• chrooting user causes "connection closed" message when using sftp

  First off I am a linux newbie so please don't assume much knowledge. I am using CentOS 5.8 (final) and using OpenSSH version 5.8p1. I have made a user playwithbits and I am attempting to chroot them to the directory home/nginx/domains/playwithbits/public I am using the following match statement in my sshd_config file: Match group web-root-locked ChrootDirectory /home/nginx/domains/%u/public X11Forwarding no AllowTcpForwarding no ForceCommand /usr/libexec/openssh/sftp-server # id playwithbits returns: uid=504(playwithbits) gid=504(playwithbits) groups=504(playwithbits),507(web-root-locked) I have changed the user's home directory to: home/nginx/domains/playwithbits/public Now when I attempt to sftp in with this user I instantly get the message: connection closed Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? I have made a bit of progress by using chmod to set permissions recursively of all files in the directly to 700. • How can I verify that my SSD is performing as it should?

  EDIT: Okay, so I've no idea what caused the change, but after trying loads of different things to work out what was wrong, I've rerun the WEI (about the 4th time in total) and the score has jumped to a far more respectable 7.3. I'm going to leave well alone now :) I've got a brand new 256GB SSD (Crucial CT256M225) which should have stellar performance. However, on my (also brand new) Dell Studio 1557 with Windows 7 Professional 64 bit, it's only giving a performance index of 5.9. I realise the performance index should be taken with a bit of a pinch of salt, but I wonder whether something's wrong. Given this paragraph from this MSDN article on Windows 7, I'd expect to see a high 6.X or possible a 7.X figure: In Windows 7, there are new random read, random write and flush assessments. Better SSDs can score above 6.5 all the way to 7.9. To be included in that range, an SSD has to have outstanding random read rates and be resilient to flush and random write workloads. In the Beta timeframe of Windows 7, there was a capping of scores at 1.9, 2.9 or the like if a disk (SSD or HDD) didn’t perform adequately when confronted with our random write and flush assessments. Feedback on this was pretty consistent, with most feeling the level of capping to be excessive. As a result, we now simply restrict SSDs with performance issues from joining the newly added 6.0+ and 7.0+ ranges. SSDs that are not solid performers across all assessments effectively get scored in a manner similar to what they would have been in Windows Vista, gaining no Win7 boost for great random read performance. How can I diagnose any performance issues with either the disk or how Windows 7 is handling it? Are there any particularly good tools you'd recommend? One note of curiosity: I couldn't install the firmware update (to 1916) until I changed my BIOS handling of the drive to ATA mode; after installing the firmware I tried to boot the Windows installation DVD - but that only worked after turning it back to AHCI mode (which I've left it in). Installing Windows 7 took longer than I expected - it sat at the "Windows is loading files" prompt for a very long time. Likewise it was on "Expanding files (0%)" for a long time. Since installation it's been fine though - but I don't know whether it's really providing quite as beefy performance as it should. EDIT: My netbook with the 64GB equivalent drive has a performance index of 6.6...

• Mac Air Bootcamp Windows 7 Installation and USB3 Hurdles

  I am trying to load windows 7 on a new Mac Air(OS X 10.9 Mavericks) using Boot camp, a downloaded windows 7 iso file, and USB3 flash drive. No obvious issues with stepping through the initial phases of boot camp and disc partition, but when the system reboots to load windows setup/install from the USB3 flash, it stalls after a few screens and gives a "missing cd/dvd drive" error. I have read similar posts regarding this fail that imply there is possibly a windows 7 compatibility concern with USB3, and that if a USB2 port is available....or if you can change your BIOS to make your USB3 look like USB2...then you can get around this error. Unfortunately I only have USB3 ports on this system, and it appears accessing the PC equivalent "BIOS" on the new Macs is very difficult....and if you screw it up you can ruin the system. Does anyone have any suggestions? I should also mention that there is NOT a CD/DVD drive on the Mac Air....and I can't migrate to Windows8 (for various reasons). Any help is much appreciated!!

