  • Backward Compatibility with Silverlight 4 applications

Each release of Silverlight it is the goal to make sure existing Silverlight applications continue to work. Since I think what this means causes some confusion Im going to do my best to explain what we mean by this. Silverlight 3 application working with Silverlight 4 Okay, scenario 1 is I have a Silverlight 3 application (XAP), will that still work as-is in Silverlight 4? Yes, this is the situation we refer to as backward compatibility. What this means is that existing compiled XAPs under previous...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • aticonfig detects all graphics cards, but amdcccle shows the cards as disabled

    - by DevZer0
I been having the strangest problem since few days ago. I have 3 ATI graphics cards and the aticonfig --list-adapter shows the following output * 0. 01:00.0 AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series 1. 02:00.0 AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series 2. 05:00.0 AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series when i do aticonfig --adapter=all --initial -f it generates the correct X config also. but after rebooting the output only show on primary monitor and when i look in amdcccle it shows the other 2 adapters as disabled. I tried with monitors attached and dummy plugs both but the situation doesn't change. Any idea whats causing this? also right clicking and making the adapter enabled in amdcccle and saving changes causes the X config to only have the adapter section and no screen section. after reboot the situation stays the same.

  • Public versus private inheritance when some of the parent's methods need to be exposed?

    - by Vorac
Public inheritance means that all fields from the base class retain their declared visibility, while private means that they are forced to 'private' within the derived class's scope. What should be done if some of the parent's members (say, methods) need to be publicly exposed? I can think of two solution. Public inheritance somewhat breaks encapsulation. Furthermore, when you need to find out where is the method foo() defined, one needs to look at a chain of base classes. Private inheritance solves these problems, but introduces burden to write wrappers (more text). Which might be a good thing in the line of verbosity, but makes changes of interfaces incredibly cumbersome. What considerations am I missing? What constraints on the type of project are important? How to choose between the two (I am not even mentioning 'protected')? Note that I am targeting non-virtual methods. There isn't such a discussion for virtual methods (or is there).

  • Microsoft Office 2013 Takes New Approach

You can check out an article from Computerworld for a good look at the questions and answers about the new software. For instance, you've probably noticed that I'm not giving the full name. That's because Microsoft seems to be using several names. If you go the traditional route and pay the one-time upfront fee for the shrink-wrapped edition, it's Office 2013. There's also a tablet version called Office Home and Student 2013 RT - but that won't include the iPad, or at least not at first. The consumer preview, which I'll be linking to in a minute, is dubbed Office 365 Home Premium. There ...

  • Free E-Book - Testing for Continuous Delivery with Visual Studio 2012

    - by TATWORTH
Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/TATWORTH/archive/2013/11/05/free-e-book---testing-for-continuous-delivery-with-visual-studio.aspx At http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj159345.aspx, Microsoft Press are offering the free e-Book, Testing for Continuous Delivery with Visual Studio 2012. "As more software projects adopt a continuous delivery cycle, testing threatens to be the bottleneck in the process. Agile development frequently revisits each part of the source code, but every change requires a re-test of the product. While the skills of the manual tester are vital, purely manual testing can't keep up. Visual Studio 2012 provides many features that remove roadblocks in the testing and debugging process and also help speed up and automate re-testing. " (Please ignore the click to look inside!)

  • fglrx installation without success - gl_conf issue

    - by Lucio
I followed the steps of this guide. I've installed the drivers without any problems with sudo dpkg -i fglrx*.deb. The next step is Generate a new /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, but I can't do this due to the following reason: When I enter sudo aticonfig --initial -f the terminal show me this output: sudo: aticonfig: command not found This problem is caused by an error with the symbolics links into the fglrx directory. Look at this section, where you can see -how to fix it- but it doesn't work for me. Why it doesn't? Because after I enter sudo update-alternatives --auto gl_conf the terminal show me this: update-alternatives: error: no alternatives for gl_conf. What I have to do to fix this problem? • Introducing Task-It. A real-world application using RadControls for Silverlight 4

This is the first in a series of blog posts based around an application called Task-It that I have developed in Silverlight 4. Task-It is real-world application designed for people that need a simple way to manage the numerous tasks that we all strive to accomplish on a daily basis. Figure 1: Task-It Tasks page Figure 2: Task-It Dashboard page I have developed this application for several reasons: There are many task management applications out there, and I have used quite a few of them, but I havent found one that really grabbed me. Many of these applications had their strong points, but some were overly complex, some lacked key features, some cost too much money, and so forth. I thought it would be nice to identify the best parts of each, and take my stab at building my own. During my evaluation of task management applications, I have not yet ...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • assistance recovering/reinstalling/installing ubuntu and win7

    - by razzrat
New computer with Windows 7 installed, I defrag, shrink, re-boot from Ubuntu LiveUSB, go to gparted and look at partitions before installing Ubuntu....for some reason Win7 is still taking up 400G of my HD! I resized partition down with gparted, exit and yes of course I can't boot into Windows. When I go to install Ubuntu in new large unallocated space I get a blank screen at the point you are asked what kind of installation you want. I have Ubuntu 12.04 LiveUSB, Windows 7 re-installation disk and driver disks also. The HDD currently has 3 allocated partitions: 'diag' fat16, 'recovery' ntfs and 'OS' ntfs which has a red '!' next to it.

