• Setting up SSL on JBoss 5

  How can I enable SSL on JBoss 5 on a Linux (Red Hat - Fedora 8) box? What I've done so far is: (1) Create a test keystore. • Setting up MySQL Linux slave with a Windows master

  I'm running a MySQL 5.0 database server on Windows Server 2008. The total size of the database is about 1Gb. I make daily backups, but I'd like to step up to having a slave server for extra protection. My thinking was that I wouldn't need the expense of a Windows machine to do this, and a Linux "cloud server" from RackSpace would do the job well for quite a low cost. However I have little experience with Linux, so I have a few questions... Does this sound like a good idea? Is there anything wrong with linking Windows and Linux MySQL servers? Does Linux have the equivalent of Remote Desktop Connection? If so can I use this from a Windows machine? Would a particular Linux distro be well suited to this task? RackSpace offer ArchLinux, CentOS, Debian, Fedora and Ubuntu. My immediate thinking is to go with Ubuntu as I've heard it's more friendly for people coming from a Windows background. Any comments you have would be very appreciated! Phil

• Can you run Android 2.2 Froyo or 2.3 Gingerbread in a VM?

  I came across a how-to guide for running Android 1.7 in a virtual machine (VirtualBox), but 1.7 is old. I haven't been able to find a Android 2.2 or 2.3 image anywhere, does anyone have any ideas on how to virtualize newer Android OS's? Preferably a free virtualization solution like VirtualBox. • Additional Security Measures for Syslog over SSH

  I'm currently working on setting up some secure syslog connections between a few Fedora servers. This is my currently setup 192.168.56.110 (syslog-server) <---- 192.168.57.110 (syslog-agent) From the agent, I am running this command: ssh -fnNTx -L 1514:127.0.0.1:514 [email protected] This works just fine. I have rsyslog on the syslog-agent pointing to @@127.0.0.1:1514 and it forwards everything to the server correctly on port 514 via the tunnel. My issue is, I want to be able to lock this down. I am going to use ssh keys so this is automated because there will be multiple agents talking to the server. Here are my concerns. Someone getting on the syslog-agent and logging into the server directly. I have taken care of this by ensuring that syslog_user has a shell of /sbin/nologin so that user can't get a shell at all. I don't want someone to be able to tunnel another port over ssh. Ex. - 6666:127.0.0.1:21. I know my first line of defense against this is to just not have anything listening on those ports and it's not an issue. However I want to be able to lock this down somehow. Are there any sshd_config settings on the server that I can use to make it where only port 514 can be tunneled over ssh? Are there any other major security concerns I'm overlooking at this point? • Modern alternatives to Java

  I have been a Java developer for 14 years and have written an enterprise-level (~500 kloc) Swing application that uses most of the standard library APIs. Recently, I have become disappointed with the progress that the language has made to "modernize" itself, and am looking for an alternative for ongoing development. I have considered moving to the .NET platform, but I have issues with using something the only runs well in Windows (I know about Mono, but that is still far behind Microsoft). I also plan on buying a new Macbook Pro as soon as Apple releases their new rumored Arrandale-based machines and want to develop in an environment that will feel "at home" in Unix/Linux. I have considered using Python or Ruby, but the standard Java library is arguably the largest of any modern language. In JVM-based languages, I looked at Groovy, but am disappointed with its performance. Rumor has it that with the soon-to-be released JDK7, with its InvokeDynamic instruction, this will improve, but I don't know how much. Groovy is also not truly a functional language, although it provides closures and some of the "functional" features on collections. It does not embrace immutability. I have narrowed my search down to two JVM-based alternatives: Scala and Clojure. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. I am looking for opinions. I am not an expert at either of these languages; I have read 2 1/2 books on Scala and am currently reading Stu Halloway's book on Clojure. Scala is strongly statically typed. I know the dynamic language folks claim that static typing is a crutch for not doing unit testing, but it does provide a mechanism for compile-time location of a whole class of errors. Scala is more concise than Java, but not as much as Clojure. Scala's inter-operation with Java seems to be better than Clojure's, in that most Java operations are easier to do in Scala than in Clojure. For example, I can find no way in Clojure to create a non-static initialization block in a class derived from a Java superclass. For example, I like the Apache commons CLI library for command line argument parsing. In Java and Scala, I can create a new Options object and add Option items to it in an initialization block as follows (Java code): final Options options = new Options() { { addOption(new Option("?", "help", false, "Show this usage information"); // other options } }; I can't figure out how to the same thing in Clojure (except by using (doit...)), although that may reflect my lack of knowledge of the language. Clojure's collections are optimized for immutability. They rarely require copy-on-write semantics. I don't know if Scala's immutable collections are implemented using similar algorithms, but Rich Hickey (Clojure's inventor) goes out of his way to explain how that language's data structures are efficient. Clojure was designed from the beginning for concurrency (as was Scala) and with modern multi-core processors, concurrency takes on more importance, but I occasionally need to write simple non-concurrent utilities, and Scala code probably runs a little faster for these applications since it discourages, but does not prohibit, "simple" mutability. One could argue that one-off utilities do not have to be super-fast, but sometimes they do tasks that take hours or days to complete. I know that there is no right answer to this "question", but I thought I would open it up for discussion. Are there other JVM-based languages that can be used for enterprise level development?

