  Hi I would be very thankful if someone could help me on explaining this logwatch summary of my postfix installation on my ubuntu 10.04 vps. I dont really know if this might be a normal log file because of the many authentication failed entries and foreign IP addresses. Any advise for a novice? • Looking for cheap Wireless router, with USB for attached USB disk drive

  I have a 802.11b router at home (DLink DI-614+ (B rev)) and it is working perfectly well for me. I want to replace it though, since it is out of updates, and now several years old and heck, I want a new toy to configure! I was trying to decide what to get. I could care less about 802.11g or n support, since B is fast enough, but every device in my house is now B/G, so G would be fine for me. N buys me little to nothing. (Small enough house that range is a non-issue). The features I realized I want are a USB port for sharing a USB hard drive. I would like to have a central device I could store files on. I do not want to waste the power of an always running PC to do this, so a router seems like the place to go. I would love it, if it could support Vonage VOIP as well, then I could ditch a power brick from a second device (I have the small DLink Vonage VOIP box). All the current examples of this router (with USB drive, yet to find one with VOIP too!) are in the $100+ range, and N and silly, when a B/G is in the $30 range around here.

• ATI gpu (video accel, decode, encode, ATI Stream, DXVA)

  Okay its a long question title for sure. I'm looking for a new video card (yes,SU is not a page for that, but wait). I've been a loyal NVidia customer ever since, now using a 8600gts. Old but still somewhat good, its a bit slow though. I want an upgrade because 8600gts wont support better vdpau and new features. I checked out the prices and the documents, I would need a GTX260 card. Which costs ..well.. a lot. ATI performs much better for that price. (At least on every test it outperforms GTX260). However, as far as I know there is no gpu accel with ATI. The things you can use is DXVA only, no other method. Could you correct me out there? Will be there a gpu accel for ATI also? Or is there one available? (DXVA is not bad, but kinda slow compared to NVIdia's CUDA.) What about openCL? How does ATI support that? (I'm talking about the 5850 ATI card at the minute, I would buy that instead of the NVidia.)

• switchless Infiniband between two servers on RHEL 6.3

  I have 2 servers running RHEL 6.3 which have 2 port Infiniband cards >lspci | grep -i infini 07:00.0 InfiniBand: QLogic Corp. IBA7322 QDR InfiniBand HCA (rev 02) I'm interested in connecting them directly to each other bypassing an Infiniband switch (which I don't have). Quick googling showed that at least in some configurations it's possible. I installed all RedHat Infiniband packages with yum groupinstall "Infiniband Support". However, ibv_devinfo shows that both ports in each card are down, which indicates that cables are not connected. But the cable is connected, although the LEDs are off on the cards (not a good sign). Another source of confusion for me is that according to this, RedHat doesn't come with OFED packages and I'm slightly hesitant to install them from source due to the lack of RedHat support for them... So where am I going with this? The questions I have are: is it possible to have a switchless/direct Infiniband connection between two servers the way I described above? If it's possible, do I have to use the OFED packages or can I configure everything with just the packages coming with RHEL. Why are the LEDs off on my servers even though the cable is connected? Any additional input/advice/pointers would be appreciated. P.S. I followed this guide for installation instructions. The Infiniband cards are clearly recognized by my OS and the rdma service is running. Update: I have opensm installed. Here is what I have done: In C:/PHP/php.ini and C:/PHP/php-cgi-fcgi.ini I have made the extension_dir = "C:/PHP/ext" I uncommented extension=php_openssl.dll I went to http://windows.php.net/download/ and got the thread safe version with the PHP 5.4 (5.4.8) version of DLL's In C:/PHP/ext I replaced the php_openssl.dll with the one I downloaded In System32 and SysWOW64 I added the following DLL's ssleay.dll libeay.dll I restarted the IIS server in the Server Manager under Web Server and stopped and started the World Wide Web Publishing Service That didn't work, so I tried same thing with the unthreaded versions. I have the following motherboard Tyan Thunder K8WE S2895A2NRF Motherboard - extended ATX - nForce Pro 2200/2050 - Socket 940 - UDMA133, Serial ATA-300 (RAID) - 2 x Gigabit Ethernet - FireWire - 6-1 channel audio This is part of a computer that was assembled in the winter of 2006/2007. The user manual says the following with regard to SATA Integrated SATAII Generation 1 Controllers (from NForce Professional 2200) Two integrated dual port SATA II controllers Four SATA connectors support up to four drives 3 Gb/s per direction per channel NvRAID v2.0 support Supports RAID 0, 1, 0+1 and JBOD. I just purchased a SATA DVD burner. Here is the page for the product http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B002QGDWLK/ The problem I am facing is that I already have 4 SATA drives installed. I don't want to remove any of them. However, I want the DVD burner above installed as well. The person I am consulting with here (Bombay, India) tells me that my four available SATA ports are filled, and that my only option is to install a SATA card into the one free PCI slot on the motherboard. However, he says that with this setup I will not be able to boot from the DVD drive. Are these statements correct, and what are my other options if any? Even it the statements in the last para are true, I suppose I could use one of the motherboard connectors/ports there are currently being used with the hard drives with the DVD drive, and use the "add-on" connector with one of the hard drives. Not all the 4 hard drives need to be bootable. BTW, despite having read through http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA#Cables.2C_connectors.2C_and_ports I am fuzzy on the differences between connectors, cables and ports. Thanks in advance.

