• Ubuntu 12.4 cursor changes

  I have a weird problem with my Ubuntu 12.4 dual screen setup (Toshiba laptop + one monitor). After a while the cursor on one screen completely changes its shape (not every time). I don't really know how to describe it because it's always something else. Sometimes I get four or five vertical lines instead of a cursor, sometimes I can only see part of the cursor, etc, sometimes weird shade appears. This only happens on one screen simultaneously. If I go to the other screen, the cursor appears to be fine but when I change screens, the cursor changes. I tried to do a screenshot but when I do, the cursor looks just fine. I'm using Unity and Gnome 3 but the problem is on both desktop environments. Nothing is wrong with my screen though because I'm also using Windows and I don't have any problems there.

• RTOS experience

  Hi, I have been working as an embedded software engineer on mostly 8 bit micro-controller firmware and desktop/mobile applications development for the past five years. My work on a WinCE project (in which I got introduced to .NET CF) was short lived. I did use core APIs for interrupt processing, peripheral communication, etc...but again, not exactly a pure RTOS environment. In order to get together more solid experience for growing more in the embedded field, I want to work more with RTOSes. Will buying an evaluation board with an RTOS and putting together a project at home be regarded as a good experience or will an online course be more useful? I am just not clear as to what will be regarded as good experience. Any suggestions or directions will greatly help me. I have a passion for the field but just a need a point in the right direction. • update-apt-xapian-index uses 100% CPU, even when Update Manager is set to not check for updates

  I have a slightly older laptop running Ubuntu 11.10. It runs fine, but frequently, when I start it up, the CPU monitor in my Gnome Panel shows 100% usage for for what can be up to five minutes or so. It seems that the offending process is update-apt-xapian-index, which, if I understand correctly, is the update manager checking for updates. I have gone into the update manager settings, and selected to never check for updates. I'll do that manually when I feel like I have the time to leave the laptop running for that. However, despite my selection, this still happens. Roughly 50% of the time or more, when I start my laptop, it runs update-apt-xapian-index. How can I get the update manager to respect my settings, or at least to get this process to stop eating my CPU cycles?

How would you classify programming skill in four or five levels from complete beginner to god-like? For sake of argument, let us consider C++. What words would you use to present your programming skills? For example who is an expert in C++ or which word has a higher impact: Expert vs. Experienced? • Creating a SOLID Visual Studio Solution

  The SOLID acronym describes five object-oriented design principles that, when followed, produce code that is cleaner and more maintainable. The last principle, the Dependency Inversion Principle, suggests that details depend upon abstractions. Unfortunately, typical project relationships in .NET applications can make this principle difficult to follow. In this article, I'll describe how one can structure a set of projects in a Visual Studio solution such that DIP can be followed, allowing for the creation of a SOLID solution. Also these were created with nib file (xib) no storyboard. Can I create my files with storyboard or do I have to continue creating files with xib?   I've mentioned in the past that Oracle has invested quite a bit in acquiring social companies to build out its Social Relationship Management suite.  The concept is to shift away from transactions and towards engagement.  Social media represents a great opportunity to engage with customers, learn what they want, and personalize the shopping experience for them. I look at SRM as the bridge between traditional CRM and CX.  If you're looking for ideas, check out Five Social Retailing Suggestions and Social Analytics and the Customer.  There are lots of ways to leverage social media to enhance the customer experience and thus drive more sales. • Lubuntu 12.04 is a non-LTS release - does this mean that LXDE isn't, either?

  Lubuntu 12.04 is not a long-term-support release. That's mostly due to a lack of manpower. But I don't use Lubuntu on my machine, I use LXDE over stock Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. So my question is: In the next five years, will there be security updates and bug fixes for LXDE-packages such as Openbox, PCmanFM and LXsession? Or does the "LTS" in 12.04 LTS only include stock Unity packages? I guess this question is just as relevant for any other DE out there.

• Wireless suddenly dropping with a Ralink RT2870

  I have a Linksys WUSB600N v1 Dual-Band Wireless-N Network Adapter Ralink RT2870 USB dongle that worked flawlessly in 11.10. Since upgrading, I can't keep a connection for more than five minutes. The wild world of Google was unable to provide a solution, and I would rather not downgrade although that remains a possibility. • Bluescreen after Ubuntu 12.10 installation, after recommended boot repair "no filesystem found" please help!

  After I tried to install Ubuntu 12.10 into my Windows 7 a black screen came up and nothing happened for over five minutes. So I force shutdown my computer and started again on the linux CD. I partitioned the Linux partitions manually and installed Ubuntu. At the next reboot I got a bluescreen from Windows three secounds after loading. I tried to repair the problem by using boot-repair. Then I got out the url: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1430803 And after the next restart he told me that he didn't found the filesystem. Because he didn't found the filesystem it was unable to repair it with the windows CD. Then I tried to repair it with TestDisk and was able to change the Windows Partition into NTFS, but I was not able to repair the windows 7 boot partition. Now I get the message that No Bootloader is found when I restart. Please help me.

• Kile missing "Settings" dialog after update to kubuntu 12.10

  After update to Kubuntu 12.10, I can no longer access configuration options in Kile from Settings-Configure kile (or whatever the menu entry was for configuration). In fact, "Settings" menu has only five entries: "Define current document as master document", "System check", "Show side bar", "Show message bar", and "Toolbars shown." I did a fresh install of Kubuntu 12.10 on one of my other computers, and same problem. I even tried adding the (unsupported) ppa:kile/stable, but the problem persists. Any ideas? I need to access settings to set PDF Latex to use "modern" compilation mode, so that I can use synctex.

• How should I track multi-valued page attributes (e.g. tags) using custom variables?

  Our pages can each have many tags, e.g 'football', 'sms', 'nsfw', etc.. wich we would like to track in google analytics. We're already tracking things like category using google analytics custom variables. We've used three of the five available slots so far. How can we track tags the same way? If we just mush them all together - e.g. 'football, sms, nsfw' then can we track the ones that are tagged 'football'? What's the right way to track multi-valued page attributes using custom variables?

• Menus and text boxes look graphically corrupted in 12.10

  If I let my computer run long enough the screen gets glitchy or graphically corrupted only in certain areas i.e. in text related boxes, menus, menu bars, scroll bars, the system monitor window, etc. It becomes difficult to read what I am typing. Its been happening quite often and I can only fix it by restarting the computer, but its only a matter of time before it happens again. Don't know what else to do, its been a thorn in my side for quite some time now and I need a fix soon because its only gets more frequent until I'm rebooting my computer five times a day.
