• Is this error caused by a 64-bit library being accessed by a Java program running in a 32-bit JVM?

  I'm trying to create a simple Java app that uses JNI to call some native functions. I've followed the examples in the JNI Programming Guide and can't seem to get them to work. I have the following Hello World program, written in Java: class HelloWorld { private native void print(); public static void main(String [] args) { new HelloWorld().print(); } static { System.load("/home/mike/Desktop/libHelloWorld.so"); } } I compile it using javac HelloWorld.java, just like normal. Then I run javah -jni HelloWorld, and finally the following: gcc34 -shared -fpic -o libHelloWorld.so -I/<path to JDK>/include -I/<path to JDK>/include/linux HelloWorld.c gcc34 is the name of the GCC program on my machine here at work (I don't control that) and I obviously place the real path to the JDK in that command. When I run my program, using the standard java HelloWorld, I get an error saying the following: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /home/mike/Desktop/libHelloWorld.so: /home/mike/Desktop/libHelloWorld.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64 (Possible causes: architecture word width mismatch) at java.lang.ClassLoader$NativeLibrary.load(Native Method) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadLibrary0(ClassLoader.java:1778) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadLibrary(ClassLoader.java:1674) at java.lang.Runtime.load0(Runtime.java:770) at java.lang.System.load(System.java:1003) at HelloWorld.<clinit>(HelloWorld.java:8) Could not find the main class: HelloWorld. Program will exit. I know I'm running a 32-bit JVM (and unfortunately, as of right now, I'm not allowed to get a 64-bit JVM). I tried telling GCC to compile in 32-bit mode using the "-m32" option, but we don't have (and again, can't get) what we need for that. Does this sound like a 32/64-bit conflict or something else?

• How to tell if Microsoft Works is 32 or 64 bit? Please Help!

  Hi, I am trying to convert one of our apps to run on Win7 64 bit from XP 32 bit. One of the things that it uses is Excel to import files. It's a little complicated since it was using Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0 (Excel). I found Office 14 (2010) has a 64bit version I can download. I downloaded Office 2010 Beta but it didn't seem to install Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.14.0. I found that I could download 2010 Office System Driver Beta: Data Connectivity Components which has the ACE.OLEDB.14 in it but when I try to install it, the installed tells me "You cannot install the 64-bit version of Access Database engine for Microsoft Office 2010 because you currently have 32-bit Office products installed". How do I determine what 32bit office products this is reffering to? My Dell came with Microsoft Works installed. I don't know if this is 32 or 64 bit. Is there anyway to tell? I don't want to uninstall this if it's not the problem and I'm not sure what else might be the problem. Any help would be appreciated! thanks, Bill

• MySQL-python 1.2.3 and OS X 10.5: 64- or 32-bit?

  I've been happily using Django and MySQL in development on an existing machine running OS X 10.4 Tiger, and have set up a similar environment in 10.5 Leopard on a new 64-bit MacBook, with a working MySQL and Python 2.6.4. However, now I want them to communicate, easy_install MySQL-python gave ld warnings that the file is not of the required architecture, which led me to test my Python 2.4.6 install (from the Mac OS X disc image): >>> import sys >>> sys.maxint 2147483647 Ah. So my Python install appears to be 32-bit and (I think?) won't install MySQL-python for my 64-bit MySQL. There are lots of hacks out there for MySQL-python on OS X (mostly 1.2.2), but - after hours of reading - I'm pretty sure they won't fix this architecture mismatch. So I'm stuck because I can't decide whether to: give up, remove the 64-bit MySQL install (thorough methods, please?) and use the 32-bit MySQL disc image instead; re-install Python in 64-bit mode from the tarball, --with-universal archs-64-bit and --enable-universalsdk= as detailed in Python.org's 2.6 news. So my questions for anyone who has encountered this issue are: Is installing 64-bit Python on OS X 10.5 worth bothering with? If so, (naive, lazy question!) how are the two required arguments combined? If I just skip along in 32-bit (as on my working setup) what am I missing? I'm after a hassle-free install that's easy to reproduce on other machines (possible student use) so I'd really welcome your opinions, please!

