• In Visio 2010, how can I create a mandatory, non-identifying relationship between two database tables

  I'm working in MS Visio 2010. This is the relevant part of my ERD: The relationship between Event and Adventure is correct: there's a foreign key from Event to Adventure, and that FK is part of Event's primary key. However, what I can't figure out is how to make the relationship line from Adventure to AccomodationType be the same, without making that relationship part of the PK of adventure. When I look at the 'Miscellaneous' properties of that relationship line, I want it to be: Cardinality: Zero or more Relationship type: Non-identifying Child has parent: Not optional (mandatory) But the checkbox for the third property is greyed out, and toggles between True/False as I make the relationship Non-identifying/Identifying. The only way I could figure out was to disconnect the two columns, from the 'Definition' tab, which then un-grey's the 'Optional' checkbox, but then I lose the foreign key property on the accomType column, and while the relationship symbols are correct, the line remains dotted. Any ideas, anyone?

• Weekend reading: Microsoft/Oracle and SkyDrive based code-editor

  A couple of news item caught my eye this weekend that I think are worthy of comment. Microsoft/Oracle partnership to be announced tomorrow (24/06/2013) According to many news site Microsoft and Oracle are about to announce a partnership (Oracle set for major Microsoft, Salesforce, Netsuite partnerships) and they all seem to be assuming that it will be something to do with “the cloud”. I wouldn’t disagree with that assessment, Microsoft are heavily pushing Azure and Oracle seem (to me anyway) to be rather lagging behind in the cloud game. More specifically folks seem to be assuming that Oracle’s forthcoming 12c database release will be offered on Azure. I did a bit of reading about Oracle 12c and one of its key pillars appears to be that it supports multi-tenant topologies and multi-tenancy is a common usage scenario for databases in the cloud. I’m left wondering then, if Microsoft are willing to push a rival’s multi-tenant solution what is happening to its own cloud-based multi-tenant offering – SQL Azure Federations. We haven’t heard anything about federations for what now seems to be a long time and moreover the main Program Manager behind the technology, Cihan Biyikoglu, recently left Microsoft to join Twitter. Furthermore, a Principle Architect for SQL Server, Conor Cunningham, recently presented the opening keynote at SQLBits 11 where he talked about multi-tenant solutions on SQL Azure and not once did he mention federations. All in all I don’t have a warm fuzzy feeling about the future of SQL Azure Federations so I hope that that question gets asked at some point following the Microsoft/Oracle announcement. Text Editor on SkyDrive with coding-specific features Liveside.net got a bit of a scoop this weekend with the news (Exclusive: SkyDrive.com to get web-based text file editing features) that Microsoft’s consumer-facing file storage service is going to get a new feature – a web-based code editor. Here’s Liveside’s screenshot: I’ve long had a passing interest in online code editors, indeed back in December 2009 I wondered out loud on this blog site: I started to wonder when the development tools that we use would also become cloud-based. After all, if we’re using cloud-based services does it not make sense to have cloud-based tools that work with them? I think it does. Project Houston Since then the world has moved on. Cloud 9 IDE (https://c9.io/) have blazed a trail in the fledgling world of online code editors and I have been wondering when Microsoft were going to start playing catch-up. I had no doubt that an online code editor was in Microsoft’s future; its an obvious future direction, why would I want to have to download and install a bloated text editor (which, arguably, is exactly what Visual Studio amounts to) and have to continually update it when I can simply open a web browser and have ready access to all of my code from wherever I am. There are signs that Microsoft is already making moves in this direction, after all the URL for their new offering Team Foundation Service doesn’t mention TFS at all – my own personalised URL for Team Foundation Service is http://jamiet.visualstudio.com – using “Visual Studio” as the domain name for a service that isn’t strictly speaking part of Visual Studio leads me to think that there’s a much bigger play here and that one day http://visualstudio.com will house an online code editor. With that in mind then I find Liveside’s revelation rather intriguing, why would a code editing tool show up in Skydrive? Perhaps SkyDrive is going to get integrated more tightly into TFS, I’m very interested to see where this goes. The larger question playing on my mind though is whether an online code editor from Microsoft will support SQL Server developers. I have opined before (see The SQL developer gap) about the shoddy treatment that SQL Server developers have to experience from Microsoft and I haven’t seen any change in Microsoft’s attitude in the three and a half years since I wrote that post. I’m constantly bewildered by the lack of investment in SQL Server developer productivity compared to the riches that are lavished upon our appdev brethren. When you consider that SQL Server is Microsoft’s third biggest revenue stream it is, frankly, rather insulting. SSDT was a step in the right direction but the hushed noises I hear coming out of Microsoft of late in regard to SSDT don’t bode fantastically well for its future. So, will an online code editor from Microsoft support T-SQL development? I have to assume not given the paucity of investment on us lowly SQL Server developers over the last few years, but I live in hope! Your thoughts in the comments section please. • Apache SSO through Kerberos using Machine Account

