• Windows XP Blue-Screens And Reboots Instantly On Boot-Up

  My computer was running perfectly until yesterday; my internet suddenly died. Being wireless, I decided to reboot; now the computer doesn't boot. It shows the "Starting Windows" screen (safe mode loads several drivers), then it suddenly blue-screens and immediately reboots (I cannot read the blue-screen contents at all). I've tried safe-mode (with and without networking); no dice. I booted another HD with another XP install and ran scandisk on my HDs; no bad sectors, and even with auto-repair, it didn't fix the problem. Now what? What are my options to fix the broken XP install? I'm thinking: 1) Remove wireless card 2) Run XP install CD and repair installation 3) ???

• rdesktop + seamlessrdp + virtualbox slow on Windows

  I'm trying to get VirtualBox seamless mode to work on all of my monitors at once. I was directed to this link, so I followed the instructions, using the windows port of rdesktop 1.6 found here, and using Xming as an X server. I eventually finally got it to work! However, it's really slow. While VirtualBox's regular seamless mode is as performant as if I was running apps on my host machine, with rdesktop it takes 1-2 seconds to register any user input. Dragging windows around is laggy and buggy (pieces of the desktop behind the window show through). I'm simply connecting to localhost, so network bandwidth/latency shouldn't be an issue... anyone have any idea why it's so slow and what I can do to make it more performant?

• Are you supposed to type '6' with the left hand or the right hand?

  A few weeks ago, I did a Google Images search for keyboard finger charts to see which fingers I'm supposed to be using to type which keys. According to the charts, '6' is supposed to be typed with the right hand: (as shown on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typing) However, today I spotted a split keyboard in a store with the '6' on the left side of the split. Indeed, an image search for split keyboards indicates that this is the norm: (as shown on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Natural_keyboard) When doing touch typing "correctly", should I go with the finger charts (type 6 with my right hand), or should I go with the split keyboards (type 6 with my left hand)? <troll> Is this just another example of Microsoft not following the standards? </troll>

  A client recently switched to Exchange Server / Outlook for their email. Since then emails from my company to any email address at their company bounce back from the System Administrator with this error: Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients. Subject: Email Solution Sent: 12/12/2012 11:08 AM The following recipient(s) cannot be reached: 'name@client.org' on 12/12/2012 11:08 AM 550 5.1.1 <[email protected]> recipient rejected Looking in the Message Options of the bounce back email shows no data in the Internet Header field. My client's IT guy says we're not being blocked, but I cant think of any other reason the bounce would occur. Any suggestions on what questions to ask or how to fix this would be helpful. I'm using a desktop version of Outlook 2007 and connecting through my ISP. Thanks.

So far I added to my .htaccess-file: # block doamins and all subdomains Deny from .example.org # block domainrange: 1.2.3.[1-255] Deny from 1.2.3. # Block single IP Deny from 2.3.4.5 but still I had problems with spam from e.g. server1.example.org. What is wrong with my script? Is it also possible to redirect all requests from certain hosts/IPs to a document (say: info.html)?

• Chrome - Why am I automatically authenticated to a web app even after clearing browser cookies?

  I am accessing a web application using Chrome. If I sign out of the app and clear all Chrome history/cookies/etc (even Flash cookies which are now handled by Chrome in the same Clear History area) and then re-access the site, I am automatically logged in without being prompted for credentials. I then launched Chrome in Incognito mode and was able to reproduce the same behavior. However, the I was prompted upon the first logon while in Incognito mode. The web application behaves as expected in Internet Explorer 10. Some info about the application: It's a Sharepoint site using NTLM authentication The credentials are Active Directory-based, as the username is domain\username My connection is over the Internet and there is no AD relationship between my local Windows account, my Windows PC. In other words I (meaning my locally logged on user and my PC) are not in any way part of their AD domain. The site is running SSL on port 443 Why might Chrome be automatically authenticating me?

• Can you set up a gaming LAN using OpenVPN installed in a VMware guest OS and be playing the game on the host OS?

  I would like to setup a gaming VPN. Ie. I have some games that work over LAN and would like to play them with people that are not on my LAN. I know I can do this with OpenVPN. My ultimate goal would be to run OpenVPN portably on my host OS and not even need any virtualization. As such i don't want to install it on my host, but i'm fine with running it portably. I'm even fine with temporarily adding registry keys, and then running a .reg file to remove these entries once i'm done. To this effect i have installed OpenVPN on a virtual machine and diffed the registry. I then manually (using a .reg file) added all the keys that seem important on my host OS and copied the installation folder of OpenVPN onto my host machine. Then i try to run openVPN GUI 1.0.3 as a test and it says "Error opening registy for reading (HKLM\SOFTWARE\OpenVPN). OpenVPN is probably not installed". I verified that that key is indeed in the registry with all subkeys and it looks correct. I have tried running the GUI as an administrator and in compatibility mode with no success. I am running Windows 7. If this fails then i would be happy with installing OpenVPN on a virtual machine in VMWare but they key is that i will be running the game installed on my host machine. The first question for this option is if this is even possible. The second is, that I can't get the VM to have internet access if I use bridging but i can if i use NAT. Is it possible to do this game VPN setup with VMWare guest OS running using NAT? Summary of questions: -Is it possible to run openVPN portably and if so what did i miss above? -If it's not possible to run it portably, then can setup a gaming LAN by installing OpenVPN in a guest OS with NAT and how can i do this? -If the above is not possible then can i install OpenVPN in a guest using bridging and if so how can i set this up with a Windows 7 host and Windows XP guest as currently i can't get the guest to be able to access the internet in bridging mode, but it working in NAT mode. -In general is there any good documentation on setting up a gaming LAN with OpenVPN (i am using 2.1.4) as i have never set up a VPN of any sort before so any help would be much appreciated. • Is there an FTP client for Windows 7 with a text-based UI? (not text-prompt based, like ftp.exe)

