• How to solve the "Bootmgr is missing" problem on Windows 7 machine ?

  Hi, I bought a Dell Laptop recently which has Windows 7 operating system in it. I did not get the operating system CD/DVD. Recently I got a problem while starting the machine. I really don't know what happened. It says "Bootmgr is missing. Press Alt+Ctrl+Delete to restart". I have Dell recovery CD. But I don't know how to resolve this issue. Can anyone help me ?

• Outlook 2010 keeps asking me to Choose Profile

  This question has been asked and the answer given seemed to work for others who asked it, but it doesn't work for me. Here's what happened: the other day my power blinked twice within seconds and it caused my computer to reboot. Ever since then, I get a prompt from Outlook 2010 asking me to choose a profile, either when I load the program or when the program is not even running. The only option is "Outlook", and even when I check "set as default" it keeps asking me. I went to Windows (Vista) Control Panel, and searched for "mail" as someone suggested. The only search result that seemed relevant was "Change default programs that Windows uses". From there, I choose Custom/Choose a default email program/Outlook. There is nothing regarding "profiles" as the forum answer suggests, and it doesn't solve the problem. Also, I did all of this while Outlook was not running. Can someone help?

• Installing multiple versions of a shared library

  I am running ubuntu 10.04 and I want to use tmux 1.6. tmux has a dependency on libevent 2. My solution was to compile libevent2 and drop into /usr/local/lib then compile tmux against this lib and drop into /usr/local/bin. This works great until...I restart. This is just an assumption on my part but it seems that other binaries are now linking to the libevent2 library presumably because its on the library path. Because there are 60+ packages with libevent1 dependencies this causes my install to basically lose its mind. Is there an idiomatic way to approach running an application that has a core library dependency on a different version? Should I just statically link the lib?

• RUNIT - created first service directory, "sv start testrun" does not work

  I'm pretty new to runit. I installed it on a Ubuntu host. What I did: 1) created a dir testrun in /etc/sv 2) created a script run in /etc/sv/testrun/run, the script content: #! /bin/bash exec /root/FP/annotate-output python /root/FP/test.py | logger -t svtest 3) If I call directly /etc/sv/testrun/run it executes successfully 4) I run sv start testrun (or sv run testrun, sv restart testrun), all of them end up with the same error msg: fail: sv: unable to change to service directory: file does not exist Any ideas what am I doing wrong? I'm new to runit and base all my actions on the information found here: http://smarden.org/runit/

• Can I prevent a particular program from showing up in the taskbar on Windows XP?

  I have a program that I need to run more or less continuously, but which I won't need to access very frequently. Currently, launching the program creates a window and causes the program to appear on the taskbar. I'm fine with the program window appearing, but I'd just as soon the taskbar be reserved for programs that I need to switch between frequently—it would be superior for this program to only appear as an icon in the notification area, if at all. Is this possible? How do I do this?

  I have a Swedish Windows 7 Home Premium on my PC, and I really want to change system language to English. I know that Home Premium can't change system language (only W7 Ultimate does that), so I consider buying an English version and make a clean install. However I do have many settings, programs etc that I don't want to lose. I therefore have two questions: Can I take a backup of my Swedish W7 Home Premium, install the English W7 Home Premium and then restore everything back to normal, except the system language is now English? Can I take a backup of my Swedish W7 Home Premium, install W7 Ultimate and then restore everything back to normal (now with the option to change system language)? Thanks!

• Dump vim screen into a file

  I need to dump whatever is seen on the vim screen as it is, with colors and everything. Is there a way do to id. I am hoping that ncurses uses the same escape sequence for colors as bash. So when I'll do cat on the file that I've dumped the screen to, I should get the same output as the vim file. I want to use it in the scenario when I am doing a side by side colorful diff of files and need to print them. If anyone knows of any other side-by-side colorful diff programs, please feel free to mention in the comments (not answers because I am hoping that this question will be answered so that it can be used by others).

• Wired and Wireless Network Duplication

  Howdy! Running into an issue when some of our client's have their laptop's connected via the wired ethernet network aswell as on the WLAN of the same network. There is know issues caused to the end clients.. BUT! Being a Managed Services Engineer i get pretty over the alerts that come through on our reports for machine's with the same hostname on the same network! We are not going to remove this monitoring because it does help a lot with detecting and stopping inferior users and things like that. So basically.. Question is, is there a way in Windows (third party programs welcome) to disable the wireless network when a wired network is connected and operational.. I know that Windows automticaly 'prefers' the wired network, however they are still both connected and therfore there is duplicate hostnames on the same network. Could also have stupid issues with DNS and things like that! Thanks!

• How do I stop Mac OS X Snow Leopard from losing the keyboard shortcuts I create in System Preferences?

  I can't explain it. In OS X 10.6.6 (but also in previous versions; nothing to do w/ latest update), I create some keyboard shortcuts both for individual applications and for "all applications." I use them for a while. Later, sometimes after restart sometimes not, they're gone. Where'd they go?!?! (More importantly, how do I make them stop disappearing? • I suspect that my HDD is causing hardlocks, as all other components have been replaced. How can I check this theory and solve the potential cause?