  I'm attempting to get Apache on Ubuntu 12.04 to authenticate users via Kerberos SSO to a Windows 2008 Active Directory server. Here are a few things that make my situation different: I don't have administrative access to the Windows Server (nor will I ever have access). I also cannot have any changes to the server made on my behalf. I've joined Ubuntu server to the Active Directory using PBIS open. Users can log into the Ubuntu server using their AD credentials. kinit also works fine for each user. Since I can't change AD (except for adding new machines and SPNs), I cannot add a service account for Apache on Ubuntu. Since I can't add I service account, I have to use the machine keytab (/etc/krb5.keytab), or at least use the machine password in another keytab. Right now I'm using the machine keytab and giving Apache readonly access (bad idea, I know). I've already added the SPN using net ads keytab add HTTP -U Since I'm using Ubuntu 12.04, the only encoding types that get added during "net ads keytab add" are arcfour-hmac, des-cbc-crc, and des-cbc-md5. PBIS adds the AES encoding types to the host and cifs principals when it joins the domain, but I have yet to get "net ads keytab add" to do this. ktpass and setspn are out of the question because of #1 above. I've configured (for Kerberos SSO) and tested both IE 8 Firefox. • DIVIDE vs division operator in #dax

  Alberto Ferrari wrote an interesting article about DIVIDE performance in DAX. This new function has been introduced in SQL Server Analysis Services 2012 SP1, so it is available also in Excel 2013 (which still doesn’t have other features/fixes introduced by following Cumulative Updates…). The idea that instead of writing: IF ( Sales[Quantity] <> 0, Sales[Amount] / Sales[Quantity], BLANK () ) you can write: DIVIDE ( Sales[Amount], Sales[Quantity] ) There is a third optional argument in DIVIDE that defines the result in case the denominator (second argument) is zero, and by default its value is BLANK, so I omitted the third argument in my example. Using DIVIDE is very important, especially when you use a measure in MDX (for example in an Excel PivotTable) because it raise the chance that the non empty evaluation for the result is evaluated in bulk mode instead of cell-by-cell. However, from a DAX point of view, you might find it’s better to use the standard division operator removing the IF statement. I suggest you to read Alberto’s article, because you will find that an expression applying a filter using FILTER is faster than using CALCULATE, which is against any rule of thumb you might have read until now! Again, this is not always true, and depends on many conditions – trying to simplify, we might say that for a simple calculation, the query plan generated by FILTER could be more efficient – but, as usual, it depends, and 90% of the times using FILTER instead of CALCULATE produces slower performance. Do not take anything for granted, and always check the query plan when performance are your first issue!

  We have two interconnected Exchange organizations: Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2013. When users ask for read receipt in Outlook these receipts are delivered correctly within each organization. However when Exchange 2003 users send messages to Exchange 2013 users the read receipts are delivered to the Exchange 2013 recipients and instead of the message senders. We analyzed the message content at the recipient side and it looks like the message arrives with an incorrect ReadReceiptEntryID field. The field must contain the sender's address but it contains the recipient address instead. What can be the cause of the issue?

