• MySQL is killing the server IO.

  I manage a fairly large/busy vBulletin forums (~2-3k requests per second, running on gigenet cloud), the database is ~ 10 GB (~9 milion posts, ~60 queries per second), lately MySQL have been grinding the disk like there's no tomorrow according to iotop and slowing the site. The last idea I can think of is using replication, but I'm not sure how much that would help and worried about database sync. I'm out of ideas, any tips on how to improve the situation would be highly appreciated. Specs : Debian Lenny 64bit ~12Ghz (6 cores) CPU, 7520gb RAM, 160gb disk. Kernel : 2.6.32-4-amd64 mysqld Ver 5.1.54-0.dotdeb.0 for debian-linux-gnu on x86_64 ((Debian)) Other software: vBulletin 3.8.4 memcached 1.2.2 PHP 5.3.5-0.dotdeb.0 (fpm-fcgi) (built: Jan 7 2011 00:07:27) lighttpd/1.4.28 (ssl) - a light and fast webserver PHP and vBulletin are configured to use memcached. • Minidump folder cannot be found

  Although I have enabled the creation of minidump files in my system, it appears that either Windows doesn't create them where the Startup and recovery dialog points to (%SystemRoot%\Minidump) or at least I can't find them. Even the Minidump folder under Windows directory is missing and I had numerous BSODs till now. I've searched all my HDs for mini*.dmp files only to find some old ones in a backup folder from my Vista x86 installation, before I install Windows 7 x64. Any thoughts of why this is happening and how to fix it? Pre-thanx!

• Robocopy to a drive connected to a wlan router fails

  I have a wireless router and an USB hard drive connected to it. Basic file access on the command line and Explorer works flawlessly after having set up some options on the router and mapping to some folders with net use k: \\ROUTER\Folder1 /user:MYLAPTOP\Me password /persistent:yes net use n: \\ROUTER\Folder2 /user:MYLAPTOP\Me password /persistent:yes Robocopy (and using SyncToy for that matter) to a network drive however fails: robocopy c:\Files k:\Backup /MIR /Z gives There is not enough space on the disk. 2010/01/05 09:52:11 ERROR 112 (0x00000070) Accessing Destination Directory N:\ Waiting 30 seconds... The error message is misleading: there is plenty of space on the disk and the folders I'm copying are small. The router is an ASUS WL-500gp with a standard firmware. I'd appreciate if someone would be able to explain what is causing the problem and, if possible, how to fix it.

• Lost all data on Windows XP after blue screen

  I got a blue screen and was trying to boot with my OS disk. Frankly, I was unsure exactly how to do this. I was trying everything and booted in partition mode. Finally, I booted with disk and ran chkdsk /r and was able to log into Windows. But, all of my files and pictures are gone. I have no backup and all I'm sick to think that I lost the last seven years of pictures of my kids. What can I do?

• Migrating Shared Hosting and Email

  Hey Guys, I know there has already been a question that has been posted here about migrating shared hosting accounts, but wanted to get a second opinion on my plan to move hosting providers. My business is moving our shared hosting account (hosting and email) to a new provider, and would like to have minimal downtime. Here is our current plan: Create a backup of our old site Upload our site to the new host Set up duplicate email accounts with our new host Change the name server records on our domain to point to our new host Leave our old site up long enough for DNS records to propagate completely. I'm hoping this should result in little downtime for both website and email. Because of the volume of high-importance emails our company receives on a daily basis downtime is very expensive and not tolerated. Thanks, Chris

  Hello, I need to install a program for my studies and, this program, need java to run. When I try to perform the installation say that cannot find the JDK; since the JDK is already installed by default in mac, the problem is export the java home. I´ve try a lot and I cant do it! I know that I have to add a line in a .bashrc file (or .profile, or .bash_profile) I´ve created all those files, at different times but nothing... I´m a new mac user, but I use Linux too and I dont know what happened, I just need to export java home to perform my work... and is really necessary for me to add environment variables too. • eSATA hotswap using Jmicron JMB363 controller

  I have tried both IDE and AHCI modes in the BIOS. Also tried many different driver revisions. I can't seem to hot swap an external SATA drive. I can use the wizard to safely remove it, but reconnecting doesn't do anything unless I reboot. I use a thermaltake dock, and I would like to swap in my backup drive sometimes to do images (they take all day over USB). I can reboot, but I'd like to use hot swap. The controller is a Jmicron JMB363. I'm using the latest BIOS on my motherboard, as well.

• Windows XP will only boot if it has booted into safe mode, and then been restarted into normal mode, anybody ever seen this?

  I have a workstation with an impressively strange problem. If you boot the computer, it will load up to the "select user account screen" and then freeze completely before I can select a user account. No mouse, keyboard, anything working. However, if you then reboot the computer into safe mode, do NOTHING, and then reboot into regular mode, it loads fine. The next time you reboot the computer, it will freeze a the login screen again. So basically to log in normally I must reboot into safe mode first every time, even though I'm not even doing anything in safe mode (I don't even need to log into a profile). Anybody ever seen anything like this?

