How are "Json.org"-like specs graphs called and how can I generate them?

In http://www.json.org Douglas Crockford shows the specs of the JSON format in two interesting ways: In the right side column he lists a text spec that looks like a YACC or LEX listing. In the main body of the homepage, he put several images that gives us a simple way to visually understand the valid sequences that composes a JSON string. Those images look like a description of the path that a finite state automaton would follow when parsing the JSON string. Wich are the names (if any) of that listing format and that kind of graphics? Is there any software that renders a source file containing the specification into that kind of images?

Movie Poster Colors Over Time

This spectrograph-like image records tens of thousands of movie posters over the course of a century, showing a steady shift towards posters that emphasize black, purple, and blue color tones. It’s a neat look at how the color tastes of an entire industry shift over time. Vijay Pandurangan had a disagreement with a friend about whether or not movie posters were becoming darker/bluer over time. Rather than simply agree to disagree, he whipped up a piece of code that downloaded and analyzed thousands of movie posters proving that, in fact, there was a slow and steady shift towards darker and bluer posters. Which CMS for photo-blog website?

I need to add photo-blog to a site that I'm recently working on. It is very simple site so the blog doesn't have to be very sophisticated. What I need is: a CMS that allows me to create simple blog-like news with one (or more) images at the beginning and some description/comment below. Preferably, I would like to create something that works like sites like these two: http://www.photoblog.com/dreamie or http://www.photoblog.pl/mending/ it must be customizable. I want to integrate it's look as much as possible with current page: http://saviorforest.tk preferably, it should provide some mechanizm for uploading and storing images at the server. I thought about wordpress, but it seems to be a little bit too complicated for such simple task. Do you know any simple and easy in use CMS that would work here?

Random freezes on MBP9,2 + Ubuntu 12.04

I have a MBP9,2 (mid-2012) at work. I put Ubuntu 12.04 on it after some efforts. Everything works more or less now, except I get random freezing every now and then. I have to power off the machine to restore it. Wondering if anyone had the similar issue. My setup: MacBook Pro 9,2 (mid 2012) Ubuntu 12.04 (installed using the special image for Macs) No proprietary drivers xmonad on Unity 2D So far the freezes look to be sporadic and spontaneous.

Is self learning Computer Science/programming over a college degree worth it? [on hold]

I am currently in college and I just want to skip to learning and gaining experience in what I came here to do, but unfortunately the first two years of college is general classes that everyone takes. I have a couple of friends that are also in Computer Science and we were planning on starting a small company/self employment. Would dropping out and gaining experience and a portfolio qualify for smaller companies if I look for a job there? What programs should I learn, and which ones should I learn before others to better understand the programs that are harder?

How to discriminate vertical from horizontal scroll on Kubuntu/KDE mouse action for switch Desktop

Currently trying out KDE, and I'm a big user of multiple workspaces/desktops while I work. I've noticed that essentially, KDE isn't able (or doesn't bother?) to tell between my mouse's standard vertical scroll, and the left/right scroll that it has. Just FYI, my mouse has a pretty sensitive scroll wheel with no discernible "clicks" so I can easily make my desktop look like it's on crack. Here's what I'd like: vertical scroll does nothing when applied on desktop, but left/right scroll causes me to switch to previous/next desktop. Here's what happens now - per settings for Desktop Settings -- Mouse Actions: Whether I scroll up/down or if I click left/right, I switch desktops. Thanks for your help

My Last Day at Microsoft

Wow I cant believe it has already been 13 years at Microsoft. I have had a great time here and learned so much from the smart and passionate people I work with as well as the incredible developer community around .NET. Is IE9 a modern browser?

At http://people.mozilla.com/~prouget/ie9/ there is a very provocative article entitled "Is IE9 a modern browser?". There is a rebuttal by Tim Sneath at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/tims/archive/2011/02/15/a-modern-browser.aspx that is well worth a look. Certainly IE9 is already superior to its predecessors. My comment on the matter is that those that consider IE9 to be non-standards compliant, should submit tests to the W3C to demonstrate the non-compliance. Upon acceptance by the W3C, all the competing browsers can then be re-tested. I prefer objective tests to subjective opinion. I have used IE9 and on some sites such as Hotmail, it is noticeably faster. I have so far been unable to apply the promised IE9 lockout of spyware cookies. With Firefox, I just instal NoScript and never enable spyware sites.

XML/XSL Module 04.03.05 is now officially released.

XML/XSL Module 04.03.05 is a maintenance release. Download is available from Codeplex. Changes were required to fix issues caused by conflicts with a new namespace in DotNetNuke 5.3. as the XML module did not use fully qualified namespaces everywhere. Please upgrade to XML 4.3.5 before upgrading your DNN version to 5.3.1 and above. In our hotel room after Day 1 of MIX Gus from NV Interactive and I had an hour to kill for dinner. 20 minutes later wed managed to port the existing NZ Cricket Match Centre into a Windows Phone 7 Series application.
