• Going from dev to sysadmin advice [on hold]

  I've seen the threads on here about transitions to/from sysadmin. My story is I am a dev (technology is irrelevant), but in learning that technology it required a lot of server infrastructure. In the last few years, I thus had to setup a lot of infrastructure (AD, DNS, SQL etc) to learn said technology. I've noticed that I've enjoyed doing sysadmin and got quite good at it, and find it even engrossing (e.g. I am amazed by how decievingly complicated AD is, under the hood). I'm now thinking of moving into IT infrastructure after about 4 years in various dev (.NET) roles. Any advice? My concern is that I don't have any experience with hardware load balancers and firewalls like F5 etc, which some jobs require. How could I compensate for that? Also, I'm rubbish with my hands, would this be a factor? (i.e. maintaining physical kit)? Thanks

• Is it possible to rent a virtual instance of Windows/XP/Vista/7 in the cloud on pay as you go basis?

  I am a software developer and I need to test my software on different OS all the time. I am using free VPC images from IE6 compat kit from Microsoft but they have only limited options of Windows Versions (Win XP SP3 and some restricted version of Vista). I need a service where I could rent a Virtual OS in the cloud and connect via Remote Dektop. Use for couple of hours and then discard all the stuff I have been doing there. I tried using Amazon S3 but they only have Windows Server 2003 Anyone knows of such a service that would offer different XP/Vista/7 versions ?

  I just bought a Mac Pro 1,1 from my coworkers and I'm looking to upgrade video card as the one inside is very noisy. What are my options? Basically I'm not looking to spend a lot of money, in fact i'd rather to spend as little as possible and get low end or mid range card, I'm not really playing games all that much so pretty much anything will do, I'd prefer 2xx series though. Current Mac Pro sells w/ GT120, Apple sells upgrade kit for $149 (which is okay, I just not sure if I'll be able to use this card on such an old Mac Pro)

• Memory upgrade - is the site reliable?

  Hi, I have a late-2008 unibody macbook model with 2 GB of ram. I am looking to upgrade to 4 GB of ram. I looked about a month ago at Other World Computing's 4 GB upgrade kit and I remember it being around $80. I looked today, finally getting to buy it and it went up to almost $100. I found another site, memoryupgrade.pro that calls itself "Pro memory upgrade" and it looks legitimate - it sells the memory for around $80 in its own brand. The only thing is, I haven't been able to find any reviews about it, and I'm not sure if it actually is reliable. Does anybody have any experience with this site? Does anybody have any other suggestions for buying macbook memory? I have friends who bought from OWC and were happy, should I just spend the extra $30 (including shipping) and buy from them? • HP Laserjet "maintenance interval" vs "fuser life"

  I posted a question about the Laserjet 8100DN earlier here: http://serverfault.com/questions/139043/buying-an-old-laser-printer-what-will-need-to-be-replaced and from doing some more research I have a new question: I found the "maintence interval" -- "the interval at which you should install a maintenance kit" (which is a fuser and rollers), and it is...350,000 pages. BUT, when I look at the specs for an HP 8100 fuser, it says the fuser has a life span of 150,000 pages. What gives? – Will the fuser go bad after 150 or 350? ==== BTW I hope it's ok to ask another similar question in a new thread -- I'm just following instructions from my thread on the topic at Meta.

• SP1 for MS-Windows Vista won't install because it requires SP1

  A laptop with Windows Vista (32-bit) installed (no viruses or SpyWare; the Sony Root Kit SpyWare was recently removed by MalwareBytes). It doesn't currently have Service Pack 1 installed, and although Windows Updates will download and execute it, the installation fails with an error indicating that Service Pack 1 is required. Has anyone encountered this problem and found a way to resolve it? I've tried rebooting, as well as clearing out the MS-Windows Update temporary download files (while shutting down the Windows Installer service), but the problem persists. Thanks in advance.

• Palm software that can turn the Palm IR keyboard into a Bluetooth keyboard for PC?

  I had this kooky idea this morning. I love my foldout palm keyboard, but it only speaks IR to my Palm Treo. But it also has a Bluetooth radio so I thought wouldn't it be just keen to have a program that runs on the Treo that reads from the IR the keyboard and exposes it as a Bluetooth keyboard for a PC. I realize I'm way late to the game because there's so little information about the Palm anymore. I was thinking of writing this software if it wasn't too big of a deal, but I figured I'd see if anybody knew of such a project already in existence or something like it that I could piggyback off of. Not even sure if I can get the Palm OS Developers' kit anymore....

• Is vSphere's Data Recover appliance 'production-ready'?

  I have a smallish lab environment (16 x ESX4iU1 hosts and VC4U1) that I periodically want to backup. Normally in production we snap to secondary SAN boxes then have disk-based VTL backups via NetBackup which eventually migrate to off-site removable disks but this seems like an overkill for my own kit. I've spent a bit of time with vSphere's 'Data Recovery' appliance, it was easy enough to setup and I've not really ran into any issues with it but that doesn't mean I trust it fully. Have you had any experiences with it, positive or negative that would help me decide whether to trust it or pay Symantec for more licences? Thank you in advance.