• MySql Data Loss - post mortem analysis - RackSpace Cloud Server

  After a recent 'emergency migration' of a RS cloud server, the mysql databases on our server snapshot image proved to be days out of date from the backup date. And yet files that were uploaded through the impacted webapp had been written to the file system. Related metadata that was written to the database was lost, but the files themselves were backed-up. Once I was able to manually access the mysql data files before the mysql server started (server was configured to start mysql on boot), I was able to see that the update time for ib_logfile1, ib_logfile0 and ibdata1 was days old. As with this poster, mysql data loss after server crash, it's as if some caching controller had told the OS / mysql server that it had committed data that was still in cache, and it was lost instead of flushed. I can't quite wrap my head around how the uploaded files got written but the database data did not. I would have thought that any cache would have flushed system wide, rather than process by process. Any suggestions as to how this might have happened?

  Alright, so I treated myself to a new computer for Christmas. Windows7 64-bit, yada yada yada. Uninstalled Norton Security using Windows7 uninstall program, installed Microsoft Security Essentials in it's place. From a cold boot, I still get the screen from Norton asking me if I wanna sign up for the free six months, which I don't. Guess Windows7 uninstall left behind some pieces. Anyone know how I can get rid of this Norton screen? EDIT: @ Revolter: Great. Used Norton Removal Tool Successfully. Now I get a different pop-up window ALWAYS reminding me if I want to activate Norton Online Backup. What does one have to do to FINALLY get rid of these people?

  Hi All, I am very new to the VMware world. We have VMWare vCenter 4 in the production environment but we have created multiple VLAN through Cisco Switch. I want know, how I can create an isolated test environment for software testing purpose only, so anything will happen in that test vLan will not make trouble in the production environment. "Host-only networking" is the solution or there is a better way to achieve this result? My requirements A. Hosts should be able to access Internet and a Network Share drive but not Production network B. Hosts should connect each other inside the Virtual LAN C. I should be able to take automatic or periodic backup or snapshoot and deploy snapshot when necessary. Whatever your answer is, please give me steps, how to do, if possible.   I'm trying to setup a Perl development environment on my Mac laptop and have been having a really hard time getting it working. I thought I had everything configured correctly but when I try to run a sample script it is reporting errors with the DBI module and can't access the DB. Here is what is reported in the Apache error logs: [Fri Apr 30 23:11:33 2010] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] Can't locate DBI.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /Library/Perl/Updates/5.10.0/darwin-thread-multi-2level /Library/Perl/Updates/5.10.0 /System/Library/Perl/5.10.0/darwin-thread-multi-2level /System/Library/Perl/5.10.0 /Library/Perl/5.10.0/darwin-thread-multi-2level /Library/Perl/5.10.0 /Network/Library/Perl/5.10.0/darwin-thread-multi-2level /Network/Library/Perl/5.10.0 /Network/Library/Perl /System/Library/Perl/Extras/5.10.0/darwin-thread-multi-2level /System/Library/Perl/Extras/5.10.0 .) at main.pm line 5. I have the following accounts: root, daemon, bin, sys, sync, games, man, lp, mail, news, uucp, proxy, www-data backup, list, irc, gnats, nobody, libuuid, syslog, messagebus, whoopsie, mandscape, sshd, eric Except root, sshd and eric, which ones should I not disable?   I have been requested to investigate how I can reduce the downtime of our website upgrades. We maintain a DNN site with both public facing pages and member only pages. The member only pages are directly linked to our core application database while the public pages are not. Our current process is to redirect website users as soon as the upgrade process begins, which includes Backup of the Prod DB Update Prod DB Update Executables (Application) Upgrade Website Application (If this requires an update) Install Dependencies Upgrade sub systems like communication engine and payment broker Update various configuration files Perform testing of systems Restart all services Allow access to site This process can take from 2 to 8 hours depending on upgrade required, scripts to be run, size of database and number or portals. My initial thoughts are to restrict users to read only pages and any update pages would be unavailable. Could anyone please offer suggestions as to the best practices for what I would think to be a common problem so that we can reduce this down time and if we need infrastructure changes, I can put this to our technical department.

• Microsoft Entourage/Exchange Server problem: all objects disappeared from server - still in some form on the client

  One of our employees works with Entourage on his MacBook Pro (OSX 10.6) accessing Exchange Server 2007. Last Friday morning, I think while working over a VPN, Entourage (I think it was Entourage) deleted all his objects (mail, calendar, contacts) on the server and while creating a lot of strange folders (starting with underscores) on the client. The local data seems to be there, but not in a consistent form. Since the user's mailbox is rather big, I suspect, that there was some kind of "move" operation which did not complete. I tried to export the data, but the export stops because of a corrupted object. Is there a tool or another way to export or retrieve the local data? Edit - FYI: we solved the problem getting his data from the previous night's backup.

