• RAID1 rebuild fails due to disk errors

  Quick info: Dell R410 with 2x500GB drives in RAID1 on H700 Adapter Recently one of drives in RAID1 array on server failed, lets call it Drive 0. RAID controller marked it as fault and put it offline. I replaced faulty disk with new one (same series and manufacturer, just bigger) and configured new disk as hot spare. Rebuild from Drive1 started immediately and after 1.5 hour I got message that Drive 1 failed. Server was unresponsive (kernel panic) and required reboot. Given that half hour before this error rebuild was at about 40%, I estimated that new drive is not in sync yet and tried to reboot just with Drive 1. RAID controller complained a bit about missing RAID arrays, but it found foreign RAID array on Drive 1 and I imported it. Server booted and it runs (from degraded RAID). Here is SMART data for disks. What about if I dd faulty disk to new one from linux running on USB/CD? Also, if anyone have more experiences, what could be causes for those errors? Crappy controller or disks? Disks are about 1 year old, but it is pretty unbelievable to me that both would die within so short timespan.

• zLib on iPhone, stop at first BLOCK

  I am trying to call iPhone zLib to decompress the zlib stream from our HTTP based server, but the code always stop after finishing the first zlib block. Obviously, iPhone SDK is using the standard open Zlib. My doubt is that the parameter for inflateInit2 is not appropriate here. I spent lots of time reading the zlib manual, but it isn't that helpful. Here is the details, your help is appreciated. • Error when pushing to Heroku - StatementInvalid - Ruby on Rails

  I am trying to deploy my first rails app to Heroku and seem to be having a problem. After git push heroku master I get an error saying that relation "tags does not exist. I understand that without knowledge of my application it will be hard to help but I am wondering if someone can point me in the right direction. I have checked the schema.rb file and also been over all my migrations and there doesn't seem to be a problem there. The error message lead me to believe that I left something out of my routes.rb file but can't seem to find anything there either. Perhaps just some help deciphering this message. • Cannot connect to MySQL with JDBC - Connection Timeout - Ubuntu 9.04

  I am running Ubuntu and am ultimately trying to connect Tomcat to my MySQL database using JDBC. It has worked previously but after a reboot the instance now fails to connect. Both Tomcat 6 and MySQL 5.0.75 are on the same machine Connection string: jdbc:mysql:///localhost:3306 I can connect to MySQL on the command line using the mysql command The my.cnf file is pretty standard (Available on request) has bind address: 127.0.0.1 I cannot Telnet to the MySQL port despite netstat saying MySQL is listening I have one IpTables rule to forward 80 - 8080 and no firewall I'm aware of. I'm pretty new to this and I'm not sure what else to test. I don't know whether I should be looking in etc/interfaces and if I did what to look for. It's weird because it used to work but after a reboot it's down so I must have changed something.... :). I realise a timeout indicates the server is not responding and I assume it's because the request isn't actually getting through. I installed MySQL via apt-get and Tomcat manually. • Skipping scheduled self-tests and predicting drive EOL

• WCF and Firewalls

  Hi guys, As a part of learning WCF, I was trying to use a simple WCF client-server code . http://weblogs.asp.net/ralfw/archive/2007/04/14/a-truely-simple-example-to-get-started-with-wcf.aspx but I'm facing strange issues.I was trying out the following. Client(My) IP address is : 192.168.2.5 (internal behind firewall) Server IP address is : 192.168.50.30 port : 9050 (internal behind firewall) Servers LIVE/External IP (on internet ) : 121.225.xx.xx (accessible from internet) When I specify the above I.P address of server(192.168.50.30), the client connects successfully and can call servers methods. Now suppose if I want to give my friend (outside network/on internet) the client with server's live I.P, i get an ENDPOINTNOTFOUND exceptions. Surprisingly if I run the above client specifying LIVE IP(121.225.xx.xx) of server i also get the same exception. I tried to debug the problem but haven't found anything. Is it a problem with the company firewall not forwarding my request? or is it a problem with the server or client . Is something needed to be added to the server/client to overcome the same problem? Or are there any settings on the firewall that need to be changed like port forwarding? (our network admin has configured the port to be accessible from the internet.) is it a authentication issue? • Arch Linux with an nginx/django setup refuses to display ANYTHING

