• How to remove a partition on a USB drive?

  I got a free promotional USB stick that I want to format for my own purposes. When I inserted it, it automatically opened a browser and launched a web site. I have since disabled autoplay on this computer so that nothing launches when the stick is inserted. But it still shows up as two separate drives, and one of them is a "CD Drive" that I can't format. How can a USB stick contain a "CD Drive?" And more to the point, how can I remove this partition using Windows XP or Ubuntu? Update I previously asked for an XP solution, but finding none, I have tried Ubuntu, also without success. Gparted doesn't see the "CD" portion as a device at all, and from bash, any chmod changes I try tell me that the file system is read-only. Any ideas?

• Display stretches 4:3 ratios; Adds scrolling to other ratios

  I have a dual monitor setup. Normally, they both display at 1680x1050. They have been setup this way for about a year. I'm using Windows XP Professional 2003 x64 SP2. Today, out of nowhere, one of the monitors kicked back to a lower resolution. I was not playing with any configuration at the time.. in fact all I had done was close a window (maybe a browser). But the thing is that the resolution is still preserved partially by the fact that the screen will scroll when you move the mouse. So it's like looking through a 1024x768 window into a 1680x1050 world. The monitor itself does not appear to be damaged, because I also have it connected to my netbook (via KVM) and higher resolutions work fine. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers to no avail. System restore doesn't help either. I'm unsure of the exact ATI card I'm using.. Device Manager lists it as "Radeon X300/X550/X1050". There is no Catalyst Control Center software installed. I tried to install it, but there doesn't seem to be a way to install it by itself ... it forces you to install another driver, which breaks both of my displays, forcing me to go into safe mode and run system restore again. Any ideas? Thanks EDIT: After playing around more, I discovered that the "scrolling" behavior is only present for aspect ratios that are not 4:3. For 4:3 ratios, it just stretches out to fit the wide screen. My monitor's native ratio is 16:9 .. what could be causing it to think it needs to scroll?

• Windows 7 won't boot from raid-1 disks until secondary non-bootable disks are removed

  I have an ASUS X58 motherboard with a Intel ICH10R southbridge raid controller. Bootable raid-1 SATA disks are on channels 4, 5. Secondary raid-1 SATA disks are on channels 0,1. Everything was working OK until one time I removed the secondary disks and booted successfully but after I shut down and reinstalled the secondary disks rebooting fails with a "Please insert proper boot item" error. If I remove the secondary disks and reboot then do a hot-install of the disks after booting completes, then all is OK. Do I have a raid setup problem or is it something I can fix with Disk Manager.

  I am trying to get Synergy up and running from a new Windows 7 computer, to an XP computer. The Synergy installations seemed to go fine. I configured each to start on start-up, which they seem to, but the client won't connect. I get repeated: "server refused client with our name" messages in the log output. The Synergy FAQ says to "Add the client to the server's configuration file." But I can't seem to find an instruction set on how to do this. I've looked and looked, but I'm lost...

  I currently used this code for Imagemagick: convert "c:\users\****\My Documents\test.png" -transparent white test2.png However, I keep on getting two errors that look like this: convert.exe: unable to open image `c:\users\****\My': No such file or directory @ error/blob.c/OpenBlob/2641. convert.exe: no decode delegate for this image format `c:\users\****\My' @ error/constitute.c/ReadImage/550. I installed Imagemagick to my c:\ directory. What does this mean, and how can I fix it?

  Lets say I opened file1.txt, file2.txt, file3a.txt and file3b.txt such that the tabline (the thing on the top) looks like this: file1.txt file2.txt 2 file3a.txt (Note how file3b.txt. is missing because it is shown in a split, in the same tab as file3a.txt) To move more quickly between tabs (with <Number>gt), I would like each tab to display its index, along the filename. Like so: 1:<file1.txt> 2:<file2.txt> 3:<2 file3a.txt> The formatting (the angle braces in particular) are optional; I just want the index to appear there (the 1:, 2: and so on). No clues on :h tab-page-commands or google whatsoever.

  I have workbook with 2 sheets (Sheet1 and sheet2). On sheet1 user will enter the data which will be populated in the column B and then column C will hold the values from Col A and B on sheet2. I need to create a text file from the values in coloumn C on a click of a button and then upload(FTP) that file to a server. So the sheet1 will have 2 buttons. Button1 will save the excel file and create the text file in windows temp directory. e.g text.xls text.prop (text file whoch has all the values in column C on sheet2) Button2 will upload (FTP) the text file (.prop) to a server.   My new ADSL line is now enabled, I can finally use my Netgear DM111Pv2 to use to the Internet. My ISP has told me a big surprise : I don't need to use a login and a password to connect to the Internet, then I must use the RFC 2684 bridging mode. It works pretty fine on the ADSL modem's side, but I've spent one night trying to figure out how to connect to the Internet through this modem. I only have a Fonera 2.0n and a computer running Gentoo Linux. So, I'm asking you if there's something huge I've been missing since the beginning ! Maybe I should wait to buy a new router fully supporting the RFC2684 bridging mode, but I'm more interested in setting up this mode on my Fonera 2.0n and even my Raspberry Pi !

• Do different operating systems have different read and write speeds?