• Making a 64 bit shared library that dynamically links to a 32 bit library on Mac OS X Snow Leopard

  Update: After some more reading I see that this problem is totally general, you can't mix architectures in the same process, so 64 bit Java cannot dlopen() a 32 bit library like FMOD. Is there any possible workaround for this, keeping in mind I'm writing my own C interface to the FMOD library? I need to make a 64-bit dylib on Max OS X because Java Native Access only likes 64-bit libraries on 64-bit machines. The problem is, my C source code dynamically includes FMOD which on Mac only provides 32-bit dylibs. • 32-bit JVM on 64-bit Windows crashes on launch with -Xmx1300m and plenty of free memory

  I'm struggling with Java heap space settings. The default Java on Windows is the 32-bit client regardless of OS version (that's what Oracle recommends to all users). It appears to set max heap size to 256 MB by default, and that is too little for me. I use a custom launcher to start the application. I would like it to use more memory on computers with plenty RAM, and default to -Xmx512m on those with less RAM. As far as I'm aware, the only way is the static -Xmx setting (that has to be set on launch). I have a user who has 8 GB RAM, 64-bit Windows and 32-bit Java 7. Maximum memory visible to the JVM is 4G (as returned by querying OperatingSystemMXBean). I understand why, no issue. For some reason my application is unable to start for this user with -Xmx1300m, even though he has 2.3G free memory. He closed some applications (having 5G free memory), and still it would not launch. The error reported to me was: error occured during init of vm could not reserve enough space for object heap What's going on? Could it be that the 32-bit JVM is only able to address the "first" 4G of memory and has to have a 1300M block available within those first 4 gigabytes? How can I solve this problem, except for asking everyone to install 64-bit Java (what is unlikely to be acceptable)?

• Not enough free disk space

  I'm new to Ubuntu and I'm getting an error in software updater. When I try and do my daily updates, it says: The upgrade needs a total of 25.3 M free space on disk /boot. Please free at least an additional 25.3 M of disk space on /boot. Empty your trash and remove temporary packages of former installations using sudo apt-get clean. I tried typing in sudo apt-get clean into the terminal but I still get the message. All of the pages I read seem to be for experianced Ubuntuers. Any help would be appreciated. I'm running Ubuntu 12.10. I want to upgrade to 13.04 but understand I have to finish these first. • Kubuntu 12.04 - Touchpad and keyboard stopped working at random

  As in the title, I've got this problem with my Kubuntu 12.04. At first I've thought that the whole system was hung, but it happened again 5 minutes ago and, while the keyboard and the touchpad stopped working, the music was still playing, so I guess that's just an "input" problem, because the system was still working! Any solution? Is there some data that you need to know about my setup? I used the official MySQL package for Debian at that time. Since then I have been happily making use of it. Now I need to use a MySQL function that is only available in MySQL 5.1.20 and higher. Therefore I would like to upgrade. I'm not that confident in messing with something I need every day so I wanted to check with you what the best upgrade path would be?   I got this error after installing Meld on a new Karmic installation: ~$ meld No module named pygtk Meld requires pygtk 2.8.0 or higher. I installed the latest version of python-gtk with aptitude but I'm not sure what version is actually installed. My python version is 2.6. This is weird because I have another machine that runs Karmic and Meld without a problem. The only difference between the two machines is the one with the error is a 64-bit machine running a 32-bit installation of Karmic. Could that be the problem?

• Ubuntu 9.10 x64 has no sound, while Ubuntu 9.04 32 bit does.

  I installed Ubuntu 9.10 x64 recently. Up until now I've been on 32 bit Ubuntu. For the first time since installing it, I went and tried to play a Youtube video. There was no sound. So a quick test to the system reveals that nothing will play sound (And I've tried turning the volume too full, as some have said output is quite quiet, but there is no sound at all). Further research shows that in sound preferences, the only output device listed was Dummy Output. Why would it work in 9.04 x86 and not 9.10 x64? While booting up, and occasionally with the sound preferences dialog open, I get a loud click (even though it isn't recognising my sound card). It's a Dell Studio 17 laptop. I'm not sure what the exact model of sound card is.

• Can a 32-bit RHEL4 userland work with a 64-bit kernel?