  • How to make Ubuntu LiveCD be able to use USB Flash drive and external hard drive?

    - by ????
I am booting up Ubuntu 2012.04 LiveCD... and was able to do /sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt and be able to see files in /mnt, which is the main hard drive that can't boot up any more. So to copy files from /mnt to an external hard drive or USB flash drive, I connected a 1TB external hard drive and 2 USB flash drives to the computer, but for some reason, in "File Systems", I can't drag and drop files from /mnt into those external hard drive or USB flash drives? I can't open or look into those drives either... How to make it work?

  • From the Classroom to the Boardroom

    - by Maria Sandu
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Pens and Paper...these are the only things being a student and being a graduate / professional have in common. Walking in to the offices of Oracle South Africa as a graduate the first thing you notice is how polished and sleek all the people who work here look. 80% of the ladies wear sky-scraper heels and walk with the greatest grace. This was the first of many rude awakenings to remind me that I am no longer a student but a graduate. My first struggle was having to wake up at wee hours of the morning to prepare for work. As a student going to class was almost an optional thing, if you missed a morning class you could always attend an evening class to make up for it or simply attend with another group. But in the workplace, you HAVE to show up every single morning at the same time, with no option of coming in when it suits you and there is definitely no coming in with the evening class/shift. As a student, the earliest hour I ever woke up was 7:00am, anything earlier than that was considered inhumane torture. My reason for waking up every morning as a student was “you have a degree to go get” but as a graduate having to go to work I have to say to myself “here’s to a new day of learning and growing”. My second struggle has come in having to change my beloved wardrobe. Everyone who knows me knows how passionate I am about fashion and shopping. For me Shopping is a BASIC HUMAN RIGHT, that should not be messed with. Therefore it was with great sadness that I swopped my rippled skinny jeans for pin-striped formal pants, my long chandelier earrings for simple studs, my flat shoes for heels, my sheer blouses for crisp white shirts, even my beloved wild hair had to make way for a simple ponytail. Our looks as ladies also came under great scrutiny, we had to acquaint ourselves with some serious grooming tools: the mascara, blush, lip-gloss, blush, a touch of lipstick and a manicure set. Language was a struggle of its own as well. Being a student you learn to relate to your peers in a informal way. In the workplace you have to address everyone with the same respect, including your peers. Words like “Hey buddy” had to make way for “good morning friend”. The month long winter school holiday was one of the things I looked forward to as a student. This was a time where we got to be at home and avoid the coldest month of the year, July. It was the most amazing thing ever, just sleeping and snuggling up to all sorts of warm things but sadly it is now a thing of the past. It is currently winter in South Africa and going to work has become the most unfashionable thing with all the jackets, boots, scarves and gloves. But summer is coming and I will miss those holidays too. As a student the school holidays were like a gift for us to catch a break and not think for a while which was why it was imaginable how someone would go on for the entire year without a break, with only the promise of a mere 21 days annual leave!! Right now I am sure we are all looking forward to taking that annual leave when the time is right. The worst rude awakening I must say, has to be presenting in front of clients and managers. As a student you have the same class mates for almost four years therefore presenting in front of them becomes the norm over the years and your lecturer will always go gently on you. What they don’t tell you at University is that in the real world, time is money and clients pay money to see you present therefore there is no room for error. Clients are not there to give you a score and boost your ego, they expect nothing less than 100% and they will let you know without a second thought. For a graduate this can feel like you are being fed to the sharks, you either get eaten or you swim for your life. At the end of the day, it is all an experience that is meant to groom us into better professional and make us a part of the Red Team. All the sacrifices are worth it and they lead us to being better and more polished professionals. • How do I render terrain in a 2.5D perspective, like in the game Don't Starve?