• Node.js, Nginx and Varnish with WebSockets

  I'm in the process of architecting the backend of a new Node.js web app that i'd like to be pretty scalable, but not overkill. In all of my previous Node.js deployments, I have used Nginx to serve static assets such as JS/CSS and reverse proxy to Node (As i've heard Nginx does a much better job of this / express is not really production ready). However, Nginx does not support WebSockets. I am making extensive use of Socket.IO for the first time and discovered many articles detailing this limitation. Most of them suggest using Varnish to direct the WebSockets traffic directly to node, bypassing Nginx. This is my current setup: Varnish : Port 80 - Routing HTTP requests to Nginx and WebSockets directly to node Nginx : Port 8080 - Serving Static Assets like CSS/JS Node.js Express: Port 3000 - Serving the App, over HTTP + WebSockets However, there is now the added complexity that Varnish doesn't support HTTPS, which requires Stunnel or some other solution, it's also not load balanced yet (Perhaps i will use HAProxy or something). The complexity is stacking up! I would like to keep things simpler than this if possible. Is it still necessary to reverse proxy Node.js using Nginx when Varnish is also present? As even if express is slow at serving static files, they should theoretically be cached by Varnish. Or are there better ways to implement this?

• System hangs while rebooting on Debian...

  Hi, I have Debian (Kernel 2.6.26-2-686) installed on two computers. On one of them it reboots quite finely but I am having following problem with rebooting Debian on my second computer. When i type reboot at the Linux prompt, following messages appear and system hangs up after saying "Restarting System": Broadcast message from root@myname (tty1) (Sun Jan 17 11:23:26 2010) The system is going down for reboot NOW! INIT: Switching to runlevel: 6 INIT: Sending processes the TERM signal Saving system clock Stopping enhanced syslog: rsyslogd. Asking all remaining processes to terminate...done. Deconfiguring network interfaces...done. Cleaning up ifupdown.... Deactivating swap...done. [ 31.789103] Restarting System. _ Normally when the sytem is busy "" sign blinks but "" at the last line above does not blink which shows, the system hanged up. I tried all keys but the screen is still frozen at the same point. The difference that I noted between my two computers is that I don't have ACPI support in the BIOS of the system which is giving me this error whereas the BIOS of my first computer do have ACPI support on which Debain do not give this restart-hanging problem. I have also disabled running the acpid script by running update-rc.d -f acpid remove but the problem still persists on the second computer. Any ideas to solve or get around this problem?