  I'm on Amazon Ec2, with an Arch Linux server. While I truly am loving it, I'm having the issue of actually getting nginx to display anything. Everytime I try to throw my hostname into the browser, the browser states that it's not available for some reason - almost as if the host doesn't even exist. One thing I'd like to know is, how can I get this up and running? Is there a specific arch linux configuration I have to do to make it web accessible? I have port 80 open, as well as port 22. I've tried using gunicorn, python-flup, and nginx. The thing is that Django itself is working fine, and my permissions to the document root of the where the site files are stored is 777. Ontop of that, I have a git repo which works perfectly fine, and django, python, and runfcgi all start without issues. The same goes for gunicorn, when I do a gunicorn_django -b 0.0.0.0:8000 in my document root. • Automatically keeping two excel data tables in-sync (w/out VBA)

  I'm putting together a workbook for tracking a stock portfolio. The primary sheet contains a table with the list of the transactions. From this I would like to create an overview table on another sheet with only one row per unique stock symbol that includes things like cost basis, returns, etc. The problem is that nothing I've tried updates the overview table correctly when rows are added to the transaction table. And even then the range of the table isn't extended down to include new rows as they become valid. • Dropped connections between Linux Servers in Data Center

  I have a number of linux servers at a us-based datacenter. The servers were installed by the hosting company, and are running fedora core. We're experiencing problems with dropped connections. The issue seems to be that when we attempt to connect to one of the other servers after a period of inactivity, the first connection attempt will fail, and sometimes the second. However, after that the connection succeds and it works for a while. This happens for both mysql connections and raw socket connections, but only seems to occur when connecting to some of our servers. The confusing part is that it some of the servers for which we see different behaviors have identical hardware configuration and software. For example, it happens when connecting to a server called mysql2, but not for a server called mysql3. These servers were installed at the same time, but the same specifications. The problem can be reproduced somewhat reliably, but only after waiting fifteen minutes to half an hour. This makes it hard to diagnose, and even harder since I'm not really sure what to look for. I realize that connections sometimes failed, and that we should write our applications to compensate for this but these servers all in the same data center. Why would it matter if two servers haven't communicated for a while? Does anybody have an idea what might be causing this? Is it a server configuration problem or a network problem that I should contact the hosting company about. What do I tell them to look for? Unfortunately our experience has been that the support staff doesn't investigate problems in depth unless we give them detailed directions.

• Tomcat stops responding to JK requests

  Hello. I have a nasty issue with load-balanced Tomcat servers that are hanging up. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The system I'm running Tomcat 6.0.26 on HotSpot Server 14.3-b01 (Java 1.6.0_17-b04) on three servers sitting behind another server that acts as load balancer. The load balancer runs Apache (2.2.8-1) + MOD_JK (1.2.25). All of the servers are running Ubuntu 8.04. The Tomcat's have 2 connectors configured: an AJP one, and a HTTP one. The AJP is to be used with the load balancer, while the HTTP is used by the dev team to directly connect to a chosen server (if we have a reason to do so). I have Lambda Probe 1.7b installed on the Tomcat servers to help me diagnose and fix the problem soon to be described. The problem Here's the problem: after about 1 day the application servers are up, JK Status Manager starts reporting status ERR for, say, Tomcat2. It will simply get stuck on this state, and the only fix I've found so far is to ssh the box and restart Tomcat. I must also mention that JK Status Manager takes a lot longer to refresh when there's a Tomcat server in this state. Finally, the "Busy" count of the stuck Tomcat on JK Status Manager is always high, and won't go down per se -- I must restart the Tomcat server, wait, then reset the worker on JK. Analysis Since I have 2 connectors on each Tomcat (AJP and HTTP), I still can connect to the application through the HTTP one. The application works just fine like this, very, very fast. That is perfectly normal, since I'm the only one using this server (as JK stopped delegating requests to this Tomcat). To try to better understand the problem, I've taken a thread dump from a Tomcat which is not responding anymore, and from another one that has been restarted recently (say, 1 hour before). These have the following stack trace: java.lang.Object.wait ( native code ) java.lang.Object.wait ( Object.java:485 ) org.apache.tomcat.util.threads.ThreadPool$ControlRunnable.run ( ThreadPool.java:662 ) java.lang.Thread.run ( Thread.java:619 ) I don't know of the internals of Tomcat, but I would infer that the "Waiting" threads are simply threads sitting on a thread pool. So, if they are threads waiting inside of a thread pool, why wouldn't Tomcat put them to work on processing requests from JK? Solution? So, as I've stated before, the only fix I've found is to stop the Tomcat instance, stop the JK worker, wait the latter's busy count slowly go down, start Tomcat again, and enable the JK worker once again. What is causing this problem? How should I further investigate it? What can I do to solve it? Thanks in advance.