  Is there such as thing as a text-mode FTP client for Windows 7 ? By 'text-mode' I mean one that runs in a CMD.EXE window as opposed to a Windows GUI application. It also needs to be something along the lines of FileZilla, i.e. menu-driven as opposed to command-entry clients like NcFTP or indeed the built-in one. edit: To avoid confusion, what I mean is an application similar to that pictured (ZTreeWin File Manager), which runs from CMD.EXE and uses text characters for its UI, within the CMD.EXE window. The built-in FTP client, and things like NcFTP offer a prompt at which you issue commands. That's not what I'm looking for.

• Printer offline until spooler service is restarted multiple times

  When I try to print from my ThinkPad to a printer shared through a Windows 7 Homegroup hosted by a desktop computer, I often have to restart the Print Spooler service several times before the job will go through. In particular, this problem occurs when the desktop is in sleep mode when the print job is started and then brought out of sleep mode after the print job has been kicked off. Both computers are running Windows 7 32-bit edition with the latest patches. • Increase the compression performance of VPN

  I am currently switching from a system with HPN-SSH tunnels and enabled compression to something VPN based. I have tried tinc and n2n so far, hamachi requires a library I do not have. In my primitive benchmarks I am not satisfied with the achievable bandwidth compared to the SSH tunnels. In tinc the low LZO setting performed best, but compression is only available in UDP mode. Ideally I would like to have a TCP-based VPN with a multi-threaded compression. Can you suggest me some ideas how to increase the performance? Would it be possible to somehow put a compression filter in front of the tun interface? Or are there any VPN implementations that might be better suited for my needs (fast compression, TCP-based, switch mode, does not have to be super-secure)? I would consider tunnelling Ethernet over SSH, but according to some articles it is not advisable.

  I have an Apache server which is hanging for some reason. When I normally want to check on the load of an Apache server, I tend to use mod_status via the URL at http://webserver1.example.org/server-status or from the commandline like service httpd fullstatus. However today, the Server is refusing all new connections. Some mysterious problem is causing connections to stall, which means that number of connections fills up all available connections (e.g. The number of connects exceeds the MaxClients setting), and therefore neither http://webserver1.example.org/server-status nor service httpd fullstatus can return anything. Is it possible to configure Apache to reserve one or two slots for the mod_status pages?

• startx error no desktop manager

  I have Backtrack 5R2 KDE. I started recovery mode and did a failsafe xorg configuration. After that, I cannot load the KDE manager when I enter the startx command after logging in. Whenever I do a startx command (as root), the result resembles the following: This is not the actual output (I just drew this with MS paint because I cannot do a printscreen). The screen is just black with the icon in the upper left corner. The other pop-up menu appears when left-clicking the mouse. I tried the cp xorg.conf.failsafe xorg.conf advice from other websites with no luck. I have also tried the 'reconfigure option(s)' form the recovery mode with no success.

• Multiple Reporting Services databases in one instance?

  Is it possible to have multiple Reporting Services databases in one MSSQL instance? I have a MSSQL 2008 R2 with RS set to SharePoint Integrated Mode. This RS is in use and can't be changed. I do however need a RS in native mode for the TFS installation to be able to use it. Am I required to set up a new instance of MSSQL? Bonus question: If so, is that permitted under the MS licensing scheme or is it an additional cost?

• Hue shift on youtube.com (but not when embedded!)

  This is easily the oddest problem I've yet had. When I'm on youtube, and I look at a video, the hue is all wrong. Pure red becomes pure blue, and all the other colors shift accordingly. Faces in particular are shades of blue so I call this "avatar mode". Avatar mode happens on any video I view while on youtube.com. BUT, if I view the same video when embedded, colors are fine! EDIT: OS: Gentoo Linux, happens in all browsers

I've called my hosting company support and they're able to connect to this server using my ftp credentials. I've also tried to connect on another machine on my network and have the same issue. Could it be the firewall? My ISP?

• How to force 640*480@60Hz screen resolution on xubuntu 12.04

  It seems xubuntu won't be able to correctly set resolution at 640*480@60Hz at its Display settings. And I am unable to correctly my super small 6.4 inch Mitsubishi VGA panel via VGA cable. I have tried to hack both X11 conf /etc/X11/Xorg.conf and xfce4 conf, but all the document I can find is outdated. and conf files are changed into other location. Can someone give me a hand and I'll mark correct for other people to use? Thanks! EDIT: The board is an Intel Atom D2700, gpu is SGX545. I tried to use xrandr --output default --mode 640*480 It seems works fine, but refresh rate is 75Hz, but the screen only suports 60Hz So I used xrandr --output default --mode 640*480 --rate 60 but it give error: xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Can anyone pointing any directions?