    - by Hamdan
I have experience in making 2D side scroller games such as Terraria, but now I want to challenge myself and make a game that has a 2.5D perspective. The game I am trying to mimic is Don't Starve. Right now my focus is on figuring out how to render the ground. I am having a hard time figuring out how they generated the ground, and then rendered it. The way I think they rendered the ground is by first painting the ground in some paint program, and then somehow manipulating that flat image so that it appears to have depth. I am completely confused by how you would actually render that type of terrain. I want the terrain to have the following features: Look like the terrain in Don't Starve, here is a video showing the terrain in Don't Starve The terrain will be flat, and the camera's angle and perspective will be fixed Any tips and hints will be appreciated, Thank you in advance. (I am working in Java, using the Light Weight Java Game Library (LWJGL).)

  • BPM Parallel Multi Instance sub processes by Niall Commiskey

Here is a very simple scenario: An order with lines is processed. The OrderProcess accepts in an order with its attendant lines. The Fulfillment process is called for each order line. We do not have many order lines, and the processing is simple, so we run this in parallel. Let's look at the definition of the Multi Instance sub-process - Read the full article here. • ASP.NET Tooltips Extender Control

Tooltips is always a good usability practice to display descripitve and meaningful message on UI, which provide guidance and extra information to users visually. However, I cannot find this kind of handy "control" in the latest version (40412) of the AJAX control toolkit. (Feature request?) • Create Adventure Game Scene/Room/Backdrop from Real Photo

    - by Lyuben
Is there a suitable software or a good tutorial for creating 2D rooms/scenery for adventure games from real photos? Is it possible to achieve good results by using photos, or the hand-drawn style will always be the best choice? Thank you! --- EDIT --- I want to clarify that I'm particularly interested in the art creation process, not on the environment in which to build games. I'm writing the game in Java for Android, but I don't think it matters. Also, I'm not trying to decide if the game will have photo realistic rooms or not - I want to achieve 2d pixelated, old-school style background scenes and I wonder if this can be made from photos, because I cannot draw them myself. For example, can I shoot a scene with my camera and then make it look something like the image in the following link: PIXEL ART FOREST I know that I cannot get the same quality as an absolutely hand-drawn pixel, but I'm looking for some decent technology/tutorial/software to make them somewhat similar.

  • Visual Studio 2010 JavaScript Intellisense Behavior

After I installed Visual Studio 2010 I was having a difficult time editing .js files in Visual Studio. I habitually type the "(" character as soon as the function I want to call is highlighted in the Intellisense window, but in 2010 this behavior was no longer auto-completing the function name. At first I thought this behavior was due to the new "suggestion mode" in Intellisense, but no amount of toggling with CTRL+ALT+SPACE would bring back the auto-complete behavior. It turns out the two...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. • Is there a correlation between complexity and reachability?

    - by Saladin Akara
I've been studying cyclomatic complexity (McCabe) and reachability of software at uni recently. Today my lecturer said that there's no correlation between the two metrics, but is this really the case? I'd think there would definitely be some correlation, as less complex programs (from the scant few we've looked at) seem to have 'better' results in terms of reachability. Does anyone know of any attempt to look at the two metrics together, and if not, what would be a good place to find data on both complexity and reachability for a large(ish) number of programs? (As clarification, this isn't a homework question. Also, if I've put this in the wrong place, let me know.)

  • Backup and the evil RETAINDAYS option

    - by TiborKaraszi
"So what bad has this option done?", you probably as yourself. Well, not much, but I find it evil because it confuses people, especially those new to SQL Server. I have many times seen people specifying something like 3, and expect SQL Server to keep the three most recent backups in the backup file and overwrite everything which is older than that. Well, that is not what the option does. But before we go into details, let's look at an example backup command which is using this option: BACKUP DATABASE...(read more)

  • Grub2 with BURG: duplicate Windows entries, how do I remove one?

    - by Tomas Lycken
I have a dual boot system with Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7, using GRUB2 (with Burg) as boot loader. For some reason, the Windows installation shows up twice in the boot menu: Ubuntu GNU/Linux, with Linux 3.2.0-24-generic Ubuntu GNU/Linux, with Linux 3.2.0-24-generic (recovery mode) Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda1) Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda2) If I look in my partition table, /dev/sda2 is C:\ of the Windows installation, and /dev/sda1 is the "System Reserved" partition (which, IIRC, is Windows' own bootloader). Furthermore, gparted shows /dev/sda2 - but no other partitions - with a boot flag: What is going on here? I'd like to have only the entries for Ubuntu and one entry for Windows in my boot menu - how do I remove one of them?

  • T9 patented while QWERTY is not?

    - by Marco W.
I've seen that there are lots of custom keyboards for Android, but all are QWERTY keyboards. I couldn't find any keyboard with T9 layout. Is this because T9 is patented and the QWERTY layout is not? So if I made a T9 keyboard, I would have to pay patent fees? So what does the patent protect when you look at T9? Only the layout? Or the prediction engine? The problem is, this way of predicting words is the only one that makes sense for this layout ...