• When Clearing an ObservableCollection, There are No Items in e.OldItems

  I have something here that is really catching me off guard. I have an ObservableCollection of T that is filled with items. I also have an event handler attached to the CollectionChanged event. When you Clear the collection it causes an CollectionChanged event with e.Action set to NotifyCollectionChangedAction.Reset. Ok, that's normal. But what is weird is that neither e.OldItems or e.NewItems has anything in it. I would expect e.OldItems to be filled with all items that were removed from the collection. Has anyone else seen this? And if so, how have they gotten around it? Some background: I am using the CollectionChanged event to attach and detach from another event and thus if I don't get any items in e.OldItems ... I won't be able to detach from that event. CLARIFICATION: I do know that the documentation doesn't outright state that it has to behave this way. But for every other action, it is notifying me of what it has done. So, my assumption is that it would tell me ... in the case of Clear/Reset as well.   My app will allow users to create a personalised list of events from a large list of events. I have a table view which simply displays these events, tapping on one of them takes the user to the event details view, which has a button "add to my events". In this detailed view I own the original event object, retrieved via an NSFetchedResultsController and passed to the detailed view (via a table cell, the same as the core data recipes sample). I have no trouble retrieving/displaying information from this "event". I cant glean any more information through the use of debugging tools, with my knowledge of them. 1) Is this a valid way to compile and store an editable list like this? 2) Is there a better way? 3) What could possibly be the deallocated instance in error? -- I have now modified the Event entity to have a to-many relationship called "myEvents" which referrers to itself. I can add Events to this fine, and logging the object shows the correct memory addresses appearing for the relationship after a [event addMyEventObject:event];. The same failure happens right after this however. I am still at a loss to understand what is going wrong. I was fetching the event in question using a NSFetchedResultsController with a NSPredicate which I was releasing after I had the results. Retrieving values from the entities returned was no problem, but when I tried to update any of them it gave the error above. It should not have been released. oustanding part of my question What is a good way to create this sub list from a list of existing items in terms of a core data model. I don't believe its any of the ways I tried here. I need to show/edit it in another table view. Perhaps there is a better way than a boolean property on each event entity? The relationship idea above doesn't seem to work here (even though I can now create it). Cheers.

• Linux wireless disconnect every 20 minutes

  My laptop uses CentOS 6.3 with kernel 2.6.32-279.el6.x86_64. My wireless adaptor is Intel Corporation Centrino Wireless-N 1000. My wireless connection always get off after about 20 minutes. The network applet shows the connection is still on with good signal strength, but I just cannot load any web pages even the configuration page of the wireless router. The problem will continue until I disable and reconnect the wireless. Other devices like my cell phone uses the same wireless network without the problem. Even yesterday I'm using the same laptop with Fedora 17 without this problem. I also searched the internet and someone said running services NetworkManager and network simultaneously may be a problem. But I cannot stop any one of them because: if I stop network and start NetworkManager, the network service will start automatically; if I stop NetworkManager and run network, it says "Device does not seem to be present, delaying initialization." when trying to bringing on the wireless. What shall I do to get rid of the problem? Thank you very much!

