Open source gravatar-like implementations?

I'm already using gravatar icons for the users of my web service. However, I'm finding several problems with this approach: Only a small percentage of the users take the time to set up a gravatar profile. My users are not tech-savvy, but would be likely to add a dedicated photo to my site. Users of my service are encouraged to use images that depict them in proper uniform for the industry my service relates to. They wouldn't want that same picture to be used for personal purposes throughout the internet. They would not take the time or effort to manage a separate email address and gravatar account just to have an "in-uniform" profile photo for my service. Before I implement my own profile image feature, I was wondering if there are any open-source solutions that I could leverage with similar features to gravatar. Specifically: The ability to display any size thumbnail (up to 512px would be fine) Takes care of caching different sized thumbnails Has support for something like identicons, preferably pluggable with different style algorithms (monsters, etc.), even better if I can customize these Ability to fall-back to gravatar if no photo found Does anything like this exist? I haven't found it yet if it does.

Getting Recognition for Open-Source Computer Language Projects

I like language a lot, so I write a lot of language-based solutions for programming, automation, and data definition. I'm very much a believer in open-source software, so lately I've started to push these projects to Sourceforge when I start them. I feel that these tools could be quite valuable in the right hands, and that they fill niches that otherwise go unfilled. The trouble, for me, is gaining recognition. No matter how useful the software I write, after a certain point I can no longer come up with anything to add or improve. Basically no one but me uses it, so it's not being attacked from enough angles to discover any new weaknesses. I cannot work on a project that doesn't have anything to do, but I won't have anything to do unless I gain recognition by working on it! This is greatly discouraging. It's like giving what you think is a really thoughtful gift to someone who just isn't paying attention. So I'm looking for advice on how to network and disseminate information about my projects so that they don't fizzle out like this. Are there any sites, newsgroups, or mailing lists that I've been completely missing?

Where to post code for open source usage?

I've been working for a few weeks now with the Google Maps API v3, and have done a good bit of development for the map I've been creating. Some of the things I've done have had to be done to add usability where there previously was not any, at least not that I could find online. Essentially, I made a list of what had to be done, searched all over the web for the ways to do what I needed, and found that some were not(at the time) possible(in the "grab an example off the web" sense). Thus, in my working on this map, I have created a number of very useful tools, which I would like to share with the development community. Is there anywhere I could use as a hub, apart from my portfolio ( http://dougglover.com ), to allow people to view and recycle my work? I know how hard it can be to need to do something, and be unable to find the solution elsewhere, and I don't think that if something has been done before, it should necessarily need to be written again and again. Hence open source code, right? Firstly, I was considering coming on here and asking a question, and then just answering it. Problem there is I assume that would just look like a big reputation grab. If not, please let me know and I'll go ahead and do that so people here can see it. Other suggestions appreciated. Some stuff I've made: A (new and improved) LatLng generator Works quicker, generates LatLng based on position of a draggable marker Allows searching for an address to place the marker on/near the desired location(much better than having to scroll to your location all the way from Siberia) Since it's a draggable marker, double-clicking zooms in, instead of creating a new LatLng marker like the one I was originally using The ability to create entirely custom "Smart Paths" Plot LatLng points on the map which connect to each other just like they do using the actual Google Maps Using Dijkstra's algorithm with Javascript, the routing is intelligent and always gives the shortest possible route, using the points provided Simple, easy to read multi-dimensional array system allows for easily adding new points to the grid Any suggestions, etc. appreciated.

Small Open source and free java applications

I am a Perl Developer who has just stepped into the Java world and I want to be very proficient in Java EE development. However, I have found that, being a Perl guy, I have very high MTI(Mother Tongue Influence). Indians will know what MTI is. For others, it can be defined as an influence of your "main" language whenever you "speak" your new language. In other words, our mind converts/translates what we want to "say" in the new language based on the "main" language, which can be quite absurd or meaning less in the "new" language. Coming back to the point, as a result of this MTI, many lines of my code has this Perl influence and it is absurd and useless for production. Hence, I'd like to see or better do some research on existing small to medium open source java applications, so that I will know how I can "speak" in the native way of the "new" language. Some examples in PHP will be : WordPress, Zend etc. So I'd really appreciate if you guys could suggest any such apps. Apps that have a great commercial value are highly preferred

Open Source Licenses, which one?

recently I created a java class " Custom Layout Manager ", which I want to make it open-source and distribute it. So it's not really a "product", nor a "complete program". Here's the list of permissions and specifications: You are free to use and modify with some limitations (packages and classes names, should remain the same, if you want another name, extend this class. - The .jar file, project name is ok to change). You don't need to share your modifications. You can't modify and then sell it to others. You can use it as part of your commercial software (For example: It's OK if: you created an instant messaging program, that uses my "Layout", since your "core bussiness" isn't the "Layout", but the msg program. It's NOT OK if: you created another "Layout" by extending it, added some features and sell it.) You can't remove the author's name nor the author's website address. You are free to donate. :D Basically, it's free and it's Ok as you give me credits and don't make money with it. I guess it might be a little bit complex, since you use it "commercially" but cannot sell it separately. I have seeked almost all the licenses, and the closest one was MIT license, but it says that you can sell it, so I don't really want to use this one. Is there any license that fits all these permissions I stated? Thanks.

