  • Getting HTTP GET variables using Tipfy

    Hey everyone, I'm currently playing around with tipfy on Google's Appengine and just recently ran into a problem: I can't for the life of me find any documentation on how to use GET variables in my application, I've tried sifting through both tipfy and Werkzeug's documentations with no success. I know that I can use request.form.get('variable') to get POST variables and **kwargs in my handlers for URL variables, but that's as much as the documentation will tell me. Any ideas?

    I'm contemplating a single SQL trigger to handle INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE operations as part of an auditing process. Is there any statement, function or @@ variable I can interrogate to find out which operation type launched the trigger? I've seen the following pattern: declare @type char(1) if exists (select * from inserted) if exists (select * from deleted) select @Type = 'U' else select @Type = 'I' else select @Type = 'D' but is there anything else a little more direct or explicit?   • Java operator overloading

    Not using operators makes my code obscure. (aNumber / aNother) * count is better than aNumber.divideBy(aNother).times(count) After 6 months of not writing a single comment I had to write a comment to the simple operation above. Usually I refactor until I don't need comment. And this made me realize that it is easier to read and perceive math symbols and numbers than their written forms. For example TWENTY_THOUSAND_THIRTEEN.plus(FORTY_TWO.times(TWO_HUNDERED_SIXTY_ONE)) is more obscure than 20013 + 42*261 So do you know a way to get rid of obscurity while not using operator overloading in Java? Update: I did not think my exaggeration on comments would cause such trouble to me. I am admitting that I needed to write comment a couple of times in 6 months. But not more than 10 lines in total. Sorry for that. Update 2: Another example: budget.plus(bonusCoefficient.times(points)) is more obscure than budget + bonusCoefficient * points I have to stop and think on the first one, at first sight it looks like clutter of words, on the other hand, I get the meaning at first look for the second one, it is very clear and neat. I know this cannot be achieved in Java but I wanted to hear some ideas about my alternatives.

  • Access modifiers in Object-Oriented Programming

    I don't understand Access Modifiers in OOP. Why do we make for example in Java instance variables private and then use public getter and setter methods to access them? I mean what's the reasoning/logic behind this? You still get to the instance variable but why use setter and getter methods when you can just make your variables public? please excuse my ignorance as I am simply trying to understand why?     C++0x has added explicit conversion operators, but they must always be defined as members of the Source class. The same applies to the assignment operator, it must be defined on the Target class. When the Source and Target classes of the needed conversion are independent of each other, neither the Source can define a conversion operator, neither the Target can define a constructor from a Source.   • Try-Catch or Check Length? C# XNA

    I was just wondering which would be cheaper, using a try catch block for index out of bounds or checking the length of a multi dimensional array and comparing values? I have a feeling it's the length, since I can store the length in a variable and then just do if's which are relatively cheap. I'm just not sure how expensive try-catch is. Thanks!