• Generating my own SQL Server SSL Certificate

  I hear it's possible to make myself a test certificate with MakeCert from Windows SDK, but the beast is 1.5 GB, which I feel reluctant to download for a half-megabyte program. I do, however, have IIS Resource kit with me, which has selfssl to generate certificate for IIS. Will that work for SQL Server? Is there a more convenient way of generating myself an SSL certificate for SQL Server use? I even tried using CREATE CERTIFICATE with TSQL within SQL Server and then have it BACKUP into a file, but with no success. I must have confused the concept of certificate fundamentally. Any advice?

• Where can I find ready to use windows scripts that used robocopy?

  We are installing the Windows Resource Kit, and that installs RoboCopy. We want to have access to a few windows scripts that uses RoboCopy so we can start from those to build something else. Any ideas on where I can find a few samples? NOTE 1: A bit of information. Every time we try to copy D drive to E drive (new drive) we get an error that says: ERROR 32 (0x000000020) Copying File d:\pagefile.sys The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. Waiting 30 seconds. Just to help figure it out.

• Is there a way to automatically disconnect a notebook from the eletrical power-supply?

  I know this looks like weird and useless, but let me explain... I'm running Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK) to make some tests on Windows 8 Preview. One of it's assessment is the "Battery Run Down Test", which tests battery consumption with some procesor load. I'm trying to "automate" in some way this test, I mean, I wish to execute it without any human intervention (such as manually disconecting the eletric power source to leave my notebook running only from batteries to run this assessment). So, there is some ACPI API, Windows API or even an easy bat shell/VBScript/Powershell command to do this? Does someone already made something like? PS: I'm asking this because I couldn't found any answer, but maybe someone here would have any tip...

• Apache Subversion and Sudo - Why can't I resolve this hostname?

  Okay, I made a mistake and I'll be the first to admit I'm new at this setup. I built a bare bones kit, installed Ubuntu on it, and attempted to set up a source control server for a project some friend and I were going to work on. Unfortunately, I screwed up. I followed a dodgy tutorial from 2005 and when it didn't work, started mixing and matching trying to get to the source of my problem. So now I sit before you, a broken and miserable man. Desperate to escape this annoying echo of 'Unable to resolve host computer.repositoryname.com', I uninstalled apache and subversion. That did not fix it. Next I tried to edit my /etc/hosts, going so far as to remove the reference to '127.0.1.1 computername'. Still I'm plagued. I know I messed up, is there any way to track down this wayward bug?

• Is an Adnroid-based Phone a Suitable MP3 Player for Music Streamed over the Internet?

  I am considering getting an HTC phone running Android from Verizon Wireless when I next upgrade my phone. I also have an online account with a music vendor, where I have rights to listen to my collection, but not download the MP3s. Further, I have an unlimited data plan and Wi-Fi, so I have full access to bandwidth volume without any concerns. I am especially interested in mounting my phone in a car kit, and streaming my online music to my car's sound system while driving. If you are experienced in this scenario, or have tried this scenario - Is is reasonable to expect my HTC Android phone to provide me with streaming music via my cell data plan anywhere I get cell service?

• Thermal risks to other components when watercooling CPU

  I recently ordered all the components for a new desktop system to replace my old, dying computer. I wanted to have a really quiet desktop, so I got a case rated for being quiet and opted to try a closed-system CPU water cooling kit (Antec Kuhler H2O 620) that was on sale for a very good price over the Thanksgiving weekend. Most of my components are still in transit, but I became somewhat worried when a friend mentioned that abandoning air cooling units can result in heat buildup inside the case due to heat generated by the video card and other components such as RAM, the northbridge, MOSFETs and voltage regulators radiating heat that the CPU fan would normally at least keep circulating around so it doesn't build up in localized areas. Is this a realistic problem? What other precautions should I take to remove heat from other components? Adding more case fans seems like it would get really noisy. Are there quiet alternatives?

  Hi, Is it possible to split a large file into smaller files on Windows 2003 using a tool provided/supported/sanctioned by Microsoft? I see that there are a lot of freeware tools (various zip tools) for this task, but I need to move files off of a production server, thus would like to avoid tools I don't know if I can trust. I would much prefer some tool included in the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools or something along those lines. Does such a tool exist? Thank you.

• Why do most routers not include local DNS?

