    I've been using MyISAM exclusively for several years now and know the ins-and-outs pretty well of how to optimize it, but I've just recently started using InnoDB for some of my tables and don't know that much about it. What are some general tips to help improve the performance of these InnoDB tables (they were converted from MyISAM and have anywhere from 100k - 2M rows and most won't use transactions).

  • Is there a MySQL performance benchmark to measure the impact of utf8_unicode_ci versus utf8_general_ci?

    I read here and there that using the utf8_unicode_ci collation ensures a better treatment of unicode text (for example, it knowns how to expand characters such as 'œ' into 'oe' for searching and ordering) compared to the default utf8_general_ci which basically just strips diacritics. Unfortunately, both sources indicate that utf8_unicode_ci is slightly slower than utf8_general_ci. So my question is: what does "slightly slower" mean? Has anyone run benchmarks? Are we talking about a -0.01% performance impact or rather something like -25%? Thanks for your help.

    Currently running on a 16GB system - Ubuntu 64 bit. INnodb Buffer Pool is set to 10GB. tuning-primer shows the following: QUERY CACHE Query cache is enabled Current query_cache_size = 512 M Current query_cache_used = 501 M Current query_cache_limit = 4 M Current Query cache Memory fill ratio = 97.87 % Current query_cache_min_res_unit = 4 K However, 9418108 queries have been removed from the query cache due to lack of memory Perhaps you should raise query_cache_size That is over 9million queries removed. System uptime is 8 days. Should I remove the Query Cache altogether? Our db is always under heavy I/O. tia

  • How do I split a large MySql backup file into multiple files?

    I have a 250 MB backup SQL file but the limit on the new hosting is only 100 MB ... Is there a program that let's you split an SQL file into multiple SQL files? It seems like people are answering the wrong question ... so I will clarify more: I ONLY have the 250 MB file and only have the new hosting using phpMyAdmin which currently has no data in the database. I need to take the 250 MB file and upload it to the new host but there is a 100 MB SQL backup file upload size limit. I simply need to take one file that is too large and split it out into multiple files each containing only full valid SQL statements (no statements can be split between two files).

  • How Export Result of MySQL Query on PHPMyAdmin 3.4.3?

    1) I've got a 30K row table. 2) When I run a long, 50-line query on that table, a GROUP function reduces the number of rows to 7K. 3) I want to export the grouped 7K rows as a new table, or save them as a CSV. When I attempt to export, instead of getting the grouped 7K rows, I get the old, pre-query 30K rows. What am I doing wrong, and what should I be doing? NOTE: I'm not a coder, so I'd really appreciate a solution that just used the PHPMyAdmin GUI. Thanks!

The question is as follows: Question: Are the statistics sampled by default? Answer: Yes. The sampling rate can be specified by the user and it can be anywhere between a very low value to 100%. Let us do a small experiment to verify if the auto update on statistics is left on. Also, let’s examine a very large table that is created and statistics by default- whether the statistics are sampled or not. In this case, the sample rate is 100%. Before dropping the table, let us also check the size of the table. The size of the table is less than 4 MB. Test 1: Total Rows: 1000000, Rows Sampled: 255420, Size of the Table: 35.516 MB Test 2: Total Rows: 100000, Rows Sampled: 100000, Size of the Table: 3.555 MB The reason behind the sample in the Test1 is that the data space is larger than 8 MB, and therefore it uses more than 1024 data pages. If the data space is smaller than 8 MB and uses less than 1024 data pages, then the sampling does not happen. Sampling aids in reducing excessive data scan; however, sometimes it reduces the accuracy of the data as well. Please note that this is just a sample test and there is no way it can be claimed as a benchmark test. The result can be dissimilar on different machines.   • It's like I'm in recovery mode after update, but I'm not

    I used the Ubuntu software updater and updated to the most recent packages. After the last update today, it's like I have gone into recovery mode, but I haven't. I am running UbuntuGNOME First, everything looks like this: Switching to dark mode does nothing. Also, default applications do not work. Such as Startup and the default screenshot application. Everything was working fine before the latest software update. System Info Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Gnome-Shell 3.10.4 Kernel 3.13.0-29 I can't figure out how to get an update history, but this is almost a fresh install. It's about a week old install and this is the 3rd time I've used the Ubuntu Software Update. I am running AMD ATI HD6700 with the proprietary Catalyst drivers. I tried to provide all information that I thought would be useful, if you need any more please let me know.   • Big Data – ClustrixDB – Extreme Scale SQL Database with Real-time Analytics, Releases Software Download – NewSQL

While I was going through the documentation I realized that ClustrixDB also has extensive support for SQL features including complex queries involving joins on a dozen or more tables, aggregates, sorts, sub-queries. NoMoreRack – Top 2 fastest growing e-commerce company in US used ClustrixDB for high availability and fast growth through Amazon cloud. MakeMyTrip – India’s leading travel site runs on ClustrixDB with two clusters running as multi-master in Chennai and Bangalore. Many enterprises such as AOL, CSC, Rakuten, Symantec use ClustrixDB when their applications need scale. I must accept that I am impressed with the information I have learned so far and now is the time to do some hand’s on experience with their product.   • Errors when installing Open Office

    I followed the first set of instructions on this page to install Open Office: How to install Open Office? However, the last step which says to change the CHMOD of a folder, I got an error saying that the directory does not exist. Open Office now appears in my Ubuntu start menu, but clicking on it does nothing. I tried a reboot. Below is what I could copy from my terminal. I am running the latest Ubuntu. I have not uninstalled Libreoffice as suggested somewhere. The reason is that in the Ubuntu software centre, Libre office appears to be made up of several components and I don't know which ones to remove (or all maybe?). They are Libreoffice Draw, Math, Writer, Calc. After this operation, 480 MB of additional disk space will be used.   • Install updates without breaking shell theme?

    Recently I installed a copy of Oneiric Ocelot 11.10 on my ThinkPad. Everything went fine, I installed the gnome shell and gnome-tweak-tool to customize everything. I changed the shell theme, the GTK+ theme and the icon set. After everything fit my needs perfectly, I installed some updates from the update manager (no upgrades, just small updates). I had to restart, and after I restarted, my gnome shell was broken. In tweak-tool, it showed the customized shell as the default one, and my gtk theme was broken as well (it looked like two themes "frankensteined" together...). The bad thing was - I couldn't get things back into the default settings! So the only thing left was to use the -non broken- unity shell. What can I do to stop these things from happening? (I mean...sure I could avoid the updates, but that would be kind of stupid, too.) I only have these PPAs installed: ferramroberto-gnome3-oneiric.list (and .save), playonlinux.list (and .save) And how can I fix the broken gnome-shell?

    Hi all Is there a Python equivalent of PHP's mysql_real_escape_string? I'm trying to insert some strings into a MySQL db direct from Python, and keep getting tripped up by quotes in the strings. mysql_string = "INSERT INTO candidate (name, address) VALUES " for k, v in v_dict.iteritems(): mysql_string += " ('" + v_dict['name'] + "', '" + v_dict['address'] + "'), " mysql_string += ";" cursor.execute(mysql_string) I've tried re.escape() but that escapes every non-alphanumeric character in the strings, which isn't what I need - I just need to escape single quotes in this instance (plus more generally anything else that might trip up MySQL). Could do this manually I guess, but is there a smarter way to do it in Python?

    Hi, I'm looking to create an audit trail for my PHP web app's database (eg. capture inserts, updates, deletes). MySQL triggers seem to be just the thing -- but how do I capture the IP address and the web username (as opposed to the mysql username, localhost) of the user who invoked the trigger?