• VNC unattended Server (No user Interaction)

  I worked on a proof on concept a while ago.... whereby I managed to get VNC going in full "unattended" mode... I.e. The VNC Server dials into the viewer... which is running in Listening mode. The same concept of how single click works, but without the user interaction. I cant seem to locate my source files for this concept I worked on... although I have found my shortcut that worked on the Viewer side to listen. "C:\Program Files\UltraVNC\vncviewer.exe" -listen 5007 /noauto /256colors I can not however remember/locate my demo of what the server is doing.... how to configure it. If I remember correctly, the server was also started with command line params that "dialed" into a remote IP/port, that the viewer is listening on. Any ideas? Thanks

• Toshiba Equium A110-252 laptop won't boot Windows.

  I have a Toshiba Equium A110-252 laptop (XP Pro) which stopped booting a couple of weeks ago. The symptoms are that the laptop would display its DOS Toshiba splash screen, then the Windows (XP) boot screen would display, then a very brief blue screen flash, then back to the boot options screen (offering safe mode, safe mode with networking etc, last known good config, etc... none of these work). I assumed a duff HD, and swapped it for a new one and reinstalled from a TrueImage backup. This worked until I installed windows updates I think (the backup was a few months old), and now the PC is doing the same thing. I have installed a third, old HD (60GB) with Ubuntu 11.04 on it, and everything is fine. PC boots and runs Ubuntu beautifully. I need Windows running on it though ! Given these symptoms, could it a windows update issue ? Or might I have a hardware fault still ?

• Pasting into Vista cmd.exe broke, why?

  I use Windows Vista x64 and regularly use the command line window CMD.EXE. I have enabled QuickEdit Mode (and Insert Mode and AutoComplete), to be able to quickly copy and paste text. Copying (select block, Enter) works fine. Pasting (right click) text also works, as long as it has been copied inside a CMD.EXE window. When I copied the text somewhere else (in an editor, browser or whatever) however, pasting into CMD.EXE does not work! :-( Using the menu to Edit, Paste does not do anything either, so it's not a mouse thing. I also tried elevating CMD.EXE. I can copy/paste freely between CMD.EXE instances of all sorts: elevated/normal, x64/x86... I'm sure it did work on this machine until relatively recently. What could have happened? Some Windows Update perhaps? The problem has been reported by others, but without a solution.

• IIS: redirect everything to another URL, except for one Directory

  I have an IIS server (IIS 6, Win 2003) that hosts the site http://www.foo.com. I want any request to http://foo.com (no matter what path/filename is used) to redirect to http://www.bar.org/AwesomePage.html UNLESS the request is for http://www.foo.com/specialdir, in which case the HTML files in the local directory specialdir should be used. The problem I have is once the redirect is set it also affects /specialdir - even if I right click on that directory and select "content should come from ... local directory" that change does not take effect, and the directory still shows as redirecting to http://www.bar.org/AwesomePage.html. The same thing happens if I try to set individual files to load from the local system instead of redirecting - IIS gives no error, but the change does not take effect and the files still show as being redirected. How can I set specialdir to override the redirection to the new URL?

  On a friends laptop following some viruses infestations there is a problem in starting the Windows firewall. The error is: Could not start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing(ICS) service on Local Computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified When attempting to turn on automatic updates in the security centre, the message is: We're sorry. The Security Center could not change your Automatic Updates settings. To try changing these settings yourself, go to System in Control Panel. On the Automtic Updates tab, select Automatic (recommended), and then click OK. All the options under "Automatic Updates" are greyed out. I've tried the suggestions below and many others: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/sharedaccess.htm http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/892199 http://windowsxp.mvps.org/repairwmi.htm I can't do a repair install because the installer doesn't detect existing versions. What is the advantage of using the above setup, where the services are run using runit via Monit. Why use runit in the middle, instead of directly starting them with monit?

• X server not starting up after new kernel compilation

  I have compiled the Kernel on my 64-bit Debian XPS Studio 1340 Dell system. srikanth@debian:~ - 05:40:52 PM - $ uname -a Linux debian 2.6.32-5-amd64 #1 SMP Thu Mar 22 17:26:33 UTC 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux Kernel version that I have used and compiled from kernel.org is 2.6.35.13 I have nvidia installed on old kernel. I got the old config and I used the same config to compile the new kernel. Everything went well and I got two debian packages ( image and headers ) which I have installed on my system. When I select the new kernel on the boot menu and I go into it, the X server is not starting up possibly because I have to "rebuild" ( not sure how to do that ) according to this link: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/x-server-not-starting-after-kernel-compilation-605265/ Can you suggest how to do the rebuild on nvidia module so that I can start x ( without seeing any blank screen or error saying nvidia module is missing ) ?