Is there any way to automate it? Wireless connections have a nice little checkbox ("automatically connect when this network is in range") but I couldn't find anything similar for VPN connections. • ssh login successful, but scp password gives me "Permission denied"

  I'm trying to get some blogging software up on an organizational remote server. I tried to set up a SSH Key but was having problems and decided that getting the blog up and running was more important than dealing with the SSH Key issue, so I ssh-keygen -R remoteserver.com. Now I can successfully login with ssh -v [email protected] and the correct password. Once logged in I can move around and read any file and directory that I should be able to read. But when I try to edit an existing -rw-r--r-- file with VIM, it shows up as read-only, if I try to edit permissions I get chmod: file.ext: Operation not permitted, and if I try to scp a new file from my local machine I'm prompted for the remote user's password, and then get scp: /home/path/to/file.ext: Permission denied. Since I didn't have any of these problems before I tried to set up the ssh key, I suspect these anomalies are a side effect of that, but I don't know how to troubleshoot this. So what does a foolish server-newb, such as myself, need to do to get edit capability back as a remote user? Addendum 1: My userids are different between my local machine and the remote server.   I'm new to keynote and as such have not figured out the correct workflow yet. While the transitions (builds) and actions are nice, how are you supposed to work with several objects if the previously edited objects are still being displayed in the original state, thus obstructing the view on new elements that I would like to display later? Is there a way to step through the builds like in presentation mode?

  Is it possible to enable this WAP to do WPA1? I've played with all sort of settings, but no matter what I set it to, it does WPA2. Even if I choose TKIP as the cipher. I need WPA for compatibility reasons. I'm running 12.3(7)JA1 firmware. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I'm trying to get this company away from WEP, but WPA2 offers too many problems with their visitors (XP SP2 clients need to install patch, etc). I'll probably add a radius while I'm at it, but would love to get WPA + AES going. Or at least WPA + TKIP.

• Installing VMware ESXi 4.0 on Dell 1950: Cannot open vmkboot.gz

  I am trying to install VMware ESXi 4.0.0 U1 on a Dell 1950 server via a bootable CD-ROM. I keep getting this error right at the start: Cannot open vmkboot.gz I checked that the CD-ROM drive is not to blame by installing Debian Etch using that drive. I tried several different versions of ESXi (3.5, 3.5 Dell edition, 4.0 Dell edition) and they all give me an error at the same place. I also tried installing from a USB "thumb" drive but got the same error. I checked with the VMware HCL (Hardware Compatibility List) and the Dell 1950 is listed as being compatible. Here are some server details: Two 1.6 GHz Xeon 5110 CPUs (ID: 06-0F-B) BIOS version 2.2.6 Any ideas on what might be the issue?

  I just upgraded from ubutnu 9.04 to 9.10, and everything was working fine before the upgrade but now when ever I play a file in a video player everything has a blue/green tint. Its like my video went into Smurf mode! for some reason flash based video is still fine, ex. hulu/youtube both play just fine.

  I've got a Dell laptop that I use as a software developer box at work and find that the drive is usually the bottleneck. I'd like to hook up two 10k RPM drives that are striped for performance. I've looked for drive cases with RAID but there don't seem to be very many choices and I'm worried about compatibility with the drives (preferably SATA 2). Also I don't have a SATA connection on my machine so it'll have to USB 2.0 for now. Am I headed down the right path or am I missing a much simpler configuration?