• Retail windows xp prof sp 2 Lost key but have the genuine cd , what to do?

  I had recently formatted my system only to find out i have lost the cd key to my original cd. i had used the option to enter the product key later. Yes, i know its a stupid thing to do but i bought the cd in 2008 from a retail store and i lost the original packaging. the actual label on the cd is includes service pack version 2002 .@2004 microsoft corporation reserved. There are some numbers on the back side of the cd in the inner ring. i cant for the life of me figure out how what is the use of the genuine cd i have with me when i cant seem to activate it. what exactly is the advantage of having the original cd in your possession in situations like this?. i have tried the unattend.txt and it doesnt contain the correct key. and there does not exist any winnnt.sif file in the cd. where on the cd or in it can i find the product id information i stay in india . and my attempts at trying the microsoft support site keeps getting me directed to page which says they had stopped support for windows xp in 2011. lets say by some miracle i do contact microsoft. what information would i have to provide them? and would they be giving me the product key for my cd key from their database? or a new key?

• Attempts at NIC teaming on Server 2008 R2 with PRO/1000 MT

  I have a Dell PowerEdge 1850 server and a gigabit switch that supports nic teaming (and was configured to do so). The server has a total of four Intel PRO/1000 MT ports, which also support teaming. But.. for some reason Intel does not actually have a version of the drivers/ProSet that will work for these cards on 2008 R2. You have to use the built-in drivers that come with 2008 R2, which do not support the additional features. According to their website, they have no plans to change this. Strangely enough, I experimented with various drivers in an attempt to force it to work. At one point, the teaming was working, but there were side effects (such as the DNS server refusing to start). So now I am back to running just one of the cards, (very) frustrated about the whole situation. I have looked all over to see if there is some way around this, but have not had any success. I know I can probably just get a new network adapter for it, but with the good deal I got, that would cost more than the server! :) While staying with 2008 R2, does anyone know of any possible alternatives? • If spaces in filenames are possible, why do some of us still avoid using them?

  Somebody I know expressed irritation today regarding those of us who tend not to use spaces in our filenames, e.g. NamingThingsLikeThis.txt -- despite most modern operating systems supporting spaces in filenames. Non-technical people must look at filenames created by geeks and wonder where we learned English. So, what are the reasons that spaces in filenames are avoided or discouraged? The most obvious reason I could think of, and why I typically avoid it, are the extra quotes required on the command line when dealing with such files. Are there any other significant reasons, other than the practice being a vestigial preference? UPDATE: Thanks for all your answers! I'm surprised how popular this was. So, here's a summary: Six Reasons Why Geeks Prefer Filenames Without Spaces In Them It's irritating to put quotes around them when referenced on the command line (or elsewhere.) Some older operating systems didn't used to support them and us old dogs are used to that. Some tools still don't support spaces in filenames at all or very well. (But they should.) It's irritating to escape spaces when used where spaces must be escaped, such as URLs. Certain unenlightened services (e.g. file hosting, webmail) remove or replace spaces anyway! Names without spaces can be shorter, which is sometimes desirable as paths are limited.

• What are the advantages and disadvantages of the various virtual machine image formats?

  Xen and Virtualbox etc both support a range of different virtual machine image formats. These are: vmdk, vdi, qcow & qcow2, hdd & vhd. Without any bias toward a particular product, I'm wanting to know what are the advantages and disadvantages of the various formats both from a features perspective, robustness and speed? One piece of info I discovered in a forum post was this: "The major difference is that VDI uses relatively large blocks (1MB) when growing an image, and thus has less overhead for block pointers etc. but isn't ultimately space efficient in the sense that if a single byte is non-zero in such a 1MB block the entire space is used. VMDK in contrast uses 64K blocks, and thus has more management overhead and generally a bit less disk space consumption What offsets this is that VDI is more efficient when it comes to snapshots." You might be thinking, I want to know this because I want to know which format to choose? Not exactly, I'm developing some software which utilises these formats and want to support one or more of them. Simplicity, large disks and ease of development are my main drivers.