There are a lot of things in it I don't know how to do, such as: Having header rows that "stick" to the top even when you scroll down Slider on the first page changes where the chart pulls its data from Functions seem to be referring to named ranges in tables, like =SUM([nov]). Where do those names come from? Clicking "back to overview" on the "Budget" page returns you to the "Dashboard" page The number under "starting balance" of the top right corner of "Budget" changes when you change cell C5 On "Budget", each cell in the first column of each table has a drop-down menu for text, which seems to come from the "Setup" page The background isn't just plain white, but when I try to format paint it onto a new sheet, nothing happens If you know how any of these effects are achieved, I'm definitely curious. But I guess the main point of my question is where I can go to answer these questions for myself. Are templates explained anywhere?

• Don't break header/footer when making page landscape format

  I have a document with a footer with page numbering and a header with some centered text. Long story short: I flipped one page to landscape format. Long story long: I made a forced page break to get a blank page. I then highlighted this page (that is, I highlighted the empty line on this page) and went to the page proporties menu window, clicked on the landscape format button, and chose to apply this setting for the highlighted text only. The result: All that is of course no big deal, and my page is flipped the 90 degrees as wished - but my header and footer break! They disappear from this page... and actually also from the next page (which is still upright portrait format), which is weird. And then the header and footer is back on the following pages again, though the page numbering restarts from 1. On this screenshot you can see that the previous and the following pages have headers and footers, but not the flipped one and not the page following the flipped one. What just happened here? How can I make the page numbering continue without restarting first of all, and then, how can I keep the header and footer on at least the upright page, that suddenly doesn't have them?

  I have a spreadsheet where there is one table with the headings: Coordinate, Lat, Long Another with headings Triangle, Coordinate 1, Coordinate 2, Coordinate 3, Area What this is for, is taking the triangles formed by the specified three coordinates' area based off of Girard's theorem, as they are all spherical triangles. I need to take the specific latitude and longitude values from the first table based on the coordinate numbers underneath the three coordinate headings in the second table. I hope this makes sense. • Two related cells: give a value in one, calculate the other, and vice versa?

  How can I have a cell that uses the literal value written into it, or calculates its value when no literal value was given? For example: I have two columns: column B with a price including VAT, and column C with a price without VAT. If I put a price with VAT in B2, then I want cell C2 to calculate the price without VAT based on B2. But if I put a price without VAT in C2, then I want cell B2 to calculate the price with VAT from C2. I want to give this spreadsheet to my mother, who barely understands Excel. She just has to enter the values that she knows, and the worksheet should derive the other values from that.

• Excel Extending Equations

  So I have an excel table that is multiply 1 value against several other values. It looks like this: So I want the equations inside cells C14 to F14 to be B14*C5, B14*C6, B14*C7, B14*C8 respectively. So I can obviously do that manually but I want to learn the faster way. So I know I should use absolute reference for B14, so I can input =$B$14*C5 for cell C14. But then when I do the CTRL extend method where you put the cursor on the bottom right corner of the cell and hold CTRL while you extend the cells. The problem is since I am extending the equation in B14 horizontally to F14, it is incrementing the equation horizontally. So the equation in D14 becomes =$B$14*D5 instead of =$B$14*C6. So how exactly do I increment the equation downwards while I extend the equation horizontally?

• How do I copy hyperlink only (and not text) to another cell?

  I have a spreadsheet where column A displays names. There are a few hundred names and each has a different hyperlink (which links to that person's web page). I want to transfer those hyperlinks across to a different column which has different text in and no hyperlinks. Not every cell in column A has a hyperlink. There are groups of cells merged together, so A2:A7 has one link, A8:A13 the next, A9:10 the next (i.e. number of cells merged is not uniform). e.g. where A2:A7 reads "Bob" and links to www.bob.com, I want I2:I7, which reads, "Smith," and does not link to anything, to link to www.bob.com. I want to do this repeatedly, copying links from A2:A579 into I2:I579. The information is copied from a table within a web page, and that is where the hyperlinks come from.