  So I have been searching the web for days, looking for a solution to my problem. Now my only hope are you guys. I have installed Owncloud successfully on my Windows Server 2008R2. It all runs smoothly and I can connect without problems. So first checks are OK. Now I wanted to change the default data directory from my server to a shared folder on my NAS (Synology DS1813+, DSM 5.0-4493 Update 3). Tried following: changing the directory in config.php I changed the path in the config file from : "C:\inetpub\wwwroot\myfolder\data" to "\NASIP\cloud". by doing this the owncloud server only shows: Code: Select all Daten-Verzeichnis (\192.168.2.4\Cloud\data) ist ungültig Bitte stelle sicher, dass das Daten-Verzeichnis eine Datei namens ".ocdata" im Wurzelverzeichnis enthält. I also tried coping the files that were created in the local data storage, to the share on the NAS. No Luck. Now I tried it by mapping a network drive and using that in the config.php But still no luck. I get the same message with the missing .ocdata file. Now I tried the "External Storage APP" that comes with owncloud I thought that at least I could add the share as an external storage. But this also does not work. tried UNC, Mapped Drive Name (Z:) but nothing helped. So now I'm turning to you.. Does anyone have expirience with this kind of setup? Or can you even tell me how to make it work? (default or external storgae, I don't care anymore ) Using NAS (Synology DS1813+, DSM 5.0-4493 Update 3), Owncloud 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, IIS7 I got an answer on an other forum: The second option is how it should be done: 1. Put OC in maintenance mode 2. Mount (mapping in the windows world) your NAS directly to your OS 3. Copy the local data directory to the NAS mount 4. Ensure the permission is setup to give the web user access to the NAS mount 5. Update OC config.php with the new data path 6. Disable OC maintenance mode And this seems like the right way.. Ensure the permission is setup to give the web user access to the NAS mount I guess this is where I am not sure. What user is it exactly on my Server that is making the requests to the NAS? If the user is for example "IUSR" I can just create an account on my synology NAS and give him full access to my share? (But what is IUSRs password?) I have full root ssh access to my NAS, so if you can tell me what chmod or chown I need to use on my cloud folder...

• How can I set Windows Server 2008 juntion points to Every Read Allow?

  We have apps running on Windows Server 2003 and now 2008 as well. Unfortunately some of our code relies on inspecting the Documents and Settings directory which no longer exists in Windows 2003. It looks like there are "Junction Points" set up for backwards compatibility - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb756982.aspx. But it seems like nothing I can do can get me access. I basically need to be able to call from a command line on both 2003 and 2008: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe Which translates in Windows 2008 to : C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe I've tried setting up my own "Documents and Settings" folder in 2008 but it won't let me as that seems to be reserved for these Juntion Points.

• 64-bit linux kernel only seeing 3 of 4GB after upgrade...

  Hey everyone. I am running Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit on my macbook. I had 2GB of ram before, and everything ran great. I just upgraded to 2x2GB (4GB), but my system only sees 3GB of it. OS X, which I am dual booting, sees all 4GB. Also, my video performance is incredibly lacking. Before the upgrade my compiz benchmark was full at 80fps, and now it is at 22fps with very choppy window dragging. Has anyone ever heard of this on a 64-bit kernel? • xp stop error 50 page fault in non paged area

  I have a laptop that fails to boot with the BSOD error: "page_fault_in_non_paged_area" STOP: 0x00000050 (0xEC6B738D, 0x00000000, 0x8649308C, 0x00000000) The laptop has 2 memory DIMMs. I removed each DIMM one at a time and the error remained with just one DIMM installed. I have run spinrite 6.0 on the hard drive no errors found. Booted to recovery mode and ran CHKDSK /R, it found and fixed errors but still gets the stop error. Any other suggestions to try?

  My title is probably not very clear but here's the deal. I'm a software engineer with experience in many languages but my current focus is Windows/Web applications using C# and .NET. I'm currently running a personal blog using WordPress and love it. I need to setup a website for my consulting company and, while I enjoy the canned benefits of a CMS like WordPress, would like to build a custom ASP.NET site. Either way my current LAMP host is not secure so I'm looking to switch and looking for a reliable alternative. My ultimate wish list of requirements would be a cost-effective (currently spending ~$120/yr for web+domain hosting) host that would allow me to deploy my own ASP.NET code and host a WordPress blog (IIS w/ PHP to external MySQL or separate LAMP site). Thanks in advance for your recommendations (Google is not good for this type of search :-D) Edit: I'm fine if I have to ditch WordPress. Really I'm just looking for a good ASP.NET host, the WordPress compatibility would be a plus.