• DNS problems on CentOS fresh install

  I'm having some DNS issues on a new box I'm installing with CentOS 6.2. I am able to look up names using nslookup, dig, or host. I am able to ping machines by name or by IP address. However, when I try other tools, such as ssh, wget, or yum, they are unable to resolve names. • users unable to add registry keys to HKCU

  I may not have this 100% correct so need some clarification. Are normal users on a 2003 terminal server allowed to add registry keys the their own HKCU section in the registry, or are they only allowed to edit existing ones? The reason I ask is that we have 3 keys that we need to add for each user on login. I thought it would be as simple as having a straightforward batchscript run that silently adds the keys for the user. Here is what I used: regedit.exe "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\example.reg" When the user runs this batch scipt, they see nothing as you would expect, but the keys are not added. If I simply run the .reg file as the user, it asks if I want to add the key, but then has an error saying there was an error accessing the registry. Do I need something a bit more complex to accomplish this task. I have done the following: Traced the id_color value to the create method, still got replaced by a 3 Hardcoded the value in the DAO create method, still got replaced by a 3 Called the procedure from the MySQL Workbench, it worked fined so I assume something is happening in the create method, any help is really appreciated.

  My problem is completely opposite to anything I could find as I need to run my monitor in its NOT native resolution and have perfect font rendering. I recently got myself Ultra HD 2560x1440 27 inch monitor (Fujitsu P27T-7 LED) and I have an issue with this. I would call it personal but I'm afraid it's not as few people already agreed with me. I do programming and the text on UHD is way to small for comfortable usage. I changed the resolution to regular Full HD (1920x1080), it became just right but the text is looking slightly blur now, in comparison to both its natural UHD resolution and/or to my old 23 inch NEC. I am pretty frustrated and not sure what to do and how to make fonts look just as sleek as they should? I can't work in UHD resolution (my vision is 100% perfect), simply if calculated, picture size with Ultra HD (2560x1440) on 27 inch is around 30% smaller than Full HD (1920x1080) on 23 inch. In order to have same font size, if compared with Full HD 23 inch, 27 inch Ultra HD monitor must be around 32 inches in size. If I set my new monitor to regular Full HD 1920x1080, then the fonts' size are just perfect but the quality is not as it's blurry? Could anyone please help me out with an advise of how to solve this problem? Spec: nVidia 560 Ti with DVI-D port on Fedora 20. EDIT 1: Changing fonts doesn't really help as everything else doesn't look the way it should. EDIT 2: The monitor is buzzing on 2560x1440 so badly in case there are lots of lines on the screen, like file listing. If I type ls /usr/bin it makes such nasty irritating sound. When resolution goes to 1920x1080 it's a bit better. Any idea why?

• How to back up a database with thousands of files

  I am working with a Fedora server that runs a customized software package. The server software is quite old, and its database consists of 1,723 files. The database files are constantly changing - they continually grow and changes are not necessarily appended to the end. So right now, we currently back up every 24 hours at midnight when all users are off of the system and the database is in an internally consistent state. The problem is that we have the potential to lose an entire day's worth of work, which would be unrecoverable. So I'd like to know if there is a way to take some sort of an instantaneous snapshot of these database files that we could back up every 30 minutes or so. I've read about Linux LVM snapshots, and am thinking that I might be able to do accomplish the goal by taking a snapshot, rsync'ing the files to a backup server, then dropping the snapshot. But I've never done this before,so I don't know if this is the "right" fix. Any ideas on this? Any better solutions? Thanks!