SQL Server source control from Visual Studio

Developers have long since had to context switch between two IDEs, Visual Studio for application code development and SQL Server Management Studio for database development. While this is accepted, especially given the richness of the database development feature set in SSMS, loading a separate tool can seem a little overkill. This is where SQL Connect comes in. This is an add-in to Visual Studio that provides a connected development experience for the SQL Server developer. Connected database development involves modifying a development sandbox database, as opposed to offline development, where SQL text files are modified independently of the database. One of the main complaints of Data Dude (VS DBPro) is that it enforces the offline approach. This gripe is what SQL Connect addresses. If you don't already use SQL Source Control, you can get up and running with SQL Connect by adding a new project to your Visual Studio solution as follows: Then choose your existing development database and you're ready to go. If you already use SQL Source Control, you will need to link SQL Connect to your existing database scripts folder repository, so SQL Connect and SQL Source Control can be used collaboratively (note that SQL Source Control v.3.0.9.18 or later is required). Locate the repository (this can be found in the Setup tab in SQL Source Control). .and create a working folder for it (here I'm using TortoiseSVN). Back in Visual Studio, locate the SQL Connect panel (in the View menu if it hasn't auto loaded) and select Import SQL Source Control project Locate your working folder and click Import. This creates a Red Gate database project under your solution: From here you can modify your development database, and manage your changes in source control. To associate your development database with the project, right click on the project node, select Properties, set the database and Save. Now you're ready to make some changes. Locate the object you'd like to modify in the Solution Explorer, and double click it to invoke a query window or table designer. You also have the option to edit the creation SQL directly using Edit SQL File in Project. Keeping the development database and Visual Studio project in sync is as easy as clicking on a button. One you've made your change, you can use whichever mechanism you choose to commit to source control. Here I'm using the free open-source AnkhSVN to integrate Subversion with Visual Studio. Maintaining your database in a Visual Studio solution means that you can commit database changes and application code changes in the same changeset. This is desirable if you have continuous integration set up as you want to ensure that all files related to a change are committed atomically, so you avoid an interim "broken build". Releasing a project under GPL v2 or later without the source code of libraries

I wrote a system in Java that I want to release under the terms of GPL v2 or later. I've used Apache Maven to deal with all the dependencies of the system, so I don't have the source code of any of the libraries used. I've already checked, all the libraries were released under GPL-compatible licenses (Apache v2, 3-clause BSD, MIT, LGPL v2 and v2.1). I have 3 questions about this scenario: 1) Can I release a package with only the binaries of code I wrote, not including the libraries, and distribute only the source code I wrote? 2) Can I release a package with all the binaries, including the libraries, and distribute only the source code I wrote? 3) Can I release a package with all the binaries, including the libraries, and distribute only the source code I wrote plus the source code of the libraries licensed under the LGPL license?

Razor – Hiding a Section in a Layout

Layouts in Razor allow you to define placeholders named sections where content pages may insert custom content much like the ContentPlaceHolder available in ASPX master pages. When you define a section in a Razor layout it’s possible to specify if the section must be defined in every content page using the layout or if its definition is optional allowing a page not to provide any content for that section. For the latter case, it’s also possible using the IsSectionDefined method to render default content when a page does not define the section. However if you ever require to hide a given section from all pages based on some runtime condition you might be tempted to conditionally define it in the layout much like in the following code snippet. if(condition) { @RenderSection("ConditionalSection", false) } With this code you’ll hit an error as soon as any content page provides content for the section which makes sense since if a page inherits a layout then it should only define sections that are also defined in it. To workaround this scenario you have a couple of options. Make the given section optional with and move the condition that enables or disables it to every content page. This leads to code duplication and future pages may forget to only define the section based on that same condition. The other option is to conditionally define the section in the layout page using the following hack: @{ if(condition) { @RenderSection("ConditionalSection", false) } else { RenderSection("ConditionalSection", false).WriteTo(TextWriter.Null); } } Hack inspired by a recent stackoverflow question.