It seems like from that link it's impossible since using a where predicate because entity class doesn't know what any of the properties are until I pass them in. Lastly, I need some way of setting a new object as the return type set to the implementation type, in nhibernate (what I am trying to convert from) it was simply this line that did it: ImplentationType entity = default(ImplentationType); However default is an nhibernate command, how would I do this for LINQ? EDIT: getOne doesn't seem to work even when just going off the base class (this is a partial class of the auto generated LINQ classes). I even removed the generics. • Single-port 2600 router with 2900XL switch

  I have a setup, where the single port 2600 router is in port 0/2 in the switch, outside network is on port 0/1, and the rest (0/3-0/24) should be clients for the second network that would be managed by the 2600 router. I configured everything with two VLANs: 100 for outside (0/2-0/24), 200 for inside (0/1-0/2). 0/2 is a trunk port for the two VLANs. The issue that came about is that I can't have two VLANs on at once: software doesn't allow it. Now, I can ping the outside network devices (172.16.7.1, 172.16.7.103), and even google (8.8.8.8) from the router, but not the switch. Devices on connected get a DHCP lease properly but can't ping outside the network, just the router - 172.17.7.1 and the switch itself, 172.17.7.7. • Strange intermittent SQL connection error, fixes on reboot, comes back after 3-5 days (ASP.NET)

  For some reason every 3-5 days our web app loses the ability to open a connection to the db with the following error, the strange thing is that all we have to do is reboot the container (it is a VPS) and it is restored to normal functionality. Then a few days later or so it happens again. Has anyone ever had such a problem? I have noticed a lot of ANONYMOUS LOGONs in the security log in the middle of the night from our AD server which is strange, and also some from an IP in Amsterdam. I am not sure how to tell what exactly they mean or if it is related or not. Server Error in '/ntsb' Application. • LDAP over SSL with an EFI Fiery printer

  I've got a printer with a Fiery running 8e Release 2. I can authenticate users against AD using the LDAP configuration, but I can only get it to work if I don't use SSL/TLS, and only if I use SIMPLE authentication. Right now, it's authenticating using a fairly low-impact user, but it's also the only system on our network that's not using LDAPS. I can get AD info fine over LDAPS using ldp.exe from my machine, our firewall, our mail filter, our linux boxes, etc. The only problem child is the Fiery. I've added the LDAP server certificate as a trusted cert to the Fiery, but after I check the box for Secure Communication and change the port to 636, pressing Validate results in a dialog box coming up saying: LDAP Validation Failed Server Name invalid or server is unavailable. I've tried changing the server name to use just the name, the FQDN, and the IP address, and changed it to another server, just to see if it was just this AD server that was fussy with the Fiery. EDIT: removed LDP output, added packet capture analysis from wireshark: The conversation seems pretty normal to me, up to the point where the Fiery terminates the connection after the server sends back a handshake response. Maybe they messed up their TLS implementation? I'm trying support, but it's been fairly useless so far. The cert is a SHA-2 (sha256RSA) 2048-bit certificate. Also, it looks like the Fiery is specifying TLS 1.0. Looking at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa374757(v=vs.85).aspx, I'm not seeing SHA256 and TLS 1.0 combination being supported by SChannel. headdesk perhaps that's why, after the DC changes the cipher spec, the connection is terminated by the Fiery? • Site-to-Site PPTP VPN connection between two Windows Server 2008 R2 servers

  We have two Windows Server 2008 R2 machines, one in our main office and one in a new office which we have just moved offsite. The main office has previously been handling client-to-server PPTP VPN connections. Now that we have moved our second server out of office, we want to set up a demand-dial or persistent VPN connection from the second server to the primary. Using a custom setting RRAS profile, we have successfully managed to set up a site-to-site VPN connection so that from the second server itself, it can access any of the devices in the main office and communicate back. However, any connected machines in the second office cannot use this connection, even when using the second server as gateway. The demand-dial interface is setup from the Second Server dialing into Main Server and a static route set up on RRAS for 192.168.0.0 with subnet mask 255.255.0.0 pointing down this network interface. The main office has the network of 192.168.0.0/16 (subnet mask 255.255.0.0). The second office has the network of 172.16.100.0/24 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0). What steps do we need to take to ensure traffic from the second office PCs going towards 192.168.x.x addresses use the VPN route? Many Thanks in advance for any help the community can offer. • Slow git clone and fetch