  Is there a way to change an i386 RHEL4 machine to run an amd64 kernel, but ensure that it still builds software into same i386 binaries? On Debian this seems quite straightforward: just install an amd64 kernel (worst case, build one like this guy: http://www.debian-administration.org/users/jonesy/weblog/1) and prefix everything with "linux32". Then everything that considers uname -m will be unchanged, I just need to handle the few cases that consider uname -r. What is the Red Hat equivalent? Is the only way a full 64-bit installation on another disk and then chrooting back to the 32-bit system before anyone builds anything? (Even the best examples of that seem to be Debian-based.) Background: We make a large system that runs on (a variant of) i386 RHEL4. However, some of the larger RHEL build machines now have enough RAM that they might benefit from going 64-bit (for the kernel and maybe some of the bigger build steps). Our build system doesn't support cross-compilation.

  The other day I used apt-get install python-pyexiv2 on my ubuntu server, but it seems to have given me an old version. It's not compatible with the code I wrote in my local development environment so I'd like to update it. I downloaded the latest tar.gz from the website, extracted it and ran scons as per the readme. • Web & SQL Hosting 32 vs. 16 GB of ram

My question is I can pay more to upgrade to 32GB of RAM, but it seems overkill for my website right now, in fact, 16GB seems a little overkill. However, I run a lot of pretty intense full text searches for my site. I'm wondering if SQL Server would benefit, or could it be configured to use the 32 GB of RAM if I purchase the additional to help speed things up? I am assuming that most of my latency is caused by disk I/O and that for the extra money spent on RAM, I might not see any improvement in overall speed?

  Our USB mouse was stolen and a PS/2 OK_520 Mouse that works OK on my Medion PC, running Windows 7 32-bit, if plugged in before booting, is not recognised by Windows 7 64-bit on a Dell INSPIRONone_19T with a 19" Touch Screen. (It is a communal computer available to all residents.) A USB mouse works OK and the Update Driver option reports: 'driver is up to date'. Without the USB Mouse, Device Manager/Mice shows only the Touch Screen as a Mouse. The Add New Hardware option searches but shows nothing and the Troubleshooter says ' device possibly not recognised, alterations made to system, try again.' but it is still not recognised after repeated re-boots. The BIOS does not seem to have any option to enable a PS/2 Mouse. The Mouse is very old so maybe it is not 64-bit compatible, or there is no 64-bit driver for one, but how to get one if the device is not recognised?

• Why Windows Media Center (Vista 32-bit) unable to record TV Series?

  I can record individual shows just fine, but trying to setup the recording of a Series throws an error (something like, "unable to schedule, try restarting Media Center", pops up in the bottom right of the screen). Trying to access the "Other Showings" menu causes Media Center to crash ("check for a solution online" dialog comes up). The machine is a fresh reinstall of 32-bit Windows Vista from the HP recovery CDs, plus all Microsoft updates and service packs. Hardware: HP s3220n, AMD X2 5000+, 2GB RAM, 300GB free space on disk. Media Center came bundled. The "Media Center update for Vista" failed to install (it says, not appropriate for my computer). Any ideas? Thanks

  I need to reinstall Windows on a laptop. I have the product key (its on the laptop), and I know it is Windows 7 Home Premium. I need a way to determine if 64-bit or 32-bit Windows is installed, so that I can download the correct one from Microsoft. The computer is messed up so I do not have access to Windows to check it with systeminfo. I took out the hard drive and hooked it to another computer, but when I run systeminfo it just gives information for the host computer, I did not see a way to change this.

  I've got some drivers which are basically LibUSB-Win32 with a new .inf file do describe product/vendor ids and strings which describe my hardware. This works fine for 32 bit windows, but 64 bit versions have problems; namely that Microsoft in their wisdom require all drivers to be digitally signed. So my questions are thus: Is there a version of the LibUSB-Win32 drivers which are already signed I could use? If there aren't already some signed ones I can canibalise, what exactly do I have to do to get my drivers signed. Do I need to get 64 and 32 bit versions signed separately and will this cost more? Is this a free alternative to getting them signed? Are there any other options I should consider besides requiring that my customers boot into test mode each time they start their machines (not an option I'd consider).