• Excel: How do I copy hyperlink address from one column of text to another column with different text?

  I have a spreadsheet where column A displays names in a certain format. There are 200-odd names and each has a different hyperlink (which links to that person's web page). I want to reformat the name order so it is "Surname, Name" rather than "Name Surname" and retain the hyperlink in the newly formatted column. I have achieved "Surname, Name" easily by splitting the names into two columns (using LEFT and RIGHT formulae) - forename and surname - then I have a new column with a formula to return "Surname, Name." However, the hyperlinks are not in that new column and I need them. I don't want to do this manually, for obvious reasons. I cannot find a way of copying just hyperlinks from column A without copying the text from column A. So, effectively, what I need is some sort of macro to take, for example, the hyperlink from A2 and copy it to H2, with H2 still retaining the updated ordering of name. I don't have the knowledge to write this myself, so would appreciate solutions.

The default (database) sorting is earliest to latest: When I click the triangle next to 'Row Labels' and select "Sort A to Z", I get alphabetically sorted times: How can I get the times to sort by time? Changing the number format from "General" to "Time" does nothing. The times aren't stored as text either - the data type of the column in the SSAS model is Auto (Date)

This gave me the opportunity to test real world application at various clients using the Microsoft Load Test Service and provide real world feedback to the Microsoft product team. One of the most recent systems I tested using the Load Test Service has been an insurance quote generation engine. This insurance quote generation engine is,   hosted in Windows Azure expected to get quote requests from across the globe expected to handle 5 Million quote requests in a day (not clear how this load will be distributed across the day) There was no way, I could simulate such kind of load from on premise without standing up additional hardware. But Microsoft’s Cloud based Load Test service allowed me to test my key performance testing scenarios, i.e. Simulate expected Load, Endurance Testing, Threshold Testing and Testing for Latency. Simulating expected load: approach to devising a load pattern My approach to devising a load test pattern has been to run the test scenario with 1 user to figure out the response time. Then work out how many users are required to reach the target load. So, for example, to invoke 1 quote from the quote engine software takes 0.5 seconds. Now if you do the math,   1 quote request by 1 user = 0.5 seconds   quotes generated by 1 user in 24 hour = 1 * (((2 * 60) * 60) * 24) = 172,800   quotes generated by 30 users in 24 hours = 172,800 * 30 =  5,184,000 This was a very simple example, if your application requires more concurrent users to test scenario’s such as caching, etc then you can devise your own load pattern, some examples of load test patterns can be found here.  Endurance Testing To test for endurance, I loaded the quote generation engine with an expected fixed user load and ran the test for very long duration such as over 48 hours and observed the affect of the long running test on the Azure infrastructure. Currently Microsoft Load Test service does not support metrics from the machine under test. I used Azure diagnostics to begin with, but later started using Cerebrata Azure Diagnostics Manager to capture the metrics of the machine under test. Threshold Testing To figure out how much user load the application could cope with before falling on its belly, I opted to step load the quote generation engine by incrementing user load with different variations of incremental user load per minute till the application crashed out and forced an IIS reset. Testing for Latency Currently the Microsoft Load Test service does not support generating geographically distributed load, I however, deployed the insurance quote generation engine in different Azure data centres and ran the same set of performance tests to measure for latency. Because I could compare load test results from different runs by exporting the results to excel (this feature is provided out of the box right from Visual Studio 2010) I could see the different in response times. • How can I modify the "Picture Styles" shortcut gallery in Microsoft Office (Word and Powerpoint, specifically)?

  The Microsoft Office Ribbon has a convenient gallery of styles to apply to pictures, shown here. It functions much like the Quick Styles gallery in Word for quickly applying formatting to text. But whereas one can create a new text style and add it to the Quick Styles gallery, I haven't been able to find a way to do the same with the Picture Styles gallery. The default styles aren't what I need, and the styles I do need involve changing multiple settings, so a shortcut would be nice. Am I stuck just using the copy-paste format options?