Versions of (I think) the stuff involved are: kernel: 2.6.32-5-xen-amd64 ii nfs-kernel-server 1:1.2.2-4squeeze2 support for NFS kernel server ii libnfsidmap2 0.23-2 An nfs idmapping library ii nfs-common 1:1.2.2-4squeeze2 NFS support files common to client and server ii portmap 6.0.0-2 RPC port mapper (The client doesn't have nfs-kernel-server involved.) I have a directory with ACLs: # file: dirname # owner: jon # group: foogroup # flags: -s- user::rwx user:www-data:rwx group::r-x group:foogroup:rwx mask::rwx other::r-x default:... There are two users, neither one of which owns the directory: uid=3001(jake) gid=3001(jake) groups=3001(jake),104(wheel),3999(foogroup) uid=3005(nic) gid=3005(nic) groups=3005(nic),3999(foogroup) The jake user can create files in the directory without issues. The nic user can't. All UIDs/GIDs are the same on the client and server. I've verified (packet sniffing) that the right uids/gids get sent via AUTH_UNIX are correct-- uid=gid=3005, auxiliary gids=3005,3999-- and that the server replies with NFS3ERR_ACCESS, which the kernel on the client maps to EACCES (Permission denied). Can anyone help me here?

  Today we got the executive green light to proceed with changing from a Domino platform to Exchange. The business prefers Exchange for a messaging platform. (even though IMO IBM Domino is fine - if it aint broke, don't fix it but it was not my call). I have been put in charge of Domino to Exchange process goes smoothly as possible. I have also been told to put together costs for this project. I have some questions and concerns re: network design, licensing, costs: The current setup is as follows. 1 HQ office (100 users), 1 secondary office (50 users), 5 branch offices (under 10 users). 5 different email domains Windows Server 2003 functional level with a few 2008 R2 Servers Lotus Domino Notes Servers (one in each office) Ironmail Appliance Public Domino Web Mail server Majority G5+ Proliant Servers Domino Blackberry Enterprise license and server No VoIP phones What are the basic hardware requirements for Exchange 2007 or 2010? Can I simply purchase a single physical server? Will each office require an Exchange server or possibly additional servers (roles)? How is email routed to the smaller branch offices? Standard or Enterprise licenses? The business has been running Domino (messaging and application services) for over 10 years and also want Exchange to support email services, Blackberry, Outlook Web Access, possibly support for iPhone devices.   We are trying to use ASP.Net MVC with Siteminder for Single Sign on. This is on Windows Server 2008 R2 with IIS 7.5. Siteminder Agent version 6QMR6. Problem : Siteminder protects physical files that are exist. And it is not protecting the folder when we try to access a non existed file. It must redirect to login page even if the file doesn't exist when the user is accessing a protected folder. How to configure in IIS 7.5 that Do not verify a file exist, before authentication by siteminder. SiteMinderWebAgent is a Handler(WildCard Script Map) we created using the ISAPI6WebAgent.dll How to Protect ASP.Net MVC Request with Siteminder? (Added this as My previous question did not solve the problem). MVC Request shows up in IIS Log but not in Siteminder log. Update : Microsoft Support says currently IIS7.5, even in earlier versions doesnt support wildcard mappings on any two Isapi Handlers with * wild card. Currently in my case Siteminder has * wildcard and asp.net mvc (handler is aspnet_isapi) has * wildcard to handle the reqeusts. Ordered priority doesnt work in the wild card mappings case with Just *. Did not convinced with the answer but will wait till tomorrow for them to get back.

• Can any iSCSI NAS appliance replicate / clone a LUN to an external drive?