Create a transient attribute "isPymtReadOnly" of type BOOLEAN.This will return TRUE if "isPymtReadOnlyStr" is "Y" otherwise FALSE. The reason behind adding the "isPymtReadOnly" is we are setting the item property as readonly through SPEL.It will recognize only BOOLEAN.But SQL query doesn't support BOOLEAN.So we are building a BOOLEAN attribute from the SQL which will use in the personalization layer to set the item property. Steps 1) Create a new VO xxcust.oracle.apps.pos.supplier.server.XXCUSTSitesVO which extends from oracle.apps.pos.supplier.server.SitesVO. Make sure the binding style should be same as SitesVO. Create the XXCUSTSitesVO which same query of SitesVO.Later we will add the new attribute to XXCUSTSitesVO. At this point of time all the existing VO attributes are of Updatable property as "Always". Press Finish without creating XXCUSTSitesVORowImpl.java 2) Select the XXCUSTSitesVO from JDeveloper Application Navigator. As each user may upload less than the maximum limit of 20 images, there would be some "empty" images on the page. I am using javascript to hide these empty images. The loading of the profile page would generate a series of 404 errors depending on the number of empty images. Would these 404 errors affect the SEO of the page and the website?

Hiding php includes from search spiders?

Quick and simple question. I have 80+ html files which I want to be crawled. They are individual product pages. Each of these pages calls its content using php includes. These php include files are in a separate folder on the server and contain the core content for the individual product pages. I just wanted to ask, if I use robots.txt or .htaccess to prevent crawling of the directory that holds the php content files, will there be no issue crawling the html pages which include these files? What I want to achieve is have the html files indexed with the php content included in them, but I don't want visitors landing on the php content pages, nor have these php files indexed as duplicate content. Just clarification needed as to whether it is safe to block spiders from accessing the php folder, without this affecting the html files being indexed with the included content. Is this the best way to do things? Or should I just leave the content php files to be crawled?

compiz hiding unity and all menus

After updating to Ubuntu 11.10, I was severly disturbed by Dash and wanted to go back to Ubuntu Classic. So I tried to read up, and found Compiz SettingsManager. In there, I clicked "on" never hide menus. For some reason this made all my menus at the top of the screen (volume, network, my login identity, and shutoff, etc) disappear - as well as the quickstart menu to the left (Unity). I am not very technical, so I have a hard time finding any programs now, and I just got on the internet by clicking on a link in a document, that I was fortunate to have on my Desktop. Without it, I wouldn't be able to ask for help. What I wish for is a) to get back the menu at the top, b) to restore the Ubuntu Classic without the irritating launcher and Dash, c) these two things to not disappear every time there is a new version of Ubuntu. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hiding recent files in Unity dashboard

Ubuntu 13.04 (though had the same issue in both 12.04 LTS and 12.10). Unity desktop (yes I like it, shush). Anyways, when clicking on the dashboard there is a tab for 'Files and Folders'. I don't have any files on this computer that isn't porn. In other words, it displays the images there (as it's supposed to), but I can't have it displaying the porn for obvious reasons. I have disabled 'recent activity' and even added the folder it's all in to the 'do not record activity in the following folders'. I'm assuming that works but as I don't actually have any other files, it still displays them. I don't want to have to make it a hidden folder because it's on an external HDD and causes issues when moving from computer to computer (I have other movies on it as well). TL;DR: Get rid of the 'Files and Folders' tab in the dashboard. Is it possible?

LuaJit FFI and hiding C implementation details

I would like to extend an application using LuaJit FFI. Having seen http://luajit.org/ext_ffi_tutorial.html this is surprisingly easy when comparing this to the Lua C API. So far so good. However I do not plainly want to wrap C functions but provide a higher level API to users writing scripts for the application. Especially I do not want users to be able to access "primitives", i.e. the ffi.* namespace. Is this possible or will that ffi namespace be available to user's Lua scripts? On the issue of Sandboxing Lua I found http://lua-users.org/wiki/SandBoxes which is not talking about FFI though. Furthermore, the plan I have described above is assuming that the introduction of abstraction layers happens on the lua side of code. Is this an advisable approach or would you rather abstract functionality on the statically compiled code (on the C-side)?

Hiding images in folder without renaming or moving the files

I'm dual booting Ubuntu with Windows and I have all my music on a separate harddrive. In Windows the album art is hidden by default but when I access the folder in Ubuntu there is two album artwork files for every mp3, one small and one large. I would like to hide those images without having to rename them with a dot before or moving them to some other folder becuase then the album artwork would dissapear in Windows. Is there a way to make a .hidden file which hides all images or any other way which hides all images in nautilus?

Can I create a new project based on GNU GPL v2?

I've found a SourceForge project with a solid core that I would like to improve. The project hasn't been updated since 2007 so I assume it is "dead". I sent an e-mail asking to become a contributor to the listed project manager last week but still haven't received a response. The project is licensed under the GNU GPL v2. I would like to contribute to the current project but that doesn't appear to be possible. Can I modify the current source version of the project and release this modified project? I would keep the same license on the modified project.