  I have had this problem over quite a while now, thorough multiple Linux kernel versions and distributions, as well as replacement of all components, aside from my main HDD - RAM, GPU(twice), mother board, CPU, power supply. What happens is, at one point during the operation of the PC, it will hardlock - everything stops working, external HDD is not shut down correctly and continues to spin until I plug it out and in, there are no system/kernel logs of any kind, and no otherwise nothing that would suggest a cause. Another reason for my suspicion is that the failures happen almost exclusively during HDD read/write activity - shutdown(happens nearly 1/3 of the time so far, it's only been few days though), launching programs, and once during operation of apt. I hope the post is descriptive enough, if you need any additional info, ask(and tell me how to prepare/obtain it), and I will provide. If I'm wrong, point me in the right direction. • random hard disk errors

  For the past 2 years or so (4 year old custom build) I've been getting random moments where everything stops responding (or takes a very long time to respond) followed by I/O and hdd not detected errors on restart. To fix it, all I usually need to do is unplug my SATA cables from the hdd and mobo and plug them back in again and the problem disappears, at least for a little while (it ranges anywhere from a day to a few months time). Sometimes even a startup repair does the job. I've done multiple reformats and have also ran chkdsk more times than I can remember and both do not seem to help in the long run. Both the drives seem to be exhibiting the same problem. Have both my hdds been "dying" for the past couple of years, even though they are fully functional besides these occasional hiccups? Does the issue lie elsewhere? All feedback is appreciated. System specs: Biostar Tpower i45 mobo 2x WD Caviar 640GB hdds Zalman 750w psu Radeon 5870 gpu 2x2gb Gskill DDR2 ram Win7 64

  On Linux the ssh command has a -t option whose man page reads: Force pseudo-tty allocation. This can be used to execute arbitrary screen-based programs on a remote machine, which can be very useful, e.g. when implementing menu services. Multiple -t options force tty allocate, even if ssh has no local tty. I would like to use this same option with PuTTY on Windows. • Debian Based Server not booting, soon after GRUB screen it restarts?

  I have tried running memtest, it start get about half way then abruptly restarts. I assume this is not a problem with the OS itself but rather a hardware issue, I have checked various logs when after about 10 reboots it starts ok, /var/log/kern.log /var/log/syslog /var/log/dmesg All I get is: EXT4-fs(sdc1): re-mounted. Opts: errors=remount-ro restart So I ran fcsk on the drive, to check if the fs was failing and it was fine. Really don't know how to find why the server is continuosly restarting andif I get lucky it will boot up.

• Disappearing mouse cursor in Word, Notepad, Outlook

  I purchased a lenovo led monitor as a second monitor so I have dual screens now. Everything works great except all text programs make my cursor disappear on the new monitor. Everything works great on the old monitor but if I drag a text document to the new screen the cursor is invisible. Any ideas on what to try? Odd to me that it works on one and not the other so assuming it has something to do with the monitor but none of the settings seem to make a difference.

• Problem with the hosts file in Windows XP

  I have a computer with Windows XP SP2 with a weird problem. The hosts file doesn't work. No matter what I do, adding or removing entries in the file doesn't make any difference, pinging the added names times out. I tried flushing the DNS cache (using ipconfig /flushdns) but that didn't work, I even tried to restart the DNS client service but that made no difference too. Removing entries also has no effect, I ping the names and I get a reply. Help!!! Edit: Thanks for your answer guys, but the problem is more complicated than this. It seems I'll have to reinstall Windows.

• Simplest way to respawn configured number of instances of a specific process.

  The production server runs a PHP application on IIS 6.0. During the peak hours we have had a few issues where the php-cgi.exe processes increase in numbers and approach around 200. The server comes to a crawl and we have to restart the server a multiple times to restore the normal behavior. When the server is running normally, I have noticed that there are only 10-15 php-cgi.exe processes in the task manager. What could be causing the php-cgi.exe processes to increase in number from 10-15 to around 200 during the peak hours? Where should I look for a cause?

  So, my kid's computer has Windows XP, with no disks. I'm pretty sure it has some viruses on the computer, of the type that don't seem to come out despite trying multiple anti-viral programs on it. I'm ready to just format it and start over again. I have a license sticker on the box, but no media to install it. I strongly suspect the license is OEM, but I don't have any proof.   Using FreeBSD 9, and created a ZFS file system like so zfs create tank/project1 zfs set sharenfs=on tank/project1 There are many howto's on setting up NFSv3 on FreeBSD on the net, but I can't find any one NFSv4 and when the NFS share is done with ZFS. E.g. this howto say I have to restart the (NFSv3) by nfsd -u -t -n 4, but I don't even have nfsd. • OS won't boot during vs2010 install on vista 64

  I am installing vs2010 on a vista 64bit machine. During the install it asked for a restart. Since that, vista won't load. I tried restore to previous good config - didn't help. I am only able to boot it using safe mode with networking. When I did that, it continued the vista part of the install (the screen with the 3 out of 3 updates) but after that when I restarted again - still fails. HELP!!!

• Vista Startup - Cannot Find the File Specified

  Yesterday I restarted my laptop because my Wi-Fi catcher wasn't working correctly, and when the computer reached the login screen, instead of showing my user account it said "Cannot find the file specified". I rebooted and ran the Startup Repair and Memory Diagnostics but nothing showed up. I also took the battery out for a minute and tried again but still no luck. The weird thing is that I cannot even boot into safe mode, it still shows the same error. I don't remember downloading or opening anything suspicious recently, and I have 3 different cleaners/anti-malware programs as well that I usually run about once a week. I did go into the registry recently but I didn't modify or delete anything as I was only checking to see if I had a certain key in it. I have a Dell laptop running Vista Home Basic SP2. If I have to I can reinstall the OS with the CD or even take it to Best Buy but I'd rather try and fix it first. Thanks.

• Prevent acccess to the C drive

  Is it possible to prevent regular users from accessing the C drive via Windows Explorer? they should be allowed to execute certain programs. This is to ensure that employees cannot steal or copy out proprietary software even though they should be able to execute it. One way would be to change the option in windows Group Policy and set the "shell" to something other than "explorer.exe". I'm looking for a similar windows setting that just hides the C drive or otherwise prevents trivial access. This is for Windows XP/7.
