plot I forget to add the Mesh-True options. I don't want to do all the calculation and generate the plot again since it takes a long time. Is that possible to add the gridlines or mesh lines to plot ONLY using the output plot at hand? For example, If I have a plot p. Is it possible to add the mesh lines ONLY manipulate p? In a ordinary one dimensional plot, this will work p1 = Plot[Sin[x], {x, -3, 3}]; Insert[p1, GridLines -> Automatic, -1] But when I try the density plot, it seems the gridlines is always under the plot, and can be seen only at the image margin area. p2 = DensityPlot[Sin[x + y^2], {x, -3, 3}, {y, -2, 2}, PlotRangePadding -> 0.2]; Insert[p2, GridLines -> Automatic, -1] Updata The Mesh option on the output plot will not work because Mesh is not a options of a Graphics: Show[p2,Mesh->True] will give a message "an unrecoginzed option name(Mesh) was encountered while rendering a Graphics" Thanks.

• Presentation Issue in an Unordered List

  I'm having an issue with correctly presenting items in an unordered list. The labels are floating left and the related spans that are long in length are wrapping and showing below the label. I need a solution that keeps the related spans in their respective columns. In other words, I don't want long spans to show under the labels.   I'm testing JPA, in a simple case File/FileVersions tables (Master/Details), with OneToMany relation, I have this problem: in FileVersions table, the field "file_id" (responsable for the relation with File table) accepts every values, not only values from File table. How can I use the JPA mapping to limit the input in FileVersion.file_id only for values existing in File.id? • Uncrackable anti-piracy protection/DRM even possible? [closed]

  I hope that this is programming-related enough. You have probably heard about Ubisofts recent steps against piracy. (New DRM requires a constant connection to the Ubisoft server) Many people including me see this as intolerable because the only ones suffering from it at the end are the paying customers. Now to the actual question(s): Ubisoft justified this by calling this mechanism "Uncrackable, only playable by the paying customers". Is a so called uncrackable DRM even possible? You can reverse-engineer and modify everything, even if it takes long. Isn't Ubisoft already lying by calling something not crackable? I mean, hey - With the game you get all its content (textures, models, you know) and some anti-piracy mechanism hardcoded into it. How could that be "uncrackable"? You can just patch the unwanted mechanisms out ---- "Pirates" play the cracked game without problems and the paying customers are the idiots by having constant problems with the game and being unable to play it without a (working) internet connection. What are the points Ubisoft sees in this? If they are at least a bit intelligent and informed they know their anti-piracy protection won't last long. All they get is lower sales, angry customers and happy pirates and crackers.

• How to forward blocked ports by ISP

  So I've been trying to setup a TeamSpeak 3 server on my pc but ports (9987,10011,30033) are blocked by my ISP, I've contacted them to unblock them but they didn't accept, and it's the fastest ISP in my city (as living in a 3rd world country) so it's not a good idea to connect to another ISP. The thing is, I've tried Your-Freedom to connect to tunnel my connection & SocksCap. The problem is, when TS works with SocksCap it doesn't show a WAN-IP that friends will use to connect to my server It says "Needs to be Requested" and when I press the Request button, I get nothing. So, any idea what's wrong if someone has done this before? or if you have any other suggestion to run a TS server, would be very glad to hear it and really appreciate that. P.S. as I've mentioned before, living in a 3rd world country, makes me unable to buy a VPS even the cheapest one cause there's no Visa, Credit, or paypal. so that won't work. Thanks in advance.

  I am getting this error on code that used to work. I have not changed the code. Here is the full error: The CLR has been unable to transition from COM context 0x3322d98 to COM context 0x3322f08 for 60 seconds. The thread that owns the destination context/apartment is most likely either doing a non pumping wait or processing a very long running operation without pumping Windows messages. This situation generally has a negative performance impact and may even lead to the application becoming non responsive or memory usage accumulating continually over time. To avoid this problem, all single threaded apartment (STA) threads should use pumping wait primitives (such as CoWaitForMultipleHandles) and routinely pump messages during long running operations. Some google research indicates I could #import MSCORLIB.TLB (or put it in path), but I can't get that to compile either. Any tips?