• Remote mouse pointer not visible in VNC

  I used VNC desktops as a kind of collaboration server, as shared planning and pair programming environment for a long time. Now my latest iteration uses a KVM guest running Fedora 17 "Beefy Miracle", the Cinnamon desktop environment and an X11VNC server. The X11VNC server is automatically started with the desktop environment using the following command: x11vnc -localhost -many -shared -display :0 -bg My problem is that depending on the VNC client, the mouse pointer of the remote system which is shown through VNC is not synchronized to my client. I really need this, so I can see what my partner is doing on the desktop. When using Vinagre 3.2.1 on Ubuntu Oneiric Ocelot (11.10) or Vinagre 2.3.0.3 on Debian Squeeze (6.0) and I don't have my local mouse pointer inside the VNC view, I cannot see the mouse pointer of my remote system, nor its movement. When using TightVNC on Windows 7, I can recognize a mouse pointer trace for very short amounts of time after moving the mouse, but it is not clearly visible. Using UltraVNC on Windows 7 the mouse pointer is clearly visible all the time. With Gnome 2 I never had any problems with remote pointer synchronization, using exactly the same clients. I suspect this could have something to do with Cinnamon's dependency on 3D acceleration. On the other hand, it doesn't change anything to start Cinnamon's fallback environment Cinnamon 2D. Update: Same effect when I use Gnome 3.

• jquery dynamic select doesn't submit values

The first one is categories, and selecting a category from it will populate the variables multi-select box with values specific to the selected category. Selecting variables and then clicking "add selected" will populate the target select box will those variables. The problem is, print_r shows that the values in the target select box aren't passed upon submit, and I don't understand why... • Linux Startup Script after Gnome Login

  I have a Fedora server that I want to spawn an interactive python script after the user logs on. This script will ask the user for various types of information for configuring the system or it will search for the previous config file and show them the predefined information. Originally I was going to put this in rc.local or make it run with init.d but that messed up the boot due to how the script is spawned. So I would like this script to run as soon as the user logs in to Gnome. I've searched around quite a bit and found this answer which appears to be exactly what I want, but it isn't working the way I want it to. Below is my entry. [Desktop Entry] Name=MyScript GenericName=Script for initial configuration Comment=I really want this to work Exec=/usr/local/bin/myscript.sh Terminal=true Type=Application X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=true Whenever I login, nothing happens. So I then did a test to modified "myscript.sh" to just echo some text to a file and it worked fine. So it appears the portion that isn't working is the script popping open a terminal and waiting for the users input. Are there any additional options I need to add to make this work? I can confirm when I run /usr/local/bin/myscript.sh from the CLI it works fine. I have also tried adding "StartupNotify=true" and still no luck. Edit @John - I tried moving my Exec= to /usr/local/bin/myscript-test and this is what myscript-test contains. #!/bin/bash xterm -e /usr/local/bin/myscript.sh Yet again, when I just run the myscript-test it works fine. However when I put that in my autostart, nothing happens. Edit 2 - I did a few more tests and it did start working but I had to remove Terminal=True before the xterm would pop. Thanks for your help.

• Autounmounting USB keys with FAT filesystem on Linux (RHEL5)

  For security reasons, I have two workstations i front of me, and I can only transfer data between them through a USB key. As you can imagine, it can get quickly tiresome, but the most annoying is having to unmount the things before removing them. Not umounting them results in missing files most of the time, even if I remove them a while after having last written to them. Now, since they're only used for transferring smallish files, and each are basically written once and read once, I don't need the fancy pansy caching infrastructure that makes clean unmounting a necessary step. And since the data is always a copy of something I have at hand, I don't care if the filesystem croaks from time to time. But anyway the system doesn't need to force that on me, it could simply make sure everything is committed with a second, and works synchronously. Then when I remove the key, nothing is lost. Is there a way to do this? I would appreciate any other tips on handling this situation. Edit: it appears the situation has changed between RHEL5 and Fedora up to F11 on one hand, and F12 on the other. The latter use DeviceKit-disk, and I haven't quite figured out how to do this. The method provided below in gconf does not work anymore.