• How do I reset the time on my computer, without turning it on?

  Alright, so today, I did something very stupid: Do an experement on my computer without backing it up. So I saw that the calander in windows could only go up to 12/31/2999 (or something like that). I was wondering if I set the time to 11:59:59 PM, if it would crash my computer, thinking that if I did I could just restart it from the recovery disc or something. Well, I was right: It did crash it. However, I can't turn my computer on AT ALL. When I try to, it plays a 1-2 second beep, 1 second silence, repeated a total of 3 times. My manufacturer is Dell. I'm sending this from my phone, I appolgise for all typos. My last backup was from a few months ago, that won't work.

• Get Pidgin Logs From Other Directory

  I'm using pidgin on both, windows and linux on several pc. To sync my log, I use dropbox. For linux, it's easy. Just a matter of symlink. However, I don't know how to sync it on windows, without manual copy-paste once I'm done on windows. So, is there any solution to my problem? pidgin plugin, maybe? • I need to duplicate software packages installed on one HPUX system to a test system

  I am very inexperienced with HPUX and need to duplicate a production server for a test environment. I have 11.11 on the prod server and have completed the base install on the test server. What I need is a way to add the installed packages from the prod server to the test server. Unfortunately I haven't the foggiest idea how to do this. I've thought of using ignite backup and restore but don't have matching tape types between the two. The other thought was using swlist to gather the installed packages and then going to the website to download and install on the test environment. Has anyone successfully done something like this? Pointers?

• MS Server 2003 Activiation Loop

  Recently we had a motherboard failure on a terminal server so we replaced the faulty motherboard, re-setup the RAID arrays (same motherboard but still wouldn't recognize old RAID setup) and continued to recover the system from a previous backup. No problem up to here, after restoring the system you are prompted to reboot and than login. On login we get a message box stating that Windows needs to be activated do you want to activate now, press yes but than the OS proceeds to log you off and do nothing at all. You can try over and over but to no avail. Found a few articles about a glitch in the activation script and how to reset it, tried that with the same results. Hoping someone can share some knowledge if you have seen this before? Thanks!

• Windows 2008R2 blocks outbound LDAP for non-admins?

  I've got a Windows 2008R2 terminal server with ~30 users on it. It's joined to a Samba-based domain. During the login script, we connect directly to the LDAP server to pull out certain profile information. This used to work just fine. Now, it doesn't, but only for non-local-admin accounts. Local admins work fine. As a non-local-admin: Connection to ports 389 or 636 just terminate (wireshark on the LDAP server reveals no connection attempt) Connection to other ports on the same server work fine Same thing on multiple LDAP servers Windows firewall is disabled Can't find any other rules/policies that may block this I suspect since this used to work, it came down during an update, but for the life of me, I can't find what. EDIT: I just ran Wireshark on the machine and didn't see anything when connecting to the LDAP server in question (or any LDAP server for that matter). I can, however, see traffic when I connect to that server on another port.

  I know the answer to this is "it depends", and I know that the counter can and will be thrown off by backup jobs or other things that might use memory mapped files. I'd like to get a bit of clarity over exactly what "it depends" on and some general guidelines around what a healthy web server normally shows for this counter. So if activities regarding memory-mapped files are excluded, if I have ample amounts of memory, should I really see this down close to 0? When should I get suspicious that I might need additional RAM and/or start looking for application memory leaks?

• Why does bash invocation differ on AIX when using telnet vs ssh

  I am using an AIX 5.3 server with a .bashrc file set up to echo "Executing bashrc." When I log in to the server using ssh and run: bash -c ls I get: Executing bashrc . .. etc.... However, when I log in with telnet as the same user and run the same command I get: . .. etc.... Clearly in the telnet case, the .bashrc was not invoked. As near as I can tell this is the correct behaviour given that the shell is non-interactive in both cases (it is invoked with -c). However, the ssh case seems to be invoking the shell as interactive. It does not appear to be invoking the .profile, so it is not creating a login shell. I cannot see anything obviously different between the environments in the two cases. What could be causing the difference in bash behaviour?

• Nginx location issue

  I'm trying to set a longer (30 day) 'expires' header for my (images only) in the /misc-stuff/ directory. This is what I'm using for my site : # Serve static files directly from nginx location ~* \.(jpg|jpeg|gif|png|bmp|ico|pdf|flv|swf|exe|html|htm|txt|css|js) { add_header Cache-Control public; add_header Cache-Control must-revalidate; expires 7d; } I want to be able to keep that code in to handle regular site images, but create a new block to handle the /misc-stuff/ directory. I have tried : location ^~ /misc-stuff/ { ... } The problem I'm having now is that my backup .php files in that directory show up as plain text if someone tries to access it. How do I set it up so ONLY .gif images in the /misc-stuff/ directory are effected?