• Automatically mount a remote folder on boot

  I'm trying to mount a Windows folder on my Ubuntu machine on start up. I've tried following this page here, modifying /etc/fstab and appending sshfs#my_user@remote_host:/path/to/directory <local_mount_point> fuse user 0 0 to it, but it fails; on start up, I get an error saying that the mounting failed, and I can press S to skip or M to recover manually. I also tried following this page here, appending /usr/bin/sshfs -o idmap=user my_user@remote_host:/path/to/directory <local_mount_point> to the /etc/rc.local file, but this doesn't help either; Ubuntu just boots up normally without mounting. I have Cygwin installed on my Windows machine, and I can run everything smoothly, such as sshing without passwords, and mounting it manually. I've also tried to run the modified rc.local file $ /etc/rc.local, and it works perfectly, but I just can't seem to get the folder mounted on start up. Can someone help me?

• Keyboard causing freezes

  My problem started on Windows XP: a computer (that was working fine for many years) had a problem, that I can't quite remember (may have been to do with the startup process) - but I solved it by swapping the keyboard with one on another machine. Now for several years the problematic keyboard has been working fine - on my main machine that runs Ubuntu. I also dual boot Windows XP - and have had no problems on either OS. However I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 Natty (pre-alpha) and found that any keyboard press causes freezes. (All still works fine on Ubuntu 10.10 and 10.04 and Windows XP) Just wondering why I might be experiencing this? Seems strange to me that's its not consistent.

• Laptop Backup Software (Corporate)?

  I wondered if any of you who have a fleet of laptops are using anything to back them up, and if so what? In particular I'm looking for a solution that is totally hands-off once installed i.e. the user doesn't have to do anything, press anything, remember to change something when their domain password changes etc. Right now we use Druva Insync which I have to say is pretty damned good, however our license is up for renewal in a couple of months so I want to be sure it's the best solution before renewing - the only other vaguely comparable product that I know of is from Atempo but the cost of a SQL Server license is a big problem there. • Offline Mapping API

  Are there any services available that allow me to manipulate maps in an offline setting? I am working on a project that requires me to take a map and based on features on the map, generate a game world. I have looked at a few of the API's for different providers: Google, ms, etc. The API's I looked seem to be strictly showing a user a map. I am looking for something that allows me to create a derivative of a map (the Gameworld), that will never be seen by the public, and is only used by the game engine. However one caveat is that I would like to be able to link the derivative created for use by the game engine, with something I can show the user. As an example. Think of a cross country racing sim. Users cannot control the vehicles directly in this game, they can only control the cars setup, driver, etc. I create a gameworld from a map. The gameworld data (driver position, etc) is overlayed onto a real map. A race might last several days. The only interaction users have with the real map is viewing their position on the map, and where they are in relation to the others. I don't want to violate the terms of the API here. I read Googles API TOS, and it seems to me that creating the gameworld would violdate their TOS. The features I really need are the following The ability to locate a specific place on the map by lat/long The ability/rights to grab those maps and save them as an image file temporarily for processing The ability/rights to store a gameworld that is based on the real map The ability to show a user a map with an overlay (this is optional. I can use googles API, or any other one that supports lat/long.)

• Issue with Capslock key on Laptop

  For some reason my laptop has a mind of its own and the Caps Lock tends to come on whenever it feels like it. I thought it was an software issue from that reasoning, but I later cleared the OS and then reinstalled it hoping to fix the problem, but it didn't. Not only does it do that it also comes on and off whenever the letters A, S, and left shift key are pushed. So I assummed it was a keyboard issue and that the keyboard needs to be replaced, but it has one of those touch pad cap lock buttons also, because even when I press that button it tends to not react. So how can that be fixed with a keyboard replacement or is that connected still? • Enter / Return key stops working

  I have a Dell Latitude E5400 laptop running Windows 7. Everything runs fine on it for days then I suddenly notice the enter/return key is no longer working e.g. I could be writing an email, press enter for a new line but it doesn’t ‘register’ – so no new line. I thought it might be some dirt under the key perhaps so I tried running the Windows onscreen keyboard but the Enter key on that doesn’t work either. A reboot always fixes the problem but it’s a pain. Any ideas a) how to fix it and b) out of interest, is there some other key combination that I can use as an alternative to using the Enter key when I need to?

• WesternDigital SmartWare - still problematic?

  I've seen a lot of bad press on WD SmartWare (I think it comes on most WD backup devices now, such as their MyBook product line), mostly related to how it's impossible to remove properly or replace. There are allegations (I couldn't tell how true they were) that it has/is a rootkit, as well. Most of the articles are a couple of years old, so I'm wondering if SmartWare is still just as problematic as it was. Does it still have a nasty rootkit reputation and should I just stick with the Windows 7 built-in backup system, or is the current SmartWare generation improved and better behaved?