  I would like to backup using Windows Imaging to some kind of NAS appliance. I believe this will require the NAS to support iSCSI. I would then like the appliance to support the replication of the iSCSI LUN to an external eSATA or USB disk connected directly to the appliance. I've found plenty of NAS appliances that can do iSCSI and replicate to an external drive, but none that I've found thus far can do both at once. That is, the devices can do iSCSI, but then the replication feature doesn't work. The idea here is to backup to an appliance located in a secure office far away from the server room. Offsite backups to external hard drive could be managed from the appliance. The benefits of such a setup would be: 1) very unlikely that fire or random theft would affect both server-room backup and "remote" backup appliance 2) offsite backups could be managed by multiple trusted people without granting access to server room 3) Windows imaging provides poor man's deduplication, so each backup volume can contain a decent backup history. I understand why this would be a non-trivial thing to implement, but I'm wondering if such a thing exists? Preferably a tabletop, low to medium cost device. Alternative solutions welcome. NOTE: I'm backing up very few but very large files, so file replication is not a good option.

• Options for synchronizing Palm Desktop calendars

  My wife and I each have Palm Centro phones and very full calendars. We've been using Palm products for years and are happy with them and are not looking to switch (and don't have the budget for it even if we wanted to). What is a viable way we can synchronize our calendars? Back when we had Palm Z22s we used AirSet. It worked great in synchronizing our desktop calendars. Unfortunately, their sync software does not support Palm Desktop v6 and there is nothing in the pipeline to support it. (The third party vendor is apparently not interested in updating for the newer Palm desktop.) I would love to be able to get back to having each other's appointments appear on the other's calendar. What can we do? Some limitations: A data plan is not an option (so this precludes over-the-air synchronization options) No Microsoft Outlook Edit: Syncing my Palm to my Palm Desktop is not the issue. Being able to sync, in some way, the Palm calendar databases of my wife's and my calendars is what's desired.

• Update BIOS on Sun Fire X4150 server

  I have some Sun Fire X4150 servers with a very old BIOS release (1ADQW015), which seems to have some compatibility problems with WMware ESX Server 3.5 and Windows 2008 R2 virtual machines; so I want to update the BIOS on them. The problem: according to this page, if your servers run ELOM (mine do), you first need to update to the latest ELOM release, then to the interim transition release, then finally you can update to the latest one. Ok, I'm willing to do that... but it looks like Sun (now Oracle) will happily let you download the latest firmware DVD (3.3.0), but it will not let you download the transition release (2.0) if you don't have a support contract. Well, I actuall don't care at all about the servers' management controllers (we don't even use them), so upgrading from ELOM to ILOM is totally irrelevant to me; but I need to update the servers' BIOS. So my question is: can I update the servers' BIOS to the latest version without doing the full ELOM-to-ILOM migration, or will this not work (or even make the servers unusable)? Do BIOS versions and SP ones need to be matched, or can one be updated without bothering with the other? Bonus question: if this whole ELOM-to-ILOM thing actually is needed in order to update the BIOS, can that 2.0 CD-ROM be obtained without having a support contract with Sun/Oracle (which we are definitely not going to sign, being that quite old hardware)? Update: I tried upgrading only the BIOS on one of the servers, and it didn't boot anymore. So it really looks like a full firmware upgrade is needed, and the management controller and BIOS versions should be kept in sync. So... where can I find that *&!£%$% 2.0 CD-ROM? Or at least the transition firmware that can be found on it?