  If I have two different operating systems, such as Windows 8 and Ubuntu, running on the same hardware, will the two operating systems have different read and write speeds? My guess is that there would be minimal difference between operating systems and read and write speeds to the hard disk since the major limited factor is seeking; however, different operating systems may use different file systems in order to attempt to reduce seek time in the hard disk. Likewise, I'm sure that modern operating systems will not actually write directly to the hard disk, and instead will just have it in memory and marked with a dirty bit. Are there any studies that show differences in read and write speeds between OSs? Or would the file system being used by the OS matter more than the OS itself?

• Is there a way to allow continuous scrolling in Adobe Reader?

  I am having to read through a MASSIVE (1000+ page) PDF specification in Adobe Reader X (version 10). It has always bugged me that if you scroll to the edge of a page, the Reader automatically jumps to the top of the next page. Is there away to cut this off so that when I reach the bottom of one page, the edge of the page meets the top of the next page and I can see a half-page of both the last and next page? I know that MS Word can and does behave this way. Can I change a setting to scroll the document in this manner in Adobe Reader?

• How to unlock files using handle.exe and process name?

  I tried Unlocker 1.9.1 but it doesn't work correctly for me on Windows7 (worked ok on Windows XP) and also I tried LockHunter 2.0.2.103 x64 and reported a bug but .... LockHunter actually unlocks the file from GUI but not from command line. So I want to use handle.exe by SysInternals to unlock one file "TestPro.log". I know the absolut path if it helps. I can list and all processes that locked the file by executing C:\Windows\system32>c:\edutester\progs\handle testpro.log java.exe pid: 2120 type: File 338: C:\Users\Public\TestPro \TestPro Automation Framework\Logs\TestPro.log java.exe pid: 1004 type: File 934: C:\Users\Public\TestPro \TestPro Automation Framework\Logs\TestPro.log What I need to know how to unlock the file using above info from command line automatically.   Is there any way I could sum up the lowest 100 values within a range? I know that min() would give you the lowest value but i need something to return the 100 lowest values. I just used 100 hypothetically to make it easier to understand what I'm trying to achieve. • Ubuntu Remix on Acer Aspire One Netbook keeps freezing

  It came with a Windows XP installation and I just couldn't deal with the screen constantly blacking out. Later on I found out they designed a specific key on this netbook for it. Anyways I installed Ubuntu Remix and it fixed it. However a lot of bad things are happening now. 1) If I want a long video or lots of music it will lockup after an hour. 2) Plugging it to an external monitor for more then 1 hour will black out. 3) Constantly running fsck after a lockup and then I lose nodes / fragments and what not :( I am really not sure what to do, both blacking out and lockups really mess my hard drive up. I have to manually run fsck every time it happens. My gf has the same kind of netboot w/ Remix (not the same model number) and it runs perfectly fine on hers. Except for skype eating up all her CPU.

• IDE <-> SATA Adapter Issue - Hard Drive Not recognized

  I was trying to use one of these IDE to SATA adapters (Syba SD-ADA50016 IDE/SATA Converter Bi-directional IDE to SATA) and I connected a working hard drive (Seagate Barracuda 500 GB SATA 3.5 Inch 7200 RPM Version 12 Desktop Internal Hard Drive ST3500418AS). I could get the drive to be recognized by the BIOS, but I couldn't boot a Linux disc or install to the drive. I tried to install pfSense to this drive and the install failed because the setup couldn't recognize the file. Has anyone heard of these adapters giving trouble and/or not working properly? I would like to be able to use this device for newer drives on older boards.

• SMS reminder for Windows Mobile?

  A lot of mobile phones can be setup to emit a reminder beep every few minutes if you have an unread SMS. So when you miss the receive signal of the sms (because you've been in the restroom) you'll hear a gentle beep every few minutes, so you know you received an sms while you've been busy. Is there a way to get this behaviour on windows mobile (6.5)? I found nothing to activate this in the menu, but maybe it's hidden somewhere. • Apple, Time Capsule: can I use it for servers ?

  hi, i was wondering if I can use Time Capsule from a server. Let's say I have an ubuntu server, and I'm running some websites and web applications on it. I would install these appications on ubuntu but then store the "file folders" of each website or application (with images, videos, etc.. ) on Airport capsule and leave only the application files on the server. • Time Machine doesn't back up some folders/files (that it should)

  MacBook Pro 17" (Snow Leopard) -- WD 2TB external drive MacBook Pro 13" (Snow Leopard) -- Seagate 1TB external drive I find that Time Machine sometimes doesn't back up new folders (and the files in them). This occurs both when I choose "Back Up Now" from the Time Machine icon in the Menu Bar and in TM's scheduled backups. These are not excluded folders (nor are then in the TM do-not-back-up list); they're perfectly normal folders (at various locations) inside my home folder. The only way to force them to be backed up is to restart the computer (unmounting & mounting the TM external disk does not help). There seems to be a correlation with new folders (i.e., it's more likely to happen that an entire new folder is not backed up), but this may just be observer bias (because those are the folders that I go check to see if they've been backed up). It's not computer dependent (it happens on two different computers). It's not external disk dependent (it happens on two different external disks). It's not time dependent (not restarting for several days does not fix the problem). What does a restart change that these other events don't? I'm considering deleting the /.fseventsd folder (without restarting the computer) to see if that helps. I haven't tried logging out and logging in (without restarting the computer).