  I need to change my firewall/router, and I'd prefer something with built-in DNS to resolve queries on the local subnets. I've got a mixed Linux/Windows system, often with only one computer turned on, and I frequently have problems resolving local names. I don't want to keep a Linux box permanently on just for DNS, and I'd prefer to have DNS in my router appliance, which is always on. I search Google for this occasionally but never find anything. You always get the obvious answers - it's not possible, put everything in /etc/hosts, NetBIOS, dedicated box, etc. So what am I missing? Why don't "cheap" routers let you do this? I'm pretty sure that Cisco kit does this. Almost all cheap routers will let you do MAC address reservation, to let them assign static IP addresses for DHCP. So why can't they simply do DNS as well for everything on the local subnets, just passing through remote domains to the ISP?

  considering this rig : i7 2600K 8GB RAM Corsair Vengeance kit 10-9-10-27 @1866 HD 4870 PSU Corsair AX 1200 I recently upgraded to a HD 6970 and I am getting the following - not so nice screens : http://imageshack.us/g/213/1000142z.jpg/ Had anyone any similar trouble at all? I am thinking that the card is DOA but could it also be the Mobo? Since I am in the BIOS I can't think how the mobo could be the problem. HD 4870 works perfect btw regardless of what I throw at it. • Configuring IIS site to use HTTPS

  I am working on a REST API which I have currently deployed on a Win XP Professional SP2 development machine running IIS 5.1. The site is currently being hosted on port 81 and being accessed via HTTP. I would now like to configure the site to stop using HTTP and use HTTPS only. I have developed a self-signed certificate using the SelfSSL.exe tool from the 6.0 Resource Kit Tools and set the Common Name to be the IP of my server (as it's a local development machine it has no domain name). I have also already configured the site to use SSL using the How To Set Up an HTTPS Service in IIS tutorial as my guide. However, whenever I try to access a resource in the API via HTTPS I get a 404. Any ideas?

• How to diagnose RAM?

  I have a java process that is aborted after a while with SIGSEGV. It started to happen after I upgraded the server with more RAM. Having tested on different JVMs I suspect it might be a hardware problem. But no problem was detected by memtest86. So, what else can I do to detect the source of the problem is? Should I take the RAM modules one by one to detect the faulty module? The server is running on 64bit OpenSuse11.3. The memory is not an ECC one it seems.   I have problem with my pc. Random reboots with post "hyper transport sync flood" error. It happens completely random. Most times i watch movie, some times when i play a game, even when i browse internet. My spec are as follow: MB ASUS M4A78-E CPU Phenom II 940 Sapphire Radeon hd4850 Vapor-X RAM OCZ DDR2 PC2-8500 kit 2x2GB PSU CM Real Power M520W CASE CM Centurion 590 Temps of MB, CPU and 4850 are in normal range. MB is hooter, around 60-70°C under load, Radeon 60-65°C under load (playing game for couple hours). CPU dos not past 50-55°C. So i think its not a cooling problem, CM case is pretty good, and have a lots of fans. I try with this memmory: TWIN2X4096-6400C5DHX same problem.

  Recently I flashed the BIOS of my Asus Rampage III Extreme. But I lost the settings and now only 16GB out of 24GB of DRAM in the system is recognized. Does anyone has the correct DRAM setting for: 2 kits of cmz12gx3m3a1600c9 (Corsair Vengenance 12GB kit) on Asus Rampage III Extreme? Current I have 9-9-9-24 1N at 1.5v, but only 16GB is showing. I even tried to up the voltage to 1.65v, still no joy. Thank you in advance!

• Odd SVN Checkout failures occur frequenctly on VMWare virtual machines

  We've recently been experiencing seemingly random SVN checkout failures on our Hudson build system. Google search has failed me; I'm hoping the super user community can help me out :-) We are occasionally receiving the following SVN error when our Hudson build jobs checkout source via the Hudson Subversion plug-in (which uses svn kit): ERROR: Failed to check out http://server/svnroot/trunk org.tmatesoft.svn.core.SVNException: svn: Processing REPORT request response failed: XML document structures must start and end within the same entity. (/svnroot/!svn/vcc/default) svn: REPORT request failed on '/svnroot/!svn/vcc/default' This issue seems to only occur when checking out from our Virtual Machines (Windows XP, Fedora 9, Fedora 12) using Hudson's SVN Plug-in. Systems that use the traditional SVN client seem to work. SVN Server version: 1.6.6 Hudson version: 1.377 Hudson SVN Plugin Version: 1.17 Has anyone dealt with this issue, or have any suggestions? • Hardware for Capturing Packets

  One of my clients is a small school district in Texas. Like any school, they often have problems with network'd peripherals such as printers, et al. It would be nice to be able to simply "listen" to what the printer and PC are saying to each other (or not saying more importantly)... The problem is that I can't find old-style "hubs" anymore, and even if I could, it's not a long-term solution. All of the devices that I have found to replicate the purpose of a simple hub are either $100+ or are difficult to throw into a networking tool kit (aka my backpack)... Now that hubs are dead, what's the new low-cost standard for simple packet capture in the networking world?

• How can I get the Android SDK working with Eclipse in Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit?

  I would like to tinker with the Android software development kit, and I have found out that it only support 32-bit versions of the Java Platform and Eclipse. I installed the ia32 Sun Java runtime environment and the 32-bit version of Eclipse. I also used the update-alternatives program to make a java 32-bit preference. Both of these seem to run fine. I also installed the Eclipse android plugins, but my problem lies in the SDK downloaded from Google. When I go to Eclipse preferences and try to tell it about my Android SDK location, there are no SDK targets listed. Has anyone else gotten this running on Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit? Thanks.