  I setuped gitosis on a linux server following this tutorial: http://scie.nti.st/2007/11/14/hosting-git-repositories-the-easy-and-secure-way We are using git on our windows machines with TortoiseGit and msysgit. Pushing changes to the server is pretty fast, but when we want to clone or fetch changes from the remote server, it begins really fast (800k/s) and then drop pretty fast to around 3 to 30k/s and it can take forever to update. git-pull for small update is fast, but as soon as we have to download something of more than a few MB, it is slow. We are switching from SVN to git and this is holding us back from using git full time. Thanks!

Earlier today I had to switch from the old server to the new one, and the old one is no longer online. However, after I had migrated everything and switched it all over, I discovered a bunch of undelivered mail in the queue. It got delivered to the local mailboxes on the old server, so now there are a bunch of messages on it that I'd like to move to the new server. The new server has already received new messages, so I need to merge the files together somehow. For each user with an email of [email protected], there are files like this on both servers: /home/vmail/customer.com/username/maildirsize /home/vmail/customer.com/username/courierpop3dsizelist /home/vmail/customer.com/username/new/1271481177.Vca01I6006bM580357.mailhost.mydomain.com Can I simply copy the hundreds of files in the various new directories on the old server to the corresponding new directories on the new server? Will the maildirsize and courierpop3dsizelist files get updated automatically, or do I need to do something to update them?

• Java thread dump where main thread has no call stack? (jsvc)

  We have a java process running as a daemon (under jsvc). Every several days it just stops doing any work; output to the logfile stops (it is pretty verbose, on 5-minute intervals) and it consumes no CPU or IO. There are no exceptions logged in the logfile nor in syserr or sysout. The last log statement is just prior to a db commit being done, but there is no open connection on the db server (MySQL) and reviewing the code, there should always be additional log output after that, even if it had encountered an exception that was going to bubble up. • /usr/bin/python (Python 2.4) was deleted on CentOS 5. I compiled from source but yum is still broken. How can I get everything back to the way it was?

  I saw a lot of other questions like this but none of them answered the exact part I am having trouble with (actually installing the Python RPM). Someone on my system deleted /usr/bin/python and /usr/bin/python2.4 on my 64 bit CentOS 5.8 installation. I recompiled Python 2.4 from source, but now whenever I try to yum install anything I get the following error: [root@cerulean-OW1 ~]# yum install httpd There was a problem importing one of the Python modules required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was: No module named yum Please install a package which provides this module, or verify that the module is installed correctly. It's possible that the above module doesn't match the current version of Python, which is: 2.4 (#1, Dec 16 2012, 09:16:56) [GCC 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat 4.1.2-52)] If you cannot solve this problem yourself, please go to the yum faq at: http://wiki.linux.duke.edu/YumFaq I checked http://wiki.linux.duke.edu/YumFaq and it said the following: If you are getting a message that yum itself is the missing module then you probably installed it incorreclty (or installed the source rpm using make/make install). If possible, find a prebuilt rpm that will work for your system like one from Fedora or CentOS.   I'm trying to make just a few minor tweaks to the default template of a checkbox. Now I understand how to make a new template from scratch, but this I do not know. I did manage to (I think?) extract the default template via the method here. • Development on Windows 7; Web server on Linux - How to share Apache web root?

  I've got a LAMP server that I want to use as a local web server. I've got a Windows 7 machine that I want to use as my development machine. The machines will be on the same LAN (or the Windows box will be VPNed into the LAN). My questions is, what is the best way of sharing the web root of the LAMP server so that I can edit the files on the remote Windows 7 machine and how do I go about configuring this on the Linux machine? (Fedora 16) I would like the solution to be as easy to use as possible with preferably no extra steps required to save/edit/upload files from my IDE on my Windows 7 machine. I'm thinking either a Samba or NFS share are the way to go but I'm concerned I'm going to run into issues with permissions and unix/windows file handling. Is one better than ther other for my use case or is there a better alternative solution? I'm currently using Windows 7 Professional which doesn't have NFS support but would upgrade to Ultimate which does have NFS support if it's the best solution.

• Fonts, goes back to default size