• Outlook and IMAP - Outlook doesn't allow the Drafts and Trash folders to sync with the respective IMAP folders

  I'm using Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010 against an IMAP server (the problem exists across many, like Gmail, you name it). Outlook lets you set your Outlook "Sent" folder to map to the IMAP server's Sent folder (the other choice is to map your Outlook Sent to your Personal Folders Sent) - this is good. When you send a message from Outlook and then look in the sent folder of the IMAP server (e.g. from a different client or from a browser), the messages are there. This is the behavior I want. Outlook does NOT support the same behavior for Drafts and Trash. In both cases, items deleted (or Drafts saved) in Outlook go in to Outlook's local folders and do NOT show on the IMAP server's Trash or Drafts folders. Same problem in reverse. Thunderbird on the other hand does support the proper mapping of Drafts, Sent and Trash. I expected this to be IMAP-specific but it appears to be client specific. What does Outlook implement it this way and is there a workaround?

• Is "DSLAM congestion" a legitimate reason for slow DSL?

  My DSL has been extremely slow in the evenings recently. To test it, I telnet to my DSL Modem, and ping the gateway. This way I eliminate internet congestion and local network issues. In the mornings I get 30ms - 50ms pings. In the evenings, it bounces around a lot, but 10000ms pings are common. I complained to Qwest support, and they said it was a known issue on their end, their engineers were working on it, and wouldn't say anything else. A couple days later I complained again, and they sent out a technician. He tested my house wiring and found that one of them had a short. It was an unused line, so we disconnected it, and he said things looked better and left. My daytime speeds improved at this point, but evening is still bad. I complained to Qwest support again, and they said it was a problem with DSLAM congestion at their end, and that they were working on it, but no ETA. My neighbor has Qwest DSL and doesn't seem to have these problems. That seems strange. I go use her network when I absolutely must get online and mine is behaving badly. I can't tell if they're yanking my chain or not. Regardless, these speeds are crap. I'm paying for 7Mpbs but am lucky if I get 1/10th that in the evenings. My kids like to watch Netflix streaming movies, and it's just impossible after 5pm or so. Should I wait it out? Will complaining again produce any results? Should I change my subscription to a lower speed until they fix their end? Or switch to cable?

  Hi! I've some question about this router. Before starting, some configurations, specified by my provider. Wan1 VPN IP - 192.168.172.84 Mask - 255.255.255.0 Gateway - 192.168.172.253 DNS - 195.110.6.7 Wan2 Dynamic IP DHCP - 168.120.1.34 Mask - 255.255.255.0 Router IP 192.168.1.1 Computer IP 192.168.1.7 Routes: route -p add 192.168.0.0 mask 255.255.0.0 192.168.172.253 route -p add 195.110.6.0 mask 255.255.254.0 192.168.172.253 route -p add 88.135.112.0 mask 255.255.240.0 192.168.172.253 route -p add 178.219.160.0 mask 255.255.240.0 192.168.172.253 For first provider I need to provide a routes. 'Cause router does not support different routes for different WAN interfaces I put them in "Static routes". But when I try to save them I've got an error: Destination IP address can not be set in a same subnet with the WAN or LAN IP address. If I change IP's to local like 192.168.x.x router tell me: Gateway must be set in a same subnet with WAN or LAN IP address. Changing mask on WAN1 interface to 255.255.0.0 doesn't help. Any ideas? PS! Or maybe I'm must email to TP-Link support?

  I'm trying to use NtBackup to back up the C: Drive on a Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 machine and get the following error in the log file: Backup Status Operation: Backup Active backup destination: 4mm DDS Media name: "Media created 04/02/2011 at 21:56" Error: The device reported an error on a request to read data from media. Error reported: Invalid command. There may be a hardware or media problem. Please check the system event log for relevant failures. Error: C: is not a valid drive, or you do not have access. The operation did not successfully complete. I'm using a brand new SATA Quantum Dat-72 drive with a brand new tape (tried a couple of tapes). I carry out the following: Open NTBackup Select Backup Tab Tick the box next to C: Ensure Destination is 4mm DDS Media is set to New Press Start Backup Choose Replace the data on the media and press Start Backup NTBackup tries to mount the media Error Message shows: The device reported an error on a request to read data from media. Error reported: INvalid command. There may be a hardware or media problem. Please check the system event log for relevant failures.
